Title: 3mm extravaganza
Post by: Grumbledook on March 25, 2019, 08:12:39 PM
Well, not quite an extravaganza just yet but, you know, dream big!

I’m back on the 3mm wagon once again after a long time away. I had done a fair chunk of an Alpha Legion army but the big basing started to annoy me a bit, as a result I've decided to start all over again with new bases and a new army.

The first test base:

Some assault infantry and support weapons:

Kind of close-ups:

Knights sworn to the Legio Khodabax:

More to come soon including, tanks, troops, a primarch (no less) robo-men and massive robots. Usual wordy nonsense is reappearing on the blog.

Thanks for looking.

You actually inspired me to join you in 3mm based on smaller round bases instead of in platoon bases.  I love how your Iron Warriors turned out.  And the knights with the ruin/industrial platforms on top!

Great work, love the Titans!! :)

Thanks all.

The smaller bases turned out better than I expected, and it also means I can use a variety of other rules systems quite easily. Also I think it’ll make the units interact with scenery in a more convincing fashion.

The Knights were good fun and I'm looking forward to working on their bigger relatives, also they look so much better next to tiny 3mm figures. A warlord will look properly imposing, I always thought titans looked way too small in epic. In the artwork they always looked colossal!

Can’t decide whether I like the titans more or that brilliant command stand. Really awesome.

Cheers all for the comments, really appreciate it.

What’s that coming over the hill, is it ........ 3 Fellblades-esque super heavy tanks? Yes, yes it is:

and driving through some random out of scale scenery:

They came out much darker in the photos, I always find metallics an utter pain to photograph.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of basing and other time consuming bits, but there will be further reinforcements in due course....... I’ve even found a model to play Perturabo!

Thanks for looking!

Those heavy tanks have come out very well, they look really good. :)

I really like your new basing! I regularly toy with 6mm 'skirmish' were a standard base is 3 infantrymen, and everything else is statted up to reflect it's stats 'in relation' to that base. Works well, i just need to do more!

How tall are those wee fellas - I assume they're 'true scale' like the 6mm ones are (so the 3mm probably stand around 5mm?)

Post by: Grumbledook on April 08, 2019, 12:02:23 AM
@Ockma & jambo1: cheers!

@Jagannath: Thanks! I’m pretty pleased with how they’ve turned out. I’m currently basing my 6mm stuff on single bases because, well, I’ve just managed to finish an actual unit and I quite like the idea of 6mm skirmishes.

The 3mm scale power armoured chaps are about 4mm, if my squint serves me well enough. They are a bit bigger than the regular troops.

Finally, just a few more additions. A pair of the big, Limo class Land Raiders and a trio of Dreadnoughts:

Once again, the art of trying to make metallics not look black in photographs eludes me!

Thanks for looking

Not sure my designs will stretch to being shrunk to 3mm!

Amazing! Who makes 3mm space marines?

Does a certain company that shall go unnamed care about that? From what I’ve seen recently in 15mm, 3mm, etc offerings, it would seem ... not?

Thing is, I don’t have enough vaganza in my life as it is, so I really think it’s a bit unfair that some people have extra....

@Ultravanillasmurf - Thanks!

@Jagannath - Cheers man! I don’t see why some tiny civilian vehicles and silos wouldn’t look fabulous on a titan’s base.

@Khurasan Miniatures - Thanks! There are quite a few very suitable proxies about as you say. Personally I love the tiny scales and these 3mm ones make my Titans look massive. Love your ranges by the way, i’ve Got quite a few in my 15mm Rogue trader paining queue. Quick question, are there going to be any new races for Away Team? The Tahey are brilliant.

@ blacksoilbill - They totally are, aren’t they!

Thanks Grumbledook yes as a matter of fact I’m just now previewing the Terran team on my Facebook. The captain with that perfect hair(piece) is first....

Two more alien races are made as well.

A little touch of threadomancy to bring this back from the dead!

Nearly a year on and, with a little bit of time available, I painted up some more of my 3mm mountain. These chaps are Vangard Novan Regulars but, having slapped on some red paint and a shiny hat, they more than convincingly represent some Martian troops.

I’m phasing out round bases for infantry (keeping them for tanks though) since they are way too fiddly and switching to some rectangular ones with a 40mm frontage.

Here’s a close up so you can hopefully see some of the detain ones these casts:

Anyhow, forgive the revival and thanks for looking!

Great work :)

I love 3mm and 6mm figures but, sadly, I just can't them as well as you and others do.
Title: Re: 3mm extravaganza
Post by: Grumbledook on April 07, 2020, 07:13:42 PM
Cheers guys! These figures are actually quite forgiving, you’d be able to get away with a basic coat and a wash for shading since the casts are actually very crisp.

I tend to go a bit overboard and most of the detail is unnoticeable from a fairly short distance. Just trying to make the most of being able to see stuff at this scale!

One thing I do is base all my figs to one side of the stand. It gives it that GW “bolter firing line look” and makes it easier to see which way is forward.

@Ockman - Good to be back! Very impressed with your continuing 15mm odyssey.

@Jagannath - Cheers, a commander needs to be able to see where their troops are after all! Any more 6mm or smaller experiments in the pipeline? 3mm vehicles would be ace  :D

@Macunaima - I’ve just based some on 40x15mm base, much more straightforward and easier to pick up!

Tanks! These little chaps were a great deal of fun to paint and will be at least tripling in number for a classic video game-esque tank rush.

And an action shot!

More on the way soon, I’m experimenting with the rectangular 40mm frontage basing for the infantry so they are next in the queue.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers! Here are some infantry to support those tanks:

And a detail shot:

Fun to paint as always, the new 40mm frontage makes it much easier than on my previous circular bases. Vehicles will continue to go on round ones though.

The eagle eyed amongst you will have no doubt spotted a new and fully painted piece of scenery! One of Jagannath’s scenic 15mm scale pieces, a perfect silo at this scale.

Thanks for looking and stay safe.

They look great - is that basically an epic base with double the number of infantry on it? When I eventually tackle 3mm I think I'm going to do big bases, each with a platoon.

I'm chuffed to see another piece in the wild - looks cool! That's a really nice blue.

These are lovely, very tidy too! Some of the tanks are so detailed if you didn't tell me they were 3mm I'd suspect 6!

Really tempted to do 3mm Sci Fi and Moderns/Cold War. Scale makes a lot of sense in many ways for big ops but its clear its still early days for 3mm, I haven't seen loads of terrain for instance.
Title: Re: 3mm extravaganza
Post by: Grumbledook on April 16, 2020, 09:24:54 PM
@Jagannath: Thanks! The base had the 40mm frontage but is 15mm deep which gives the figures a bit of room..... and makes it less likely for them to get painted over with basing gunk!

@Brummie: Thank you very much! The vehicle detailing is frankly ridiculous, but great considering that I get bored painting vehicles at 6mm scale and up. For Sci Fi the scenery is not to much of a problem, there is plenty of opportunity for junk modelling and the humble bottle top is surprisingly versatile. I’m also in the process of painting up  some more of Mr Jagannath’s 15mm scenery (blue silo thingy behind the infantry) and a random half space rocket/snoopy spinny thing from a happy meal has potential!
