Post by: Paul @ Empress Miniatures on May 31, 2019, 09:42:02 AM
Two new packs of 28mm Chinese PLA.

First pack contains 2 QBB95 Light Support Weapons fitted with drum magazine.

Shotgun for some close quarter support and a sniper using a JS 5.8mm.

The second packs contains two figures with LG5 /QLU11.

Prone LMG pack with a Type 67-2 GPMG with flexibility of using the bipod or tripod.

Find them hiding in the Empress Ultra Modern range under PLA.

Excellent, that will allow me to complete my PLA unit (the saw used to be one per pack - and you need one per squad...).

Now do you know anyone who would do a second mortgage on a soul?

Nice! Our on my list of things to order in July. Already put in an order for a bunch of Viet-minh and Spanish militia with AOG yesterday.
But these guys should finish up my PLA nicely. Then i guess I will have to pick up some vechicals for them.

Questions; generally, where would the shotgun fit in the platoon? Would it be issued on an 'as needed' basis?

For Empress; any chance we might get a gunner with pintle mount mg to fit on the humvee as the Chinese copy (if they use them that way)?

From reading on Chinese Humvee clones a while ago I believe that they don't use them as directly as the US does. Rather they see them in their original intended role - a logistic vehicle -rather than an armoured car for combat usage. You do see them with gunners, however as I understand it they have other vehicles in service for patrols / combat, etc.

However, there's not much in the way of Chinese vehicles in 1/50th, so a Humvee may have to do.

From the photographs in the Tankograd book, I would agree with Wyrmalia. There are some stretch (4x4 and 6x6) with pintle mounts and armour plus the PLA special forces soft top with weapon mounts. I cannot remember the Osprey photographs.

Mine currently have the Crooked Dice not HMMWV.

It does not look much like a Dongfeng Mengshi.

Saying that, a pintle mount of a Chinese HMG would be useful.

A ZBD03 (think BMD) would be nice or one of the smaller wheeled AFVs.

In Western armies, the shotgun is used as a door knocker with a frangible round. I would expect the pointman to carry it.

You can use the GAZ Tigr as a YJ2080 Sentinel. Supposadly used by some of the secirty forces. So good for rear area actions. And a BMP-3 can be used as a stand in for the ZBD-04.

Since we are listing what we would like to see. How about a set armed with Type 74 flame projector, toss in a Anti-aircraft missile trooper and drone operators. There is a single set of 3-5 miniatures.  :D

And maybe a set of Type 08 family of vehicles and some ZTQ-15 (Type 15) light tank's.   ::)

Hello, I'm sure I might be a little to late for this conversation, but do you guys know if the PLA bodies fit with other heads from Empress? More specifically, these:

The PLA range does not come with separate heads so you will have to chop their old heads off in order to use the Russian heads on their bodies.
They are also a little bit shorter then the other modern ranges. but aside from that, the heads should match up just fine.

Just thinking about some opponents for my Empress Chinese PLA...

Quick Question re: Empress US Modern US Army - are they wearing MICH or K-Pots?

The reason I ask is that I thinking of using them as the basis for ROC troops, which I believe still use K-pots... would there even be a noticeable difference at this scale (particularly as both would presumably have a camp cover over the helmet)?

Empress do separate K-Pots in their Marines range.

Unfortunately the only Empress US Army I have painted are Little Grey Men or US Law Enforcement so have Modern Russian helmets (NVG and visors respectively).

The US Army pictures (for example US04) do look different to the KPot ones but I could not be sure.

Empress US Army modern are wearing MICH.

Looking at recent pictures of ROK troops, they are moving away from an M-1 looking helmet to a MICH looking helmet.

If you want an historical opponent that could conceivably be re-engaged in conflict, think about the Vietnamese.

The modern VPA is switching to the STV-380 which is a Galil derivative/ AKM mashup. The naval infantry have Tavors. That said, there are heaps of AKs still floating around so simple head swaps of PASGT style helmets to any existing NVA range and you would have reasonable proxies once painted in camo paint. The VPA uses both plastic PASGT hard hats and ballistic PASGT copies.

Alternatively there are the ex Dadi i Piombi/Venexia now Jerwood range of modern Italians. The rifles look very similar to the STV once you have cut off the carrying handle (I've used some as Galil clones). These figures have separate heads so even easier to convert. They do come with body armour which is still relatively uncommon with the VPA but they have introduced it and are rolling it out.

Other options might be a mash up of the Rubicon figures with the WLG (ex WF) special forces in the now defunct  Zombie range. IIRC they had a clearance sale on these not long ago. None will be perfect but I suppose that's going to be the same deal with ROKA.

The US army figs come with MICHs, but are separate heads. Most of the USMC come with K-pots, but I believe they did make a few teams with out heads so make it easy to concert latter one.

Thanks, that was the answer I was looking for.

ROK are indeed moving away from M-1...to PASGT (ie K-Pot).... and now for some units, MICH.

Different units (reserves vs elites) will have different generations of helmets, hence the question.
