Title: Daeothar's Home for Abandoned Paintjobs - a D&D Cleric
Post by: Daeothar on June 11, 2019, 09:13:42 AM
The last couple of weeks I've been having some fun finally finishing some paint jobs that have been lounging unfinished in the back (and bottom) of my display cabinet for far too long.

I started out with a squad of Griffin Miniatures Greys (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=117332.0), which rekindled my mojo after a painting drought of several months.

And with the flame burning again, I decided to take on a similar project; a Heresy Miniatures Customs team (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=117451.0). These too had been lingering half painted on my shelves for years, and now they're finally finished.

But this brought with it the embarrassing realization that there are just way too many of these unfinished projects collecting dust. Some of these were abandoned because of the next shiny thing, while others were because the reality of (RPG) gaming overtook my painting queue, but unfinished they all still are...

With the above results under my belt, I've come to the resolution to start finishing all those lost projects. There are entire regiments in there for mass battle games, but also single display pieces, and everything in between. This thread is here to chronicle my struggle to correct all those past wrongs.

So to start off this thread, I took out this single Warzone miniature. I received it as a birthday gift from my mother at least a decade ago; maybe even more. At the time, I did not know what to do with it, so it was stored. Several years later, in a bout of inspiration, I decided to paint it as a Weird World War miniature; I created a fancy base, undercoated him black and got as far as doing the skin when the project stalled. And he's been sitting idly for many years ever since.

Quote
Warnloser Angriff Rache Gruppe (WARG) Soldat, Model 3.7L. A mechanically and biologically enhanced German super soldier. He's the result of the V6 project, initiated when it was clear that the war was already lost. As part of an enhanced Werewolf program, these super soldiers were to be entombed all over the country, waking up at specific signals, ready to wreak havoc in the occupied fatherland, tirelessly attacking Allied and Russian troops until they were destroyed or spent. Armed with night vision equipment, advanced weapons and armour the equal of tanks, these completely ruthless automatons would be the ultimate terror weapon, long after the Reich had fallen.

That paint scheme works really nicely - I really like the dark armour against the pale skin and camo. I've always mentally parked Warzone figures as being a little too chunky and over the top, but seeing this guy is making me think again!

Nice painting!
I too have a load of unfinished projects(some of which include Warzone,Imperials and Lutherans). Great start!
PS your basing is fab :-*

Many thanks, guys :)

I only now have come to the conclusion that the pictures are a bit dark; I really should take the time to properly photograph my minis instead of quickly putting them on a piece of cardboard with a desk lamp over it and snapping away with my phone-camera.

The grey of the armour is not as dark in real life; it's VMC Basalt Grey, highlighted up to VMC Luftwaffe Grey. Also, the transitions of the highlights are completely washed out in the pictures, but rest assured; they're there. The same goes for the wood grain on the gun's grips and stock.

PS your basing is fab :-*
Cheers; that's high praise from somebody who makes such absolutely awesome terrain... 8)

I really like the painting on the Warzone guy.

I've been sorting out my painting room (which had become a junk room) and I've been scandalised by the amount of unfinished and some even unstarted projects I have. I need to stop buying new stuff and actually paint some of the old things. So many good minis untouched and unloved.

I suspect many of us are in the same boat 😂

ALmost 3 years ago, some forum members got the crazy idea to create a Space Marine chapter based on this very forum. Some brainstorming occurred, and the result was the founding of the venerable Lead Legion.

Some of us got around to painting some miniatures for this chapter, the idea being that we'd create an avatar of ourselves within the Legion. I went with being a Scout Sergeant, and was the first to complete a marine in the chosen colours of the chapter.

However; this was a bit of a rush job, in my race to be the first. Additionally, I did this painting while on vacation, and I had brought only very little supplies with me. Also, the lighting and conditions were, let's say, less than optimal.

So it had always been my plan to revisit this first guy. And I had built the rest of his scout squad too, but they lingered in WIP state for several years, with just the skintones completed, but very little else.

But in keeping with this thread, I eventually got to finishing them off, and they're now ready for action. In fact, they had previously been used (in their WIP state *gasp*) in a (watered down) game of Lost Patrol with my little girl (her scouts actually won the day too ;) ), and I intend for them to be used in that capacity from now on.

