This is my Mother of Spiders miniature. The last of a dying race and leader to a Spider Cult. I made her to give some context to my Monstrous Spider miniature. I think a couple of acolytes need to join their gang.

fantastic sculpt - very creepy too.
-
Spider Cult you say?! Very interested given one of my logs focusses around a spider-cult too :) This is a jaw-dropping mini. If you were to sell casts on the market I'd fight to be first in the queue. Awesome work.
-
I love that! And I'd certainly buy one. :-*
-
Thank you all. She is currently in silicone and I’ll run some resin casts tomorrow, then she’s off to be moulded for metal casting.
She’ll be joining my Besrs Head minis range in due course and hopefully ready for Salute.
-
I like that. Glad I found your site the other day, I'll certainly want at least one of her.
-
Nice characer design. I'd buy that mini!
-
I like that a lot. An acolyte would be great too.
-
I agree with Bloggard - very creepy inded.
Well Done :)
-
Super cool and well-executed! Love the design.
-
Potentially useful for adding to her base or customizing the figure itself a bit by tacking on some more crawling friends.

Awesome mini, a must have for me :-*
-
Love the multiple eyes.
-
Thanks again for the comments and interest. I ran some resin casts last night and the mould is heading out today for metal casting. I’m hoping to have her ready for Salute, there will be limited resin copies available in the meantime.

I want that!

Yeah, that's my kinda mini :D.
Nice one, nice idea and a good classic sculpty feel about her. Acolytes are an excellen idea, as would be a couple of her creations ( half-spiders, Frankensteinesque spiders, that sort of thing ).
-
Minging.

A great, novel design!
-
And I had no idea I needed an undead sheep, until I checked out the Bears Head site. lol
-

That is genius. I’m trying yo figure out how they’d work just now 👍

Minging.
Which reminds me. I’ll have some bits to post for painting soon. Including this beaut :D

Great idea, centaur spiders; human torso from the mid section, two human arms on top of the 8 arachnid legs? Don't Reaper have something similar? The heads could be more like the spider mother though?
-
The spider centaurs sound great as experiments that went right.
Then there are the horrible ones who went wrong … Jeff Goldblum mid-transformation stylie - nothing symmetrical.
I used to love the Runequest scorpion men, they were great and saw much service in my (almost always defeated) Warhammer 2nd Edition armies.
-
how about dogspiders? ;) ;D

In RPG terms, they’re called Driders and date back from AD&D 1e
Quote from Wikipedia:
“In the game, they are drow (dark elves) which have been transformed from the waist down so they have the lower body of a spider. The transformation is typically a punishment for offending their goddess, Lolth, or failing one of her tests.”

They're also a well-covered subject already, and making new minis of them is unlikely to sell very well in a market crowded with competition. More original spider hybrids are a fine idea, but more driders? They've been done, I would argue done to death.
How about stealing a page from Chia Mieville and having an otherwise-humanoid body with the head replaced by a spider? As an experiment, maybe the neck's just a stump and the spider's webs run down into the (reanimated, puppeted) body. A spider whose web strands are actually invasive nerve filaments would be suitably creepy. Bit of a head crab vibe from Half Life, but the web idea would add a little twist to it.
Or a zombielike host body stumbling around stuffed full of spider hatchlings. All swollen and bulging, with the decaying flesh barely held together by layers of webbing. Depending on how many of the spiderlings are still inside (assuming they "move out" when they grow up) it might also look like an emaciated corpse or mummy, again wrapped in webs.
Or a werespider, preferably in multiple forms including a partial-transformed version with a humanoid body all twisted and bent with the normal arms and legs all warped into spider limbs - maybe have each limb splitting into two arachnoid legs and the face sprouting fangs and pedipalps and extra eyes.
Even a spider body with a human head would be more unique than a drider, although it's still not very original. Good Japanese mythological critter, though.
-
I'm worried about the people on this site now.
I need to go have a lie down and hope I don't have nightmares.
-

I felt exactly the same way when I stumbled across it the other day. In hindsight, an entire undead farmstead display is just the thing to fill that aching void in my life. :)

Really? It took till now? :)

I'd by that, but I'd be slightly freaked out by it.

