Empress has just released a new range of figures for the Tet Offensive 1968, specifically Hue.
If you are reading this in April 2019, you may ask why I mention it. Well, it has taken me two weeks to paint two figures (and a building), so this thread will return occasionally and readers will wonder what the fuss is about (say in 2031 when I finally finish the last of the "current" releases ^___^).
First two figures from NAM-1.

I did have some minor issues with mould lines.
Now another six USMC and five VM to base and paint.
-
Nicely painted.
My guys are in the paint line.
I have to get some pirates painted for a convention in May.
Then the Few, the Proud, the Marines. ;D
-
Group shot.

They look the part, good job. Now paint some more I can't wait until 2031..!
-
Nice one UVS.
-
Thanks.

Next in the paint queue from Empress are a pack of Viet Minh.
-
All of them.

I do need to have a look at some skin highlights and paint the doll figure.
-
nice
-
Nice.
I was debating with myself whether the guy pointing was black or white*. He was really the only one where I had my doubts. Now that I see you went with black I might have to change my guy to that as well.
*Sorry for the lack of pc but for clarity it was easier.
-
Very nice work! :-*

So another Colonial period building for Hue etc.

Two more are at various stages of assembly.

Very nice :-* :-* :-*
Is it a kit or scratch built?

That’s a very nice building 8)

Thanks.
It is a Sarissa N110 Destroyed Small House from their Colonial/North Africa range (the front sheet for the N109 says the Tobruk range).
https://sarissa-precision.com/products/smallhouse-destroyed-28mm?_pos=1&_sid=3b45f16aa&_ss=r (https://sarissa-precision.com/products/smallhouse-destroyed-28mm?_pos=1&_sid=3b45f16aa&_ss=r)
There are component shots here:
https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2019/10/more-buildings-for-vietnam.html (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2019/10/more-buildings-for-vietnam.html)
It is similar to, but, strangely, not identical to the N109 building earlier in the thread.
I have another N109 and the three bay N117 under construction.
The nearest I am going to get to scratch building is when I get another N109 and put a roller shutter door on it to make a shop ^___^.
-
Air-con unit is a nice touch. Whole model looks great.
-
This is the second Sarissa N109 Colonial Small House for use either in Vietnam or Roanupur.
To differentiate this building from the other one, it has been fitted with a Crooked Dice air-conditioner.

At SELWG I ordered another one. This one is going to be converted into a shop.
-
Cool, the buildings are effective.
-
Like Ash says, the air on makes all the difference. Nice.
-
Thanks.
-
Well done using Sarissa buildings.
I have be eyeing Sarissa's buildings for Vietnam also.
They would make excellent buildings for parts of Hue.
-
I'm working my way through the Empress USMC and they are beautiful little figures and you've done them proud. I just have one question? What is the thing on the back of the marines helmet in the first picture. I really can't work out what it is.

I think (based on peering at my photograph) it is a troll doll (and not an Infinity Stone).
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_doll (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_doll)
A quick trawl through Google Images did bring up a M60 gunner with a knitted doll.
It does need revisiting (I could not work it out at the time).
-
Its a doll ;)
-
Thanks for that, I really couldn't work it out. I've seen the helmet with the plastic bull tooked under the helmet band but not the troll
-
Its a doll ;)
Ah, that is the doll I saw earlier in another M60 gunner photograph.
-
Detail photographs (I wish I could see that well).

I need to redo the helmet band.
-
That is so cool!

At SELWG I bought the Empress Cadillac Gage Commando armoured car/wheeled armoured personnel carrier.
Originally issued to ARVN forces, they were also issued to US Army Military Police and US Airforce.
The model was painted with Humbrol 155 Olive Drab spray. The windows were painted with Vallejo Night Blue, highlighted with Citadel Caledor Blue.
I used two sets of Rubicon DCUA007 Willys MB decals (for the Military Police labels) and theoretically one Rubicon DCUS002 M4 Tank decal sheet
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P2JQarLND4I/XcnaLvNoSCI/AAAAAAAAF40/R5EzN-oTwocqUurKhmeB8ZcW9rfi3TDNACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/v100-3.png)
The US recognition stars in front of the side doors use the Rubicon 8mm decals, the ones on the rear half of the upper hull are the 5mm ones - all from the DCUS002 sheet.
I added a jerry can from the Empress stowage set. A shovel from the same set together with a piece of plastic rod make up the pioneer tools on the rear of the vehicle.
A US Military Police XM706 provides fire support and cover for US Marines on the streets of Vietnam.

