I've made a small start with my Weird War II Japanese (also, a welcome break after that cartoony crap I've been doing lately  )
An officer in field dress (brigade games), two ninja(s) (perry converted with TAG weapons) and a sumatori (Urban War).
All figures are painted in the colours I intend to use for my regular Japanese ww2 minis, so they blend in more. I'm not going for historical accuracy here (on the historical figs I mean), just for a "if it looks right, it is right" feel, so no need to point out how I got all the colours wrong (I don't care.. ). Skintone is a bit yellowish, which might not be pc in this day and age, but I really wanted a pulpy, comic book feel to them and I like it.
A group shot with the zombie I did a while ago:

Officer (too much light, sorry):

Sumatori:

Looking good. :) Flesh looks spot on to me, I go for a similar look when I paint orientals myself.
-
Nice :) I particularly like the officer.
-
you played the new zombie level on call of duty world at war?? jap zombies and flaming hellhounds! also a nice new weapon! oh the Japanese look great!
-
Genius work !
I realy wish to see more ,please !
Grimm
-
@ majorsmith: Nope, never played the game, my imagination is weird enough on it's own. lol
@ grimm: oh, there will be more, have no fear. ;)
-
The Sumotori --> Is that a Urban War fig?
-
An officer in field dress (brigade games), two ninja(s) (perry converted with TAG weapons) and a sumatori (Urban War).
Yes. Yes, it is. Very suited for Weird War II in my opinion. ;) I've got two more. Lovely models but with some hard to reach places with a brush.
-
some really good idea in this project. I like the paint too
-
Those are great.
-
Those are quite neat...completely different, but would be great in a Pulp Action game set somewhere in the South Pacific on an island occupied by some fanatical Japanese War Lord doing some wierd "scientific research". Thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Hitman

Indeed, they would work well for one of those ww2 Dinosaur island stories à la "the land that time forgot" that DC had a whole series on for a while. :)
-
That officer looks a little chill.
-
by which you mean? :)
-
Looks like he is tripping on some drugs, stoned from some 'grass'. lol
-
who knows? ;)

Looks like he is tripping on some drugs, stoned from some 'grass'. lol
Hope you're not reefering (;)) to a certain Cheech and Chong getting chinese eyed there bud! ;)
-
I love the sumotoris!!! I wanted to buy them hundreds of times, but i've never decided... :P

5 figures in "banzai" charging pose. The officer is from Brigade Games, the other figures are from The Assault Group. I quite enjoyed painting these. Yeah, the officer's katana is a bit crooked, but it's moulded that way. Sorry for the bad pictures.

the one with mustaches is really NOT japanese! :P
watashitachi no naka ni amerika-jin ga arimasuyo!!!! kirimashou!

Well, he was sculpted that way. :)

Hope you're not reefering (;)) to a certain Cheech and Chong getting chinese eyed there bud! ;)
Eh? I fail to understand the expression, but if that be a crack at me I'll have you know I'm not of the province of my residence!
-
the one with mustaches is really NOT japanese! Tongue
You'd wonder what splendid mustaches some japanese have. Not all are beardless.

Another update:
The bugler. One of the TAG limited edition minis that they give away free if you buy a certain number of packs. Excellent as part of a command group or possible *the* figure for your snipers to take out first in a raid scenario to prevent him from giving the alarm.
The second of my Weird War II sumatori figures. Model from Urban Mammoth. I love the way they look. This one was also much easier to paint than the other one. Fewer hard to reach places.
The third of my converted Perry Miniatures ninja's. This one only had a holster added to his hip, but he's my favorite of the lot. I just love the colours on this one and I think it's the best colour scheme of the three so far.
A group shot with the other three Weird War II ninja conversions:
And an intermediary group shot of all the painted figures so far. Miniatures are by Urban Mammoth (the sumatori), TAG (the charging infantry, bugler and converted zombie), Brigade Games (the two officers) and Perry Miniatures (the converted ninjas). The background scenery items are two aquarium decoration pieces.

