Since childhood, playing the first game of warhammer quest in 1995, I fell in love with the Old World, the fantasy genre had everything for me. Adventure, characters you grew to love, small evil minions to enormous dragons, roleplay and a world where anything was possible.
In 2016 after a cataclysmic Old World event. I felt it would be wrong to lose that rich history and adventure because of inaction. So I set about building a copy of warhammer quest, salvaged parts from friends, forums and through trading. The game and project quickly grew beyond my initial plans.
The current trajectory is a 3D replacement for all released board tiles and fully painted monster tables.
-
Base game corridor and dungeon rooms completed
-
Objective rooms
One left to complete
Fighting pit
-
Lair of The Orc Lord Expansion tiles completed.
-
Catacombs of Terror rooms. There is still the chasm of despair and the dread kings throne room to complete, those are slightly more complex to make.
-
Hands down one of the best sets of dungeon tiles I’ve ever seen. It’s great to see your project all laid out together. Very inspirational as always.
-
Tilean Imperial Noble
Swordplay and arrogance are second nature to Imperial Nobles. The thrill of adventuring outshines the tedium of life at court, and many nobles set off for the most dangerous areas of the Old World in search of glory and treasure.

cheers mate, was pleasantly surprised to find such an active forum. This will definitely help with keeping track of all this.

Absolutely stunning. Keep up the great work!
-
:o Magnificent, very well done.
-
Those are lovely tiles.
-
Warhammer Quest was one of my favorites, too. Great to see it brought back to life in such a beautiful way!
-
Fantastic!
-
Lovely looking pieces, I really like the strong colours being used. Reminded me of the Hirst Arts based tiles that were shown on the forum there a while back:

I don't think fantasy gaming gets any better than well done 3d Dungeon layouts.
-
The paint jobs are very atmospheric. Can I ask how are you creating the tiles? 3D print or hand sculpting? Looks amazing. Also love the free hand on the tilean

Tha ks for the kind words everyone, glad the project had such a warm welcome

Cheers, genuinely pleased by that. Exactly what I wanted to do.

Cheers, the rich colours and contrast are probably the most enjoyable part of painting for me.
Those are some amazing projects, one thing I've noticed is how much bigger the tiles are than the ones I'm building. In one way it's a shame I didn't match those for sheer scale! Probably a bit too late for me now though, bit too far into the project.
-
Many more heroes to paint, but this gives players a chance to choose from a variety of party members. Some of my favourite models still left to paint
-
Those are superb. Really.
-
Good god what is Troll Squirt!? Paint jobs are high level.
-
The dungeon is extremely effective and atmospheric, and the minis have fantastic PJs! Nice!

Troll Squit is an ale from the brew houses in Talabheim. What they don't advertise is where the yeast, used in the fermentation process, comes from.

Kitbashed and sculpted, have been asked a few times about scanning and 3D printing, but I own none of the IP for this, and crucially none of the equipment :D

Hahaha, the classic red era PJ's. Heavily influenced by Obelix and Asterix.

Everything here is awesome!! I was actually inspired by a thread here where someone was wondering about dungeon crawls, and already decided to write some simple dungeon rules for myself. Seeing this just inspires me even more!! Wonderful!
-
The dungeon is awesome, the figures perhaps even more so! :-* Had WHQ but didn't ever play it, but still makes me happy to see it alive. Have a dungeon more like the Advanced Hero Quest tiles in mind that I would like to get to, and many appropriate figures in the works.

Thanks very much! Great to hear positive feedback.
Haha, funnily enough that's what kicked me into action on starting this thread too. Figured it was a good way to keep track of what I'd done so far.
Keep it up mate and let us know how you get on with the rules!

I was amazed to see so many still playing AHQ and HQ, some of the sets I've seen painted up are amazing. I managed to get a set of HQ miniatures based o the original artwork, but I haven't had the nerve to paint them yet.

Chaos themed monsters
-
Wonderful painting on those Chaos characters.
Outstanding game set you are putting together.
-
Just finished the sewer tile, must be getting better at this as it only took an hour to paint. Bit longer the make the damn thing though.

Thanks very much, one has to have a hobby :D

Very cool! I have a compulsion for making 3D versions of flat games myself, I love your take on this game.

It must be a compulsion, glad it's not just me.
Completed another tile

Fantastic work... nothing looks better on the table then details... details make the scene. You've mastered that on these tiles!
-
Just incredible! It's been a real treat to look at all of these tiles as well as the gorgeous models you've painted along with them. I'm in awe of your modelling and painting skill.
-
Lovely work, I'm enjoying seeing your painted miniatures and terrain.

I can't take the credit, the artists who worked on the tiles originally put a lot of effort into the design. Definitely important to make sure it is taken across into 3D though.

For fantasy it's Chaos warbands and orc warbands I'm putting together, mainly 80s and 90's stuff.

This is just outstanding. I love it. :-*

Oh superb, hands down my favourite GW era releases. You might be please to hear I've got a lot of these on my to do list.
Do you have a oink to you work. Really like the chaos tree you made.

