Our son (Hami on the forum) bought himself a 3D printer and, having bought me some Late Romans and Dark Age figures at Christmas, asked if there was anything that he could print for me. I could not think of anything right away. He is a qualified draughtsman and so I asked for a generic village. He designed the buildings himself and added a few bits downloaded from the internet.
So here it is.

The mill - it is on stilts and I still have to make a proper base for it with a weir, mill race and a horizontal mill wheel. (lift off roof is card covered in an old towel)

Hey Dad, thanks for the mention. The true glory goes to you and your expert painting skills. The roofs look awesome and there is no way that I would off been able to design something that looks so good.
I am going to print off your Barn and Chiefs house this weekend so they will be done.

As for Thingiverse, I have an account (Hami9209), I will not be posting my Dark Age village on there. If you are interested in buying the .stl files please as my Dad has said PM me direct as I can not always guarantee that I will be on the forums at sensible times etc.

Its a relaxing Hobby to have really. I sit and design a few things (currently working on WW2 Normandy Farm house, 28mm scale), and then you just print. the only annoying part is listening to the printer,

I have been commenting on your original post about 3D Printing Files,
I use CAD to design my stuff.
depending on what printer etc he is using less detail is better. I went too much detail and the printer couldn't handle it.
Thingiverse has great ideas on it and great Free files. Although because they are free some of the quality is not that great.
If you need any help or that please feel free to PM (it is the fastest way of getting me).

I do agree that 3D Printing is the way forward. You are able to print your whole table top at fraction of cost. although the initial set up is expensive but over time the printer will start to pay for its self.

Hami, I am in the US, but also interested. If you choose to ship to the US, I would buy a couple of the A frames and I too am interested in a dark age/early feudal church.

I just got the church from Hami and i have to say it is very good. Crisp printing with no printing lines or similar. I will be making it up and painting it shortly and will post a pic in a week or two.
Highly recommended.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the positive feedback. its my first ever 3D printed village that I designed (there will be more just looking for ideas at present).
My Dad will have a view more buildings next time I visit him, I have currently been working on a Barn (designed and printed), Chieftain House (designed and will be printed this weekend/week) and I am about 60% way through designing a fairly large Romano British Villa for him. o_o

Having acquired a one of the models, I promised Hami that I would post a picture when I had completed the painting.
This is his 3d printed church re-purposed for late Roman or Arthurian Britain.

I never printed the roofs however I am able to do tiles, slates etc but the software I am currently using fails making thatched roofs look like thatched roofs.

Those buildings are fantastic! What printer do you use? I'm always curious as to how expensive (or cheap) the printer needs to be to produce good terrain.

I started off with a cheap Chinese knock off printer, I very quickly passed the level of which it printed it. This can be seen in this thread, the pigsty that has bits missing etc was printed on this printer. The cheaper you go normally means the poorer quality at the end. I run most of my prints at 0.2mm layers I can drop that to make models (with a smaller nozzle) or small terrain parts with great details HOWEVER the smaller the layer the greater the time it takes to complete the print.
I have moved to a Prusa printer and that is what I currently use. The aftercare etc is great, and on the upside if you notice a part is wearing you are able to get some of files from the developer and print a new part (or ask someone to print on your behalf) so it only costs the price of plastic.
What you can achieve with a printer is limited to your ability. It is great, I love designing things and then printing them. Plus there is a great community which provide FREE files on which you can download and print yourself. I have recently posted some my recent work on there (https://www.thingiverse.com/Hami9209/about) for the community to use.

Thanks for that Hami. I have one of the cheap Chinese ones and I still haven't managed to get it working fully. It may be time to look at getting a proper Prusa one so.

That is a great paint job on the church. Did you use a card or print the roofs yourself?
I used textured plasticard for the tiled roofs. I am in the process of producing a thatched roof church and will post a piccie once it is complete.
I have to say Hami's printed model is very good and textured both inside and out.

Some time ago I posted about the generic dark age village that my son produced for me. Recently he added 3 new buildings.
The chief’s hall has a separate “porch” and lean to room. It does not have a roof as I wanted it to match the ones I already have so i made it with card and an old bleached towel.

Once again Dad, your painting skills and thatch roofing are really good. I like how you have finished the ruin off. I never thought of designing a destroyed roof for it. I look forward to seeing them on the table top when I am next back down on leave.