I just broke down and bought some TAG Gurkhas with Thompson and Sten-Guns, and a pack of Chindits with Thompsons. I'll eventually need to get some oppostion for them, and this is giving me a whole new wealth of ideas.
I might be easier to sell my potential opponents on this period if I can infuse a bit of weirdness into it.
Love what you're doing!
-
The TAG Pacific War figures are really nice, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Maybe you need to look in your superfigs range for some suitable figures to go with them. ;)
-
We might have a thing or two. I think the Yeti Agent might be a bit hot in the South Pacific. but perhaps one of the super-apes? not sure, but I can't wait to get my Gurkhas!
Are your Japanese all Brigade games?
-
Only the two officers are Brigade Games. Infantry and bugler are TAG. Sumatori are Urban Mammoth. Ninjas are Perry conversions. Zombie is a TAG conversion.

What a great thread- those minis are amazing!
Folks who are interested in WWW2 Japan keep an eye on the Grindhouse Games and Secrets of the Third Reich sites and forums. We will be publishing a supplement this fall rounding out the US, German, British and Soviet OOB's with more weirdness, but next year will bring a second supplement devoted entirely to the Pacific theatre and the Japanese Imperial Army. All the Unit 731 super science, Meka-Bushi heavy metal and Shugendo weirdness you can handle. The units themselves are already in internal playtesting and we'll be letting out details and goodies as development continues.
Meantime- keep posting those minis! Love 'em!

John, any love for the Gurkhas in this supplement? Please say yes!

Already am doing that. Looking forward to adding even more weirdness to the force!

Will do, got three more on the painting table, one of which is made entirely from West Wind bits (and a little greenstuff).

Gurkhas do seem to have quite the devoted following! :)

You need read no further than this for the reason why:

Those accounts are nothing short of astonishing. And they are repeated in every theater in which they have fought.

These men do indeed deserve remembrance.

all those are really good (also the moustache jap), i love the style and the piantjob!!!!
just one concern: why did you use different kind of shapes of bases for the sumotoris? I know that they are sold with this kind of base, but... it sound a bit strange.... btw I love the appearance of both bases!!!
-
The main (and only) reason is that I didn't have any suitable GW-style bases of the right size and that I figured it's not much of a problem since they're all round bases of the same height and they are textured and painted the same way.
-

The whole forgotten army needs suitable reference John, hence my suggestions in the war in the pacific thread on SoTR. Have a huge soft spot for the Burma campaign: My grandfather was royal artillery, communications, he was the part of the first team to lay phonelines across the Irawadi in Burma and maintained the lines between the command teams and the fire teams....
Anyway can't wait to see what's in store.

Another small update:
A WW2 Japanese Samurai Hero. The concept is that of a Japanese golden age superhero, who upholds the old traditions and is a symbol of the greatness of the Japanese Empire. The figure is a conversion based on a West Wind samurai body, with a reworked head from the West Wind SOTR range (german fieldcap gasmask head). I think the faceplate type gasmask-look works well for Japan and with a bit of filing and puttying, the German fieldcap is quickly transformed into a Japanese one. A few more greenstuff details were included to add a few more modern touches: the leather straps instead of ropes/thread for the shoulderarmour and the pistol holster. He is painted in the same colourscheme as the rest of the force.

And two TAG snipers.

Three more figures done:
Officer. Another fine figure from the TAG stable. A sunhelmet, glasses, high boots, a katana and a pistol. What's not to like?
Flamethrowers. Two TAG figures doing exactly what it says on the tin (no actual flames included).