First, here's a shot of the entire squad:

Then there's the Sergeant. I changed very little to him, but I did replace the hamfisted, hand painted chapter badge and the alchemical symbol for lead on his right kneepad with decals I printed up for the squad.

I managed to foul up the application of the chapter symbol a bit though (too much Microsol while still repositioning the decal ::) ), so I had to retouch it by hand. And I just noticed a bit of a mistake there, which I will repair, but that was only after the pictures were taken, so bear with me on that...

Then the first scout. He's armed with the traditional scout load out of a Bolt Pistol and a Combat Knife. The colours on his left kneepad have been inverted, to indicate that he's the senior scout in the squad, and has command when the sergeant is not there. Obviously this has nothing to do with the fact that this decal too was ruined during application (it tore in at least 3 separate pieces) and I had printed no spares, so I had to use a GW issued number that unfortunately was white. No sir; nothing at all... lol

Like his brethren, he bears the Lead Legion scout symbol of the X-Acto blade on his chest, and the alchemical symbol for lead on his massive belt buckle.

As tradition demands, his Bolt Pistol bears markings for all kills made with it, in this case, 11.

The Scout bearing number 3 has been given the honour of wielding the squad's heavy weapon, a Heavy Bolter in this particular case. This venerable weapon is a relic of the chapter and proudly displays its kill markings; 7 vehicles and 23 enemies. It also bears an Imperial Aquilla as an honour marking for enduring effective fire under combat conditions.

The Scout is further armed with his standard issue Bolt Pistol, sporting 3 kill stripes.

The following scout, bearing number 4 on his knee pad, has been allowed to carry a brand new Bolt Gun into battle, to whet the weapon's spirit's thirst for heretic blood. In this scout's hands, it has already issued the Emperor's wrath onto two enemies.

He has rounded out his armament with a rather ornate Combat Knife, no doubt issued to him for acts of bravery.

The final scout in the squad, bearing number 5, brings a particularly effective close quarters loadout of a Shotgun and a Combat Knife. The Shotgun is brutally  effective against groups of enemies, often resulting in massive kill counts, as is evident from the gun's impressive 22 kill markings.

This scout also sports a crude tattoo of the Imperial Eagle on the side of his head, probably acquired before his induction into the Lead Legion. However; it is still a mark of pride.

Like all of his Scout brethren, he wears two gold ear studs. Only after they have been initiated as full Battle Brothers, will they be allowed to shed these trinkets, to indicate that they are now capable of exchanging all of their gold for lead.

And finally, here is the squad in action. They find themselves in quite a pickle, as their Patrol is Lost in the jungle, and their search for a certain Escape Pod has stalled, as they are being beset from all sides by Lurkers in the undergrowth...

Yes; another WIP project finally completed! :)

These look great and I love the Lead Legion idea! The next Space Marine I paint will definitely be a member (no promises about when that will be, but the intention is there...)

I would be a bit nervous about getting the insignia wrong though - there appears to be more detailed info on the appearance of this chapter than there is on most historical forces!

Thanks guys!

These sculpts are still pretty good, despite being decades old, and I had a lot of fun with them.

...there appears to be more detailed info on the appearance of this chapter than there is on most historical forces!

So true; that's what you get when a bunch of wargamers get to invent a unit; they're all so read up on military history, you'll get a complete history and background, famous commanders, battle honours and distinctions, uniforms, heraldry etc. Hey; it's what we do... lol

Totally forgot about this. I've still got my techmarine somewhere  ???

Well, being locked down has its pros and cons, and even though it has unexpectedly turned out to be a quite stressful period, I did find myself some time to actually do some painting!

I first did another 20 Necron Warriors for my OOP all metal Necron army. But more on those later, as I still need to take the time to take pictures of them.

Then I did my D&D character for our new online RPG campaign, set in Eberron; a Warforged Paladin. But same story there... ::)

And yesterday I finished a bunch I had already started a thread on, here on the LAF (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=113802.0), but obviously never finished; my Death Guard squad for Kill Team.