Thank you!

Couple more finished yesterday. Only 8 tiles left to paint.

I missed out on Warhammer Quest - born slightly too late I think - but this thread is giving me immense nostalgia for something I never experienced. Really incredible job. I can't wait to see your 'game-ready' project and hope you'll continue to add to this for ages to come.

Sadly, none of the later dungeon crawl games (including the Warhammer Quest "remake") really captured the magic the same way Warhammer Quest (and to some extent, HeroQuest) did. It's not weird that you feel nostalgic. I never played WHQ when it was released, and maybe a few games years later, and I only played 1 or 2 HeroQuest games when it was released. I only got a copy for it about 3 years ago.
If you ask me, it is mostly an aesthetic thing. The models were very old school. The only current gen models that capture that same vibe for me are the Frostgrave and Oathmark range. Of course, sometimes old school is just old and hideous, so not all models were awesome, but for the most part, that was where it was at. Also, the dungeon tiles weren't overldone. They were basic and that was perfect.
But then again, I might just be a grognard. I prefer 16-but graphics and poor 3D graphics to high end eye candy as well.
Anyways, these tiles are obviously very nostalgia-inducing as well. RustyT, you are doing an amazing job!
Oh and Rusty, since you wanted to know about my dungeon crawl rules, I decided to start a thread on it.
-
Love seeing this thread pop up. This is easily the best WHQ adaptation to 3D I've seen, and glorious painting on the minis as well.
I started my 20+ year battle of creating dungeon crawl rules after WHQ disappeared...so I heartily enjoy seeing people properly do the classic. Would love to see some pics of a full table mid-game, such a glorious sight.
-
I think we are all wanting to see a bunch of these connected together!! PICS PICS!!

Haha, well okay then. I've got a campaign starting on 21st March, will be taking photos throughout. However I might stage a photoshoot this weekend if I get chance.

I’ve seen these tiles of yours on Facebook and love them so much. Really excellent job on what is my favorite GW game ever. I want to come to your house and play!
-
Incredible work. Wow :o

Tiles are continuing to look great, I'm eager to see them together!

That's a strange feeling, isn't it? I get it as well. I have a copy of Space Crusade I bought two years ago out of nostalgia for a game I never played back in the day!
-
Well I've been busy with RL, but time is closing in on the Exeter Games Gathering in September, which I hope the tiles will be ready for.
Here is the Fountain of Light dungeon room. It was interesting being able to use some different techniques on this one.
-
Man that looks so great.

Cheers! Although just realised I already posted this one, Haha.
Okay I've got Quirriks Laboratory in progress, it's built and undercoated so next up to paint. Photos to follow.

Haven't painted in a while, but think I've managed to shift the hobby block.
An ogre I've just finished for the monster tables.
-
Wow! I’m deeply impressed. That room is simply marvelous! And the ogre is also stunning.
Concerning the slightly off-topic discussion: for me WHQ is an all-time fave because I played it like crazy when I was younger and then played the app like crzay and currently play the 2nd app on my iPad like crzay... so maybe I’m a fanboy. lol
But what I really liked was that it captured the feeling of old school roleplaying without all this fancyschmancy stuff many modern dungeon crawlers bring. It’s you and your buddies against the monsters...depressingly outnumbered.
-

You described that perfectly, although I've really struggled to get 'into' the second version of quest game (end times?). Much prefer the first. And yes.. it's the roleplaying and difficulty which brings the team together so well, it feels like you really need to talk things through to make a group choice, which makes all the difference.
Thanks, the trouble with painting at this speed is realistically it makes getting everything painted is going to take an AGE!
Although I have finished the dwarf, made an attempt at NMM too.
-
Oh and I've also started a mini diorama, figured it's more interesting to take photos against this background than plain black.
Some examples included.
-
Very nice work! 8) :-* 8)
-
Everything's looking splendid. That ogre you posted above is a treat!
-
Yep, this is just the best. If I still had my WHQ stuff or could reasonably find a full set (or had the balls to make one!) I'd probably play it over any other dungeon game.
The mechanics are decent (if a bit dated), but it was the 160+ page role-play book which gave the game so much depth and interest. Also they were smart to have such immense encounter tables which included units from almost the entire Fantasy range at the time.
It had serious legs. You won't be seeing people desperately playing the rather-scant new boxed versions in 20 years time, I assure you.
-
Can't believe I missed this thread!

I picked up a cheapish set. My son loves it.

gorgeous!!

Great thread, great work. I’ve managed to hold onto my copy of quest over the years. Envy of the club, I was, especially as I’ve still got all of the character books too!

Apologies for the lack of replies, I started a new job and it took me away from the hobby for a short while. All good now.

It really did capture everything good about roleplaying.
This project started in spirit the day GW destroyed the old world, I just couldn't leave that behind, it really was too much a part of our gaming groups history and I needed to maintain that link.
Very nice work! 8) :-* 8)
Thanks very much :D

it ended up being really fun to paint, which was a surprise!

hahaha, my thoughts exactly, AoS lore is a bemusing jumble of ideas, not even in the same league as classic quest.
Can't believe I missed this thread!

