In this thread I will post all the stuff i do for Cruel Seas from Warlord Games.
For a x mas present to myself I got the cruel seas starter box. I just finished painting the first miniatures for the game. The miniatures are made from plastic ( S-boats and Vospers) the bigger ships like the coastal tanker are made from resin and metal. Included in the starter box are the torpedo markers and everything else you need to play. The rules are quite nice and give a very fast paced game. Alas in the first edition there were many mistakes in the rulebook so that warlord published grata 14 days after release of the game. Despite these problems at the start the game is really good. I like it and will play it a lot. There are some issues with torpedo shooting but nothing wich can’t be tweaked if not liked as written.
I will write a run through the rules later.
Here are the miniatures. I got the starter and the tanker model. As said above the tanker is resin and metal the other boats are plastic as are the torpedo markers.
Here is the tanker model:
I built it strait out of the box. If I built it again I would replace the metal masts with brass wire ones for sturdiness. It is a nice little coastal tanker so don’t expect a ocean going ship it is a smallish coastal steamer. But that is the kind of ship you would expect to find as prey by the S boats or vospers in the channel.
Next up the two Vospers. There are two different Vosper versions in the basic game. A later war version with 4 torpedo tubes and an early version with 2 torpedo tubes.
The masts are quite thick , but I think these is to keep them from braking when gaming with them. at least these are wargaming models so have to be more sturdy then scale models. I think that I will replace the plastic masts with brass wire ones when I build my other boats. If you look closely at the bridge of the two tube Vosper boat you can see some crew in the bridge area. They are from the tanker model.
Next up is the S 38 Schnellboot.
Again the boat is build strait out of the box with the addition of brass fotoetched railings and some Tamya crew figures. The railing is 1/350 scale ( the boats are 1/300 scale) but i think it fits quite nicely. The crew figures instead are only 2 dimensional ones I wouldn’t use them again. I will wait for the warlord metal figures and replace them.
Here is the S100 Schnellboot with armored bridge.
Again with fotoetched railing and to be exchanged Tamya crew figures. The Splash markers are resin casts done by myself. I didn’t like the ones in the starter box. By the way the gaming mat is by Deepcut studio.
Here are some shots of a test game of the scenario which will be played at this years Kiepencon in Münster Germany .

Altogether a wonderful game and nice miniatures will definitely do more here. The only thing missing is more coastal cargo vessels . I will probably scratch and cast some in the near future to have convoys with more ships.
First up will be a former northsea island steamer . The Rheinland build in the 1920. So stay tuned!
-
Everything looks great. Nice work. I really like the way you have added the railings as well to the Schnellboots.
-
Nice, I did need a bit of inspiration for my own lot. 8) 8) 8)
-
These look good Tom. I’m quite tempted by these myself, I must admit... ::)
-
Try the game Richard! The rules are quite easy to learn and give a fast paced game. You can really use any boat or ship up to destroyer size so possibilities without end. There are quite a lot of good books about coastal waters actions so scenarios without end.
I like it.
-
As I started with cruel Seas, I decided that I would need more costal steamers for convoys. One tanker is not enough. Therefore i started to look for old plans of coastal steamers in the WWW.
As i often travel to the north sea island Borkum I started to look for plans of old steam ships with brought the tourists over to the island during the 1930-1940. These ships were called “Bäderschiffe” in German. I found plans for the steamship Rheinland with was build in 1926.
I will build her as she looked when brand new in 1929.
As usual I use cardboard and extruded polystyrene for my model building. Here are some pictures of the building process so far . Oh, I forgot to tell, the model is in 1/300 or 6mm , the scale of Cruel seas. The model could be used as a Sperrbrecher or similar war time use in the games.

My 2 sprues of PT boats arrived today with my copy of the latest WI, planning on using one as a radar boat for a Med fleet of MTBs. Got 2 sprues of torpedoes as well.
-
Nice job on that ship.
-
Thanks!
-
Little update on the Rheinland, basically more sanding and filling. I added the funnel and the life boat racks. Now only the fine detail like windows , anchors etc are missing. Then molding will commence .

I added the last little details to the steamer Rheinland. She will be prepared for casting today and I think I might manage doing the molds tomorrow then. I took pictures of her alongside the tanker from warlord for size comparison .

So as this build nears completion I am open for suggestions what should be next. I am thinking about doing a generic cargo vessel size will be in-between the tanker from warlord and a liberty ship. So length would be around 24 cm. Any more suggestions? What is missing for cruel Seas?
-
Very cool build on the steamship ( It looks fantastic and your WIPs were informative concerning any ship construction), and your other vessels for that matter. I blame people like you for making me want to check this one out. I'm waiting on the my order arriving and think this and Blood Red Skies would be wonderful to affect the dispositions of Bolt Action land battles.
-
Nice work on that ship, looking forward to seeing it cast and completed.
-
Thanks to all. The ship will get molded today
-
Great work. Love these models. I have actually cancelled my WI online subscription as it's pretty poor and you have to pay postage to get the freebies. Looks like I'm back to WH Smiths again.

This will be my next build for Cruel Seas. I will use this plan as a guideline to build different steamers as convoy ships for Cruel Seas games. The model will be around 24cm long.
I will use the same hull with different superstructures to represent different generic steam ships. Like tankers, frighters, passenger liners etc . Here is the start on the hull.

Nice.
Have you thought about skinning your hulls? I skin mine in thin card (Peter pig pink card in this case!) it gives a neater finish and takes paint well I find.
(Mine are 1/600 BTW! And the flash makes the coasters look terrible - they are better IRL honestly!)