The theme seemed morbidly appropriate, and I wanted something to really go to town on after the Necron assembly line, so off the shelf of shame they came.

And what an absolute blast they were to paint!

I did most of the work with washes and glazes, as those techniques seemed the most appropriate, considering the subject matter and the look I was aiming for.

In the end I found these guys to be the most enjoyable painting project in ages; it feels like forever since I really got into my painting, focussing and doing sittings of many hours at a time.

Yes, I'm really happy with how they turned out, and I'm actually considering doing up a small 40K army of them now!

So here they are; the plasma gunner is my absolute favourite...  8)

You're on a roll dude.
Just think of all the gaming we can do when this is over.
I've had some supersparklyspace-elves waiting for some kill-team action for a while now and, with all the scenery I've been building of late, have plenty of stuff for them to fight your pussballs over.

Cool to see everything you've been finishing.

Waay back in 2012, Hasslefree did a small sculpting competition, where contestants were sent a bare Hasslefree dolly, and they could then use that dolly as the basis for their entry. I jumped to the occasion, and entered with my own creation; the Night Nurse from Hell.

I actually had to resculpt part of the face, which had a neutral expression, so I could give her a smile. Because initially, I had been aiming for a representation of this depiction of the main character from Robotech Southern Cross; Dana Sterling (in one episode, the mecha squad commander dons a nurse's uniform in order to reach a hospitalized enemy pilot who was under guard IIRC).

However, my sculpting skills being what they were, the envisioned smile became more of an evil smirk, so I reset my goals and turned her into the sidekick of some sort of evil  doctor, or something like that. But I guess the tagline might still apply ;)

Not surprisingly, I did not even come close to winning, because the field was just filled with the most awesome of sculpts! But one of the perks of competing, was the fact that every one of the (castable) miniatures in the contest would be cast, and each participant would get one of each sculpt. The winner's sculpt would also be included in Hasslefree's standard catalogue, which was truly awesome!

I opted to get a few more of my own sculpt. I mean this was my first ever moulded and cast miniature, so I wanted plenty of spares. Especially since the original was damaged in the moulding process, so this was the only chance to get the sculpt.

But things being as they are, when I finally received my sculpts, they were inspected, shown around locally, and then stored, because of other projects taking front seat.

A couple of years later, I finally decided to paint one of them up, as a bit of a surprise for my wife, who was still a nurse herself at the time. But again, the project (as small as it was!) ended up on the WIP shelf, and has remained there for many, many years. I sometimes picked it up again, but for some reason I could not get into the flow of the miniature, and after a very short attempt, she would end back up in her spot on the WIP shelf again.

But this evening, after (yet more) sanding of more components of my first Imperial Knight, I just picked her up again and finished her. And all it took was highlighting her shoes and doing the rim of the base! I have no clue as to why I did not finish her a long time ago; she had been untouched in this state for at least a year (probably more)... ::)

But here we are, finally.

I found that the often interrupted paintjob is certainly not my best. I'm ok with the colour choice alright, but the execution does leave something to be desired. Also, the casting had some damage to the right side of the face, meaning that along the way, I decided to turn those into scars, as if she had her eye clawed out in the past by an unhappy patient perhaps?

I don't know if this feature is unique to this specific miniature, or if all of the casts have it. I need to check my bare metal spares for that.

All in all though, I'm happy now that nine years after the fact, I have finally painted my creation... :)

Cheers guys :)

Almost 4 years to the dot, I posted this mech in a WIP state, accompanying a squad of DWAN Corporate Troopers I had just finished (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=104442.msg1298944#msg1298944).

And this week, I decided to put it out of its misery and finish its paintjob, once and for all.

It actually took me longer than I had expected (dang, there's a lot of edge highlighting on this thing ::) ), but I'm pretty happy with the result.

I not only applied the decals I had printed for it back when, but I also raided the decals box, and came up with several suitable ex-aviation decals, that worked really well on the mech. And I even made sure I had two extra sets I put aside, because I have two more Firetoads to convert and paint to go with this one...