Thanks very much, sorry for the lack of reply and updates, this project is far from over so feel free to keep an eye out

Really is a great fun game, played at the weekend and haven't laughed so much in ages.
gorgeous!!
Just call me Rusty, but appreciate the compliment :D

Gorguts Lair completed, only a handful of objective rooms to build and paint now.

Superb. Jealous.

Love the dungeon crawler work you're doing on your blog, that giant gribbly is great, and nice touch with the clear bases too.

Impressiv stuff. I like your painting style a lot. Very original. Overall fantastic project. Can we see a group pic?

beautifully done...

Truly a labor of love. Amazing.

Fantastic project :-* :-* :-* I would love to do something like this myself one day ;)

Oh, yeah, after complimenting I forgot to join the chorus - SHOW US ASSEMBLED DUNGEONS :D
Do you have the original doors or are you going to build or buy some? Plenty of vendors out there with reasonable stand-ins.

Thanks very much, I think it's taken on a bit of a cell shaded look as the project has progressed. Now I'm not a fan of that particular art style, but I am really happy with how these have turned out. Go figure, must be nostalgia :?
beautifully done...
thanks very much!
Truly a labor of love. Amazing.
Mentioned it before, but this is sort of an ode to the old world, almost a way to memorialise it for our gaming group.

been good fun, not setting strict time scales helped with this. Been going for years now.

Haha, I've uploaded a couple here now, but I've got a group of four players and myself GM'ing now meeting once a month so I'll upload some more following our next game on 17th August.
Doors I've got plenty, some secret weapon, some zealot miniatures and new arrivals from shed games.
I've also built a small diorama for taking photos, the tiles can be swapped which should be fun for the occasional photo shoot.
For anyone interested the gigantic spiders are a genus called Monocentropus Balfouri, they are communal spiders and will hunt in packs, I just loved the idea of these monstrosities stalking through the dungeons after unwary adventurers.
-
I love the spiders! They look very scary especially how they are crawling over everything. :o
-
It was out of necessity as much as a fun project, they are huge and it took some positioning to get them onto 50mm bases.
The bases still need a lick of paint, but decided to keep them plain to show off the superb sculpts. My boy loves them and we bought another so he could paint it and scare the crap out of his mum lol
-
Fantastic stuff! Those spiders are amazing.
-
Just WoW ... everything here is top quality
-
Amazing work! This thread constantly tempts me to dig my big box o' Quest out of storage.
I remain shocked that no modern dungeon crawler has managed to capture that same lightning in the bottle since original WHQ.
-
I think WHQ had several things going for it - things which haven't really been matched since:
1) While GW had a large hand in Hero Quest and Advanced Hero Quest, by the time they came to Warhammer Quest they could have abandoned the classic four-hero lineup but they kept it. Likewise they kept the more mainstream baddies so that you didn't have to be a Warhammer Fantasy nut to understand or enjoy the game.
2) They, very smartly, gave the game really long legs by including a 150+ page roleplay book, and 15 levels (which took exponentially longer to complete), etc. The portion between adventures was often as good as the game itself (which mechanically actually wasn't anything special).
3) It was a boxed game from what I consider GW's "golden era". They'd moved out of the basement but were very much still a young fledgling business on the rise, run by a handful of passionate geeks. This was just before the move to a more corporate, smart, and profitable company (the reason they're stupendously successful now, but at the cost of some of their quality). The game box itself wasn't designed as "half a game", where they planned on you buying other stuff to completer it later. It was a fully fledged game that would give you hours of enjoyment. Expansions would be just that, actual expansions to the game.
4) The smart design meant that after Levels 1 and 2 you started to encounter all of the miniatures you could buy for the Warhammer Fantasy range. You could easily proxy but it was a smart tie-in. It opened up a gateway for gamers who liked GW and Fantasy miniatures but weren't interested in buying/painting a block of 30-40 infantry as part of a large army. This game was the GW direction for people who wanted to go into the store and buy a couple blisters of fantasy minis they liked the look of.
5) The expansions were pretty good quality, and not terribly priced. I think a little hero box was $15 for the mini, and a handful of nice card tokens. Not extreme, but not super cheap. The smart thing here is that they were also unique cast minis. So if a Warhammer Fantasy player fancied a particularly special Imperial Noble or Trollslayer, it was a bonus that these existed. At the same time, if you had the rules you also didn't need to buy the special minis. If you had a Trollslayer, you could just run a Trollslayer.
6) It was heavily supported in a variety of magazines, including White Dwarf. Free dungeon tiles and adventures were included every month or two. More adventure tables, etc. Then it was supported by its own magazine for a short while. So the content was bordering on a proper RPG and less of a boardgame dungeon crawl.
7) This was before GW corporate era where they would occasionally include ideas, tables, charts, etc. for stuff that GW didn't sell. This was when geeks were still encouraged to geek and make stuff up, design their own stuff, etc. Articles included how to make your own dungeon cards, etc. etc. They even sold blank card decks which you could write up your own characters/baddies/treasures/rooms, etc. That would be a huge no-no nowdays.
8) It was just another example of how GW (and many other companies) used to put the idea of making a great/fun game on par with or just before profit. You didn't need to squeeze every single cent out of a customer.
Overall, just a very smart game. I'll admit the basic fighting mechanics are clunky and mediocre, but as a whole, it delivered a seriously fun and lengthy/deep package. I'm sad to say that having witnessed the 40K versions of the Warhammer Quest line (I even bought Blackstone Fortress), they just don't compare at all. It's unfortunate they bothered with the WHQ branding. They're fine simple board games, but there's little to no DNA remaining from the classic game.
-
I never got into WHQ as a kid but picked it up about 6 or 7 years ago. My son loves it, his questing knight beats the crap out of the bad guys while my chaos warrior... doesn't, lol. Still loads of fun and he enjoys being better than me. I even went so far as to design a whole bunch of new cards (thread on here somewhere) with nice pics stolen off the net (I think one may have been yours Elbows IIRC).
-
Yeah, if I ever got into WHQ again (unlikely since I'm making my own game...which was inspired by the disappearance of WHQ about 17 years ago!), I'd definitely make a bunch of my own stuff. Could replicate the box easily enough (dungeon cards and bits).
-
I think WHQ had several things going for it - things which haven't really been matched since:
I agree wholeheartedly with your list, which is a recap of everything everyone always waxes nostalgic about when discussing the game. Which is why I don't understand why no one has ever used a similar list to tick off the checkboxes and make a modern dungeon crawler that would scratch the WHQ itch.
I had hopes for Mantic's Dungeon Saga, where the kickstarter more or less promised the core game would be a modern Heroquest, and the Adventurer's Companion would make it a modern WHQ. Then they gave it to Jake Thornton to write freelance, and over on his blog he lectured us about how much he hated "RPG-lite" board games like the classic WHQ. So we got crap.
Seems like a dungeon crawler (even just a PDF with print-your-own tiles & cards) with 4-6 good starting characters, a strong bestiary, and lots of leveling-up rules and such would be golden over on Wargames Vault. All I want is a modern-system WHQ clone with the Warhammer serial numbers filed off!
-

