I am invited to a small gathering of DBA folks in may. We are playing in 28mm with big bases 6x5cm for Infantry with 6-7 minis on a base.
The setting is somewhere italo-greek around 350 before our time.
I am trying to build a force for the city state of taranto. Called Taras at the time.
Didn't get much into its history, but the symbols of the city are dolphins, dolphine-riders and some shells.
Will try to do without decals...:)
Here is the first batch.
So about the size of one base.

Those are lovely. I don't know how folks do shield designs like that with a brush.
-
You're not alone! A pretty good start.
-
Those are beautifully done! Looking forward to seeing more of your Tarantines.
-
Great shields. The only time I was able to do really fine work on shields was back in the days of using Humbrol enamel paints. I wonder whether enamels are easier to control or whether my eyesight was just better.
I will look forward to seeing more. Tarantines. Am I correct in thinking that they used more cavalry than mainland Greeks?
-
Gorgeous work. :o Will you be basing them in two ranks?
-
Tarantines. Am I correct in thinking that they used more cavalry than mainland Greeks?
I don't know that Taras fielded more cavalry than mainland Greeks, but they were famous for their cavalry. Taras fielded shielded light cavalry at a time when Greek cavalry were unshielded. As mercenaries in early Hellenistic armies, they became such a common feature that 'Tarantine' became a label applied to all shielded hippokontistai regardless of their ethnic origin. The same pattern can be observed elsewhere with pseudo-ethnic military units as well in the period.

Those are lovely. Looking forward to seeing the force finished. What figures are you using?
-
Some great looking figures with some nice shields! Well done.
-
Thanx everyone for the comments....;)
@irregulars war nic
Thank you for the info about the shields and cav....:)
Okay, here is next batch of minis.

Great work DonVoss. :-* :-*
-
Very nice. Love the trireme on the shield.
-
Great painting, maestro! This is really really beautiful brushwork.
-
Thanx gents....;)
Here are some more hoplites....;)

I think the shields are top notch Don, well done. You'd have to give a shield transfer some extreme fettling to get it to look that good!
:-*
-
Okay, as I finished this little project back in April. So here are the results....;)

The army played quite nicely, but I have no oponent here in Berlin gaming in this DBA-format.
So I am starting over, doing a second army....;)
Here are the first Hoplites for the second army...

Looking forward to seeing these too. The first lot are excellent.
-
:-* A wonderful looking collection...great work on these
-
Stunning!
-
Lovely work, but could you not find a non-Hoplite army to
oppose your first (Hoplite) army?
I have found Hoplite V Hoplite to be (like the original) a
long slow slogging match.
-
Those figures are beautiful! :-* The shield designs are beyond amazing.
-
Thanx, gents.....;)
I painted a few more hoplites and paired them with some left overs from back in the year.
Gave me enough minis to fill some bases.
They are still some WIP, but I could filed them for a first game or two...;)

Next are some special troops like skirmishers and cav.
but could you not find a non-Hoplite army to
oppose your first (Hoplite) army?
Thanx for your advice.
I have a little 15mm thracian army, wich I enjoy very much. But most of the games agaainst hoplites are somehow hiding in the bushes for hours and waiting for a high pip-roll to get the ambush on. These are really time consuming games....;)
And I like the pushing around games...
Cheers,
Don
-
Absolutely beautiful!
The painting is gravest but the shields are stunning :-*
-
Hi Don,
Great looking hoplites! Really like the shields. :D are you painting them free hand or are they transfers??
Also is Thomas not playing DBA in Berlin? He was with us in May. Otherwise you're always welcome in Hamburg :)
LS
-
Thanx gentlemen....;)
@LazyStudent
What was your party in the DBA-Event at Franks home. Syracusae?
Mine was Tarent or Taras.
And yes Thomas is palying DBA (mainly in 1/72) but switched to Triumph.
Cheers,
Don
-
Hi Don,
I was the other Thracian player, alongside Thomas ;)
Ah ok, I have never tried triumph, what is the battle like?
Best,
LS (Edward)
-
Ah, Edward...its you...;)
@Shields
Yes freehands.
@Triumph
Havn't played a game yet. Looks cool from what I saw at the club. But it seems to take a little longer.
Anyway...I try to concentrate on DBA at the moment. Enough work for me....:-D
Cheers,
Don
-
I like Triumph but it does take a bit longer than DBA.
-
Today was gameing day...so I could only make a few strokes....;)
A DBA camp and some skirmishers.

They look great. :-* :-*
And the house came out very well. :)
-
Thanx rumacara....;)
Okay, here is what I painted over the weekend. Thou the elefant is just neewly based and got some more highlights. Painted it in the spring...
I added an elephant and some pike (one is still WIP). Just in case I want to go pyrrhos or so...:)
And of course a Baker marker wich can double as a piece of terrain in my mortal gods games...
I had these warlord plastics laying around from an ebay buy. Not sure if I want to replace them.

And alittle closeup from the finished pike element.

Another lovely little project 8)
-
Excellent work!! :)
-
Get a few decent felt-tipped pens; they're good friends to the ancients gamer with shields to do up (I speak as the proud owner of a 10mm Greek army).
-
Fantastic work!
-
Absolutely fantastic! Love the statute and the elefant :-*
-
Lovely Don
-
:-* totally loving this thread...awesome brushwork and great modelling skills....inspirational stuff....can’t wait for the next update
