Just about to dig out the old 1/600 ww2 coastal craft.
Looked at the new Cruel Seas rule from Warlord at the Reading show last year.
Decided we wouldn’t go for them and didn’t want to rush down the road of buying loads of 1/300 craft as I already have a good collection of 1/600 craft that I bought off a mate a few years ago.
Looked around what rules people were using for 1/600 and ended up on the Edinburgh wargaming club site, where they were using some unpublished rules from a chap called David Manley.
That name rang a bell as I looked through my old rules for coastal warfare and noticed I already had a couple of sets that he had published in the past.
So after several attempts to contact David, I finally got thro, and he has very kindly sent me a copy of his new “Narrow Seas” rules.
My mates and myself plan to play the first game this coming Saturday, so lookout for the aar on the Sunday.

Went to make some flames and smoke today.
Already got black smoke but tried to paint the base of it orange/yellow for the flames.
Now the orange paint pot was well old, and as I undid it, it flew everywhere.
All over me and on the floor.
Tried cleaning the floor of the shed, but the carpet now has some orange features in it. Oh heck.

Who makes the two large freighter ships? Are they PT Dockyard? If so, can you tell me which ones (product numbers)? I have no feeling as to what tonnage equals what size.

In case anyone is interested in the 'cloth',
it is from Dunhelm's (chain of shops in the UK).
They call it 'Leatherette' it comes in several different colours,
blue (obviously), brown (muddy), grey (towns), green(jungle), black (space/D&D) and
a very nice dark red (which I would consider for an alien planet).
It comes off a roll (about 4' wide) & retails, normally, at £9.00 a metre,
but Saturday it was on offer at £7.80 a metre. I don't know how long their sale will last.

Freighter ships were bought as seen from my mate, so I'm sorry but I don't know what make they are..

Tankers look very much like the Heroic & Ros 1/300 Coastal Forces range.
Variation in the bridge structure, which comes in two parts.

1/600 Skytrex, now sold by Heroics and Ross in their 1/600 range. Their online shop is down ATM but from memory these are the 3,500 or 4,000 ton vessels.
You can also vary the funnels (if you've got multiple kits..) between the older thinner style here and a larger diameter more 'modern' one IIRC, as well as the bridge and the masts.

Did you base the ships or were they already based? I need to base a bunch of PT Dockyard ships I just bought (with more on the way...) and I'm just not sure what goop to use and how to make the waves.

Knowing the lad that based & painted them, it was ordinary filler.
As it dries make irregular patterns in it, then when dry paint it
your chosen sea colour (dry brush highlights or wash dark tones).
When that is dry, highlight by dry brushing white (crests of the waves).
With larger scale stuff I mix a second lot of filler, this time with sand in it.
This gives more wave-tops to catch the dry brushed white.

So we played our first game of Narrow Seas yesterday in the shed.
We had 4 players and has.been (Pete) kindly umpired (well he is very good at that)
As the author suggests in the rules, we played just a couple of boats each, and just tried out the movement rules and the gun firing rules, the idea being that we move on to firing torpedoes as we understand the basics a little more.
We played out 3 early War British MTBs and 2 mid War British MTBs against 3 German mid War eboats and 2 German armed trawlers.
The game flowed well as we got to grips with the rules.
I’ve made some notes that I will feed back to the author, that would just make things a little clearer.
The main thing was, we had a good fast game. People were happy with the movement, and happy with the damage as it seemed realistic.

Butties and beer flowed, and no one got seasick.

Much fun was had. A few (more) worked examples would help, as would annotation
on the ship card diagram. Flatpack has fed-back to the nice man who let us help with the
play-testing and I must add that we all thought the rules were fast & fun. The islands
were there because, as one of our group, JC, said to me many years ago, 'you just
have to have something to hide behind'.
As an extra game to play, naval is a good choice, small initial expenditure (I purchased
just three S-boats in 1/600th) little scenery (blue cloth from Dunhelm's for £20) and a
fun/simple to play set of rules. I recommend you try it.

You can't buy the rules separate from the ships? It only comes in a package of rules plus ships?

You can use any rules with any scale, as it’s only a hobby.
We saw the rules at the Reading show last year, and investigated using them with 1/600.
I then searched the internet for other rules, and discovered the Edinburgh club were using these new Narrow Seas rules, so that’s how I ended up going down this route.

the first war to see an 'air craft carrier....?
ACW!!!!! A barge moored on the Potomac for observation balloons.
Who knows if you want a 'what if' scenario....Da Vinci's helicopter & a big gondola.
