Helen, thanks for sharing you story. Just a question, You had a driver, gunner, loader, and Commander on each vehicle? Or the 4th man was just a M60 machine gunner?
Okay 2nd question... what would have happened to all these dry branched with the backblast?
I concur that is sad you are the only one left. Was the picture taken in Malaysia?
PS: 1 question become 3... sorry!
Fantastic photo Helen and great piece of first hand information. You don't often get to see photos like that with the associated background information. It is indeed sad that you are the only one left.

I would like to know if there will be a good variation of poses. I have seen in your shop page there are a limited number of poses in your different ranges this would be nice to have almost a full squad with different figures.
You probably won't need many individual figures of ARVN sf as they where mainly distinguished from the regular infantry by their camouflage uniforms which had the same cut as the OD ones.
Just a pack or two of more distinctive figures, possibly with a range of weapons.
Thanks for all the splendid input chaps

I think Ged said USMC first. It's quite an undertaking as I think there will be a lot of interest in this. It's also the age old dilemma of ensuring that there's enough 'completeness' to encourage people to buy into the range, but needing to sell figures to support the development of that range.
A solid release plan will definitely help. This is the range that I've always wanted to commission myself (Paul Hicks' sculpts ideally!) so no pressure! 😂
I'd agree with both of you on that. As long as people can see what's planned that should be encouragement to buy into the range. Definitely looking forward to seeing some sculpts.Steve, it will be another started range by gringi40 with some figures and missing support. So, I stay at the existing ranges with chance of support like empress... :(
Steve, it will be another started range by gringi40 with some figures and missing support. So, I stay at the existing ranges with chance of support like empress... :(
…if there are other ranges being developed (I've not actually seen anything about Empress though?)
Currently being sculpted are Americans for the Vietnam conflict. These will start with USMC figures for the Battle of Hue City 1968 so some exciting news there. Vietnam was actually the reason that Empress Miniatures was established just over 10 years back and we got diverted so its time for us to concentrate, for a change!
Ah, I'm not on Facebook, I was looking at the main website.
To be honest, about 10 to choose from to make up a ‘squad’ of sorts for a FFOL type game would be a great start. 8)
as the Gringo figurines are large in general, I hope they will go with my chiltern lol
I'll try and post pics once they show some previews (not in Mr Gringo's thread though!) ;)

Now that’s a cracker! Congratulations Ged, nice looking model. It does look good.
Hoping you will do a MUTT at some point.Yes please.
Hue to go!
Curious coincidence. The Hue scenes in Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket were actually shot in the East End.
The palm trees were imported from Spain, set in concrete blocks and moved around for whichever shot they were needed in, after shooting they were given to a nearby garden centre which managed to rescue a couple of them.
The "paddy fields" were in East Anglia.
To be honest, I find it mildly irritating to see just a partial image. Can you ‘reveal’ the whole thing?+1

Hi Helen
Lovely photo and background info.
IIRC The Aussies had CG84 in Nam but having fired some practice roynds they were stuck in Bn stores as Swedes wouldn't suppky ammo for use in Nam. Also I don't think the 90s were used except in defense (eg Coral).
Anyway good to have ANZACs mentioned.

Well, I don't have a company, but my project management experience would lead me to:
My mistake, I thought you were one of the 1st Corps guys. Guess not.
Gaming's an odd industry, once you involve more than one person it becomes like herding cats, the more folk involved the bigger the herd. It's like no other sector I've worked in and I'm genuinely not convinced that rules which may work well elsewhere apply.

Now I may be wrong, but to me it’s good business practice to respond to customer enquiries, but I don’t get the impression that this manufacturer is that bothered about feedback (unless it’s positive). Maybe it’s more of a vanity project than a serious attempt to launch a comprehensive Hie range? I will be looking towards Empress for my Vietnam figure fix, they seem to have got all their cats herded. 🙂
Sorry to hear you haven't been happy with Gringos Paratrooper42.
It's quite A while since I had dealings with this company - quite a few years since I bought the Mexican-american range, but I found the company greatly concerned with accuracy, attention to detail and customer satisfaction.
Since then, I've followed the new ranges out of interest.
From my brief dealings with Gringos, I'm certain that you have been unfair suggesting that this is just an ego trip - I found that customer satisfaction and a desire to produce high quality goods was at the top of the list.
Also, I would never dream of telling someone how to run their company. After all, Gringos seems to have run very well since I bought the US-mexican figures from them when they first came out.
Also, this Vietnam range is only just developing, and I'm sure Gringos has a business plan ready for the launch of this range. It may not always seem logical to us punters, but I'm sure Gringos experience thus far will turn out well in the end.
The few shots I've seen so far suggest that this range is going to be good - the mule looks great.
As to ignoring customers who make less enthusiastic comments - and at the end of the day, I suppose we all have the right to choose who we reply to - the comments about weapons have been accepted and listened to.
I might also comment on figures, but I would never tell someone how to run their business!
Sorry to go on, but I just feel that criticisms of the kind you have made cannot go unanswered, and although I Don't know why Gringos chose not to reply, but from my past experience of dealing with the company, I'd suggest that Gringos are being professional and taking it all in their stride. So I felt - rightly or wrongly - that I should step in and "defend" them, even though I Don't purchase from them any more as my ranges are all complete.
I'm sure the range will develop and as I always think, quality is well worth waiting for.
I wish you luck with your collection and hope that you enjoy your Empress purchases.
Can we go back to talking about the figures and vehicles please? I've been having a look at the mule again and I know Ged was looking to do some variants; I was thinking that some load outs for ammo boxes, supplies, etc would-be really useful. They could be useful for game objectives, etc. A version with an M60 would be great too. Just some suggestions.Yes please (sorry this was posted while I was writing).

