Title: ACW Rebels and Patriots 28mm
Post by: flatpack on April 26, 2019, 06:55:51 AM
Morning all.
New period, and new rules for us.
We’ve enjoyed the other Osprey rules in this series (especially TMWWBK), so this Sunday we will be battling away in my shed, over the rolling American countryside.
We’ve all been frantically painting figures, and rumour has it even JC has painted some figures for the game (GULP)

Here’s some eye candy of the figures and terrain we’ll be using.

Should be fun.
I’ll post the AAR as soon as possible after the game.

Looking forward to Sunday. Vodkafan & I played R&P this morning.
Took my AWI stuff off the shelves, dusted them down.
Managed to play the same scenario (home made) twice.
We both had a good time. Photos when Vodkafan gets the a chance to upload them.

Played these rules a lot and I haven't had a bad game yet  :)
Great looking table 👍

Well done.

The calm before the storm.
Table laid out for tomorrow’s battle.

New barn has come out ok. It’s been sat half finished for a couple of years. It’s from Warbases, but with coffee stirrers and cardboard roof tiles added. Also realised it came with no doors. Decided it was no good having a barn without a barn door. Let’s see if anyone can hit it during tomorrow’s game ?  lol lol

And beautiful table setups!
Who wouldn't like to play on that table! Cheers!

Very nice looking set up 👍👍👍

We are hoping for a multiplayer (six players!) game.
Each player will have a 24pt force, though (as in real life)
they will vary quite a bit.
My 3 previous games of Reb.&Pat. (all with Vodkafan) have enthused
me to paint up more ACW from my lead pile than in the previous 20 years!
Admittedly only about 50, but I am down to having just enough left in the
lead mountain to do two 6 figure cavalry units, one Yank & one Reb.
Now if I could do the same with all the other 'projects'.

Really like the barn and the river terrain tiles! Unfortunately something has come up and I won't make it tomorrow  :(
Hope you have a great game lads, I feel sure you will enjoy these rules.

Good luck to your project!
Eagerly waiting to read your AARs! Cheers!
Title: Re: ACW Rebels and Patriots 28mm
Post by: flatpack on April 28, 2019, 09:31:39 PM
So this mornings we played out my first game of Rebels and Patriots.
JC and myself commanded the confederate forces entering the table from the left, through the fields and the town.
Garry and Ian commanded the smaller Union force, entering from the right of the table.

Confederate cavalry commanded by JC, mass on the confederate left flack.
(https://i.postimg.cc/nr2XGPBP/F8364-EB0-D3-DE-45-F4-A33-F-E4-C9-C5492-DEF.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/zHLDJpdC)

Confederate infantry commanded by me, storm through the town on the confederate right flank.
(https://i.postimg.cc/yYKhXq4v/41-F02606-58-DC-4-CE6-BA34-AE583-AE63-D62.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Bth14VvK)

Union forces opposing our confederates.
Garry’s union infantry and artillery on the Union right, opposing JC’s cavalry.
(https://i.postimg.cc/qRCcQ4vZ/1-D8-CFFBE-BEAF-4-C58-88-C5-9-A1-BFEAD5011.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/k6qtgr8x)
Important note here, see the bridge in front of them ? Well that’s the bridge that JC and myself are supposed to be defending, but it’s on the other side of the battlefield, hello, how does that happen ?

On the Union left flank, Ian places his cavalry and his dismounted “Fife’s Rangers”. They slowly advance on the town.
(https://i.postimg.cc/htfXVMj2/44092441-142-B-4-AAE-A172-BB88-E009-C471.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/RWxCB7wt)

So we have to cross the table to take the bridge, that’s already in the Union zone of control. How do you do this, well just advance.
(https://i.postimg.cc/Y2YfWrVv/4-D6707-DD-6501-4787-84-DA-113-B31329-BB2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/7bP2vkq4)

But as we advance, the Union forces cross the river too.
(https://i.postimg.cc/YSFjs9Qg/961523-B5-14-EA-45-C9-8884-E983-FC4-B11-FA.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/mcbbcTX2)