Can't speak of quality, as I have tried none, but there are a couple on WV:
https://www.wargamevault.com/product/192168/Dungeon-Scum
https://www.wargamevault.com/product/148237/2-Hour-Dungeon-Crawl
Pretty sure to remember one named just "Trapdoor" but can't find it anymore...
-
I'm considering using Rangers of Shadow Deep with homemade or bought tiles (ttcombat does some decent looking mdf tiles), and working up a randomising system for generating dungeons, for solo play or coop instead of gm vs players.

I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Perilous Dark for Frostgrave, to adapt any awesome solo / random dungeon rules to RoSD!
I'm mainly shocked that no one in the last 20 years has said, "Well if GW is just going to leave the Classic Warhammer Quest formula on the table, I'll pick it up and make my own WHQ-clone! With blackjack! And hookers! ...or maybe just orcs and goblins."
-
I'm working on a dungeon crawl project at the moment which may eventually see the light of day. As with my other projects it's about making something I want to enjoy - and if it's worth putting out for others later, cool. It was started in my head in 2002...after the demise and slow disappearance of WHQ. While I'm not replicating the game necessarily, it's heavily inspired by the lack of a WHQ styled game existing.
Now mine has been in a dozen or more forms since 2002 (it pains me to even look at my original notes...) but a co-op minis+randomized dungeon game with a similar feel is just something I want. I've tried several options and never found any of them robust enough for me to enjoy. A lot of nice PDF games that ended up being a little on the lazy side or just a bit too RPG.
I even debated doing something similar to this thread, just replicating all of the original content in a non-GW fashion for use...but instead ended up going in a different direction. I don't believe my game will garner much attention, but it's been fun so far...only took me 17 years to figure out a suitable, elegant, fun idea. :D
I can't wait to see more of this thread - I even linked it to a couple facebook groups just to show off how inspiring I think it is. :D

The boardgame Descent looks a lot like a WHQ... descendant (hmm, double meaning in the name?).
The concept more or less moved from the wargames industry to the boardgame industry.
Or to be precise, the boardgame industry are better at it.
Mantic did a crap version called Dungeon Saga (havent played it, but the reviews agree that its not good), Privateer press did a couple of games that didnt enjoy much success, but that had more to do with the pricetag and lack of support.
Meanwhile in the boardgame industry titles like Descent, Star Wars Imperial Assault and probably others popped up that felt a lot like modern versions of WHQ.

