Title: Agis Asian fantasy miniatures
Post by: Agis on July 13, 2019, 04:23:33 PM

I started a L5R campaign using ht new FFG rules recently. We used the Beginners game box and had a lot of fun. Consequently I had to get and paint some suitable minis. ;)
From left to right:
Doji Ren Courtier of the Crane Clan - I used a Samurai from the core Okko box and swapped the head for a female Statuesque mini head. I underlines his soft androgen Crane look.
Togashi Yoshi Tatooed Monk of the Dragon Clan -A Pathfinder Human Male Monk that is just painted in suitable Dragon colours.
Isawa Aki Shugenja of the Phoenix Clan -A Rising Sun boardgame mini in Phoenix colours.

Pretty good stuff, Agis! I like especially how those game pieces come out with suitable colors. Was a big fan of L5R when it came out. Does the new edition still have the D10 roll and keep mechanics?

More or less, the 5th ed uses custom dice like FFGs Star Wars RPG.
We liked it a lot.

Great looking figures.   :)

(Are you using washes on these?  If "yes" which make?)

I used the new citadel contrast paints/ washes.
In the end i overpainted most, it is still a considerable shortcut on some parts.
But i have no recipe, i was mostly experimenting.

Thanks.

Reason I ask, "large" monster model coming up   ::) and I was going to experiment with AP washes.

Don’t know that one, but if you enjoy it, it cannot be all bad. Rogukan certainly is a very nice genre blend.

Since years I am interested in Asian warfare. Ancient Japan and China was always a place special to my imagination. Asian warfare, especially Sun Tzu and the Bushido Code of honour had fascinated me for years. I have countless books about Samurai and Chinese armies.

As far as miniatures and miniature games are concerned I was less enthusiastic. That changed when Clan War was coming out back in the 90s. Great setting and - at that time - great minis. Unfortunately their later minis were less then good and all in all the game fumbled quite soon. I still like the game, but nobody is playing it. The setting itself is still one of my favourite Fantasy settings. I can only recommend the Clan War novels and the recent FFG RPG!

The good thing is that today we are spoiled with good new miniature ranges for almost every setting. For the domain of Fu Leng - the Shadowlands - the above undead Samurai from the great Kensai range are very fitting!
I use colours of the Unicorn clan, the next 5 will be Crab colours. Lost patrols...

More Kensai undead Samurai!

The group shot shows Kensai Samurai together with AEG Clan War minis from the 90s!
The big Oni in the back is still ne of my favourite Oni minis!

Three Yurei: one from the Okko core box, a Kogen from the great Kensai range and as a test a Nighthaunt from GW, they work well together IMO.

These all look wonderful and are very inspiring for me. I'm currently scouring eBay and Noble Knight for old Clan War miniatures, as well as Kensei and a few other ranges to put together a collection of Shadowlands denizens and a small party of Crab warriors. I'm planning to run Rangers of Shadow Deep, but set in Rokugan in Crab lands and the Shadowlands. There are a lot of easy crossovers with the story, so it'll just be a matter of substituting L5R style miniatures and terrain. Then my Crab warriors led by a Hiruma scout will venture out into the Shadowlands to reclaim their lost glory!

Hmm, interesting idea, is Rangers of Shadow Deep suited for the setting?

Very much so. The main story/campaign involves a spreading cursed land called the Shadow Deep, which is pretty much the same as the Shadowlands (source of undead, monsters, tainted land and animals). The setting in the book is more like medieval Europe, but it's a very easy swap over to Asian/Rokugani. And it's "miniatures agnostic", so you can use whatever minis you like, and swap out creature types. For instance, the main troops of the Shadow Deep are gnolls, but I'm substituting Shadowlands goblins. And instead of a Terror Wing (big demon), I'll be using an oni.

This is a fantastic idea! Could be just the excuse I need to get a few Samurai and their enemies from various sources...

I highly recommend this Oni, Agis. From Stonehaven Miniatures. He's HUGE (but made of resin) and nicely detailed:

Thanks for the link, considering the tons of Rising Sun Onis I already got, I will pass on this one!

Minicrate L5R is run that you can only come to the conclusion they do NOT want to sell!   ;)