Rebels successfully take an undefended town. Now I’m getting good at taking undefended towns.  lol lol
(https://i.postimg.cc/Qx6BBvXB/D353-B986-5707-4-B71-9-F2-D-3-E5-AC5-F4065-F.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/RNHCysJ9)

(https://i.postimg.cc/v8txyckt/FC334844-76-D5-4926-B715-64439-C1-BDD72.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/bddwHNzZ)

Confederate and union troops give battle in the middle of the battlefield.
(https://i.postimg.cc/52T6gvQb/F59-D42-D8-49-C1-44-EF-9-AB3-658-E85471-FAA.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/LJk96JVb)

JC’s cavalry advance on the bridge objective, taking on the Union “baggy trousers” brigade.
(https://i.postimg.cc/7LSYNRyn/07-E8-C85-D-EBAB-476-D-BC55-CCDCF0-E58-E46.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xkT2ft8X)

Confederate troops flood the middle ground. What could possibly go wrong ?
(https://i.postimg.cc/HkqkXgFL/648-C032-E-F205-4-B42-965-B-230-C5-E6003-B9.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/G4jRnZL0)

(https://i.postimg.cc/K8kY1zqV/DE8-E2-AA9-2-C4-A-4-BB5-A6-EC-FE2-F6-C79-D975.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/yDKK5VzX)

JC’s cavalry mixing it with Union infantry.
(https://i.postimg.cc/9fHczBqR/5-DC5-E39-B-ED44-417-C-990-B-D73-F5732-C159.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/CR73Qk7S)

Now it all goes terribly wrong for the Confederate forces. JC’s cavalry get cut to pieces by Garry’s union infantry and his union artillery. Very few of JC’s cavalry survive.
(https://i.postimg.cc/SQgQV8H3/0-BCDC2-DA-4521-4292-A534-125-BAA1783-D4.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/QVWrdB8J)

On the Union left flank, Ian’s union cavalry reluctantly advance on the confederate infantry holding the town.
(https://i.postimg.cc/15Tm1SmK/4-CFBF375-E735-4361-A38-C-6-D29013-ADE81.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4m6kprhK)

This all turns sour for my confederate infantry in the town, as Ian’s cavalry cut them down.
(https://i.postimg.cc/DwLTVbY2/1-B375-B93-5683-4960-9-DFC-CEDEF956518-B.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/pmW7zyH7)

Now it’s all gone pear shaped for us on the confederate side. JC’s cavalry have lost the left flank, my infantry in the town are losing the right flank, and union troops are swarming through the centre. Oh heck.
(https://i.postimg.cc/NFSWSg69/3-C9-E9-C23-4655-4-B6-F-8-A22-94-BAC20-B0-D13.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hQ8y7R3c)

Final stand by confederate troops, with their objective “the bridge” that they are supposed to be “defending” off in the distance, surrounded by Yankee troops.
(https://i.postimg.cc/Jn4VBY7n/E4972-B74-2041-452-A-BC13-51249095-C06-A.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/FfqnMZL5)

Poor day for the confederacy, but great game, nice clear rules, and good friends, just what weekends were made for.

It looks fantastic! I had a productive day doing needful stuff, but I would rather have been there wargaming  :(
 JC's cavalry look great.
It looks like the plan was "a bridge too far" for the Confederates, it was a long way away from their start off points, and they had a share of bad luck too?
Questions: How did the Union Zouaves get over the river in such good order? Wade it? I am surprised that the Rebels didn't try to fire on them, or maybe they couldn't get in range quick enough?
Am surprised the Rebs didn't make a better defence of the town?
How did everyone find the new rules compared to TMWWBK? Quicker game?

Great fun was had. You do not need masses of figures to have a fun game.
What was on show was about half of what we can (already) put on the table, but that came
to four 24pt forces.  The Confederate infantry out numbered the Yanks, but were poorer
quality. The Rebel cavalry were better quality than their Union counterparts but had the
misfortune to be in range of the Northern cannon (the only one on the table).
Both sides (I'm sure) would do things differently if we replayed the scenario. That is true
of most wargames. The important things were:-
Good scenery; Good figures; nice simple rules (I am getting too old for long complex ones);
Lots of dice throws (so we can blame them & not our generalship); Good friends talking lots
of tosh & Bacon butties.
Life is good.

