Title: Ziggurat Minis from Lucid Eye
Post by: powerfrog99 on June 26, 2019, 06:14:15 AM
I am interested in these,  but unsure about quality and size compared to other minis.
Any kind of  experience from a fellow member with these minis will be appreciated 😊

Thanks Thomas

They are gorgeous, as all Lucid Eye are, but the price is very steep. Gulial is is a not-Goliath for the Sea Peoples/Philistines, thus he is indeed intended to be huge. The rest scale up very nicely w Foundry, Redoubt, and the North Star ancients.

Lucid Eye used to do a range of hoplites sculpted by Steve Saleh which were compatible with Foundry Greeks clearly has he did a lot of those as well.

Hi Thomas,                                                                                                                                                   I'm guessing your asking if the Lucid Eye figures will go with your War Gods figures? I have plenty of WarGods Greeks and bought some of the LE Atlanteans to see the same thing. I glued my LE figures straight to a slotta base without taking off the cast on  base. The regular troopers are slightly taller(maybe a mm) than a WG Spartan hoplite and maybe a tad less bulky. Overall not a bad fit.
BTW That not goliath is a must, ordered earlier tonight.
Pete

Yes Pete,

you got it perfectly right  ;)

The Wargods are the core of my fantasy ancient collection, which I complement with other manufacturers like Mythic Battles Pantheon. Ziggurat and the Northstar's sea people range are on my list as well.

Thanks for the detailed descripton  :)

cheers Thomas

If you do get any of the sea peoples let us know how they size up. Because they are a historical range he sculpted before the Lucid Eye I wasn't sure if they would be as big.

The North Star Sea People are older sculpts, but they are quite big, and match up perfectly w the Crocodile Mycenaeans I have. The new one pictured w Gulial.isnt even out yet, but I'm hoping  they are all compatible.

I had a lot of Foundry Greeks in my ancients army. I wouldnt say they are compatible with War Gods figures at all. Closest of the bunch were the Foundry Argonauts that fit ok. So what I'm saying is Lucid Eye Atlanteans are kind of in between Wargods and Foundry so fit with both but Wargods and Foundry are , IMHO, not compatible.

There are two ranges of Foundry Greeks that are very different sizes....

Yep and once again, IMHO ,neither one fit with Wargods figures. Heights might be close but bulk and style are just too far off for me. I'm not trying to be argumentative but reading some of the responses up thread,  I wanted Thomas to be aware that  there are differences of opinion on this . Wargods, Foundry, Northstar, Redoubt( which to be brutally honest are awful) and Lucid Eye do not ALL seamlessly match each other. In my opinion.

Steve Saleh is in a VERY productive phase at the moment. He is churning out a lot of beautiful figures. They are pricey, but they’re also superb. I have just bought several different batches, including the orang-utans, the Neolithics, and the ornate Meso-Americans. They’re pretty fabulous. A bit taller than some regular 28mm perhaps, but not so much as you’d really notice...

I'm not sure why the Ziggurat lne is so expensive. Is the scale bigger? I know Gulial is huge by design. I assumed that the Celtic line was higher price because they were a larger scale, but I'm not sure about these

The new mezo Americans are the same as the Ziggurat  packs. They're bigger than the jaguar warriors but I can't see what makes them that much more than say the Neanderthals.

Maybe because more effort went into doing all the detail?

Nope. The Atlanteans have as much detail as the Sea People and the Neolithics have less. Both are 12GBP and the Atlanteans are 7.50GBP. I guess it's whatver he can get for them. I bought the neolithics and the meso American's and probably will get the Sea People so..... o_o

I think Steve has looked at the prices of fantasy figure makers and companies like Hasslefree, and decided that if they can command prices of several pounds per figure, why shouldn’t he try it?
His figures obviously aren’t designed for big battalion style armies or ‘traditional’ wargamers who still think it’s a bit rich to charge more than the 9p a 25mm metal Hinchliffe figure cost when they started wargaming in the 70s.

To me, they are sufficiently beautifully done to justify the higher price tag. But I guess it comes down to whether you can afford it or not, and what the market is willing to pay.
If you’re used to buying small quantities of fantasy/ sci fi character figures at several pounds (or more) a pop, then paying four pounds per figure for a Lucid Eye miniature may feel like a bargain.
If you’re used to paying eight pounds for a pack of six Perry figures at ‘historical wargames’ prices, it’ll feel like a rip-off.

Interesting to note though, that Matthew Bickley’s equally gorgeous new Late Saxon huscarls are currently available on pre-order from Footsore at 25 pounds for the twelve figures - i.e. around 2 quid each rather than 4 quid each. Now when you get beautiful character figures of this superb quality at such a wide variation in price, that does set up some interesting challenges...

Exactly! But I love what Lucid Eye is doing, so I'll grumble quietly and keep buying! Probably my favorite minis company right now, and like I said before, eerily accurate in their ability to predict what I want!

I just got my order today. Yeah they're frickin beautiful. Going to get some Sea People when the second pack comes out, hopefully next week. Hope they fit with the Kadesh SPs I ordered from Northstar. I want to do a couple small units for Wargods and use Gulial as a harbinger.

Does someone really need to justify the price they're asking to anyone but themselves? As a customer, you have the right to buy from someone else.  :D

I agree the prices are high but they're also unique quality sculpts in a niche market. The guy gotta make his money somehow.

Thanks Thomas. The differences in the 2 sea people are definitely visible. The NS ones are just a slightly bigger  than the norm historical range. For my tolerance levels the Lucid Eye ones are close enough to WarGods to use together,  the more fantasy look of the sculpts helps tie them together IMO.
Still think I can slide a couple of the northstar guys in the unit I'm trying to build so not a total wash.

I had to stop gaming when I noticed how short my gaming buddies were!  lol

Thanks for the comparison pic. Are the 3 middle Lucid Eye?

Crocodile games were always going to be bigger than the others. I use the Ansar and Mycenaeans with my other figures regardless.

SeaPeople in the  pic go Lucid Eye, Northstar, LE, NS. I would think the LE figs would go with the Asar even better as they are less armored than the Olympus figure in the pic.
I think overall painted and on a table they're all going to work for me. I dont take close ups of my figures so the 2 ft rule should work.
I just hope Thomas isn't disappointed in my opinion/description  of the Lucid Eye figures.

I think the same for the LE fitting to the Asar  ;)
Just for a unit of 24 the price to pay is a bit too remarkable for me I think  :(
I have to think on that...

Agreed! I like the Cutting Edge line very much, and they have excellent Hebrews, but there is no mixing them w other 28mm -ish minis. CE is my favorite ancients line, but they are slim and realistically proportioned and true 28s.

I got the Lucid Eye pseudo-Meso-Americans out of their packets today and started working on them. I’ve had them for a while now.
Rather magnificent figures, but I have to say they come with a disappointing amount of flash and mould lines in difficult to get to places. A LOT of cleaning up required. Like a couple of hours on just seven figures - and there’s still some bits I can’t clean out to my satisfaction.
Annoying, for such superb sculpts and relatively pricey figures, to be so poorly cast. Although to be fair, I’ve got a lot of Lucid Eye figures now, and I haven’t had this problem with any of the others.
Hmmm...

Mine were also super clean, but I must say they were rather slow to dispatch the order, which might be due to high demand and this in turn could cause the moulds to wear out quicker. Just as an idea.

Just out of interest, I finally got round to painting my Lucid Eye Maxzans...
As mentioned they were a bit of a bugger to clean up, and a lot of hard work to paint - soooo much detail  lol
But they turned out pretty well.
