Title: Portable hobby station
Post by: tuco74 on May 13, 2019, 10:24:30 AM
Morning all,

I'm just about to embark on a house move and it looks as though I'm going to have to give up my mancave.  :'(

I should be able to store my hobby stuff in an accessible place, but I won't be able to have a painting desk set up permanently.

Can anybody recommend a portable hobby station. There seems to be a lot of choice so I'd appreciate anybody's experience. I want something that can hold maybe a dozen Vallejo paints, brushes, handful of modelling tools and some minis all at the same time. If it's big enough to use the lid as a 'desk' that would be even better.

Many thanks in advance.

How much are you willing to spend? Are you looking for something with a carrying handle, like a suitcase or a small table? I used to ogle ModelMaq Modeler's Briefcases (https://www.core77.com/posts/55002/A-Workspace-in-a-Briefcase), but by the time I gathered the funds, the MT02 was no longer available. :( Frontier Wargaming's Portable Painting Station (https://www.beastsofwar.com/news/portable-paint-stations-model-cases/) is probably the closest alternative, but might not be sturdy enough, depending on one's handling.

Have you considered IKEA?

Knotten Standing Desk (https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30299485/)

(https://www.ikea.com/us/en/images/products/knotten-standing-desk-white__0406247_PE592160_S4.JPG)(https://www.ikea.com/us/en/images/products/knotten-standing-desk-white__0468317_PE611389_S4.JPG)

Sturdy, yet light enough to be moved about and with plenty of storage compartments.

not the cheapest things out there, but there are more pricey too.. have purchased some of their stuff, and as long as you are careful with your assembly they are quite nice.

or use for inspiration and put something together that more suites your personal requirements.

I expect flames to whip up around my feet and consume me for this  lol but GW actually have a couple of offerings although might need adapting for other paint ranges.

HobbyZone also have painting trays
http://www.hobbyzone.pl/en/5-tables-for-painting/

I have the smallest size and its good for the things you are talking about, but it is open all the time, not closeable.

If you are in the UK, Hobbycraft have a special on this:

It looks like it would be useful storage, but no painting lid. Various MDF cutters will do you a painting station.

Thanks for the input everybody. I already have a painting tray so that's an option for a painting area but I'll need to be able to keep that empty when not in use. The best suggestion I've had so far is actually a make-up case but I'll have to do some more research on that one to find the right one.

good point there

https://inglotcosmetics.com/makeup-cases/classic-collection/item/749-portable-makeup-station-black

and similar elsewhere - some very expensive - built in power connections, and lights, mirror options perhaps not so useful..for us, but.

Certainly compact and easy to store as suitcase.