Just found this thread and I am blown away!
Awesome and very atmospheric paintjobs. And I cannot believe how close your builds are to the old cardboard tiles. Back in the day I really enjoyed warhammer Quest. So this really plucks all the nostalgic strings.
-
I have to say DESCENT and IMPERIAL ASSAULT are nothing like WHQ.
What people like to overlook the act of exploration is probably the most exciting aspect of old WHQ and actual dungeon crawlers. That's missing from DESCENT and co, because the layout is set there, and visible from the outset. (I know that DESCENT's app version has a mode that has exploration - I've played it and it was not good...)
I too looking forward to PERILOUS DARK - if I will be able to convert RANGERS OF SHADOW DEEP into an actual dungeon crawler heavy on EXPLORATION, that would be amazing.
-
I have to say DESCENT and IMPERIAL ASSAULT are nothing like WHQ. [\quote]
I have to agree, especially when playing the default "the GM is also an adversarial player trying to win against the heroes" mode. Those were hands-down some of the most miserable dungeon crawler experiences of my life.

That's missing from DESCENT and co, because the layout is set there, and visible from the outset. (I know that DESCENT's app version has a mode that has exploration - I've played it and it was not good...)
I think the solo/co-op apps are a decent attempt to "fix" the Decent and Imperial Assault as dungeon-crawlers experience, but by adding features that the game should have been designed around. Mansions of Madness 2e is designed around being a solo/co-op app-driven game, and it's actually a very good exploration and investigation Mythos game. But it also doesn't feel like a dungeon crawler the way Classic Warhammer Quest did.
I think the exploration element you mention is part of it. The random dungeon from cards combined with the randomized "what's in the new room" via cards (or better, the Roleplay Book's charts) gave it that flair of not knowing what was through the next door. If you got fairly deep into the dungeon stack and had used a lot of your "once per dungeon" abilities already, you could find yourself hoping it was the boss room already so you could face them before you ran out of stuff and worrying that you might not have enough stuff left to pull off a boss room fight. Or, when using the event/monster cards, rolling a 1 in the power phase, flipping the next cards, and hoping it wasn't that #$^%@!! 1d3 Minotaurs card...
I think another huge factor was the massive bestiary in the WHQ Roleplay book. All the other dungeon crawlers today, Descent and Imperial Assault included, are very "these are the monster packs we've issued for the game, so these are the monsters you can face." Meanwhile, classic Quest gave us a bestiary of all the Warhammer Fantasy evil races released to that date, plus a massive list of monsters - some of which GW hadn't produced models for in years, if ever. This, plus the "how to run WHQ with a GM" sections made classic Quest into very much a dungeon crawler in the "like an RPG, but with most of the non-perilous parts stripped out." Not quite a RPG-lite, but more than a board game with FFG designed/approved missions - classic Quest struck a very happy middle ground.
I ran classic Quest every Thursday night at the FLGS for the better part of three years. My WHQ GM style varied from designing missions tailored to the cast of characters to - having had a big test in college that week, just officiating over a randomized adventure. The acknowledged style was that players were encouraged to roleplay a bit if they wanted, but no storylines would require their presence. If someone had to skip a week, even if we left off mid-dungeon, I just described the Dwarf leaning against a wall, revolving through a secret door the rest of the party couldn't reactivate, and then they'd find him stumbling confused into another room next week. These are all experiences I don't think I could manage by hosting any of the modern dungeon-crawlers as boardgaming with pre-built mission-challenges. Classic Quest gave you just enough stuff to make your own game, plus an amazing randomization-as-core-rules system that let you use as much or as little of it as you like.
And as evidenced by the list above, the formula is there, it's known, and it's not really lightning in a bottle. It's just that no one - not even modern Games Workshop - seems inclined to pick up the proven success left lying on the table and just recreate something that already works. That's what confuses me.
-
The project is not dead, it was just sleeping.
Managed to get one tile painted since 2019 - Quirrick's Laboratory, which feels a little bare if Im honest, but its pretty faithful to the white dwarf suppliment. Although I noticed I'd added an extra tile row in length! Measure twice cut once and all that.
And some monsters.
-
yay!
Quality work - nicely done, even if you think it looks bare.
Nice to see more, can we see more sooner ?
Considering how slow I am in actually getting to sit and paint, that one is still more than I probably got done last year.
Keep it alive :)
-
Just seen this thread for the first time. HUGELY inspirational! Well done!
I do sorely regret selling my copy now!
-
Nice to see more, can we see more sooner?
Absolutely, I'm going to put some of the other painted mini posts up, I just couldn't work out how to upload more than one photo to a post.
And thanks very much, that kind of enthusiasm really helps with a project as mammoth as this! (Mammoth for me anyway)
For two years I did zero painting, keep telling myself its a marathon not a sprint :D
Edit: I usually put the painted tiles in the first couple of posts on the thread to keep then better categorised
-

It's all available in Littlemonks ultimate adventure book (a contemporary updated version to print and play) you can pretty much get away with picking that up and having it printed. That guy is a machine and kept the game alive for years
And thanks for the kind words!
-
Some beasties I've painted for the quest monster tables over the past couple of weeks. Some were already part painted so it's not that I'm quick.
Also begun a diorama, mostly for taking cooler photos of minis. Will link some of those shots too
-
The project is not dead, it was just sleeping.
I'm glad you woke it up - it's an absolutely sensational project! :-*
One thing that I'm curious about; do the accessories and features you model into the floor tiles interfere with placing the models in the dungeon at all?
-

