Title: WIP: 6-module board (final pictures of now 4-module board 30.08.09)
Post by: Zafarelli on June 20, 2009, 01:26:26 PM
I am currently working on a board for my Near Future game at TST in September, here are two preview pictures:

I plan to do six segments, two roads (as seen), two industrial yard boards, and two beach boards.

For the ground, I used a method I found on Antenociti's Workshop a while back, and always meant to try out. Instead of spreading glue on the boards, and then sprinkling sand over it, you sprinkle the sand first, and then spray it with diluted white glue several times. When this has dryed, another coat of diluted (and in this case, dyed) PVA can be brushed on. I quite like the effect, especially at the roadsides, where the sand has blown over the street.

At the moment, I think it is still way too dark, but I guess that can be mended with a few more coats of water, PVA and paint.

Now I'm still struggling with the surface of the industrial yard. I don't want a uniform concrete surface, but something more diversified, with a mixture of concrete, tarmac and paving. I thought about using plaster with a bit of sand mixed in, which is then sanded even, letting the sand show through. But I guess plaster might be a bit fragile if it isn't protected by PVA or something. Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

Nice! I like the ground color (as far as I can tell from the pictures) and will only do a light colored drybrush over it if it’s possible.

For your concrete, tarmac, pavement, etc have you thought of using sheet of different grade of sand paper? I think it could work well.

* Edit; I forget to ask what scale are the figures on the board and who make them? I’m curious, I know ;)

I am always a bit uneasy about using sandpaper, as it usually wreaks havoc on toppling minis, but I might use this again. What I liked about the plaster thing was that you could so easily simulate cracks in the concrete parts.

The figures are 28-30, quite in scale with the Copplestone and Foundry Street Violence stuff. Some of my latest attempts, as is the car in the background 8)

For tarmac.

In the past I have painted the board matt black with exterior black undercoat.

I have then thrown, gypsum plaster, and cement (as unmixed powders) and a bit of builders sand at the board.

The powders soak up the colour and give a bit of texture.

when it is dry its still a bit dark, so empty a teaspoon full of clay based cat litter (unused) over it and crush it with the palm of your hand and then brush it over with your hand ....

Bungle, I'll give that a try, thanks.

Today's progress (at least part of it)

Looking very nice, I like the concrete slab effect. Is it just painted on or do you have cracks between each slab?
Title: Re: WIP: 6-module board
Post by: Zafarelli on June 22, 2009, 06:19:00 PM
At the moment, it is not painted at all. The slabs were done with individual pieces, with sand in and around the gaps. The sand was simply sprinkled on the gaps, partially blown away, and then fixated with a spray-on of diluted white glue. The cobbles are a nice textured wallpaper (in fact, the concrete slabs are the same wallpaper, just turned around).

One and a half more to do, then on to the painting...

Hoooray, I will buy three of them!!!
 lol

...ahem, seriously, this really is great stuff so far, looking forward for a game(or two) on the boards.

Finished the groundworks on three of the six:

The black sqares are entrance hatches to some underground maze, primed black. During game, they could be used to travel from one to the other without risking being shot.

I'm still struggling a bit with the earth parts. I want to depict something vaguely northern European, but I'm not really sure I want to cover the whole surface in grass, which seems to be the most common around here. Maybe I'll try drybrushing green for some more vegetal look than brown dirt, and add some static grass and flock here and there.

The modules don't look like they can be rearanged, but the you say there are six, so maybe we're missing the missing two links that will make them re-arangeable (if thats a word at all?).

Looking good! When will those Industrial Buildings be available BTW?
Title: Re: WIP: 6-module board
Post by: Zafarelli on June 24, 2009, 07:06:06 AM
Dijit, you've struck a nerve there :) I carefully planned the layout for a maximum of rearrangeability, and came up with quite a few possibilities. Then I added height levels, and most of them were gone. And then I added floor textures to the concrete/paved parts, and most of those left were gone as well. I can't really say how many possibilities of combining the boards are left, but variation can still be achieved with buildings, fences, and other not-fixed stuff.

Uti, I'll reopen the shop as soon as my provider answers my calls or emails regarding the server move he announced to me in ... March. I am getting a bit unpatient here myself. If you are interested, I can take pictures of the available segments, and post them here.

The buildings seen are the newer ones from this thread: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=9751.0

The old buildings will most probably be dropped from the shop in their current form. The molds for the wall pieces are still mostly in good shape, so the walls will be available at least until the molds wear out. But the mold for connector pieces has pretty much had it, which means I cannot produce complete kits at the moment.

In the meantime, I had to remove part of the groundwork on one of the boards because of a design mistake. It proved almost impossible, as I wanted the boards as resilient as possible, and thus chose a mixture of colored styrofoam glue, dyed gauze and sand for the unpaved parts. It works almost too good :) Seriously, I quite like it, as it doesn't show if some of the sand rubs off, and the gauze shining through in places gives a nice additional texture.

Aww, shit... I've had the factory building on my shopping list for some time. To far down it, apparently.

So for the record those factories are no longer for sale and there's no way that you're looking to remaster the moulds?

Bloody crying shame that!

Commander, at the moment, definitaly not. Later this year, I might make a new mold, if enough people will place a preorder. But I'll announce this as soon as I have sorted all the other stuff, like moving with the server, and setting up a new shop software.