'After painting the Humans from my 3rd ed Bloodbowl set and playing a game with them, it was clear that they were in desperate need of some backup in the form of a couple of star players, because they could not hold their own against pretty much any team (except perhaps my Goblins lol ).

So I quickly put Griff Oberwald and The Mighty Zug on my painting table. But, as happens most of the time, other projects took prescedent, and they sat in my WIP cabinet for more than 3 years, untouched.

And obviously, Bloodbowl was not played in this time.

But for some reason, I decided to do them up a couple of weeks ago. So I stripped them (they had respectively a black undercoat and a badly stripped previous job on them), cleaned some remaining mould lines, based them and undercoated them. White this time.

And because I had made the decals when I painted the basic team, I had 4 star player decals left, one of which a rather big one.

So naturally I had to get me Morg 'n Torg as well, as he was the other star player allowed to the Human team.

He arrived quickly, and I gave him the same treatment as the other two in one afternoon, and started painting on the trio that evening.

It took a while, since painting time is at a premium these days, but I finally finished them off yesterday morning.

So here they are, after a 3 year hiatus:

(http://www.d1-games.com/ForumPics/Gaming/BloodBowl/Humans/Humans-Star01.jpg) (http://www.d1-games.com/ForumPics/Gaming/BloodBowl/Humans/Humans-Star02.jpg) (http://www.d1-games.com/ForumPics/Gaming/BloodBowl/Humans/Humans-Star03.jpg)

And here's the entire bunch together for their first team picture :D

The only one still missing is Hoshi Komi. I know he's actually 2nd ed., but I have the model and I converted his stats and abilities to 3rd. I mean; a Kendoka/Ninja player in the team is just too cool not to be able to take, right?

Too bad I couldn't find the model when I started on these boys, because by rights he should have been included in the queue. Perhaps in another 3 years eh... ::)

You're further along with them than my planned dark elf conversion. Best I could do was open the boxes and look at the sprues.

Ok, so technically, this guy was never abandoned; it was a prepainted miniature that I got only last week, but I didn't want to start an entire new thread just for this little fella...  ::)

He started out as a prepainted Raven Guard, but now he's a Black Templar. from basecoating the mini in black till completion really only took a couple of hours, but it was a fun little side-project, and now it will probably sit beneath my monitor at work. I mean; it's not as if he would even see actual battle...  lol

Another group of miniature that has been languishing in limbo for many years: prepped, based, undercoated but never actually painted. This time I took on a trio of original Necromunda Milliasaurs.

But what kicked them off was the grub-like monster I bought at Poldercon this Sunday. I saw it, and realized it would be a very good match with said Milliasaurs. I kind of liked the exaggerated features, and it being Reaper Bones, it was really cheap too, so I picked it up.

I had the day off on Monday, and no obligations, so I took them on immediately. This must be a new record for me; the Reaper grub was bought and then painted the very next day! In contrast; those Milliasaurs had been in my posession since uni, so well over 20 years... ::)

This was another quick and easy paintjob, but I'm still pleased with the results. Well worth the afternoon. The only thing I didn't do in the one sitting was basing them, which I did yesterday evening. I also varnished hem, but overdid it a tad and some areas are now a bit satin. I will redo the matt spray later on though.

So, firstly, here are the original Milliasaurs:

Here's their big relative:

And finally, here they are in a nice familiy portait:

I imagine the Milliasaurs to be hatchlings, with parts of their rock hard egg-shell still clinging to their bodies, as extra protection in this early stage. The larger grub is an older sibling, which has shed the egg-shell remains and is growing to mature dimensions before possibly cocooning. Not many live to this stage, and one can only shiver at the thought of what it will eventually turn into...

On the table, after again not so long a time actually, is one I have been wanting to paint for a very long time: a Rogue Trader Ambull.

I did this one mostly with washes and glazes; only the claws, teeth and eyes were painted in layers. This was also my first time using Contrast paint. It served as the basic brown, and I glazed over that with different colours to get a colourful nineties impression, without being too garish. This is a subterranean beast after all.