Yes they do, sort of, lol.
Although anything larger than a weapon is magnetised so I can take those on and off for gaming. The little skulls, swords and stuff like that I make sure they're positioned so a model's base can go over the top.
-
Ah, so the bigger bits are held on with magnets then? Smart. :) I did wonder, as this sort of thing is the main reason I never did any "modelled" dungeon crawler tiles myself over the years. I almost made a set for AHQ on at least three occasions (including very recently), but never really figured out how to keep the tiles both attractive and practical.
-
beautiful stuff! please keep them coming! :)
-
How did i miss this thread? :o Amazing stuff, love what you build 10/10
-
I’ll echo everyone’s comments- that’s all outstanding work!
-
I loved WHQ (so much I even played the App onmy iPad for months)! I’ll echo what has been said about WHQ being so much more than modern Crawlers. For me it was possibly the best game GW ever produced.
So now let’s come to the thread‘s main attraction. The fabulous dungeon and the magnificent miniatures! I love them. It’s really things like this that make me enjoy exploring LAF. :-* :-* :-*
Please post many, many other things here. We all want MOARE! lol
I’d like to add that another thing I loved with WHQ and haven’t really seen replicated were the non-dungeon events. Exploring a city, buying stuff, getting chased by the citguard, winning a brawl in the pub and praying to Sigmar. All those random tables gave so much atmosphere! It really *felt* like an RPG … certainly was better than some I participated in.

The biggest issue I have found is balancing cost, usability and aesthetic. Ended up with tiles smaller than I would have liked for gaming, but I think they look good and the cost wasn't too high for the resin casts.
Over all would have done a couple slightly differently if I did them again. Magnetic pieces ended up being an absolute blessing for gaming, but not so fun transporting, haha

I had not given the project the effort it deserved so the time got lost in the Nether.
Cheers for the vote of confidence!

Thanks heaps Pattus, I need to learn how to multi-quote don't I? HAHA
-
I loved WHQ (so much I even played the App onmy iPad for months)!.
I was so addicted to that game! Wish they'd done a little more with the settlements though.
Speaking of settlements, there is a project called the Ultimate Adventure Book and ot has three suppliments covering a huge range of, imo very faithful and comprehensive hazards, settlement events and treasures. We use them in all games now. They made the game into an almost flawless rpg crawler
And thansk for the kind words too 😁
-
Painted up some snotlings too!
Build the tomb objective room this evening, will paint it over the next few days and then only a few more left to build.
-
So cool. Love all that era of mini. I really want some Orc Big'uns now.
-

Yeah, the settlements were a weak point in the game. Did you ever finish it? I tried to level up so many characters that I lost teack of the campaign and when I was ready my party was so overpowered, it became tedious.
WHQ2 from the same company was also great. I played it a lot when my baby daughter was born and needed to be carried around all the time to stop crying and sleep: you’d see me slowly walking around with a babycarrier and my iPad in my hands :)
Where can I get all these books you speak of btw?
Edit: found the Ultimate Adventure Book project. Will have a look!
-
Superb - well worth the effort of a marathon, plus the simple fact your using them to.
I consistently keep reminding myself too about marathons in miniature painting ;D
Plenty to work on for me in the mountain, but I will not reach your level of skill anytime soon
Keep it up and do keep posting occasionally. preferably more frequently - its always good to see someone has a passion for a project like this.
-
Your flagstone bases on those snotlings are amazing. Did you glue on each individual "stone"?
-
The only links I can find are to one that looks like it may be related to the computer game - https://bwarhammerquestcustomized.runboard.com/
and another to a Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/WarhammerQuest/
Is either of these the correct one for the Ultimate Adventure Book? I am not, nor shall I ever be, a member of Facebook ;D, but the other one wants you to set up a free account to get access. Before I go to the hassle of creating a throwaway email account, I'd like to know if it's as least the correct site.
I still have Advanced Heroquest in the loft, but WHQ passed me by, for reasons that presumably made sense at the time ???
-
So cool. Love all that era of mini. I really want some Orc Big'uns now.
Hahaha, this is how it starts! You should probably pick up a copy of the rulebook too if you haven't already, you know... for research ;)

I'll be honest, I don't remember if I finished it or not, I played the main campaign to the end, but picked up the expansions and I think 2 came out and I lost interest.
Glad you found the adventure book. I've got some dioramas and stuff in the book too. I now tell people I'm published... lol

I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD, as a result projects like this give me a strong reference point to show despite difficulties I am able to organise myself enough to create something large that takes a decent amount of commitment and focus. It seems daft, but this is a big deal for me personally.
Will definitely keep updating, I've got at least four mini projects for this on the go right now. Just a case of which one will my brain allow me to finish first, haha
-

I did this to start with, so yes I did with these snots, but it is insanely time consuming and was really only done to preserve the slotta bases. So for some miniatures I will do this, but for others I have begun to use Wills Plasticard - York Stone design (the skaven gutter runners which are nearly completed beside me now have no slotta tabs) . It's perfect and saves hours in labour.