nice

Great work on the Commando!
-
Excellent job :-*
-
So, I needed an officer to lead my US Marines.
I chose the Captain Christmas figure from the Empress NAM-12 pack, but painted up as a generic officer rather than the historical (and still living) person.
The uniform is painted a slightly darker green than the marines, and the webbing is the later nylon green.

nice indeed :-*

Looking good ;)

The M79 40mm grenade launcher looks like a large calibre shotgun. They provided close support to the rifle armed US Marines.
This example has not been careful with the application of sun cream and is looking a little burned.

This statue base is by Blotz (but is really for Tales of the City, but I do not have any suitable figures for it painted).
Three US Marines shelter while returning fire.

Some more industrial style terrain for Vietnam.

-
Nice work
-
Very nice indeed, one thing though , give the palm leaves a wash to tone the green down a bit.
-
Thanks.
I hand varnished the trunk before applying a Citadel Agrax Earthshade wash, I am waiting for some better weather so I can spray varnish the fronds and then use one of the green shade washes.
I have two bags of them to varnish, wash and base.
-
That will make a big difference!
-
It has been a while.
What with one thing and the other, there has not been a great deal of enthusiasm in general, but the recent order for the Centurion, PT-76 and Otter from Empress has prompted me to build something.
There is a feed gate on the bow/nose of the vehicle that is difficult to remove. I might go for some covering stowage if I can think of something suitable.
I could find little information on the decoration of the vehicle, so I used the USMC in-line numbers off two Rubicon Jeep decal sheets. In line on the nose, and one from a second sheet cut and stacked on the rear of the hull.
I assembled the hull first (without the propellor, it projects below the hull) then primed it and the tracks with (the last of my) Citadel Chaos black, then sprayed the hull with Humbrol 155 Olive Drab. US Marine vehicles are not that colour, but I did not have anything else available. The wheel hubs were then painted with Humbrol 155 Olive Drab acrylic.
The rolled tarpaulin on the roof in front of the roof hatch is really there to reinforce the ring mount, though if I build another, I will add some additional stowage behind the hatch.
-
Nicely done!
-
Excellent job.
I love the Otter. Its a mix of cute, ugly and weird. :)
-
well done !
-
Thanks guys.

Well that gives it away a bit...
-
It has been a while since I last finished anything for Vietnam (June 2020!).
Looking at the new VC figures and playing around with Zona Alfa as a possible Vietnam Solo engine has prompted me to finally base all my current NVA figures.
Currently in Snot Womble Green undercoat.
They now have somewhere to live (having shuffled a number of figures around) - a two tray Figures In Comfort box.
The bottom two rows contain Empress Viet Minh - in a slightly more advanced state of painting.
The USMC are on the other tray.
Still plenty to do, but I think there are enough painted USMC for a Zona Alfa style game.
-
I am working on a solo game using the Zona Alfa rules and the Empress Vietnam (and French Indochina) figures. The Point Of Interest system (ask Dentatus nicely) provides objectives and a degree of randomness suitable for Solo or cooperative play. The cards for Zona Alfa are fine for a post-apocalyptic environment, but lack the flavour of the Vietnam War setting.
Most of my cards are just "re-skins" of existing cards, but one of the scenes from Full Metal Jacket that stuck in my mind was the sniper. So there had to be a sniper figure (I will need a few more later).
Currently Empress do not do any sniper figures for NVA or VC, so I looked through the figures I had and selected the NVA kneeling figure with an SKS carbine. Now a carbine firing an intermediate cartridge is not really the right sort of weapon for a sniper, but needs must...
To make the sniper obvious, he needed a 'scope. The Anvil Industries Phase Rifle sprue used to come with a 'scope (now you would have to buy the weapon accessories sprue), so that was added to the SKS after removing the rear sight.

Nice!