Oh; first time using zenithal undercoating too. And I must admit this works really well with the contrast/wash/glaze techniques... :)

Cheers guys; much appreciated :)

Like previously mentioned; I used a medium brown as a base over a zenithal undercoat. I then glazed over this with purple, turquoise and a dark orange in specific areas; purple for the 'softer' areas on the inside of the arms, legs and belly, turquoise for the protrusions of the carapace and the dark orange for the scales on the back and lower legs (and apparently also on the 'cables' on the carapace).

It's a fun way of painting I must say, and I will be using it more in the future :)

OK, so I have actually been studying hard for a test required for the licence required to perform my job, which has to be renewed every five years. And each time it's a bit of a nerve wracking experience.

I had scheduled this afternoon to do a practice test and I actually finished early. So with about 1.5 hours to kill before having to collect my daughter from daycare, I decided that enough was enough and a bit of relaxation was in order.

Then my eyes fell on a set of four Urghuls (sp?) I had snatched off a local auction site for next to nothing and were sitting idly on my desk. They were already glued to their bases and undercoated grey, ready to be painted (so they're actually adopted abandoned paintjobs, these ;) ). And I came up with a wacky challenge for myself. I would paint them all in one hour's time! The models are simple, lend themselves well to washing and drybrushing, and not many colours  are required.

Now, I'm not the most prolific or fast painter at all, so this was an interesting way to push myself a bit (without going over the top; this was supposed to be fun after all). So I set the clock and went to work. After the initial wash of olive green over the grey, I ran upstairs to fetch my wife's hairdryer, because washes take forever to dry without.

This helped a great deal and in no time (well; one hour's time ;P ) they were done, including basing, which took almost as long as the entire painting proces (PVA does not dry very fast, even with a blowdryer...)

And here they are. I reposed some of the arms with the help of the hot setting on the hairdryer halfway painting, but other than that, I did nothing special. They're not prize-winners, but they're perfectly serviceable and I learned I can actually paint really fast :)

Which is nice.

They came out very, especially when you consider they only took an hour!

About two months ago, I needed to paint a small unit of named character miniatures (5) for a small event I was going to participate in. And of course I then chose to start an entirely different project instead, because apparently, that's how I work.

So instead of 5 The Drowned Earth miniatures (which even included a minigun toting gorilla FFS!), I found myself really needing to paint a 'simpler' project; an entire regiment of Bloodletters. Yeah, I know... ::)

I bought these about 10 years or so ago; as usual it was a second hand bargain, and they actually came with an MDF movement tray!

They were, however, not complete. Several arms and weapons were missing, and I had previously started on them, fitting the bodies that were lacking their weapons and hands with GW orc choppas, plastic rod and even a huge beastman axe that fit the bill. I had also based them, and that's where these bois stalled and were relegated to box-duty for the better part of a decade.

And now obviously was the perfect time for them to come out and play.
Do they fit into any army I currently have? No.
Do I have any purpose for them at all at this time? No.

Which I think is why I felt the urge to paint them all of a sudden; avoidance tactics at their finest for sure  ::)

I decided I did not want to spend long on them and with all the Youtube crazes and funny techniques doing the rounds I decided to give those a go. Kind of.

I did a black primer and a white zenithal spray, and then did the skintones with a red from the Armypainter Speedpaint range. That was not very pretty, but I did manage to plow on. Turns out I burnt out on them really quickly, and that's why it took a long time to finish them. I forced myself to keep going and this weekend, they were finally finished.

It's a combination of the speedpaint basecoat and regular washing and layering, all at a very brisk pace. I call this technique the Smack Twat, and if there's enough interest I suppose I will start my own Youtube channel and you can all become my patreons!  ;D lol

Joking aside though: these minis fought me every step of the way. I happen to have a smattering of each of the four Bloodletter iterations that GW has produced over the years, and these are by far the most fiddly and painter unfriendly and I'm glad they're finally done, even when the results are nothing to write home about..

Took me long enough for a quick distraction/side project...

So; on to the pics:

All of them on the movement tray

All of them without the tray. This is actually quite handy; I can now use them for both WHFB (or equivalent) and 40K (or equivalent). I even took this into account when basing them.

I base all of my scifi minis in the same style: a barren wasteland type of base, with some dead vegetation, and I do the same for my fantasy miniatures: a more verdant type of base, with both green static grass and mixed coloured flocking.