That’s what I’d prefer to make. A Frankenstein monster spider man. Unwholesome and gnarly, rather than a neat, balanced hybrid.
It’d have appeal as a chaos mutant too.

I have that. I used it in a scenario of warhammer quest that my son still talks about. I built up a huge scene where a horrible beast was going to emerge from the most. Conjured by the evil necromancer his hero was stalking, BAAAA. A lot of laughter ensued.

I love that. Really made my day. Cheers Beefcake! lol

Any idea when this will be in metal? I still have to use my latest voucher and would like to add her to the cart along (along with the unicorn, bull, monstrous spider, the list is getting long)

Hi Beefcake. She’s with the caster now. Hopefully I’ll get some news on her next week. I’ll report back when I do :)
-
Great news :D
-
Aiming to pick up a Mother of Spiders at Salute. Great mini and the leader of my next Frostgrave Warband.
-
I'll also be grabbing one at some stage. I just want an army of spiders. God knows I have enough.
-
The metal version of my Mother of Spiders mini is now in stock.
Chris Nichols at Macrocosm Miniatures did a terrific job with the casting too.

On the "get" list. Saw your other post, Narthok's going to be available soon too, right?
Mama Many-Eyes there is totally going to be showing up in some custom Ghost Archipelago gaming, as well as terrifying RPG groups for years to come.

I love that she might be a recurring villain in an RPG, that’s very cool.
Yes, I’m casting the sci-fi Narthoks and once the Kickstarter backers are sent theirs, he’ll then start heading to regular store orders. I’m aiming to have the Kickstarter ones completed next week.
-
Very nice. Come the new month I'll be putting that in the cart and getting that other stuff I had the voucher for.
Cheers!

Got my copy today, great sculpting and casting :D
Thanks Phil.

Thanks Phil.
I’m glad you like her. Thanks for ordering one 👍
-
I have my resin copy and have to say this is an amazing miniature! Trying to come up with a scenario for the Monolith Conan game using her and some other minions of the Spider God Zath.
-
I’m so glad your happy with her. I’d be interested to hear what you do with the scenario too :D

I will be sure to link to her ordering info when I post the scenario to the Conan gaming groups - I just backed a battle report app that I should have around the time I actually finish the scenario so I am sure when people see her they will want their own!
-
I had no idea I even needed this mini, but it's all so clear to me now...
I have ordered a metal version. Because apparently I now need a spider themed faction for... I don't know which game yet, but I'll come up with something :D
This mini could even work as a Beastmaster Wyrd for Necromunda I reckon!
-
Apparently, mine was received at my home, but my wife (in)conveniently dropped the small box behind the cabinet in the hallway where the fresh mail is usually placed after it it received. So I only found out about and opened the package yesterday!
The sculpt is awesome and she will paint up really nice, I can already tell.
However, as the anonymous passers-by in Deuce Bigalo exlaimed at several points in the film: 'That's one big b*tch!' lol
Seriously; I was expecting a tiny crone, but she's huge! She could function as a small, withered old (mutated) hag next to 40mm miniatures, but next to 28mm or even 32mm ones, she's a giant.
Not a real issue of course; just not what I was expecting :) . For those wondering, here's a picture of her next to an old Arbites mini:
-
Skull's the giveaway on size.
-
I shall put a size description on her product page.
When I made her I imagined she was the remnant of a forgotten civilisation and would be the main villain in an adventure. So rather than little old lady, I made her ogre sized, she could even be demonic.
I’m hoping to expand the set with some acolytes and hybrid horrors. It occurred to me that female spiders are huge, compared to the males, so the male acolytes can be regular human size.
I hope you post pictures of her painted. I started painting one, but still need to finish it :)
-
...It occurred to me that female spiders are huge, compared to the males...
Good call, that! :)
I'll see about splashing some paint on her in the coming days, but Easter might throw an egg or two in the works... ;)