Clever stuff :-*
-
Thanks.
I do need to get a new daylight source as he did not look quite so pink under the lights.
-
So finally something "new" for my Vietnam project. I say new as it has been over four months since my last post on this thread.
The Empress M422 Mighty Mite light vehicle.
I reinforced the front windscreen (because I am clumsy) with a Greenstuff tarpaulin, and a bedroll reinforces the rear door (see previous comment).
Rubicon Jeep kits provided the decals (incorrect numbers).
And I broke one of the USMC parts and the substitute is different.
Someone has not cleaned the inside recently.

Slightly too enthusiastic with the Army Painter Dark Tone and Humbrol weathering powders.
-
Excellent. I love the Mighty Mite. :-*

I like the inside, looks suitably used.

Thanks.
Hopefully I can get the M151 started soon.

Thanks.
Hopefully I can get the M151 started soon.
If it’s not the battery, try the distributor cap. If all else fails give the AA a call. :)

If all else fails give the AA a call. :)
Sophie> Good morning AA Customer Services, how may I help you?
William> Hi, I am trying to start an M151 Ford Mutt.
Sophie> Okay, What model is it?
William> I am not sure I will have to check with Carlos.
Sophie> It might be the battery, can you open the bonnet?
William> Not really, as it appears to be a one piece moulding...

And if anyone wants to see the bits, there is a contents photograph here: https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2021/08/empress-m151-ford-mutt.html (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2021/08/empress-m151-ford-mutt.html)
I have added a spade from the Empress Vietnam Stowage set. I have yet to decide on what to do about stowage.

lol lol lol
My work once had a roadside repair deal with the manufacturers of our fleet and we were required to use it for the first couple of years with the new fleet. One day I broke down and called them. They put me through to the RACV who in turn rang a private contractor who…….eventually showed up. Very efficient system, especially considering we had RACV membership anyway. ::)
-
Getting the title to fit was an effort (it originally said "An Army I do not need for a War I am not interested in", and yes that is still grammatically incorrect).

The two ARVN pack, the ARVN crew pack and to give them some wheels (another) XM706.
This one might have visible crew (one of the M60 gunners is going to be using the rear hatch and gun ring and the shorter crewman in the turret).

Is it any good?
Just finished the 1972 ARVN release and was a bit meh!!! about it :(
-
I received the Hue book on Saturday.
Initial impression is that it is one of the better Osprey Campaign Books.

Thanks for that. May have to get one ;)
-
ordered one . Will write a review when I found time reading the book
-
Is it any good?
I found it informative (but it is not my general area of interest).
It certainly adds to the information in the Tet Offensive book I bought back in 1990.
The new book does lack the war-games table type pictures (like the one on the cover of the Tet book).
-
Yeah I like those images. They explain things well and usually look good. :)
-
It has been a while.
Not helped by mislaying the headlight clusters for more than seven months (who would have imagined finding the remaining white metal and resin components in a ziplock bag boldly labelled "Patton"?).
There is a small hole on the searchlight to fill and plenty of soft stowage to add.

Well done!

Nice work! I like what you’ve done there. It’s a fun kit to work on. Might want to add the pipe for the crew heater over the right fender, although I think it might have been deleted on some tanks in Vietnam. They certainly weren’t using the heater itself.
Just don’t be daft and hack away, adding suspension dampener arms on the running gear like I did. Nobody will bloody notice anyway, save for the silly sod who carved away resin and buggered about with various sizes of plastic rod. lol
-
nbice piece of kit
-
Just came across this thread, great stuff as usual mate. Clever idea with using Zona Alfa for a solo Vietnam game. Any more info on that?
-
Looking good. :-*
Are you adding the tank tracks to the turret sides?
-
It's a very nice model, looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
-
Thanks.
Carlos, your post on detailing the M48 kit was on my screen while I was working on this.
I had added the heater pipe (okay it only reaches the edge of the trackguard as I had added the "ammo" boxes beforehand). It was not clear on the previous picture (and not much clearer here - for extra fun I added two because I had looked at a plan of an A1, then removed the second one)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggYP88xC4rBebW0mTiEdedSoDHSzFfTgCOGfBg1jE8sFNqEDCf5ux_nda5TAlHcLBZv3lS0K1Y22WHby-4SD63Nmj-GluQP018X1Lz9Sg418Gdhkqyi9AVsYe8bfqboEw_DpfFBRaHkHW3PNdBtOTqPQbJJgWerFkRdMbuCQfnzEpsUTptegIFEzFgjA/s500/m48a3-1-14.png)
I also made up a gun cradle.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiA0Lxms0RWq3Dg3_GWosenmg2HQfffrQPXeZbfO_ejZtocQpQVHVYTcDOHWVJF4T6mtyWxQnaDPNQKrR7jOOEYv3nCiUAXfOO8Kp-_K98NxGcA6m8ggrSKvmLjt33oAsF05tLx4oiIB-8smRbAlEroUPlMfnTddPNfGCSz0DwQK9Qn2_ehyRycoj8cw/s500/m48a3-1-16.png)
Paul, I keep looking at the track, not sure if I can get them on the side as my handrails are a bit low.
Should they be tread side out or inside out?
First two new pieces of soft stowage added.
-
From what Vietnam tankers told me, it was easier hanging them with the center guides facing outwards. But they did it both ways.
-
Looking better and better!
Yeah, they swapped the crew heater to the other side between the A1 versions and those that followed, the exhaust hung over the left track guard on the A1 and it was a twin pipe.
That said, some A2 versions seem to have kept the left side position, albeit with one pipe.
All kinds of little detail changes in the early models. I bought the Corgi M48 prior to getting the Empress one. It purports to be an A3, which it is for the most part but you need to cut off the track tensioning wheels at the rear if you want an accurate A3. All very tank nerdy, I know. lol

