Title: Kingdom of Domnonée, Dark ages, update 5/3 2021
Post by: bluewillow on July 12, 2019, 11:48:14 PM
I recently purchased a collection of dark age figures,  Footsore miniatures Welsh, Picts and Irish, some gripping beast and gripping beast plastics. The intention is to build dark age Breton kingdoms and their enemies, specifically the Goths-Alans, Franks, saxon then later Franks and Vikings.

I have read some interesting articles about some of the early kings after the departure of the Romans, the spread of Christianity, the arrival of the Goths and Alans, then the Franks, the coming of the Viking invaders, then the Normans.

I want to complete the Breton army first, then do Neustria/Anjou-Maine then Vikings,   so with a little thought I could build something to represent Breton Dark age army from the 5th century through to the 10thC  by swapping out a few units it could fight Goths, Alans, Late Romans, Franks, and later Vikings, Anjou-Maine and Normans. We have six major battlefield sites within a hours drive from late Roman through to the Norman conquest, and a further 11 battlefields within two hours. I plan to develop some tours and wargame events around these sites.

First off the desk some Kingdom of Domnomée skirmishers. The kingdom of Domnomée was formed by settlers from Britain in the late 4th and early 5th century, even sharing the same king at one time.

These figures represent the marshland people around currrent Mont Saint Michel to Dol de Bretagne.  11 bases to complete of  infantry and five bases of skirmishers, and possibly two heavy cavalry and three light cavalry will give me a good sized Impetus army.

Nice painting on those models. Now I just need to persuade my wife to join me on a trip to your hotel. The homepage looks amazing - even if I hadn’t found the wargaming subpage!

The idea was to be a relaxing destination for the partners, with the added option of regional history tours, battlefield tours and wargaming as add ons.

We have a lot of great medieval Châteaus all around us every 8 to 12 Klm, Mayenne (Maine) was the border between Normandy and Brittany.

Yes, I’ve seen that, and we actually are very tempted, but our newborn daughter (5 months) at the moment makes us go for nearer holiday destinations.
Anyway, it’s really nice what you created and kids grow up.

Been quite productive last week, back to back guests, but did manage some quality desk time to add to my Breton project. Going a little early with these, basically 5th century Goth allied noble cavalry.

The Goths and associated allied tribes (Alani and Sarmations) settled and controlled along the Loire from Orleans and its Upper tributaries of the Mayenne and Sarthe rivers (old Maine) and as Far East as Vannes Brittany during the first part of the 5th century. The Goths and Alans eventually allied with the Romans and served faithfully until the fall of the last Roman in Gaul in 486. The remaining tribes along the Loire allied with Clovis and some retreated into Brittany and Normandy.

Another unit off the desk Breton Coloni

This unit will also be able to double as Franks, Anjou-Maine or even Normans, based for Impetus.

These look great for sure. Interesting hair color choices there, they definitely fit the bill as barbarians and even early medieval northern-Europeans, or even expansion-era Spanish.

I try to paint two to four hours a day, plus it relates too my core business, of Wargame Holidays in France. Each of the units built relate to a local battlefield that can be toured then replayed on the tabletop. The dark age and ancient sites are quite elusive though as they are less well documented in English.

I have been bogged down for the last four weeks assembling plastic Celts, dark age Vikings, 100YW and Napoleonics, about 400 figures assembled and undercoated in orepearation of the winter painting season.

A Big desk clean up this morning, a vacuum of the workspace, brush washing and conditioning and then tonight back to painting desk for four hours.

A lot of winter projects to complete before next spring and the battlefield/history and wargame season begins again here at L'Hotel de Hercé.

First off the desk was another dark age spear block,  the unit only required basing to be completed, 5 other units should be completed tomorrow including a General command base.

A hive of activity on the desk this weekend as my mojo returns for painting, another Breton unit but for my Kingdom of Domnonée army. All metal from Footsore miniatures, with various shield makes, LBMS transfers and metal spears I made myself. Really easy to paint these and happy with the result. This base with its flag will designate an attached command on a stand for Impetus, although I prefer seperate commanders normally as I tend to get them mostly killed when attached!

Gripping beast plastic with a few Victrix head swaps, javelins and some mixed metal and plastic shields. Mix of hand painted and LBMS transfers.

Completed more light cavalry for my Kingdom of Domnonée army which spans from the 4th to the 11th century. These are great sculpts from Footsore miniatures. I am very happy with the light plaid pattern on two of the figures, not convinced with my red though.
The Bretons have a recorded history of light cavalry since the eastern invasion of Francia of the Goths/Alani in the early 5th century.

In the early 5th century the Romans settled the invading Alani (Sarmations) and Goths along the border with the Armoricans, the Notitia Dignitatum places them in Orleans, Poiters, Rennes, Alençon, Mayenne, Le Mans and Chartres. These areas became predominant Breton than Frank horse breeding areas in the 9th century and remained so up until the 19th century, 6 of the 8 French military light and heavy horse breeds come from the area).