Some more fabulous figures. That Samurai is brilliant :D :D :D The face mask reminds me a bit of Shredder from the Turtles lol

Hmmm. Maybe that's why I always found those heads looked more Japanese than German. ::)

Four figures from TAG, with antitank (or antimech?) weapons:

Your Weird Japanese look really good. Some of the best painted Japanese I have seen.
Cheers

4 more charging figures, this time from Brigade Games. The flagpole is a Gripping Beast spear and the flag itself is made from thick aluminium foil and hand painted. It was late when I started on it and I was a bit distracted... The result is that I painted the flag in the correct direction on both sides, instead of mirroring it. Oh well, can't be bothered to repaint that.

Mighty cool! Please keep adding on, this is true eye candy ;D

Thank you.
And before anyone says anything about it, yes the bent bayonet has been straightened out since the pictures. ;)

I hope so, otherwise he'll be shooting the moon instead of Americans.

Bent bayonet? Why not, this is "Weird Japan"

Brilliant project.

Nice minis but shouldn't there be an anchor instead of a star on those hats and helmets with that flag?

D'oh! You're right, for Imperial army, the sundisc should have been in the centre of the flag.
Oh well, I still can't be bothered to do it again. lol

ace stuff!

You're fine, actually. Both the IJA and the IJN used that flag. The belief that only the Navy used the "ray" flag is a myth, probably started by wargamers. Plenty of evidence for both with both branches.
Now, the anchor, sure, that's a Navy thing.
Hope that helps.

Two rather extensive conversions of the 1/35 "fireball" Mak. This is the flying, rocketpack version and everything that wasn't needed was stripped from the models and holes were filled with greenstuff and useful bits and bobs (some old pression buttons were recycled).
I decided to give this version flamethrowers (which allowed me to make use of the fueltanks for the rocketpack), using some leftover plastic bits from a GW catachan sentinel sprue. Some tubes were added to connect it to the fuel tanks. Since the long, humanlike arms didn't work for me after this conversion, the other arm was modified to, one receiving a chainsaw (useful in the jungle, no dount) from the same sentinel sprue and the other a circular saw from a clicky mechwarrior mini (these are a great source for alternative weapon arms for your MaK's btw).

Nice!
This whole project is great - not just because it's brilliant to see something other than U.S./German/Russian Weird War stuff (and I have nothing against any of that! It's just nice to see something different), but because the painting and modelling are great, and it's clear that a lot of thought has gone into the project.
Excellent mekas, by the way! I love the Rising Sun on the lid/door!
-
Sugoi-des!
Really excellent reinterpretation of Ma.K. From one Japan to another (real/imagined present/past authentic/interpreted), as it were.
-
Great conversions :-* :-*
Brilliant paint job. :-*
The whole army is stunning :o
Keep up the good work.
-
Thanks guys!
Your kind comments help motivate me to go on. 8)
-
the maks look great! i have a similar version using the sentinal chainsaw but on a melusine, gotta say im loving your japanese stuff!
-
If only I had clued into the sale at HLJP before the SAFS were sold-out :'(
-
This project now officially rates three kinds of awesome. 8)
-
AFter seeing your ninjas, I thought it would be great to have some "hidden ninja markers", bases with no model on to use for surprise deployment....
-
Interesting idea. How would you use them?
-
What an incredible project. Totally brilliant.
I have a Space Samurai project waiting in the wings and this stuff has really got me thinking.
Fantastic!
-
Wow they are fantastic :D :D :D
This project gets better & better :D :D

Something a bit more down to earth. A type 92 MG with crew for some support, all by TAG.

-
nice! can see myself getting a few Japanese
-
I love the TAG Japanese, they really ooze the right kind of flavour. ;)
-
Another conversion of the fireball MaK. This one had a field "roof" added and had the rockets removed (didn't need them). An MG was added (as was a chainsaw). Pilot head is from TAG (used to be on the zombie's body).