They ARE better IRL. :D
-
nice ships ! Indeed . your approach is a neat idea. The next ship I will do will have a cardboard hull as it is a rescaled paper model ,something similar to your approach . Will be a Hunt II class escort destroyer , often seen in coastal waters.
-
Great stuff Tom 8)

Thanks!
Here is the Rheinland finished except a wash to dirty her up a bit:

Thanks gents!
I finished the parts of the steamer Bellota in the last days and did the molds yesterday. This is what the steamer looks like:

-
Looking great!
-
As I said in the last post I wanted to make moulds of the steamer Bellota. Here is the build steamer. The life boats and davids are still missing as are the air vents. I have to do two part molds for these. Will be done next week. Furthermore the masts are missing these will be done with brass rod.
Here is a picture of the cast steamer:
And a picture with the Warlord tanker alongside for size comparison:
The model as shown above is supposed to show the ship in ballast so riding very high in the water. I have done a loaded version ,too, have still to put it together, will show later.
More pictures of the molds, the parts and the build ship on: https://wargamesgazette.com/2019/03/07/casting-the-steamer/

This is getting to be quite a show. Nice work there. And the different ballast conditions - brilliant idea.
-
Thanks!
-
That has come out rather well!
Are you going to sell them?
-
I would sell some if someone is interested in them. But bear in mind that this is a hobby thing so no flashy packaging etc ;)

The Hunt Typ II destroyer escort for Cruel Seas in 1/300
This time I wanted to try a , may be easier, different way. I got a paper craft model of the Hunt Typ II (ORP Slazak) from JSC in 1/400.
As the model is in 1/400 I had to increase the size of the parts by about 30%. After doing that with a photocopying machine I started building the model like explained in the assembly instructions. The only difference being to fill all the hollow spaces with extruded polystyrene to make it sturdy enough for casting.
The next step was filling and sanding to get a rough hull
(https://wargamesgazette.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/img_9124.jpg?w=696&h=216&zoom=2)
Next the paper hull sides were glued in , before that I punched out all the bulleyes to get them 3d for casting.
Many more pictures of the build so far on: https://wargamesgazette.com/2019/03/12/the-hunt-typ-ii-destroyer-escort-for-cruel-seas-in-1-300/
-
I started with the deckhouses and superstructure:
As you can see I always did a sandwich of extruded polystyrene and card to make it as sturdy as possible. The bridge superstructure and the gun platforms will be done as separate pieces to get rid of the rather large undercuts which would be impossible to cast.

-
Nice start.
Do you have shares in silicone rubber companies? :o
-
That would be great ,but no i don't. The silicone I use is not really expensive if you manage to get at least 5 casts out of a mold ( I usually manage to use a mold much longer then that). The resin is a little cheaper then the silicone so what costs more is the resin if you do a lot of casts.
-
Interesting - where do you get silicone from? I found it very expesnive compared with the resin!
-
I get it from a german shop called S. und K. Hock , https://www.harzspezi.de/S-u-K-Hock-GmbH
I use this one: https://www.harzspezi.de/Abformsilikon-blau-weiss-fuer-Formenbau-Silikonkautschuk
Hope that helps. Sorry page only in German

So this weekend saw the Bellota finished in both versions. I added the missing live boats and davids and the masts and rigging. Only thing to add now is some crew and paint .

The boats are all from Warlord games except a few of the weapons on the second Fairmile those are scratch build.
-
Really nice colours and camo there 8) 8)
-
Thanks
-
Excellent Tom. They have come up really well :-*
-
Love the camo.
Am interested in seeing some boats
in the flesh, so to say.
Am going to a Convention in May.
Will see them then.
-
Here is a picture of the work I did lately on the Hunt class destroyer escort. The superstructure is nearly completed now. But there are enough things to do like putting on all the detail wich is printed on the card but will be lost when casting. So all the dogs and vents have to be glued on again etc. furthermore the main armament has to be build the AA armament will be from Warlord.

Vanvlak, if you mean for others then there is a possibility to get a copy. But this is in no way professional! So expect some filling and sanding.

S.S. König
This is the start of a steam ship liner. It is a generic ship and based on a lot of contemporary pictures. I wanted to reuse the hull of the S.S. Bellota to safe me from doing a new hull and mould. should be more cost-effective this way. As you can see I work with o core of extruded polystyrene clad with paper for detailing. When you paint that later on with a diluted PVA it gets rock solid.

As there are quite a few ship models I made, distributed round the world now ,I thought it might be nice to show a few pictures of models build by you.
Lets start with a Hunt Typ II class model made by Karl Forder. What I especially like is that he put a barrage balloon up at the back of the ship!

Why, do you probably think, a submarine for Cruel Seas? the rules don’t include real submarine warfare as written. And Yes you are right but the “Boot” is so iconic for WWII naval warfare that i had to do one. I use rules proposed by David Manley in his rules for coastal warfare ( Action Stations). They can be incorporated or combined with Cruel Seas.
So there are quite a lot of U Boat models in 1/350 ,like the one below made by Revell, but they are not waterline and basically to small for my taste.
You can see clearly how much longer and wider the model is in comparison .

I finished the coastal freighter as a auxiliary Gunboat. The weapons are as always from the Warlord and Heroic & Pos weapons sets. VP 1037 is a Vorpostenboot as it was very often used in the channel , north sea and the baltic during the second WW. It was used for escort duties for small convoys , or for escorting U boats back to base through the biscay sea.
