Title: Uniform colour matches (preferably Vallejo) for AFSR & Red forces in 1919
Post by: Ballardian on February 19, 2019, 02:55:41 PM
I'm hoping that someone can push me in the direction of some convienient (preferably Vallejo) colour matches for AFSR & Red troop uniforms in Southern Russia around the 1919 period, many thanks in advance :)

I think a mixed palette of browns and tans will be your best bet, allowing for uniforms in different stages of age/disrepair and coming from various supply sources.  I have used English Uniform as the darkest shade, with US Tan Earth and Orange Ochre for lighter tones.  I tend to use a brown wash, then go over with the same shade lightened up with a bit of white or yellow (and highlight again if you have the time and inclination).

That has produced some pleasing results for both Whites and Reds.  If it all looks too drab, the Whites can be livened up with one or two of the so-called 'coloured regiments' (I have just completed a Kornilov Shock Battalion in black, not that black lightens anything up, but there a few in white or light blue tunics you could go for), while officer regiments with mid blue (sorry, can't remember what I used) trousers and a yellow stripe work too.

The fact is that the Russian uniform of the period of the First World War (and, accordingly, the Civil War) did not have a brown tint, but a light gray-green (the color of green dry peas). I do not use paint "Vallejo" so I can not say exactly what kind of paint to use.

I find re-enactors a very useful guide to colours. They care more than pretty much anyone else about details.

And the Russians sure love their re-enacting.

Unfortunately, reenactors have different degrees of competence and they also often have mistakes. However, much less frequently than in feature films. But, thank God, there are more genuine things)))

They do, indeed in fact the whole place seems to be stuck somewhere between folk singing God Save the Tsar and the NEP. Over and over again.

I’m more of a ‘shoot the kulaks’ man myself. ;)