Hey White Knight
Well done on taking on a very unique subject!
Very very cool stuff! :)

-
Another excellent model - great conversion, and really nice weathering as well.
Any chance of a group shot of the whole force - it must really be coming together at this point!
-
Thanks for the encouraging comments!
Group shot, maybe, IF the day clear's up (very dark and grey atm), otherwise it'll be for next week.
-
very cool! you've been very busy!!
-
I had some time off work (and other responsabilities). Sadly, that's over now. :(
-
A few more figures painted.
An officer firing a pistol (TAG):
The execution of a deserter:
The executioner is a TAG figure and will of course do double service as a katana wielding character.
The deserter is a Copplestone BoB Chinese figure and can double as a prisoner that needs to be freed (or killed before he can spill the beans)
-
Really nice mate as ever.
Though I think they need a main fortification or bunker or something similar?
;)
-
You have some seriously nice toys there!!!! 8) :-*
You've got a really good eye for conversions and they blend together brilliantly.
Those Ma.k's seem to fit into a variety of genres.
Excellent work.

Excellent work! Nice smooth paint-job, great consistency in tones, basing, and overall look throughtout, plus, they're just cool!
I had been looking forward to a new installment!
-
White Knight, your stuff continues to look amazing.

Thanks for the comments. 8)

Right back at you. ;)

Some wheels for my Japanese. The car is 1/48 type 95 small sedan 'kurogane 4wd", made by Hasegawa. The crew are the ones that came with the kit, but with head- and weaponswap (TAG) to make them fit in. I'm glad it's done, it was a fiddly bit of kit and I left several parts out that weren't needed here.

Really cool car! Was it so fiddly that you would not recommend me to buy it?
-
That car is fantastic. That may be one of the my favorites of your work so far.
-
tamiya make that car as well, i like it!
-
Really cool car! Was it so fiddly that you would not recommend me to buy it?
Not to that point, though since this came out, tamiya has one too, so you might want to look up a review of that one to see if it might be more straightforward.

I've been looking at that car, thinking it would be fun for Quar or ECW. I'm glad to see that those 28mm heads fit so well on the bodies, making it a convincing 28mm car. Nice work.
-
Excellent car! The colour scheme and weathering are spot on, and the crew look great - TAG head and weapon swaps you say? Very nicely done. The gun through the window is very cool!
It's always great to see a new installment for this project!

Lovely model :-*
Very good paint job.
Keep up the good work

love the little car, i especialy like the open windscreen with the mg poking through :-* :-*

A little piece of jungle scenery I made using a cheap toy planekit, a plastic bonsai tree and lots of aquarium plants. I learned a lot from this, mistakes were made (for instance, I've left the foamboard base too thich around the edges) and the next one will be better (I hope).
The plane is actually 1/72 but it looks big enough to be a one-man prototype. It got wrecked somewhat and a Wargames Factory plastic zombiehead was added for the deceased pilot. The tree is a cheap multipart plastic aquarium scenery item. I glued it together (some variation is possible in attaching the branches), puttied the joins and painted it to get rid of the shiny plastic look. This can serve as a decorative terrain piece or as an objective (crashed plane in enemy territory, important intelligence info on board, need to retrieve it before the enemy finds it, that sort of thing).

Oh no, the Japanese found it first! :'(

As you can see, it's hard to make out the plane from above.

Looks great White Knight.
-
White Knight - in your weird wwii universe, did the USAF get split off from the US Army (where in the real world, it existed as the US Army Air Force from 1941-1947, at which point it was split off, and became the US Air Force)
-
Yes, I know about that issue. Now, I more or less put this force in the SOTR universe, where the year is 1949, so the split could have happened there.
But the truth is, the letters were on the original plane (which is atually a 1951 design, but I figured a one-man prototype could exist two years earlier) and when I repainted it to match my colourscheme, I left them. lol

How dare you be alternatively historically ambigiously inaccurate young man!
Next you'll be telling me that there are zombies and vampires in this 'world' of yours....
oh...... :D

