Title: Victrix Vikings
Post by: Suetonius Paullinus on June 07, 2019, 10:20:46 PM
Got mine today..yay!
What a nice set of plastics and so many options. It’s gonna take a while to build them!
Anyway, I’ve made a start at least:

I knew you’d be first off the mark SP  lol

Looks great. Must get the set, but the thought of making and painting 60 of them is a bit daunting  ::)

Sounds like a great kit though?

Thanks for your comments guys!
@Captain Blood
Lol! I am waiting for my transfers to arrive but couldn’t wait any longer, they are phenomenal. The amount of options and the resulting variety is mind blowing. Personally I can’t wait to do some kit bashing with some of the ancient Victrix kits I’ve got  8)

If I can recommend any plastic kit it’s gonna be this one. In my humble opinion a new benchmark in the hobby.

Cheers

Wow. High praise indeed  :o
Better even than their Romans?

They seemed to have pulled all stops here..the level of detail and the poses are second to none. The Romans are great but on top of this quality you get an astonishing amount of options.
That’s 11/10 for me. A must have for Dark Ages fans in my book. I’m sure there will be criticism of some sort as always in our hobby but for me that’s the best plastic kit I’ve bought so far. And I have very many..(ask my wife!)

Very immersive painting! It's imo a phenomal kit and can't wait to see how their Normans will look. :-*

There have been reservations about the chain mail on these models. But if this picture is anything to go by once painted the chain mail appears to look fine.

Lovely paint job by the way!

Standard SP brilliance yet again!

Any problems with air pockets stopping the paint getting deep into the chain holes? That's something I wondered about when looking at them.

@Paul
Thanks mate! And no, I haven’t noticed any particular problems in this regard.

I decided to get rid of the shield as long as I haven’t any transfers lol:

Work okay?

Tbh I like this solution better than having a visible joint within the mail shirt. So far no hassle..

Really nice, I am looking forwards to my "present" from Victrix :)

Hákon Blóðgeirr would be his Norse name if I remember my old norse correctly ;)

Lovely Andy  :-*

I know there’s been some bleating about the chainmail. The links do look oversized - but then all depictions of mail on inch high figures is representative, not truly accurate. I don’t think this is necessarily a worse way of doing it than rows of little dots... although looking again at your latest figure, do the links look ever so slightly hexagonal?

Bet they’re beautifully easy to paint though! Drybrush heaven ;)

Ah the never ending chainmail discussion  o_o
I know..Well, it looks fine to me but I’m sure some will disagree and not enjoy the figures for what they are because of it. In my opinion they are missing out big time here. In the flesh you wouldn’t even notice it I guess, particularly if you are over fifty like me, but a picture obviously magnifies dramatically.
And yes, they paint up very nicely indeed (although I don’t drybrush my figures, just Leadbelcher and Nuln Oil Gloss does it for me  ;) ).

Bootiful. I found someone on eBay selling single sprues for a fiver, so I've been persuaded to give them a go.

They are without a doubt the best plastic dark age figures around, and can compete with a few metal ranges too. With better chainmail, they'd just be near-perfect, but to me it almost looks like overlapping scales in the area below the belt on that latest figure. In fact, it is the fantastic quality (faces and hair on these, variable poses, quite a fan of the scale of most weapons too) that makes that chainmail 'issue' such a pity: it's such a big area on the model, and for me personally I can't unsee it, unless from quite far away. They're phenomenal otherwise, and SP's gritty paintjob suits them very well.

I only have Victrix' Greeks (and one sprue of Romans for some conversion work), and while those were good, they've really come a long way in the sheer number of possiblities they put on a sprue, and detail work looks even better on these.

I finally got mine yesterday and I have glued together a command frame and a regular frame.

I think the figures themselves are 10/10, easily the best plastic miniatures I have assembled, and they look like they will be easy to paint up to a good standard.

However I kind of dislike the poses, they are awesome if you want 20-30 of them for a skirmish game, but I play with big ranked units and I need to assemble them really carefully in order to actually make them rank up properly.

Also I don't understand why there is two different ways of attaching the heads, the chainmail coif thing looks really good, but I would rather have more choice,  eh... :p

I do have 180 of them so I guess I will just have to suck it up ;).
