Title: Classic Napoleonics
Post by: ilkley Old School on February 24, 2019, 12:00:32 PM
I have been collecting 20mm Classic Napoleonics for nearly 2 years now and have been charting my progress on my blog.  https://ilkleyoldschool.blogspot.com/?m=1 (https://ilkleyoldschool.blogspot.com/?m=1)

I have had fun by sourcing and painting these figures.

Here are a few pictures of some of the figures.

I love the nostalgia of this thread. Well done ilkley. :-* :-* :-*

I remember my very first wargame 1972-ish . I went round my pals house with my unpainted airfix to be presented a table tennis table with hundreds of Painted Hinton's, all painted in your style, by his Dad.

What a slippery slope I was on! lol

Those are lovely. Must say that the older I get, the more often I prefer simple paint jobs with no shading, highlights, etc. - maybe because that is what my ability has declined to, making a virtue of necessity  lol - but more due to the fact, I think, that the prime colours "pop" the figures more, especially in a case like this.

Anyway, splendid collection, and hoping we see more posts in the future!

Really enjoyed these.  While they are all very impressive, I particularly like the way you have done the faces.  I am struggling with my Der Kriegspielers because the facial detail is so variable.  My normal wash technique really is not doing them justice.  Can you describe your process for the faces?

Thanks!

David

Hi David

A Wash technique will not work on these older figures.

My method is to cover the face with Red Leather. I use Vallejo 70818.

I then paint the nose, checks, chin, ears and a thin line underneath the nose to represennt the mouth using Humbrol Acrylic Flesh 61.

Two coats of gloss to finish.

Thanks Mark, judging from the pictures I thought that might be what you were up to.  I'll give it a try on my next unit.  Thanks for the detailed instructions and colors for reference.

Absolutely lovely, like so many I started out with Airfix Napoleonic's in the 60's, by the 70's I was living and working in SE London and found Rye models a tiny little shop owned by one of the guys who started tbr South London Warlords. That introduced me to mini figs, to this day my Napoleonic's are mini figs, including some painted in a similar style to yours in about 1978.
I did buy a number of boxes of the superb Perry Napoleonic's, but after painting one box of British infantry I gave a couple of boxes to a young cousin who showed an interest and sold the rest to fund buyi g more mini figs!! I just love how simple they are and painted in simple block colours they look fantastic massed on the table :-)

My latest shiny figures finished today.

Both of these are original Hinton Hunt figures. Picton has been painted with scarlet coat, rather than black, based on HH original painting instructions which can be found on Clives Hinton Hunter blog.

My Classic Napoleonics have been out on manoeuvres. In all the collection consists of 10 infantry battalions each of 24 figures, 4 cavalry regiments of 12 figures, 6 batteries of artillery with 4 crew. There are also 4 companies of skirmishes each of 6 figures. Finally there are 7 generals and a few odd single figures.

In all there are 347 figures mostly Hinton Hunt, both original and recasts, Alberken, Les Higgins and Garrison and the odd Rose and Douglas figure.

I use full strength bleach to remove old paint an varnish.

Here is  Brunswicker pre bleach.

And after a 8 hour bleach he is a good as new and you can see the detail. Not bad for a figure that is probably 50 years old.

Here are a couple of original painted Hinton Hunt units I picked up at my local Oxfam a couple of years ago.

I repainted the bases in Humbrol 80 and based them before finishing off  with a nice coat of gloss varnish.

Excellent figures brings back memories. Your troops seemed to be all singly based? Does it take long to move the figures each turn?

I have now finished the remaining figures for the 9th Prussian RIR (21st Regt in 1815).  I hoped to finish these by the end of March but they are a few days late. So far this year I have now finished 38 foot and 12 cavalry figures - so 62 points.

The infantry are Les Higgins British rifleman. The standard bearer is a LH officer who has had his arm adjusted and a pin added for the flag pole. The flag is made from a fizzy pop can, a la Wellington Man. The Officer and Drummer are old Hinton Hunt figures. They probably should have black facings but I have done them in red to match the flag and add a bit of colour

Really lovely. Your efforts bring back early wargaming memories, although my first figures in the 1970's were Airfix plastics. A friend and I then graduated to Prince August with metal gleaned from a local printer where I worked part time.

Thanks for sharing these with us! They look magnificent.

You do a great job on those. Sometimes I paint 25mm Minifigs for a gentleman from 'round here and I'm rather sure that these older figures are a fair amount more work than new 28mm figures with all their folds to work with and so on. On top of that gloss varnish is quite unforgiving in photos. All the more impressive since you do 20mm figures.

Anyway, great job.

Hi Paul

My next unit  is a 6 figure squadron of French Line Lancers.

The Hinton Hunt figure on the left is both taller and fatter than the pirate copy Der Kreigspieler on the right. I add a bit of Milliput to add some extra height. There is not lot you can do to make figures fatter.

I have had a squadron of Scots Greys on my painting table for a while now.  So this weekend I took a break from my 15mm WW2 and finished them off.

I got these original Hinton Hunt figures a few years ago and the previous owner had made alterations including docking the tails.  They needed a bit of work particularly on the swords which were fragile. The trumpeter was made by a transplant from a Newline figure.