More support for the grunts: a TAG mortar team
(http://wk.frothersunite.com/misc/pics/Japan_mortar.jpg)
-
As I said in the other place:
Nice, though you could have added the obligatory mexican moustache onto 'old hear no evil' in the middle you know!
Still applies! :D
So what's next after the next vehicle then? Gonna get that plane done?
The Commander
-
I wouldn't know. Some more grunts might slip in before the vehicle too, because I haven't got that many painted yet.
-
And I'm not quite getting your reference with the moustache... ???
-
Very nice stuff. :-* :-*
Must be a fair size of army now?
Have you got an opponent or are you going to be building the opposition as well?
-
Well, the Americans I need to complete some day will double as opposition for them and I'm planning a small force of Chinese to ally with the Americans against the Japanese.
-
Excellent mortar team - the consistency between the models in this force is great, and not something that's easy to do with models from different ranges, various conversions, and of course painting models at different times. Great job.
Love the terrain piece as well - it will get lots of use! I know you thought the base was an issue - as an alternative 6mm MDF is great for basing terrain, as it won't warp (usually...), it's strong (so the terrain can take some punishment), and it's only 6mm thick (that's sort of given away in the name, but it's important nonetheless). Only problem - you need a jigsaw or a circular saw to cut it, and you need to do it outdoors. Avoid breathing in the dust when you cut MDF, as it's simply not good for you.
Looking forward to more - and to your Americans!
-
Thanks! The base is also due to bad planning. I could have made it thinner if I'd wanted. Though as it is, the foam base allowed me to use short nails (or shortened) to push through the hole in the base of the aquarium plants directly into the foam (strengthened with glue) which means they won't come out quickly. What I should have thought to do is tapering (?) the edges much more so it doesn't appear as tick.
-
And I'm not quite getting your reference with the moustache... ???
Just that in true sesame street style, 'one of those kids is doing his own thing...' (ie no tache!)
:D
-
I hadn't thought about the fact that the thicker base allows you to anchor the plants more firmly to the piece of terrain - it's a good point. In fact, I'll have to keep it in mind for my own scenery! I tend to just glue things to the top, and then texture around everything, but sometimes things do pop loose. In fact, the older I get, the more it happens!
As for bevelling the base (I think 'bevel' is the word, but I could be wrong...) - that's the solution, of course. In any case, it's a great looking piece of terrain.
So what's next?
-
So what's next?
Could be anything. :)
-
Could be anything. :)
Yup it'll be PLANE to see!
:D
(Oh 1000th post!!!!)
The Commander

Absoloutley Awesome!!
-
Wow!
Thanks for for showing me what to use my Urban War figs for!
Damn this is nice. :D
Do you play games with them as well? I've bought the AE-WWII rules set,... but you seem to be into more models at a time?
-
Oh my ! Congratulations for your originality ! :)
-
I have the AE-WW2 rules, but not the supplement that includes Japanese (yet). I also have the SOTR rules and they were intended mainly for use with those, though I haven't gotten any games in. :'(
I should really add more to the force, but I can't do everything at once. As for the number of models, having more also means that you can pick the ones you want for a particular smaller game.
-
That scenery is quite ace. That reminds much of the downed plane you can find in Fallout 3 in Point Lookout hidden out in the swamps. Had only ran into the thing just yesterday, in fact.
-
So, where can plastic bonsais be had??

The Japanese list can be found here:

Apparently it's only a playtest version though.

I got the plastic tree off ebay (they are meant for aquarium decoration). It's this one:

The other scenery in this thread is from Europet Bernina, they do some great, ready to use jungle trees of various types too.

Can they be bought online, or do you have to find a store?
I have seen their catalogue, and they DO have a lot of interestng things....
-
I don't know, I'm lucky enough to have found them in petstores, which helps to judge the scale. They have contact details on their website though, so it can't hurt to drop them a line to find out about availability. Personally, I think an online wargaming shop should approach them to stock their appropriately scaled stuff for wargamers. It's a whole new market for them really.
-
Very nice
-
That's a great army you have there. I'm glad this post got ressurected or I'd probably never have seen it!
-
That's some great conversion work and imagination put into a project! :-* :-* 8) 8)
