Title: Romanian T-4 medium tanks 1/56th (second tank added)
Post by: JamesValentine on July 01, 2019, 10:57:40 AM
Model: Rubicon 1/56th Panzer IV Ausf F/F1/G/H:
Absolutely beautiful kit. Some accessories off their 1/56th Panzer IV D/E.
Very much closer to a scale model than a wargame piece due to parts count and options.

Decals: Company B Romanian crosses:
...Absolute garbage...trash...avoid at all costs.
If anyone has good UK accessible recommended alternatives in 72nd, 56th and 48th scale please do let me know.

As I said elsewhere, nice.

What is the issue with the decals?

Fragile to the point they almost tear themselves apart.
They curl up so easily that you WILL damage them getting them flat.
You need to cut them to the exact shape so you cannot hold them as you apply them.
Extremely difficult to release from backing paper.
And for the size of the sheet they're bloody expensive.

Odd! I've used Company B's decals myself, in fact I commissioned a bespoke set for my Aden Vehicles. They do need to be cut close to the lettering/design but apart from that I had no significant problems with them and I'm one of those people who doesn't do the Micro-sol, Micro-set decal softener, decal adhesive thing. Maybe using those would help? To be honest I've had bigger problems with some Print Scale decals and Print Scale are a well known manufacturer of after market decals for the 1/72 and 1/35 modelling crowd.

Maybe you just got a bad batch?

Very nice model, I’ve used milicast 1/76 decals on 1/72 tanks and they are fine, they come with both Hungarian and Romanian on the same sheet, with a good selection of decals, roundels, crosses, number plates, unit markings etc

Very nice job, it really looks the business. Knowing next to nothing about the Romanians in World War Two (though my father has told me countless times that he knew King Michael, who was a customer of his), that red turret is very interesting. Was that a common thing with their tanks?

yeah I use the Humbrol decal fix all the time.
possibly a bad batch. but £7.50 for a bad batch is enough to make me think twice.

very nice stuff. I had heard of that company after expressing my concerns elsewhere.
I suppose the 76th scale will be ok for smaller areas on 56th scale tanks.

its just supposed to represent a replacement turret still in red primer.
the skirting is a sort of vain hope by the crew in covering it up until they get time to fix the colour.

Cracking work!  8)

I've always found after market decals to be woefully expensive for what they are, no matter the quality. Especially since I'm quite adept at using Photoshop and Illustrator and have an excellent printer; I simply make them myself.

Granted; such an initial setup would be completely disproportional when acquired just for creating decals, but when you already have the required tools, it's basically free! You obviously have a computer and just about everybody has a printer.  Graphic programs like The Gimp (a Photoshopish program) is free, and decal paper, either white or transparent costs at the most as much as the sheet you mentioned, but then you get 10 full sheets of A4...

Interesting. Is that an actual  real world example, or one you made up for the model? because it seems to me that slapping on a coat of paint, or even covering the turret with a tarp would be a lot quicker than attaching an entire skirt... ;)

There are these. You will need to scroll down to MI-110 for Romanian (and Hungarian). There are two sets.
http://www.minibits.net/i-94-decals/miscellaneous/ (http://www.minibits.net/i-94-decals/miscellaneous/)
The decals are robust, but need careful trimming as the ones I used are printed as a sheet rather than individual elements.

...silence. you ask too many questions XD

Nah its just made up...well replacement red parts were a thing...but the scenario is made up.
I just wanted something cool.

This is one of the three new Panzer IV kits.
This one is built from the F/F1/G/H kit.

The other two are the D/E and the J

From the pics, the decals look fine.  Its a shame the decals were crap.  I've bought over a dozen sets over the years and only had a few issues.  Something Micro-set will help with. You can always get some 1:35 scale decals.  Excluding the large obvious prints, the smaller prints work just fine.  Did that with some Hungarian and Finnish markings for 1:48 vehicles.  Last resort, make your own.  I've done that too.  Good luck!

Model:Rubicon 1/56th Panzer IV Ausf J
another great kit. Again some accessories off their 1/56th Panzer IV D/E.
Also very much closer to a scale model than a wargame piece due to parts count and options and etched steel.
small issue was the "frame" mounting. it goes under the mud skirts and can make fitting the tracks on afterwards very difficult if you paint them separately like I do.
its left them ever so slightly crooked by a degree or so. not noticeable on the table. but it is there.
this came out allot dirtier and grimy than I was aiming...but I don't mind.

The skirts look suitably lived in.

Thanks. Do the wheels still come as inner and outer (the outer attached to the tracks) as the original kit?

strangely its the inner that are attached and the outer you glue on.
this leaves a little bar between each wheel which you'd have to cut off if you want it to not be seen.
it doesn't bother me as you can hardly tell.
but still an odd choice.

Very nice, the mesh skirts came out very well, I like the way you've bent some of the panel corners - as there are so many pics of the skirts mangled in such a fashion :)

One of the great things about Rubicon is they have their assembly instructions on line.

Though a hazard to pick up.
Torn jagged thin metal is a nightmare XD