Hmm. I just got one of those Corgi M48s to support my Vietnam US Army platoon. I haven't yet given it a thorough once over, but now I will. I'll do the requisite surgery if needed...
Also, on a semi-related note, we hanged (hung?) spare track blocks and spare road wheels on the bustle racks on our M1s. And we did the track blocks center guides facing out...
-
Oddly enough, not all of those Corgis have the track tensioning wheel, so there must have been at least two runs of that model and possibly some expensive re-tooling. I bought the one marked as Eve of Destruction and it had the track tensioner. They were all supposedly removed during the upgrade to A3 but who knows, maybe there was one out there with the wheel.
-
Thanks.

First two new pieces of soft stowage added.
They should fit easily and you can always cut sections off them
-
Yup. My Corgi US Army M48A3 does not have the rear tensioner wheels. No surgery required!
But I would like some spare track blocks and road wheel to adorn it with. Boxes, jerry cans, crates, etc. I already have. So, Paul, here's a question: Can one get a set of just the M48 spare stuff? Please. Pretty please... 8)

e mail me on mail@empressminiatures.com and we will see what we can do ;)

Roger, wilco... ;)

A clearer photograph of the heating exhaust (and where the second pipe went, and needs filling).

This is my problem with the track blocks.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJxAul760UzZXLxw2yL1oVidMS47i9IJgTfR8dDRqSeFwqcEbN5AG4Sx0xf02hQKdOWjcUs0yMxVtXX4O-nIfBUCUikZ6kG4QKWDXYgFXUOyxCMmKoY_RK-gJnFexA4s2YDSzJnidCYkLOQaHqVS6kvvUlMb4F2kfFpbvryHaPs3mdsypmA0PW5zwhIw/s500/m48a3-1-20.png)
I might have drilled the holes for the handrail a bit low.
The left hand side is not an issue (guess which direction the model sits on my desk).
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh22--9w7KB-oUvwA_qTjShYDL2PY6fUaeHjNn_OQs-rX-HbN7_2lrmheWd4LAtY-H13yp2jj8KZAjoqJq4Az_SIzPOI3j9pDAXeVaJEOGTlqygX5YVHIvtlsA0lj5KVJHvpcITUmzU5AB2GC4HHnxSZMxwx5jBVLW_vuVPwQoGVMK8O523oB063CaAMQ/s500/m48a3-1-24.png)
-
The track sits mid way up onto the handrail so you look to have lots of room to spare ;)
-
So, slow progress here (but more than on any of my other projects).

Definitely getting there. That’s looking good.
Don’t worry about the pace, it’s probably been quicker than my Mondrian Chieftain, which is just about finished…..
-
:-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Looking good, great stowage, like the Teddy bear and the webbing.
-
Missed the teddy bear. That’s bril!
-
I missed the teddy. :-*
-
I did too. But it's brilliant!
-
Thanks.
Just got to add some straps to the jerry cans, smooth off the replacement rear mudguard and add some soft stowage.and it will be ready for painting.