So I did their individual bases in the scifi theme, and the tray in the fantasy theme. Works really well together too :)

And what's that black and red stuff on the tray you ask? In a nod to the White Dwarf battlereports of yesteryear, I paint every movement tray of my fantasy units with their banner, so they can be easily identified on the field of battle, even when most of the unit has died already.

Truth be told; most of the times the tray will be removed long before it will be completely visible, but I like the idea, even when I'm the only one who knows (and now you lot too, obviously ;) ).

This one got a Khorne symbol, which was complicated a bit by the circular openings of the tray (and the very thick paintjobglob underneath which I could not remove); all my other movement trays simply have a full square to paint unit symbols on, like this Night Goblin one:

But I digress...

The more astute (or obsessed) amongst you might have noticed that the unit is 15 daemons strong, but the tray has 16 slots!

When I started out, I did not care about the one missing individual, but the more the unit neared completion, the more I realized I did not want to do this again, not even with just one miniature and the missing slot was kind of bugging me at this point.

So, instead of going onto the web and sourcing one additional Bloodletter and painting it exactly like its colleagues, as any responsible general would do, I did not. Instead I decided, after they were done, to create a simple unit filler of a single base: a pile of skulls with a Khorne symbol above it.

And this is what I came up with in about 30 frantic minutes: a framework of sprue cut-offs, a banner pole consisting of some 40K bits and plastic rod, a layer of greenstuff over the sprue bits and a few dozen skulls pressed into it.

It still needs paint, obviously, but this should be a really simple affair, and I'm actually quite chuffed with how it came out. And it can double as an objective counter too!

The painting, basing and pile of skulls all look great. For me, though, the highlight of the post was your description of the process that took you to the end point. I’m pretty sure some coffee ended up on my lap, by way of my nostrils! I can very much relate about being distractable and wandering anywhere except where the current project is supposed to be going. I appreciate knowing that others share the same… condition.

A while ago, two of my colleagues and I discovered that all three of us are active RPG players, and miniature painters to boot! Obviously, this has lead to much more enjoyable and interesting lunch conversations than any of us used to have before, and we can show off our latest painted minis as well.

All this lead to the plan to do a one-off RPG session together. At least once, to test the waters and the most vanilla system obviously is D&D (5th ed). So after randomly determining who would be the DM (by virtual dice rolls), we decided on a date and place, and the DM has even already sent out a small teaser introduction.

Considering this will be just a one-off, I was not going to build a character from the ground up, but rather I decided to use an online character creation tool, and had one ready in just 5 minutes; a 5th level Cleric with scale mail, a mace, shield and light crossbow. We could also roll on a table for some extra magical items, and I rolled a healing potion and a potion of firebreath.

Now obvioulsy, even when doing just a one-shot game, we would need miniatures to represent our characters. I could let the DM handle this, but where's the fun in that? Also; I wanted to have some fun painting something I would normally not do, so I went online to find the perfect miniature.

But oddly enough, pickings were rather thin, especially since I wanted a WYSIWYG mini for our first game. So I then went onto Hero Forge, created my own cleric from the ground up, and downloaded the STL. Two hours of printing later, and I had my character ready for painting!

This was my first time using the service and I must say, for what they do, they are excellent. The choices in race, physical appearance, clothing, armour, weapons and accessories are nigh endless. And then we haven't even touched upon the poseability, which also is almost limitless.

The only complaint I might have is the fact that the eventual STL and print are both noticeably less sharp than the initial render. NOt horribly so, but especially during painting, this became clear and some areas were a bit soft. It could of course be my slicer and printer, but I've never had this issue before...

Regardless; I'm pretty satisfied witht he result, and I feel I might do this again for later campaigns, even with my regular group!

This the render on Hero Forge:

And here's the end result, printed and painted:

Finally, here he is, distributing justice to some undead with his mace:

Let's hope he's as fearless in the game next week :D

That hero forge figure came out nice.  I am sure that the softer details are noticeable IRL but here it looks fine.

That sure is one sweet glamour shot.
Let's hear all about how he fared during the game when we meet up.
