Well, there was a setting I didn't jump in recently, and now there's none.
With a new-found club in Milan there has been some interest in the feudal japan setting. For now, it's gonna be for Test of Honor, and we'll see what the future will bring (maybe a Japanese Round of Fire setting manual?)
Anyways, i've been fiddling with some basic 3D printed shapes for some very japanese elements, and all the rest is being done by hand.
First of all, the decorated shingles and some tatami tiles:

Which printed pretty well (I'm using a crappy Sparkmaker FHD, which has a lot of issues but WHEN prints, it prints nicely).

Both the prints have been immediately molded and cast in resin. Quite faster, and cheaper too. The roof in particular was assembled in a test piece:

Meanwhile, I tried sculpting a Tori out of balsa. Not perfect, but pretty fun to do.

With the cast tatami, i started building a raised platform.

And... that's it for now.
Please do comment and share your ideas for the next stuff. That's what makes me keep going! ^_^
Cheers,
Jack

I humbly admit that I'm not expert in Feudal Japan history.
But I like what I see and I admire your skill!
I'll be following this inspiring thread! Cheers!

You mad bugger! It all looks so damn good! :-*

Haha, thanks Mat! :) Let's see how it proceeds!

I'd feel obliged to take my shoes off before putting my models on that. Bloody marvellous like I already said.
-
Hah! :D thank you!
I did some tests with the same tomato pureč tube material used for the small Noren of the tatami platform. This time, i made a large Sashimono. It's basically... a flag.
Still, it came out pretty well imho!

The painting was quick (i didn't want to spend hours on a flag!) but effective too:

Made an order from Perry AND from Steel Fist. As soon as it'll get to me I will start playing with those! :)

Very nice work! :-*

Thanks! Hopefully these samurais will do their part in it as soon as i'll receive my copies. Doing the sashimonos myself, a bit less eccentric possibly.

More sashimonos for the upcoming samurais done.
And a small tutorial, which will be on the website soon. Until then, a few photos!

Great stuff Sangennaru!!!!!!!!!
As one of my other dreams is to one day build a Samurai castle, how did you do the roof tiles for the castle wall section you posted above? Is this a 3D design? If so, is there an STL for it that is available? I have searched Thingiverse but not found a lot of stuff for that...loads on Star Wars but that's another project (and thread! ;)

Cheers! Yes, it is indeed a 3d design. My printer has some Z-axis issues so far, but i'm planning to re-print it in a better quality soon. PM me and i'll happily share with you the file - your printing will be a good validation test.
I resin cast the roof once print, to save time.

That's the current model. Working on a slightly polished version, with angular tiles as well.

Thank you! :)
I should finish painting the tatami platform soon-ish. I have the first three unarmoured soldiers on the way!

As you can see from blog (tag samurai): http://pippoweb.blogspot.com/search/label/Samurai I got some houses, shrine etc., that need refurbishing too :-*

There are a few useful tutorials on my site for that!

Hopefully soon some updates. The orders from perry and Steel Fist are both late, let's see when they'll arrive!

Here I am with some updates!
I received 12 Ashigaru troops with yari from Perry Miniatures!
Lovely sculpts, although visibly old. The chunkyness is not a problem, but their sashimonos were definitely sub-par.
Here's a shot, compared with the ones i've been building recently.
..and in a couple of hours, I sculpted 12 brand new sashimonos, with a size more in line with the original pewter ones, and now they are all fancy and ready for paint!

Progresses on my samurais. More sashimono done, and four noble samurais from Steel Fist assembled with the custom flags.

Huh? 28mm samurais?

10mm, and not just samurai.

ok... I'm not sure how that's in topic?

Lovely building Sangennaru - little details are lovely.

Thank you! :)
A first samurai is done! The Steel Fist miniatures are excellent, but i had some mishaps with the accessories: A nodachi is being sent to me, but i realized that most of the figures have the side slot for a sheathed katana which is however not included.
Very happy with the sculpt though!

Don't be offended if he isn't - is he painted with inks or Contrast paints? Very deep colours.

Oh, definitely not. But I did use washes and glazed, as well as highlighting all the individual scales by brush.
Contrast paints are ok for miniatures with "enhanced details" like GW. Normal miniatures won't work nearly as well. :(

Great work on your latest samurai.
You have a lot of patience to be redoing all those sashimono!

Thanks! To me it was well worth it. It took me about 2-3 hours to re-do the 16 sashimonos. That's the time it takes to paint a samurai, roughly. After all, i'm improving the whole band by a lot at the cost of one extra miniature-painting-time. :)
I'm focusing on a few other projects at the moment, but i'm planning to jump back on this soon!

And since we're at it: i've been considering doing a set of japanese graveyard themed bases. Here's a rough concept:

Ideas?