John Wallace-Hadrill in his book Long Haired Kings, links the strength of the Breton feigned flight back to the Alani tactic in the 5th century, and the the overall use of heavy cavalry by the nobles. In several battles with the Franks, Vikings and Normans they used this tactic very successfully.

By the 8th century the Breton border had moved to the west from the modern Mayenne and Sarthe rivers (when Mayenne chateau was originally built) to the Vilane river, then back and forth for the next two centuries. Under Pepin the short, the Neustria (Anjou-Maine) Franks gained the territory, capturing the remaining Breton horse breeding areas almost entirely.  By the 11th century the Anjou-Maine cavalry were also using the tactic of feigned flight, most famously allied with William the Conqueror along with the Bretons knights using feigned flight tactic at the battle of Hastings to break the Saxon sheildwall.

:o :o How could I have missed this thread!

Congratulations, very well done!

Bretons 5th-11th C. is a long amount of time, they would look different from beginning to end. Also they probably didn't look "barbarian" at the beginning, more like so-called arthurians. There is some mention of them cutting their hair in the early period.

Thanks Patrice,

The earlier 5th century range of miniatures I have selected really is being built as an excuse to use my completed  late romans, Goths and also to do some authurian legend type games. As we know the home of Authur and Merlin is in Brittany!

The Bagaudae revolts from 404-17 is put down by Roman and Goth/Alan allies, with most of the fighting occurring in the north the roman city of Vorgium, particularly campaigning against the rebels in the Arrée mountains.

The majority of the army is being built for the 8th century unification of Brittany and fighting off the Franks and then the Vikings in the century 9th century.

King Riothamus King Arthur perhaps!

Riothamus (also spelled Riutimus or Riotimus) was a Breton-Romano military leader, and King of Brittany and possibly lands in England. He was active circa AD 470 and lead a army against the Goths in alliance with the Romans. He is called “King of the Bretons” by the 6th-century historian Jordanes but the extent of his realm is unclear. Some Arthurian scholars identify Riothamus as one of the possible sources of the legendary King Arthur.

The miniature is from the Footsore Miniatures 28mm Dark Age range

I prefer advanced, as it gives a more satisfactory game, particularly cavalry.
Basic is more of a competition rulesets, streamlined and set army lists.

Brittany (Armorican) had a Kingdom after the departure of the last Roman armies, putting up a good fight against the Franks. It technically lost its independent Kingdom status after the death of Salomon. At its height it controlled from the Sarthe to the ocean and north into the  Cotentin Peninsula.

Duke Conan II of Brittany put up a fight against the Normans invasion and is celebrated in the Bayeux tapestry. He was poisoned at Chateau Gontier in 1064. The Bretons like Maine and Anjou came under the influence of the Normans for the invasion of England in 1066.

Another unit of medieval Maine Infantry to defend against the Norman and Breton invasions in the 11th century. William the Conqueror and Conan of Brittany bring the two main opponents in the period.

Figures are from the plastic gripping beast dark Age set with some Victrix heads, and additional metal or plastic hand painted shields.

A generic dark age command off the desk, received these figures painted as a Christmas gift in the LAF Christmas care package

I am awaiting some tufts to arrive from Germany to complete some more bases of heavy infantry. 7 bases to go and the Breton army is complete, then onto the rest of the Franks and some more Vikings.

Liticiani-Letavi -Letavii-Letaniae, much conjecture surrounds them as to where they were located during the dark ages. Mentioned in a number ancient references with the field army of Aetius by Gregory of Tours. Mentioned by Jordannes at Challons with the Roman army of Gaul against the Huns and with Paulus and Riothamus defending Angers against the Goths,  some suggest they were a german tribe or perhaps even a welsh tribe.

Personally  I follow the thought train that a Celtic Godess is named Letavia and the mentions on name of a Latin  region in the Armorican peninsular in a large number of documents refers to the southern region of modern Pays de Loire as Letavi and the recent archeological find at Clisson near Nantes pointed toward a inscription on a partial tile of a military unit building with Let (waiting for the full report though, before fully drawing my bow) .

Looking at all of this I have settled that were either Auxilla or old veterans in Armorican peninsular, around Nantes and Angers defending the Breton Marshe under command of Riothamus.

Figures are 28mm Footsore miniatures, I have elected to depict the unit of skirmishers in pure white bleached tunics and shields, and for the following heavy infantry I will do the same. The current pandemic has allowed me to complete another two units which I will roll out over the next few days.

A new addition the first King of Brittany Morvan Lez-Breizh

Thought to be the first King of a unified Brittany in the Middle Ages, his rule last a short four years after the death of Charlemagne. The Bretons were always in Revolt against the Franks. The Breton lords particularly active along marcher borders raiding but were never really united. Morvan controlled an area in the north called Poher part of the Kingdom of Cornouaille close to the border of Domnonée, Bretagne. He had a fortified Castra/Palace it is thought at modern Carhaix-Plouguer, capital of old Poher.

The king figure is Morvan lez Breizh from Footsore, unsure of the priest but I did add the cross from a plastic set.