There’s another famous one of Capt Ron Christmas cradling a toy M-16 in his lap. I couldn’t find it but almost worth doing a conversion with a 1/72 M-16.
That said this thread has been dogged and tainted by what I feel is a generally unpleasant and at times provocative input. I am glad that Ged- (if I may be so bold) has risen above the baiting and I think that ‘page bump’ response from members was perfect.

Cos it’s in the original photo.Plus it keeps the muzzle out of the dust/mud.
The M-16 came with an el cheapo clip on bipod. It was spring loaded, rather like a giant clothes peg and of dubious value, although I suppose,if you had the time and inclination, could improve the accuracy of shots made from the prone position. It was liable to be lost.
...
I’ve fired an M-16 on the range with one and I’d suggest that’s about all it’s good for. Pointless encumbrance otherwise, it can’t be folded up it has to be clipped or unclipped to the barrel. Potentially useful if you are spotting for a sniper I suppose.
More bi-pod...That looks like something that gets used on horses.

Interesting about the ration pack contents. Is it that Marlboro is the most distinctive packet, or was there sponsorship involved in the prevalence of photographs of troops with the packet tucked in their helmets?

Huh. An over/under M79...I've never heard of such a thingA few of it was made, it was too heavy. (Designing a grenade launcher must be a nightmare, it is like solving multiple paradoxes at one. One-shot is not enough firepower, multiple shot is too heavy, on the gun is why you need to bring a gun too, separately is why you have extra luggage. lol ).

Pinned down behind the statue plinth, Ng thought back to the optimistic briefing yesterday.

Their leader had come to them with the contract, escort a package from a warehouse down to the docks. No fuss, no hassle. To ensure that, the contract paid for two technicals with machine guns, both with driver, navigator, gunner and loader, plus four guards with the package in a pick up.
No sane group would interfere with such a well armed convoy for such a "low value" package, the precautions were just to expedite the delivery.
The collection went without any problems and the three vehicles had made good time. Maybe that should have been the first warning.
The plan was to swap the lead vehicle at Gustav Square, the largest open space on the route.
Just as the second technical entered the square, the first one was hit, throwing the gunner to the road...
Just to say Gringo40s will be adding more Nam releases..
There were quite a lot of them floating about as it happened.

Does that guy have a "grease gun"?
The grease gun wasn't just popular it was the weapon issued to US tank crews until at least the late 1980s. Pretty much as it was the only thing handy enough to be toted in and out of the hatches of a tank above a pistol.
The Bradleys initially came with those dopey M231 carbines didn't they? They were, but not for dismounted use (I have an image of an Imperial Guard Chimera when I think of a Bradley with M231s).

Riding as a track commander, standing with an open turret hatch as your driver has it floored over undulating but fairly smooth terrain is an amazing feeling. Similar to a M113 series but better. A bit like a fast boat over waves. I bet it is even more amazing in an M1 Abrams but I have never been in an Abrams.
Being inside was claustrophobic for some but it never bothered me. We had a former paratrooper who always got motion sickness riding in back. I found it easy to sleep in the back on road marches with the constant hum. Sleeping buttoned up at night in the back was not fun as condensation would make it feel like you slept in the rain. Some folks had trouble with situational awareness in the back, making operations upon exiting difficult, especially for NCOs trying to organize their dismounts but it never really bothered me and I was pretty good at visualizing the area around the vehicle even with the limited view of the observation ports.
There was never enough room, gear was often strapped to the outside of the vehicle, too often resulting in lost equipment for careless troops.

there is that amended quote..
you were there! so its good to
listen and learn..i do have a
question as to the Armour...
enough not to worry...? ???
I do not wish to wander off topic with my nostalgic rambling. Sorry about that. Just feels nice to share the memories with folks that express an interest. As to the question, while I was not a tanker being Bradley crew sometimes felt like being a “tanker junior”… and while the armor sometimes made you feel less vulnerable than just being out on foot with a k-pot the size and noise of the vehicles made me feel vulnerable at the same time. So I suppose for me it was never enough to not worry. Not sure how Capt Jim felt about it in his Abrams.
There's something distinctly otherworldly about armour moving at speed. Leopards seemed to glide across the range at Puckapunyal. I have a vivid memory of them appearing out of a dawn mist and closing much more rapidly than one would have expected. It's a bit distracting for a moment or two.
Ged maybe you should consider a 1980s Cold War range, there's no shortage of late 50 somethings here. Key demographic. lol