https://bwarhammerquestcustomized.runboard.com/
This is the link, it's tough getting started, but we'll worth the effort once you get signed up. The Facebook page redirects here.
The owner Littlemonk is a man-machine, I've never know anyone so committed to his work and he is singlehandedly keeping the game engaging and exciting.
It's also never too late to start, but I'd source everything 3rd party personally now, the game is too highly priced for the original now.
-
For anyone interested here is a photo of my diorama on the back inside cover of the Ultimate Adventure Book
-
Perfect!
What models do you use for the doors/portcullises?
-
Perfect!
What models do you use for the doors/portcullises?
Those were from Zealot miniatures I believe, I should probably stick a post up about those too, and some secret weapon cave doors I painted up too. Ha! Turns out I probably painted more up than I thought.

Thanks :D I have loads of Citadel stuff from that era and I have no problems with "counts as", so I'll jump through the hoops and what's there.
-
Zemjw - Fantastic, I see absolutely no reason to delay starting your quest project :D
-
That diorama is fantastic! Gets everything together what I love about WHQ!
-
Hey Rusty-
It was a pleasure chatting with you on reddit, and I'm thrilled to see you active again over here!
Going back to the beginning, I do believe I remember this thread. Once again, excellent work all around; huge fan of your painting.
-
This is still the best Warhammer Quest project I think I've ever seen.
-

Haha, same. I did so many of these diorama photo shoots I started to panic I'd lost my mind, but it just reminded me of those old white dwarf ones.
Hoping to get a game in soon with almost fully painted minis (will need to plan the dungeon around what I've done, haha)
-

Hey mate, great chatting, it was your conversation that reminded me to get my butt back over here, really appreciate that!
Thanks for the kind words too, I'm dropping another tile in a min too ;D
-
This is still the best Warhammer Quest project I think I've ever seen.
Love this, thanks Elbows!
-
Tomb chamber finished! Only three or four more left of the tiles, but thousands of miniatures.
Will need to do a full group shot at some point
-
Blimey! You continue to blow our minds! Seeing stuff like this, I wish to possess a shrinking ray to explore it as a model soldier myslef! :o
-
Amazing! What tomb model did you use for the above? Looks familiar...
thousands of miniatures.
Wow, are you going for the complete ensemble from the RPG book?!
-

It's from zealot miniatures, I had an old grendel metal one, but it's honestly too heavy to game with, haha.
Yep, all ten monster tables, have all the miniatures more or less based and undercoated (with the exception of the dark Elves as I haven't really touched them yet.
I'm also missing a greater daemon and a few other pieces, but I'm mostly all set. All original metal games workshop models too, from citadel through to just before the change to finecast. Have some forgeworld resin too, but only because it's absolutely gorgeous.
-

Honestly that's why I do it, the games were we RP the characters is epic.

I'll ehco that echo..... brilliant thread old boy.
-
Absolutely amazing work all through this thread!
I am contemplating dong something similar for my Siege of the Citadel board game. Your work is definitely inspiring me to go ahead and try.
-
Skaven gutter runners painted, these took way longer than I'd planned. Still pretty happy with them and finally have some painted rats so will be good for gaming.
As always, really appreciate the kind words, helps with the effort to push on with the project!
-
Love the rats, the tomb chamber is amazing!
-
Gutter runners were quite nasty iirc! Yours look brilliant, not sure if it will be more fun to swarm a poor isolated hero (wizards, beware!) or to cut bloody paths into them with a valiant (if unruly, thieving, illoyal and alcohol addicted) group of heroes!
-
Aye, the gutter runners are mean have some cool special rules too iirc
-
Zombies and skeletons
-
This thread is incredible. It fills me with nostalgia and makes me lament that I got rid of my copy of WHQ in my foolish late-teenage years! You are very talented!
-
Outstanding. utterly.
Plenty of nostalgia and envy both.
Thanks for sharing all of this.
-
Thanks guys, really appreciate the kind words, it's a labour of love.
Finished 12 rats I had in the painting pile for a long time. Some of the bases were done very early in the project and don't quite match the tiles, but I was trying to work out a way to base that wouldn't take a huge amount of time. I never found a quick way really.
-
All three ogres finally finished, quite a few different techniques for painting these guys, but well worth the effort as I rate the Perry Ogres amongst my favourites.
-
Awesome stuff, friend!
-
Awesome stuff, friend!
Thanks very much Ockman!
-
Tiny update, Bogoff the Snotling finally painted
-
That's very nicely done.
-
Really nice miniatures and great paint jobs!
Kudos!
GS
-
Superb!
-
So...game night at Rusty's house? :D This stuff looks amazing.
I am contemplating dong something similar for my Siege of the Citadel board game. Your work is definitely inspiring me to go ahead and try.
Do it. Start today.
Perhaps I should do something similar, considering my hyperfocus on collecting Warzone models lately.
-
Yay! Here comes the experience food for Lvl 1 parties, zombies, rats and…ogres. Wait, ogres! :o Let’s get out of here! Quick!!!
Awesome additions, mate!
-