All set for next game.
Could be a 3 players against 2 according to Has.been.
Table set. Hoping to block a few “lines of sight”, so we don’t get blown away by Garry’s artillery again....

JC & a circus elephant under canvas together?
Definitely some 'in tents' excitement.
Title: Re: ACW Rebels and Patriots 28mm
Post by: flatpack on June 09, 2019, 08:17:41 AM
Here we go. Yesterday we played the second game at my place.
Situation.....Rebs have a two gun battery, on a hill, overlooking the union forces.
If the Rebs can hold out with the guns, to beyond move 5, they get honour points. If the union forces get the guns, then they get honour points.
So JC and myself played the Rebs, trying to hold out with the battery, and Garry, James, and Pete, played the union troops.

(https://i.postimg.cc/fTm9fXRv/7828-C038-6-EA3-42-B7-9957-6-CF3-B728-AB39.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hf4vSXxJ)
Initial deployment shows the Rebs battery lower right hand corner, supported by 3 infantry units and a skirmish to the right of it, in the woods.
Then you can see the majority of Reb infantry units on the baseline, behind a wall.

Union forces are massed, ready to go.
(https://i.postimg.cc/Hswryg6Z/025-F61-C0-DBBF-4882-B428-7-A59-DC1-BBF1-F.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/vcmYJpFf)
Union right wing. Cavalry, cavalry, and more cavalry. Gulp.

(https://i.postimg.cc/9fFw2ntx/13-FB1-B3-C-57-D8-450-D-87-D2-74332-CC103-FE.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/VJpkB4hM)
Union centre and left wing....footslogger everywhere.

(https://i.postimg.cc/rm7DSF6b/94-E598-C6-2427-4-B0-F-9-D1-B-CA0-AC86-DF929.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/tZtRbb4t)
View from the battery position.

Union right wing comes onto the battery. I liven up my reb foot troops, to move forward to support the guns.

(https://i.postimg.cc/zv1JzLYJ/94962440-A95-E-458-B-AC61-2-C28-D633-ABE7.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/phqNkLd7)
Union right wing press closer and closer. Garry’s union centre, having a stroll in the park, moving forward with no reb opposition. Why is this happening ? Well mainly because the right reb wing is mucking around trying to get over the wall, so it could come and support the artillery.

(https://i.postimg.cc/v8Ly7ZdV/565765-ED-EF34-4-A9-F-8-E93-9-FE1-E974477-F.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/grJ1mdjz)
Reb right wing, on walkabout.

Union cavalry start the charge to the guns.

(https://i.postimg.cc/DyxKDp0f/7-A87845-D-9-DF9-4-D99-B791-AF685658-FB86.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/1fVTVHDb)
Reb infantry to the right of the guns, valiantly fight off the cavalry, but there seems to be cavalry everywhere.

(https://i.postimg.cc/63rkhYFX/D6-A45-F7-D-325-B-4-F17-8-EFA-AE482-B1-A02-BC.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/gX0tzqYS)
The Reb right wing FINALLY cross the wall, but instead of turning left, to race over to the guns, they advance forward, to encounter another union force, commanded by James.

(https://i.postimg.cc/3wv5kKBW/FE8-A4-D12-0524-4-DB2-A141-8522-D29-BA9-AD.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/WDTfKcxP)
Now this is James’ unions that are dragging JC out to fight. They had slowly progressed over the battlefield. That’s what happens with poor movement dice rolls.

(https://i.postimg.cc/SsfP9jzQ/AD112-BF7-76-C0-4-A39-8116-8657-F50-C867-F.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/8JswQpHx)
Back to the main objective of the battle, the two artillery pieces.
You can see here, I’ve already lost one gun crew of the cannon, and I’m down to only half a crew on the second one.
Union forces working well, with skirmishes drawing my fire.

(https://i.postimg.cc/KzxqmFp6/DE8-AB367-AA1-C-4-DFB-AFC2-C07-C5290-B132.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/PLVz4Gjy)
Last stand around the guns. Both crew dead, and now we have both sides battling to save the guns.

(https://i.postimg.cc/m2tdLmVg/DD3-A9525-4-B66-4697-BC67-FBBD515-CE0-F4.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4mRvwbrD)
The Rebs are losing their grip around the guns.

