Hi all,
Mel the terrain Tutor has just launched his first book on making terrain via Kickstarter. It looks like it's going to be packed full of juicy building techniques so do yourself a favour and check it out.

PS, hope this is an ok place to post, sorry if it's not mods, just thought it's the best board to share some terrain making knowledge.

Looks good.

Coincidentally, I saw this on Youtube just last night.
I like Mel's work, so as far as I'm concerned, 'it's crackin' on time, eh?' :D
-
Mel has made some very good tutorials on his Terrain Tutor YouTube channel.
I will back this.
-
And I am now the 1000th backer of the $45,- pledge... :)

I was on the live show when the KS went live. I love Mel's channel. Will be a great book.
Made it in at the #10 spot

Yes there is some seriously good stuff in his youtube channel hey!, he has a real artistic eye for colour and realism which I really like. He also does so much hard work trialing new materials/practices to get the best result and shares it openly with the community. He's a real asset.
I hope it becomes a hard cover ;)
Cheers
Matt
PS Thanks Mods

Kickstarter is running towards its end and needs one final push to get all of the stretchgoals (more pages) realized.
So any of you you haven't already done so; make sure you pledge, because Mel's work is great and this book will undoubtedly be well worth it!

It's the right place for it

Looking forward to this one. I've built enough terrain that I'm not sure I'll learn masses of new stuff (but there's always new tricks!) but I've really enjoyed Mel's YT videos and a friend and I have gone in together for a pair of books - he figures his kids will get a lot out of their copy!
-
I couldn't quite bring myself to back it. However, being on a terrain kick just now and having watched several of his videos, I was beginning to regret that decision.
Turns out the backerkit is open until the end of September, so if anyone else has non-backer's regret, there's still time - backerkit link (https://terrain-essentials.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders)
I have now backed for the book, as I should have done in the first place ::)
Hopefully I'll still be on a terrain kick in 9 months when it arrives - a bouncing baby hardback :)
-
my goodness, he does a wonderful spiel in the vid. on the page.
wish I was in time / had the funds to back it ... looks like it'll be great.

Will the color chart text be in English instead of the current Latin? :?
Mel certainly is enthusiastic but will it be worth it for a terrain loving 50 years on model railroader already with numerous scenery books on the shelves and plenty of scenery builds? Thinking about it.
I was the first person I'm aware of to carve foam into realistic terrain shapes when the next best thing was Geo-Hex. Probably others before me, likely, since it was early 1980s - though people back then still were using masking tape roads, felt cloths and books for hills. That model railroader in me rebelled at that - so good on Mel if he gets more people on board. Of course, over time, I've come to under stand the playability benefits of "wedding cake" hills.
Turning on the thinkerator.

The book is now out. I received my copy on Wednesday. It is awesome.

Yup, mine turned up this morning :D Still need to do a deep clean on it, but it looks promising.
My only tiny gripe is that the free Mel figure looks to be Primaris/Star Wars Legion size, so I'm not sure I'll be able to use it - which is a shame as the figure itself looks nice.
-
Still waiting in anticipation for my copy to arrive...
Bummer about Mini Mel's size, but then again; he looks to be rather lanky in his vids, so perhaps he can still blend into my crowd of civvies... ;)

Anyone know if the book will go for general purchases?
-
The book will be on sale in January. I think Warlord will have it.

I don’t do KS at all. Never have, never will. But when the book is printed available for sale, I will get it.

Mine arrived this AM to Kentucky, it's looking really good.

My copy arrived a week before Christmas and ended up being wrapped as a present, so I had to wait a bit to start reading it. It was worth the wait! There is a lot of useful information in the book and I’ve learned some new things starting in the first flip-through.
Two things would improve an already excellent book:1. Captions or numbers to tie each photo to the text it is supporting, 2. A detailed index so that it is easier to find specific techniques.
Overall, I am very happy I backed this Kickstarter, the book is useful and beautiful and I expect to have fun with it for years!
-
Much wait.
Such anticipation... ::)

Our copy arrived today. My wife and I are both very pleased with the book and the bonus of a little Mel to add to the painting queue. It has been quite a wait but worth it!

I received my copy yesterday evening, and I'm really amazed by how good the book looks :-*
I haven't had the opportunity to thoroughly read it (just had the time to quickly leaf through it), but I'm looking forward to sitting down with it (and a nice drink) this weekend to really enjoy Mel and Dave's efforts :)
