Just undercoated my VSF train.
It's a "Western Express" Toy train from Toys R Us with a some modifications ( new front end, cabin, detail parts etc).
I've got a lot of detailing to do before it's painted but the basic shape is there.
The mini is from Ironclad Minis to show the scale.

I'll start on the passenger cars etc. during the week.

Cool! Though still seems to missing that flash of genious your other conversions have. Doesn't scream VSF enough yet, though I couldn't tell you what it is. ???
-
Needs more rivets.
-
Its Doc Brown's Time Train form the third Back to the Future movie, is what it is! :-*
Really liking this Papa, bet it'll look aces painted.
-
It looks impressive
-
Yes, even though only primed, it looks wonderful. It's smaller than I'd imagined, but looks perfect next to the figure.
Let me guess, will it be black with gold trimmings? lol
I hope so!

Patience, patience... Wait till he shows us the carriages! lol
I must visit Toys R us...

Very cool, I can see there are a lot of changes from the original engine. How did you make the cab?
Thanks for sharing.
-
I like it. I have a very similar if not the same toy train. I like what you did with the cab.
-
Thank you all for the comments.
I can see what you mean by not being particularly VSF but there is still a little work to do...the carriages may be packing some mean firepower aswell.......... :D
I boxed the original cab in with some plasticard and cut out some "faux" windows and doors also in plasticard. The side doors are supposed to be hinged so that the bottom half drops down and the window section opens up ( like the one in Back to The Future). I was going to have the back open to ease the loading of coal but maybe it isn't powered with coal..........? ;)
I'll post more pictures as I go and I'm always happy to receive any feedback ( good or bad).
BTW: any ideas for a good name for the name-plate?

"The Wanderer" ? ;)

I like it alot. :)
How about "Merlin"? (don't ask me why, its the first name that came into my head and I quite like it.)

And then he could paint it 'midnight' blue. lol
I'm sorry, I will go back to my corner now.
-
Thanks for the suggestions on the name-plate.
Thomas in midnight blue!!! lol
I was thinking along the lines of something "martial" sounding ( like General) and then "Trojan" popped into my head ( because of the train's hidden weapons ).
But I REALLY do like Midnight Express.... I think that's the one I'll run with ( although Merlin is a very nice name for an Aerial Gunboat........)

If you're going with "Midnight Express" don't forget the Engineer's coat hook when counting up the hidden weapons.

Yes..... I did think about "Trojan" after I saw your link........
On the other hand the train has the ability to conceal itself in a huge cloud of steam........So you wouldn't see it coming...groan :D

I'll go with perv. You should see his collection of French lithographs. I'm still having counselling.

about the steam engine...
not sure if you already stated it
what is the gauge ? (track width/outer distance between the flanges)
I just try to figure out if it fits with my system

Hi,
As the train is a "Toy" the track that comes with it is seriously over-sized!!!! The actual distance betwwen the wheels is about 30mm (1 3/16") if that's any help.
Hopefully I'll get some carriages done this weekend.
cheers

High time I start building a contraption to stop the Midnight Express in its tracks! lol
But, it's just to hot inside the house for the moment...

former user: Interesting stuff on railway scales ( All I know is that oo is too small and O is alittle too big!) I would say that this train a little oversized, but I quite like to see vehicles nice and big on the tabletop. I have another one of these that fits perfectly with Blackscorpion Cowboys because they are nice and big.
Geudens: Aw, come on Rudi! I haven't even finished it and you're already designing something to wreck it.... lol

Any forum members over 45 may remember the theme tune to the old tv series :

:D Ah, happy memories of childhood, along with Zorro, "The Flashing Blade" and "Banana Splits".
Of course, there was also "Belle and Sebastien" and "White Horses" to ruin an otherwise good summer holiday morning of TV :-[

Looking at available train models here in the states On30 seems to be very close to 28mm in both train size and track width. It is an O gauge train the runs on HO gauge track.
-
I was looking at the On30 stuff for Old West gaming. An expensive way of doing things but there are some really nice ON30 Western trains by Bachmann........very tempting....