(https://i.postimg.cc/qMPGk4z1/65-F5-E7-F1-B9-D5-444-B-A447-E35-BC873-EB15.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/F7xSptbS)
Finally the Rebs break, and can hold the guns no longer.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Prp4sPrL/C713-C89-A-9-D3-C-405-B-B56-A-B4967-A907-EB5.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/7f47SPzD)
Union forces march onto the guns and capture them.

(https://i.postimg.cc/JnpqmXkX/7579906-D-2-C23-4-C71-836-F-032-ABA83-F47-C.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hz7x1fM4)
Union central section and left wing had it a little easier, as the focus was on the guns.

(https://i.postimg.cc/hjDrHsfg/C62-A3-FA3-CDF2-4-E5-B-843-D-CFB50-B297-DF6.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/wtrLNhXb)
The Reb right wing finally made contact, but unfortunately it was too little, too late.

So, thus endith another great game, with loads of figures, loads of movement, dice throwing and laughs.
Thanks all for playing.
Let’s do it again some time.
Flatpack.

Yes much fun was had, especially by me (Union right wing). As the rules are so
smooth & flowing I got a chance to fight (Plumpire = Player & Umpire). As I had a
lot of Cavalry (courtesy of Bob & JC) I thought, 'What the heck, lets charge in'
I fully expected to get blown away by Flatpack's firepower (As I was moving I thought he
would be able to stand his ground & shoot me to ribbons) As it turned out I was very lucky.
Was it Napoleon who said, 'Don't give me a good general, give me a lucky one.'.
If I was mad enough to try that again I would make the cavalry 'aggressive' (costs just
one point & means, not only do they fight better, but IF they win a melee, they can follow up)
I had several nervous moments when my cavalry retired from melee & were just 6" away
from a LOT of angry Rebs. If Flatpack had been just little luckier with his 'firing' activation throws
it would not have been a happy day for the Union.

However, much fun was had, many bacon & sausage butties along with hash browns & mugs
of tea were consumed (thanks JC for them) and many thanks to Bob & Mandy (Flatpack & Mrs
Flatpack) for looking after us. Another great day.
Congrats to:-
James (Vodkafan) for being the first in the group to get to the rank of Captain (still alive);
John (JC) for getting all those nice cavalry finished, shame all the Confederate mounted troops
only arrived after the guns were lost. (also getting 3 sets of double ones in the same
              activation turn;
Bob (Flatpack) for finishing the barn so nicely, all the troops you provided & (as always) being
              such a genial host.
Garry (Dicemaster) for showing us all how to be in the middle of a crowded battlefield yet
manage  to avoid ANY possibility  of fighting (other than at long range) & losing
just ONE figure (when JC got a double six on an activation, followed by a three,
which meant Garry took some fire from an unseen enemy unit/force/sniper?).
If you haven't tried the rules with your mates, once again, I recommend you do.

Here are some pics from the other end of the table (the Union left flank/Confederate right flank).
Covered by a cannon on the hill, 3 infantry units advanced steadily in mutual support. However my fourth rearmost unit  with my officer in it refused to advance for 3 turns so the units started to go out of his command range !

At the end of turn 3 they were all strung out.

Luckily the Reb units  facing them seemed to be intent on reinforcing the battle at the other end of the table and most were moving in that direction....
...because Garry's troops were advancing steadily up the the centre of the table while the other Union battery slowly wins the artillery duel with the Reb guns on the hill..

One of the Reb guns falls silent with the crew dead around it and the Union Cavalry take advantage; here the breakthrough starts to happen...

Turn 4 my officer unit finally catches up which stiffens up the activation rolls for everybody and the Zouaves get into the orchard ..

Some Reb units are there to face them

We take some musket balls but before a proper scrap can start The battle is won in the middle . The Reb batteries are overrun and supporting units routed or destroyed. Confederate reinforcements couldn't make it in time to stop the tide of dark blue rolling over them. A bad day for Johnny Reb!

A good day for Lt Joshua Appletree though who managed to survive the battle and get promoted to Captain without doing anything much!

Mr Brady hasn't even got the wagon back to the town yet, never mind the dark room.