Zafarelli you could try using gator foam for concrete slabs.  Then it would be easy to pockmark and make large cracks etc.  Nice work thus far.  Can't wait to see the finished boards!

Looks good so far.

Personally i wouldn't worry too much about interchangability - the best terrain look generally comes from tailor-made boards, rather than symetrical ones.  Less options for rotating boards, but lets face it, how often to most people switch their boards around?

I know what you mean:

I'm just in the process of building my first of 3 4 foot x 2 foot modern boards Ack, what I'm trying to do is make plug in areas where I can interchange buildings around the set road/pavement setup, should look ok, each board with a slightly different theme.

i) urban residential
ii) urban industrial (so Zafarelli get casting!!! ;)).
iii) still undecided maybe a bit county, or a park or a little church/farm???

I will have them all be able to link through road/path layout.

I'll stick it on a separate thread when I get chance.

Those are some unusual sizes for the boards. Isn't 2' very narrow? Unless you're playing 15mm maybe, just curious thats all.

No mate 2 foot wide urban boards for post apoc, zombie or future/modern war makes for very claustrophobic gaming! ;) Also it's a coffee table edition so looking at 1/2 games, quick action.

Anyway when the three are used together you've got a 4foot by 6foot table. (Remember no plasma cannons or titans here bud so no silly ranges!  :D).

Cheers though shows someone's listening!

Darkoath, thanks for the tip, but it's too late for that. I already made the concrete and asphalt parts from cardboard. I'm already starting to regret that, as it has warped madly. I hope I can still save it with painted-on cracks, and some more gravel.

Regarding the interchangeability, I'm with you. At a stage where the two large concrete parts could still be interchanged, all you got was a slightly different empty space to put buildings on. So I decided to just leave it and concentrate on the floor texture. And I'll still have boards that are small enough to be easily stored and lugged around.

My site seems to down again, so don't wonder why the other pictures won't load.

I started detailing the boards, and finally found the time to take a few pictures of the progress:

Overall shot:

Grass tufts, made from sisal washing line. Currently, they are not glued down, but just strewn about the surface. I'll probably keep it that way:

One of the trap doors and an escaped mutant, all hungry (an older sculpt I finally managed to cast). His one leg is slightly longer, so he must be limping badly :)

And a close-up of the concrete floor. I varied the ground colour a bit, and started paint on cracks:

Thanks, guys!

a few more shots, two detail pictures of the drain I installed yesterday:

The two sheet metal (well, plastic) covers can be removed. I quite like this, it could be used as exit/entrance, impassable terrain, or maybe dangerous terrain with a chance of breaking through the cover. Plus, there can always live something down there.

And another overall shot. Just playing around with the things already done:

And an arial shot:

New building. Actually the first thing in ages I built without consideration for castability. Relieving, sort of :)

Rusted corrugated sheet metal roof:

A detail shot of the interior I already posted on some other thread:

My favourite detail, rusted iron bars where the concrete has crumbled away:

Next will be some more vegetation on the rough terrain parts. I thought about using a mixture of dyed sawdust, tobacco crumbs, some of the sisal stuff the tufts are from, and birch seeds*, but I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Yeah, you should see some of the funny looks I get when I'm looting rubbish piles and taking grit from vacant lots and parking lots. Or people wondering why I buy a crud-load of cheap toy sets and stuff considering I'm too old for such things and too young to be a parent. lol

It's all for academic purposes, naturally.

Really good stuff, I really like the effect you got going with the road. I will have to emulate it.

Not too sure at the moment if I should add static grass or not. At the moment it is just sand, birch seed, and sisal snippets. Opinions?

I'm a little intrigued as to how you did the ground scatter, and chance of telling us how?
Title: Re: WIP: 6-module board (small update 06.08.09)
Post by: Zafarelli on August 07, 2009, 06:45:52 AM
Materials used were sand, birch seed and snippets of sisal washing line, unpicked and painted green. I scattered everything loosely around, and then sprayed it with diluted PVA. I use an old deodorant spray bottle for this, but can't give any tips to the mixture - maybe 5 parts water to 1 part PVA, and a few drops of paint. Be sure to spray clear water every couple of minutes, or the nozzle will clog up. And you need at least two coats if you want the sand to stay where you put it.

I think it gives a nice effect, as you don't get the harsh edges you produce when you paint on PVA first, and then add the ground scatter.

This is where I got the idea:

dijit, I think they are too big if used as actual leaves, but I think they make for quite good low shrub or vegetation. I glued them down using the spray-glue method described above, then painted and drybrushed them. I'll post a close-up with a miniature as comparison later this week.

Work seems to progress slowly. I think I've reached this 80:20 point, where the remaining 20% of the work take up 80% of the total time...

Anyway, here are a few pictures of the more remarkable details.

Added marker posts to the roadsides. These are not entirely compliant with the StVO, but I don't really care. I'll probably add a speed limit sign with a few bullet holes as well.

Next is a small fuel tank made from the Platformer Chemical Plant set. Incredibly versatile, this stuff. My son used it to built some space ships and a mechanical elephant while I only built a boring tank :) Built pretty much out of the box, with just a few details added:
