Hi
My first painted mins after an enforced break due to "real life".
Just to get back into the swing of things I decided to paint up the Alternative Armies abandoned beer wagon and Warlord Games Marshal Ney mini.
Both were fun and just what I needed after a break from the hobby.
The wagon is very nice and with the right paint job should do for a multitude of periods as an objective or just table dressing.
Thanks for looking in :)
-
Always nice to have table clutter.
Nice to hide behind & great objective if it is BEER!
Interesting to see how it effects the unit that gets to it first.
I am reminded of Asterix in Britain, where the Legionaries are
busy testing the Britons' 'warm beer' looking to find the one that
contains the magic potion. the line I most remember is,
'Dish his by marrel!'
-
Good to have you back 8)
-
A great way to get back into it. Never seen that wagon before, its great marker/terrain piece. Ney ain't too shabby either ;D
-
Thanks for taking time to comment guys :)
-
Welcome back and great work 8)
-
All you need now is a stove barrel and a few tipsy soldiers - or camp followers!
-
Great little models, we'll have to find a use for them :)
-
Thanks for commenting chaps :)

Yep,something snowy,perhaps those barrels contain vodka! ;) :)
-
Well done.
Where are all the looters?
A wagon like that, left alone,
stuff would be gone in no time. ;)

You're right of course,I'll have to rectify that :)
-
I also have that Alternative Armies model wagon and really should get around to painting it!
I thought your painting of the wagon and Ney was great and it may be just the push I was looking for.
Thank you for posting the images.

Great looking piece of table scatter. I am a big fan of this kind of thing.
-
Thanks for taking time to comment chaps :)

Still enthused with this period so painted up some troops for Ney to command, will follow up with some Russians shortly.
All minis from the Perry's 1812 range.
Cheers
:)
-
View of bases showing means of recording hits when using minis for Rebels and Patriot games :)
-
Some Russian bases added.
A base of Russian peasants could represent a skirmishing unit or a small unit of "natives" for R and P games and the Jagers a skirmish unit or a small light infantry unit.Next up another base of peasants.
Thanks for looking in :)
-
Very well done Keith. :-* :-*
A project to follow.
-
Excellent ideas here Keith, turning each unit into a little diorama is a great idea :)
-
Thanks for the comments guys :)
-
Looking great Keith ;D There's something about Napoleonics and snow scenics, its very iconic, looking forward to seeing more. ;D

Working on some Russian line infantry at the moment.
Thanks for looking in :)

Great work on these. It's perfect skirmish setting as there must have been loads of little scuffles all over during the retreat.
-
Great figures Keith, cant wait to see them in action :)

Beautifully done Keithy baby :-*

Well, this is all looking a bit splendid. Lovely work mate. I bottled basing my Russian 1812 stuff up in a winter theme and went with the dry and dusty advance instead. Your winter stuff just pops more though.
-
Cheers Steve :)
Glad you like 'em,more to come :)
-
Couple more bases completed, one French and one Russian, next up more French cavalry, this time Lancers. :)
-
Very, ver nice, given me some food for thought for my project.

Thanks Rogerc,my figures are being collected to game R and P not SP2 like your collection so will be on more modest numbers but I just couldn't resist the minis and the period :)

Great thread , Keith. These look ideal for the Rebels and Patriot rules . The Foundry figures have painted up beautifully. Hope you’re keeping well .

Ran a game tonight, umpired for Jeff and Meirion1955,used the Rebel and Patriot rules by Osprey.
French were bivouacked in the houses and had to beat off the Russian troops who were trying to set them alight.
Managed to get two games in ,both closely contested. The guys swopped sides at the interval, honours even at close of play.

Lovely collection, you can feel the cold. Inspirational presentation that has sent me back into the man cave to see if your basing format works for my Late Roman collection(large scale skirmish rather than big battle). Keep up the great work please.

Aar of tonight's game,French trying to reach safety but having to run the gauntlet of angry Russians.
Pic 1. French starting position.
Pic 2. Russian troops lie in wait.
Pic 3. French cavalry abandoning their infantry and making a dash for it!
Pic 4. French casualties mounting from the incessant sniping.
Pic 5. Looking sticky for Ney and the other unit which routed and took the Marshal's unit with it!
Rolling on the casualty table Ney recieved a severe wound but will recover ,however, he'll never play the violin again :o lol
Pic 6. Where'd everyone go? French skirmishers, abandoned by the cowardly cavalry and Ney's retreating units , are left to their icy fate :(
All in all an enjoyable game with the Russians scoring a win with 7 points to 2.
Thanks for looking in :)

Tonight's game set during the Retreat using Neil Thomas's OHW,scenario 13 .
Another good game with the French emerging victorious by exiting three units off the board via the road before move 15(actually on move 12).
All minis by the Perry's from their 28mm range.

A really good project this. The main reason I bought the black powder Clash of Eagles supplement was to ogle the winter retreat pictures in it. These look as good and having not seen this game system played out, I’m liking the basing. Every base is its own vignette making for a striking looking set of forces. Great scenery too.

Hi Colin, she's one of the figures in the wounded cuirassier straggler pack :)
Thanks Keith , one of the figures I haven’t got . If you’re looking for a suitable read , while painting these figures, I can recommend 1812 Napoleon’s Invasion of Russia by Paul Britten Austin . A Paperback trilogy under one cover which I picked up from EBay . Three books in one The March on Moscow , Napoleon in Moscow , and The Great Retreat. It’s a tapestry of eyewitness accounts which reads almost , like a movie script . Happy Painting . 😁

Got the collection out of mothballs for tonight's game of Rebels and Patriots.
The defend Mendenallski's battery scenario.
A good game resulting in a narrow Russian victory🙂
Pic 1. French large inf unit, led by Ney, advance into the battery fire.
Pic 2. French light infantry edge around the flank.
Pic 3.Russian Cossacks and Peasants rush to defend the battery.
Pic 4.French skirmish unit clear a stand of trees.
Pic 5. Mendenallski's battery sending some shot Ney's way.
Pic 6.A small size French inf unit suffering badly.
Thanks for looking in🙂

Painted these Warlord Games French Sappers up for this week's game(postponed unfortunately due to the heat!) Widow Creek Bridge scenario with Rebels and Patriots.
Fingers crossed for next week :)

A small update on this collection ,delay enforced by "real life" :?
I bought a sprue of plastic French infantry ,by Warlord Games off Caliver, to add a couple of men to make up a twelve figure Shock unit for Rebels and Patriots to the French Engineers in the last post, these are the two in blue to the left of the group.
With the remaining figures from the sprue I swopped out the heads with some spare Perry's and made up another base of French to add to the collection.
Hopefully these will see a game shortly :)
Cheers.

Tonight's game of Rebels and Patriots, we finally played the Bridge to Victory scenario,French Engineers attempting to span the river (pic no.3), with the Russians tasked with trying to stop them.
A close game ending in a Russian victory,a bonus being their artillery causing Ney ,who was leading from the front (pic no.1), to become a casualty and being carried from the field of battle severely wounded. Urrah!
Thanks for looking in :)

Small update,
A couple of bases of abandoned equipment pieces, gun and limber and supply wagon, from War bases and a couple of casualty figures.
Will use the equipment as scenic items to decorate the gaming table or can do double duty as scenario objectives perhaps? The casualties as permanent disorder markers?
Next up some Russian Dragoons as Shock cavalry for Rebels and Patriot games.
Thanks for looking in :)

Excellent, Keith , you’re amassing quite a collection. Russian Dragoons in greatcoats , the sulphur yellow facings contrast nicely with the green uniforms. The carts are little gems , I particularly like the tarpaulin, pulled back , and the barrels spilling off the base . I’m wondering which other units you have in the pipeline......?

The Perry's have just released some greatcoated Russians incl some Pavlov Grenadiers in mitre headgear, they're just the job for the Russian Shock Troops for R and P games.

You are right and also looking forward to North Stars new releases for Retreat from Moscow minis to accompany Muskets and Tomahawks Napoleonic version of the rules :)

Pictures of tonight's game.Scenario A from Rebels and Patriots rulebook.
Sorry for the poor picture quality,my tablet is not the best :(
Pic 1. Russian forces advance to deny the French an opportunity to reach the supply wagon bravely led by my freshly painted Dragoon unit which naturally became the first unit destroyed by the French lol
Pic 2.the French centre line unit reach the broken wagon and start scoring victory points. The musket at the rear of the unit is a first -fire marker.
Pic 3. The Russian advance led by the Jaegers approaches the wagon.
Pic 4.a rear view of the victorious Russian forces after beating back the French centre line unit.
Another good game with the French enjoying initial successes but the centre column was destroyed and caused some unfavourable morale results which the French player struggled to recover from.
In the end Russian victory 5-2 Urrah!

I have always wanted to play a retreat from Moscow Napoleonic-themed game - so this has really sparked my interest. Your French, in particular, certainly look the part.
I would not have thought of using Rebels and Patriots for such a theme - why did you decide on these rules? I have played these rules for ACW and AWI games and enjoyed them.
I have been considering Drums and Shakos as well as Fistful of Lead Horse and Musket for small Napoleonic games. Many seem to go for TFL Sharpe Practice, which I found require some effort.
Certainly house rules for weather, fatigue and lack of ammunition can be fun here I would imagine...
I think this graph from https://www.britannica.com/event/Napoleonic-Wars/The-Austrian-attempt-at-mediation, brings home the full horror facing the French army in their retreat...
Given descriptions such as these...
https://psource.sitehost.iu.edu/PDF/Archive%20Articles/Spring2011/LynchBennettArticle.pdf
One could have a game of French fighting among themselves for resources like food.
Certainly presents loads of skirmish opportunities. The reality of war certainly offers more horror than a game like Silver Bayonet can. lol
Interesting terrain options exist too - evidently at one point during the retreat frozen horse legs were being used as markers to show the way home...
-
Thanks for taking time to reply Golgotha, pleased you like the minis 👍
We've gamed using the Rampant series since their release and this was a natural progression, the rules are designed for this period so a no brainer really.
Only ever dabbled in Drums and Shakos and FFoL,don't like SP2 but I know all three are very popular :)
Thanks for the graph,it certainly brings home the ghastliness the troops must have endured and the attrition rates it indicates are truly horrific.

Cheers Nick👍

The Holy icon of Ukkert!

Pictures from last night's game of Rebels and Patriots.
After overnighting in a Russian village and discovering the Holy Icon of the Venerable Isaak of Ukkert, beneath the church floorboards , the looting French determine to scarper with the treasure.
The angry locals, with some military assistance , are trying to stop them escaping and recover the Icon.
Pic 1.The French preparing to leave the village.
Pic 2.Part of the Russian blocking force, guided by the villagers.
Pic 3.Russian Jagers not faring well in the woods.
Pic 4.French cavalry vanguard.
Pic 5.Russian infantry, not doing very well too on the French flank, minor casualties but terrible morale and rally dice.
Pic 6.French light infantry "escorting" the looted icon off the board.
Another fun game ending in favour of the French who ,comfortably in the end, exited the board with the treasure and thereby winning the game,Vive L'Emperor!

Managed to fit in a game tonight.
A Botched Relief, scenario from Neil Thomas's One Hour Wargame book but used Rebel and Patriots rules.
French force comprised of 16 points are attempting to secure a village in which to spend the night.
The Russian relief force of 24 points deployed on a hill and poised to assist but it's commander is proving rather inert.
Victory is achieved by occupying the village at the game's end.
Pic 1 and 2 the village defenders suffering early setbacks.
Pic 3 Cossack reinforcements arrive.
Pic 4 French cavalry routing.
Pic 5 Last French inf unit just failing to force entry to the village.
Pic 6 The game winning Russian gun, didn't fail a fire order during the game.

What a great project! I really like how colourful you painted these figures, almost as if they were abandoning every uniform regulation just to find something to protect them from the cold.

In answer to your question....I emailed the Perry's and they told me they have greatcoated infantry planned so some Russian Grenadiers when released, some Russian hussars wearing pelisse, then there's the Emperor in his sleigh,Russian militia.... So lots more to come 🙂

They look great, ragtag yet still a little bit more uniform than the not-so-elite units.

Tonight's game was a One Hour Wargames Scenario no.10,Late Arrivals, using Rebels and Patriot rules.
Russian forces had to negotiate a bottleneck to refuse the French the occupation of a village.
Terrible dice rolls on behalf of the Russians meant the bottleneck stopped them bringing their superior numbers to the battle, allowing the French reserves to arrive and secure the village.
Lots of fun with double 1's on ordered activations causing friendly fire on two occasions to both armies.
The Russians also suffered a setback when their officer fell as a casualty very early on in the game, shot in the back whilst running from the battlefield!

Great looking game, as usual! :-* :-* :-*

I don't think any of my officers are popular with their men,
not considering the number of scrapes they get them into. lol
Love the whole Napoleonic, winter, 3/2/1 basing and using Reb&Pat rule (a favourite)
just...WOW! well done, keep it up.
:-*
-
Really inspiring stuff and all the ranges seem to mix well. Top notch 👍🏻

Always look forward to seeing new content on this thread

More wonderful photos.
I went back and looked at all the pages.
You have a great collection.
I also noticed that I have not post many comments.
(My bad)
I shall try to make amends in the future.
Thanks for sharing all your great toys with the rest of us.

First game of the year tonight.
One Hour Wargames by Neil Thomas, scenario 13 (unlucky for some 🤔) Escape.
French forces rolled for 4x line,1x skirmishers and 1x artillery
Russian forces rolled for 3x line,1x artillery and 2x cavalry
Aar to follow, once the dust, sorry, snow has settled :)
-
Tonight's game found the French player needing to exit three units off the table via the road.
Pic no.1 French column slowly entering the table,The Russian first deployment on the hill started to harass them.
Pic no.2 The arrival of the Russian cavalry on the other French flank, and their subsequent charges shred the French infantry.
Pic no.3 All over by end of turn ten with only two French units left! Here are the match winning cavalry units.
Pic no.4 the surviving French units.
Another good game using these rules, we'll definitely be using them again.
Thanks for looking in 🙂

.Today's game,,another OHW by Neil Thomas,scenario 16,advance guard.
Russians entered the village first but combined fire from the French managed to evict them.A deployment error by the Russians meant they were poorly placed to regain the village so a French victory on turn twelve.Another fun game with twists and turns aplenty 🙂
Pic 1. Table set up.
Pic 2. French forces.
Pic 3. Russian forces.
Pic 4.Villagers seem excited to see visitors !
Pic 5.Russians defending village.
Pic 6. French infantry storming the village, looks like the villagers will be having guests for dinner tonight ;) :)

Me neither I bought the sequel and haven't read it, I know the series goes up to WW1. Not sure I enjoyed it that much to read all the Russian history, it's not really my thing. lol

Was attracted by the idea of the novel but didn't enjoy it that much :? Which is why I've dodged the sequels :)