lol Done! Er, started anyway...
-
Cool ogres. I think they are my fav's also. especially the 2 handed mace.
-
Thanks for all the kind words guys.
Would definitely like a game night! All round mine, bring snacks!
Painting Gorgut, but couldn't complete it. So finished these two orcs so something got completed tonight.
-
Couple of trolls from the collection finished
-
Nice! those trolls are the best era trolls. Love the stone trolls especially. I'm always on the lookout for them but they go for megabucks on ebay.
-
Wonderfull thread.
Amazing modern paintjobs on lovely old skool mini's.
-
Gosh! The troll, but also the orcs are awesome! :-*
-
Great painting, love the bases too.
-
Well done.
-
Been busy painting and realised I haven't updated in a while. Still at it and making good headway through the monster tables
-
I have literally spent the last half an hour looking through this thread from beginning to end. Outstanding work!!
You are incredibly talented. It's all so gorgeous. I love the older style of painting you have achieved on the models.
Bravo
-
Love the spider riders. I think I have 1 or 2. I must get a whole unit now!
-

Thanks, that was nice to read. It's a labour of love so this kind of comment really helps with motivation.
Checked out your blog, love you work too
-
Love the spider riders. I think I have 1 or 2. I must get a whole unit now!
Thanks very much! Didn't like them a few years ago, but something changed and now I think they're incredibly cute!
They're a bit pricey, but if you stick with it and don't rush you'll find some at a good price
-
I've just discovered this thread, this series of figures is absolutely wonderful! And I love the tattoo on the giant.
-
Love it every time this thread pops up. Great stuff!
-
Wonderful work indeed :-*
You've tackled and aced a project I've been wanting to take on for ages, but never did find/make the time for; recreating a beloved board game from the nineties in 3D/2.5D.
It's truly inspirational to see how you've managed to get so close to the original artwork with your tiles. The bright, nineties paintjobs on the units work equally well in evoking that nostalgic feel of these old games.
Please keep it up! :)
-

Thansk very much!! Very nice to hear :D

I'll crack on with the painting then, I have to admit I'm a bit slow sometimes!

You've given me the kick up the butt I needed to finish building the fighting pit today. The project is nearly finished so the motivation is appreciated!
The colour choices aren't to everyone's taste, but I just love the bright colours on orcs and gobbos. Very pleased to hear they're well received and have that quintessential 90's vibe 8)
-
Finished building the fighting pit and also finished painting a warboss
-
Very nice. The green looks great. Is there a shield or weapon to go on the back?
-
Nice paintjob again :)
And yes; I believe there's a shield that goes on the back. And a tiny Grot with a horned helmet to go on the base...
-
Beautiful painting through out, the dungeon tiles are excellent.
I can't believe I've not seen this thread until now, very happy I found it.
-
Really beautiful painting throughout. That giant's tattoos though - masterful.
-
Very nice. The green looks great. Is there a shield or weapon to go on the back?
yeah, the shield doesn't fit too well so will paint it up eventually, but have a replacement he'll be getting when I get round to it in the next month or so.
-

The snotling was called in to work the door at the Dwarves Head Inn (my 5th edition army)
-
Beautiful painting through out, the dungeon tiles are excellent.

Thanks very much! It's probably a bit niche with it being Warhammer Quest, but it's very much 4th/5th/6th edition really.
-
Really beautiful painting throughout. That giant's tattoos though - masterful.
Cheers! They were almost an afterthought, only added them because he looked so bare. Now everything is going to get a tattoo if there's enough room!
-
I don't generally put up work in progress photos, but I am pretty pleased with the fighting pit. One wall magnetised for access and to take cool photos :D
-
Not exclusively warhammer quest, but thought I'd do a group shot of my orcs and goblins, pleased with the progress so far
-
Those orcs are fantastic. They simply ooze classic Warhammer. Lovely stuff.
Also, only orcs would think of using ballistas indoors! Genius, probably.
-
Warhammer Quest Ex-Blood Bowl player. The rules, written by Jason Hill were originally published in Citadel Journal #16 back in 1996.
The miniature is a norse blitzer I thought looked ostentatious, and mean enough, to have survived a Blood Bowl career.
-
Warhammer Quest High Elf Noble finished, ended up gifting this to a long standing friend, who will definitely be bringing it to the next game
-
Another couple of Trolls done too
-
And an ogre, although he looks more like a disgruntled NPC than an orge warrior!
-
Love those trolls. They look great.
-
The violet in the skintone shadows looks great. Love the look.
-
Love your style! Very cool stuff. Especially the Trolls. People often pained them alike I think. Not yours though!
-
That second troll looks the business. Nicely done sir.
-
Tiny update, Bogoff the Snotling finally painted
Ah, so wonderful to see, and takes me right back to the original concept, thanks for that trip down amnesia lane, Dean (Bass)
-
Fantastic stuff!
