Title: Pirates of the Dread Sea
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on January 10, 2019, 01:15:05 PM
Heyhey, hope everybody had a nice start into 2019.

I'm currently working on some figures from Dead Earth Games' figure range to accompany their recently kickstartered Pirates of the Dread Sea skirmish game.

Here's a first WIP shot of some Dwarves:

Hope you like them so far!

@Bloggard: Do check it out. I'll paint each of the released figures (Elf, Orc and two Mermaids coming up as well).

@gibby64: Cheers, I'll pass the praise of the sculpts on. ;)

@GDonk: :D Thanks!

Another WIP shot:

Slowly slogging through these figures. But tonight I'm allowed to go out and play a game. That'll be fun.

@OSHIROmodels: Thanks very much!

@Malamute: I'm sure to pass it on to the people who made them come to be. :D

Right, I'm back. Currently I'm working on some promo figures for Dead Earth Games (again!). These is the initial release wave of miniatures from their first kickstarter for the Fantasy pirate skirmish game Pirates of the Dread Sea.

They're still WIP at this point. The Dwarves are almost done now, the Elf is done, the Mermaids require a bit more work.

(https://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2019_01/wip3.jpg.0137f365122577cddb06bfd59b999964.jpg)

There's an Orc as well; I'll paint him once everything else is finished.

Hope you like the figures so far! KS pledges will be shipped over the next weeks, the figures will be available through DEG's online store in about 2 weeks. And there's another KS in the pipeline for more human pirates and more. I think that'll start in February.

@Bloggard: Thanks very much! :)

@Papierschnitzel: Cheers! I'm just the paintmonkey, but I'll pass the compliments on.

Righty, yesterday the last two figures of the first batch of Pirates of the Dread Sea minis finally arrived. To help get over time time it would take me to get these done I threw together some improvised terrain for some scenic shots of the existing minis:

(https://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2019_01/5c4aecfd44d3b_as3schrift1.jpg.38f76315ff5bbac01c2295d749d01109.jpg)

Problem is that I own zero maritime terrain, apart from that little rowing boat. So I had to improvise. First I laid out my Dreadfleet sea blanket and a land mat, then I cobbled together a simple landing stage and looked for some other bits and pieces to have in the scene.

(https://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2019_01/5c4aecfbc498c_as2schrift1.jpg.e504cb60b3acaa9aad84908949a1c25b.jpg)

Of course the shoreline is always a tricky thing to depict on a tabletop unless you have specific scenic item for that. So I boldly went with slightly exaggerated ocean spray. Quick, easy, improvised. And the minis are meant to be the focus of things anyway. ;)

well, not just a fantastic painter, but can knock-out publication-worthy (and better than many one sees in this niche market) photos at the drop of a hat...

thought it was the dreadfleet 'mat' - which has worked out a treat.

@Bloggard: Cheers. Over the past year I've been really trying to improve on my scenic shots and little diorama photos of minis rather than my purist approach of white-background. This also resulted in the funny thing that when ever I got time to work on my own stuff for a change I now tend to make terrain pieces (and mostly small bits of scatter terrain) instead of painting my own figures.

is it available light (please don't tell me it is!  lol) or a 'proper' lighting set-up?

just looks so 'natural' and yet balanced at the same time.

Entirely improper set-up. :D It's basically my dining table light (I shot the photos at night) and my camera's flash at a weird angle.

oh no ... I knew you were going to say something like that  o_o lol  well as billy cobham said about keith moon's drumming: 'I don't know what it is you're doing ... but keep doing it!'  :)

can't begin to work out how you've got such a great white balance with that kind of combination. But, quite apart from that, it's the whole thing.
that first pic in the series you've posted above, is as good as I've seen anywhere.

@Michi: Out of all of these figures I've been looking forward to painting these the most.

@Bloggard: :D Thanks very much again. I'll put it down to dumb luck really. It's basically snapshots to be honest. Didn't even require much editing (levels, contrast, etc.) at all. Don't worry, I'll come up with horrible pictures again as well to make up for that. :D But until then I'm just really happy with how these came out.

Right, now for the last two dudes of this batch - a sort of prototype Dwarf, and the Orc:

Thanks once again for such an awesome job painting our precious miniatures, Sigur! We're really over the moon with everything about this range, from the sculpts, to the casting and of course the painting! The photos are pretty ace too.

These miniatures are now all available to buy from www.deadearth.co.uk

They look great. But crossposting on multiple boards isn't allowed on this forum I'm afraid. See forum rule 2.10 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=16293.0). As this is the established thread, I've removed the other one. Sorry about that, but it does help keep the place tidy without multiple conversations on the same topic running simultaneously in different places. Good luck with this venture  :)

Apologies! And no problem, of course. I did look for the rules but was obviously not looking properly! Thanks.

@Adm Richie: :D My pleasure.

@Captain Blood: Thanks very much, and sorry for any confusion caused.

Right, we're back. With a WIP shot of the human crew, coming up in the next Kickstarter, which should launch in a few weeks:

Heyhey, I'm back! And so is this project. In the mean time I did the undead crew (with a Voodoo theme, which I think is a nice spin on the old skeleton pirates):

...and of course the finished human crew:

The Kickstarter by Dead Earth games for their Pirates of the Dread Sea skirmish game and the above seen figures is currently running, and can be found here:

Haven't played it myself, but it looks really promising, and I can attest to the miniatures being really nice. It's also one more chance to get your hands on that KS-exclusive Dwarf chef! ;)

Oh, one more note on the skeleton pirates: First minis I used contrast paints on. Interesting stuff. Hardly revolutionary to anything, but I guess they introduce a group of people (GW's target audience, I assume) to a different approach to painting. Try them out if you like, but it you don't I think you don't miss out on much.

@Grumbledook: Thank you, Sir!
