I guess it's a bit of a craze going on right now. I'm not doing it, though. Yet.

You are absolutely right that Hue is the big thing in 28mm modern wargaming at the moment. lol
We are in the luxurious position that there are two outstanding new ranges of 1968 Vietnam figures coming out at the same time and both are sculpted to the highest standards. This has caused several people to start or contemplate projects. Vietnam had been largely ignored by 28mm figure makers and the previous ranges were rather uninspiring.
I think it is great. There are threads covering figures, vehicles, painting and scenery. I am interested in all of them.
I have not bought any figures, yet, but I already have a lot of jungle and I have recently bought the Vietnam supplement for Force on Force.
I think the new Empress Full Metal jacket characters will be the trigger for me to start. :o

Actually I think there are 3 or 4 new ranges for this year, 2 of them are just released or just announced and the other came out with very little fanfare. :) ;D

It’s just cool to see. I love Full Metal Jacket and the Hué battle scenes.
Urban warfare in Viet Nam, Republic of, wasn’t how many pictured that war. Interesting that Huéis now the place to be.

I suspect the Mark Bowden book bears part of the blame. I’m more interested in other aspects of the war myself but hey, ride the wave and I’m happy to line the coffers of Empress and Gringo in the full expectation those other parts will be coming along soonish.

I am still looking for comparison shots to see how the sculpting styles and weapon sizes match up.
The picture in reply #38 in this thread shows that Full Metal Miniatures are very big in comparison with Empress.

I think at this stage people have either Empress or Gringo.

Not for me Grant. Lovely miniatures, however, I've projects that need finishing before I leave this planet.

Bring out ranges designed by some of the best sculptors in the biz. Let your customers know you intend to go deep and long and have comprehensive ranges. Show case your work, take feedback and where needed modify. Of course it's going to be hot. Quelle surprise!

Just to be different we have been playing scattered events within the battle of Long Tan 1966. We have also played one action that occurred during the operations around Hat Dich 1969 and now are planning to run Bing Ba 1969
We are using a modified version of Chain of Command DMZ it’s some added house rules - Australian actions vs NVA, Local force VC and guerilla VC components involving all arms
Figure are TAG, westwind and baker company with some conversions

The focus on Hue will be primarily due to the cracking ranges that are seeing release at the moment. Personally I'm hanging out for ANZAC forces so I can game Long Tan and Binh Ba.

Well I suppose they would if they weren’t wearing Australian webbing and toting items like Owen Guns and M60s. To be honest you would be better off using the Eureka Brits for Borneo, even the Australians in Borneo, as they were using British kit.

If they come out in the usual packs of different weapons then I'll be going for the SLRs and probably leaving the M60's. The webbing shouldn't be too hard to make look the part, yokes are fairly similar, as are the ammo and water bottle pouches (looks a bit like the '44 patt). Only major issue would be if they had butt packs.
I do like the Eureka Aden Brits, a little bit light on the belt kit but plenty of room for adding GS bits. Size wise the would work very nicely with the Empress figures:

The Perry 8th Army packs are good for dressing up the Eureka Brits as are the Warlord and TAG ones. TAG sell individual pouches if you want to tart up the ‘38 pattern packs into ‘44 pattern versions. I’ve always hoped Kosta would sculpt a couple more figures with Armalites and possibly a Bren.

Yes having additional Empress and Gringo ranges available for Aussies will be good - and especially if anyone is considering doing civilians and some farm pieces like asian buffalo and other farm livestock
I have the eureka civilians and find them small - even given that Vietnamese in life are generally smaller they just don't look rights along side TAG and Baker company figs

Old sculpts, different sculptor (Mike Broadbent).The range is actually around 25-26mm.

Is there a plan to do ARVN troops as well we have wanted to use them in some of the scenarios we would like to play ...... especially some of the Surfs up scenarios put out by the lardies

Big yes to ARVN as they are usually ignored which seems pretty weird given their involvement.
Just finishing the M113, Its on my desk, and it will be crewed initially with ARVN.

I think part of it is distance from the event. Vietnam is now mostly something people read about in history books, not something people have either direct or one-degree knowledge about. Makes it easier to wargame - we can ignore some of the worst bits of the conflict (or make them "bloodless", as it were)

Yes , it the right time to do Vietnam , at least for me. When Platoon and Full Metal Jacket were shown in the cinemas i wouldn't have thought about gaming Vietnam for a minute, but now a big yes.
