While adapting the old 'Trail of the Lonesome Slime' CoC scenario for my group (resetting it in 1919 as opposed to 1982) I realised that the models I've got to represent Shoggoths really wouldn't do ;) (they're enormous in CoC), so, gripped by a sudden and irrational enthusiasm I thought I'd make one.
The construction is fairly simple, a series of balsa slices to make up a frame, covered in papier-mache and given a skin of air-drying clay. There's a fair bit left to do & I'll probably add some tentacles before it's finished. Hopefully it'll put the wind up the party when it appears :D

Brill :D

Masterful!

That is just a completely new level of awesomeness. Looking forward to seeing the finished version. Thanks for sharing.

Kinda pretty in a terrifying way.
-
:o Wowzers! :o
Best. Shoggie. Ever.

I think Fenris Games do quite a nice shop bought one:-

But holy cow is your one awesome. I’m so gonna have a go a making one of my own.

Most excellent!! Looking forward to seeing it painted and set on a band of hapless adventurers. Are you planning a trail of bones to put in it's wake as it slowly edges over the prone, terrified goodie-goodies?

If everybody had a surfboard
And an Elder Sign,
We could all go shoggie surfing
In the land of rime.
We could bowl down all those penguins,
And a camp or two.
We should all go shoggie surfing,
Tekeli-li to you!

Man! Great work :-*

Many thanks for the kind words, I hope to move it along a bit this weekend & have it finised by next week.
MHoxie - fantastic bit of cod Beach Boys!
Dezmond - I'd forgotten about the Fenris one, I'm not sure it's on their site any more - I think it's made to order. By all means feel free to nick my method, it's probably the easiest way to make something that size & it's also pretty quick (you'll probably spend more time waiting for things to dry - glue, paper mache & air dry clay than actually modelling - I used standard cheap Das by the way - just roll it out to a couple of mm thick & drape over the frame like icing a cake - you can then wet your fingers & smooth it round the armature. I taped a bunch of old brushes together to make the stippling - using the handle ends, & some finer stippling with an old stiff bristle brush. The eyes are just balls of dried Das pressed into the skin, which is raised up around them a bit).
Sterling Moose - funny you should say that, a clue in the original scenario is slime full of penguin bone fragments - I had thought of a pool of slime full of disarticulated skeletons might be fun (probably just use pva tinted with a little ink).
-
Wow. How did you do the texture and bubbles / eyes?
Even without the tentacles, it looks like a big wave of doom. :D
-
Cheers ced1106, the eyes are just various sized balls of the air-dry clay - made the day before putting the skin on so they were hard enough to just press into it. You could just as easily use an assortment of beads or ball bearings if you've got them.
-
Bloody Hell! lol
Fabulous.

That is really cool. :o You definitely need a tentacle or three whipping about.
-
Eww... I like! :D
-
We’re going to need a bigger boat!
Love the scale of that, proper Mythos.
-
Still too small ;)

"Every year, we at the Shoggoth's Trust, take in dozens severalat least one Shoggoth cruelly abandoned by thoughtless cultists and left to roam untended, unloved an unfed.
Could you provide a stable home for Shep? He's a charming chap some 55'120'35' long and about 504560tons. Playful and loyal, Shep loves to play fetch, and if he brings you the head of an Elder Thing, well it's just that he likes you!
Remember, a Shoggoth's not just for Dagonmas."
Finished Shep the other day, didn't add pseudopods in the end as I figured that transporting it would be tricky enough, and they'd probably snap off - plus I rather like the rolling wave look. (The WIP 1/56 Lanchester armoured car's there for scale)
-
Amazingly good, Matt. What a great piece of modelling and painting :-*
The Lanchester looks rather tasty too 8)
-
Cheers Richard, it was fun to make. The Lanchester is a nice model (Empress - one of the molds they acquired from another manufacturer, I can't remember who), but does require a few tweaks:
The turret was too short, and needed a 1mm plasticard shim, its hatch was clearly too small, but was easy to fix, and the lower parts of the hull sides lacked detail. Luckily there's an excellent recent 1/35 scale model of this vehicle (by Copper State), which shows what should be there - a number of seams, riveted plates, stowage, and a bucket in a bent metal holder. All of these were pretty easy fixes with various gauges of styrene sheet. I hope to finish it (it's about half done) soon, and will post pics once complete.
-
That is quite the fugly shoggoth you've created, sir. And quite the scale implied by "At the Mountains of Madness."
-
Cheers sglancy12, I'm rather looking forward to springing it on the unsuspecting (unless they're reading this) group. I thought I might put my (perfectly nice) CP Models Shoggoth on the table before going:" hang on, that's not a Shoggoth, THIS is a Shoggoth!"
Given how quickly they can move, (compared to a man of foot) I'm hoping to see a Model T - Shoggoth car chase, figers crossed the party have figured out improvised explosives lol
-
WHat an amazing project. Very inspiring!
-
Love it!
-
Better late than never (just seen it now) - best shoggoth I've seen (not that many people live to see a second one).
