I am moving back into my miniature Borneo and working on getting my Dayak headhunters some proper transportation. I found this great interpretation of an 1840 picture of a Dayak War Prahu on the internet and am going to use it as inspiration for my two canoes.

I have been lucky enough to acquire two Scheltrum Dayak war canoes from eBay over the years.

They are nice models but lack the prow swivel gun and the rear decorative motifs. I put a request out on LAF for some swivel guns and my buddy Svennn came through with flying colors. Thanks Svennn!! Here are the prahu with the swivels guns.

I am currently working on the stern decoration. I started by cutting a pattern out of card, then cut 4 additional pieces that will be glued together,

Now I have turned to the streamers that will be attached/sandwiched between the two cut card motifs. I approached these streamers the same way that I do pandanus trees (for those that have seen that build). I cut strands of florist wire and sandwich them between masking tape.

Next will come the trimming and gluing. Comments and critiques are especially welcome now as I am early enough in the projects to modify design and output.

Watching this keenly as I have a group of Dayak warriors. :)
-
Poiter50 here is a Dayak longhouse that I scratch built about 10 years ago. I plan on doing more Dayak stuff including a log boom to block the local river.

Nice, Lon. Are you planning on any particular period or opponents?
-
Different 8)

Poiter 50,
Yes, there is one turn of the 20th century Steamship Captain that will be bedeviled by both Dayak and Malaysia pirates as he goes about his rounds. I plan on running a pen and paper campaign in conjunction with both Pulp Alley and role-playing games set around the South China Sea and Dutch East Indies.

Brilliant Lon but you're gonna' need more Dayaks ;)
-
Chris,
That is so true!!! However, I need to assemble a small fortune to send to the starving artist who has graciously agreed to paint them for me lol lol I am sure that you noticed all of the fellows with sumpitans in the picture.

Thank you, I look forward to more posts on this.

Some progress. I have trimmed most of the streamers and have started initial assembly on one of the aft decorative crests.

I have finally (mostly) finished the aft decorations for my Dayak canoes. Here is a (probably too) detailed history of that build. Here are the streamers being attached between the two motif sandwiches.

Here are the interim aft motifs that need to be finalized and attached.

Boring for the moment but soon to be glued on and painted. Things will change if I can avoid too much of the blue ruin.

This is really cool - I should include Dayaks in my rather all-encompassing marshes project.
You also have a good excuse to Include Sandokan and Rajah Brooke!
-
Vanvlak,
One of the Rajah Brooke's will definitely make an appearance!

This seems to be the only Museum model of a Dyak vessel I can find, though there are a surprising number of Maori, Alaskan, Solomon Isls. and Polynesian examples about... :?

Thanks Sukhe,
There are a couple of pictures out there of Dayak two masted deeper water vessels that look to be related to dhows. They are on my wish list but I will have to find time to build them. Now on to the completed and installed aft decorations.

Tomorrow after the glue has well set I will undercoat. I feel like I am finally making progress.

A very cool and unusual project. I look forward to seeing more.

Ah, splendid! 8) 8) 8)

As a Malaysian gamer I'm quite keen to see how this turns out
-
Thanks fellas. Things move along. I have both canoes undercoated. I have the initial coat of paint down on the hull, upper deck, and aft decoration on one prahu. The swivel, ropes, screen, and bamboo framework still require a first coat. The yellow striping looks distinctly orange at this point. I am trying to model a color based on ground turmeric, which is found in the Pacific. As the layers build it will become more yellowish in tone.

Nicely done, m-g!
-
Superb ! Well done !

I have the second coat of paint on everything but the ropes. The second ink coat goes on tomorrow. Here is how she is looking.

I wanted to get some shots of the interior bamboo, which I think turned out pretty well but doesn't photograph well.

This may be a little better.

Here is a head on shot, which would be a pretty scary view if you didn't have some pretty heavy firepower to respond with.

That looks great Lon 8)
It does look very impractical though lol
-
Excellent !
With your tribesmen and your boats, you're the King of Guam !!!
-
This looks very nice, a very special project.
What are you planning to play with this? Vs. British, vs, Dutch, vs. Chinese or other Dayaks?
-
Lovely work, Lon.
:-* :-*
Cant wait to see the finished article/s.
:D
-
Brill!
-
That's Ace ;D
-
Absolutely stunning work!
Such beautiful scratch building :o
Thanks for sharing. I’m inspired to try harder on my own projects.
-
Brilliant work Lon :-*
-
Watching with interest. I have a couple of war canoes to scratch for Polynesia - maybe not Dayak prahus but your work is still inspiring to me.
-
Thanks fellas! I am just back from the beautiful island of Saipan and hope to finish this canoe in the coming week. I am not sure if I will proceed with the second canoe at this point. I have some Chinese buildings beckoning and some mounted Chinese bandits that have been neglected on my painting table for months.

I finished the one prahu today. Here is a side view

Per usual my photography skills are substandard and I will try to get some better shots with better light in the next couple of days. Until then here are a couple of shots of a Dayak raid on another Dayak village as I could not resist pulling out some toys to put the prahu in context.

Everything on the table is built and painted by me except for the spectacular Eureka Dayaks that are my pride and joy and painted by the great painters Bugsda and Orctrader.

Lovely work, mate.
You should be very proud of that, an original of your own construction!

This is a seriously cool project. As has been previously said in this thread, I need to put more effort into my projects. ;)
