Whilst clearing out my garage I found a box of vinyl floor tiles with a small mosaic pattern. Rather than throw them out I experimented with making some dungeon/crypt tiles.
The vinyl is 2.5mm think and is easily cut, just a few score lines on the top surface to cut through the top printed layer and they snap nice and cleanly.

I just cut them to shape then applied a household matt varnish before sprinkling a mix of sand/dirt and green flock, the latter being added to the areas between the slabs to look like moss. Once dry I sealed them with a second coat of the same varnish.
I've used 4 tiles from the box of 20 and have enough to cover a 4' x 4' table, total time involved in making them around 3 hours (excluding drying time)

Very cool. Your additions really add a nice effect, without going overboard.
Wth a few walls and buildings, could be used for above ground plazas as well.
-
They'll do nicely :)
-
Nice idea! They look really good.

Most excellent 8)

Might have to pinch that! It's a great idea, particularly for storage ease.

Is the vinyl textured with the stone pattern or did you print a stone pattern and paste it on top?

It came with the stone pattern on top, with a slight 3D texture to it.
All I did was cut, varnish, scatter while varnish wet, leave to dry, re-varnish.

That's awesome now where to find that style of vinyl?

I looked for this s9rt of thing for a long time without success. Maybe these things find you, rather than the other way around?!
-
They’re great , cheap to make, quick to get to the gaming table and all round awesome. ;D :) :D
-
What brand and pattern are those? Gonna have to pick up a box just in case!
-
To be honest I'm not sure - the box label just days 'Pattern Number HY-874 Grey Small Mosaic Tile'

That is a great use of those tiles. I used to own a set myself, but I think I either sold them or gave them away.
For anyone who is interested, and lives in the UK, you can find those tiles here:

£19.99 for 36x 12" x 12" tiles is the cheapest deal they have

Those look like the ones - thanks for finding them :)

Made some rubble for obstacles on the tiles.
Simple mix of aquarium gravel, caulk and PVA put into small piles on a plastic sheet. Once the mix had dried, peeled off the sheet and dry brushed with greys and creams to match the tiles, then a bit of flock was added to represent earth and moss growth in the same way as the tiles.
The piece bottom middle in the first photo is designed to fit wall to wall across a corridor piece.

And now to make a load more. Some will be made in formers so that they fit to corners and edges.

They look very suitable 8)
How about a femur or two sticking out of one ;)

Very effective and pretty cheap to me do too, I'd guess?

Yes, very cheap indeed, probably a few pence of material in each. They also pretty quick to make, put the three ingredients into a pot and mix them round, then spoon out little lumps of the mix and flatten.

It works well, it may have to try it out.

Started making some more rubble, this time with some blue foam blocks in the PVA/Caulk/Gravel mix
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/38/1512-130319143230-38079492.jpeg)
Blocks are 10x10x20mm and 10x10x10mm and have been roughed up by shaking them in a plastic box with some stones
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/38/1512-130319143232-380831350.jpeg)
Gave them a spray of Water/PVA (70/30) mix to help it all bond as it dries.

Any protruding legs yet? :D
-
Not yet, need to find my box of plastic skellies :)
-
Very nice all 'round. Many thanks to tikitang for the link to the tiles on E-Bay (now just need to see how painful the shipping to our rock in the English Channel is going to be) . . . .

Pardon my ignorance but when you say caulk is that the same as filler?
-
Decorators caulk comes in tubes like silicone. If your in the UK then Screwfix is a good place to pick it up cheap.
-
Another wonderful project! :-* :-* :-*
-

Not quite, as Lost Egg says it comes in tubes and tends to be smoother and more sticky than filler. It's available in a number of colours and the basic white caulk can be easily coloured with the addition of any water based paint.
I buy mine from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Everbuild-125BN-330ml-Hour-Caulk/dp/B0012X7VXI/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=brown+caulk&qid=1552687768&s=gateway&sr=8-4 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Everbuild-125BN-330ml-Hour-Caulk/dp/B0012X7VXI/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=brown+caulk&qid=1552687768&s=gateway&sr=8-4)

That's really effective and you could easily replicate whatever type of block or brick you wanted by changing the size of foam piece. Rubble is pretty useful across a wide range of genres so potentially reusable in different settings too.
