Title: Battle of Falkirk Muir 1746 Project
Post by: flags_of_war on July 16, 2019, 09:34:12 AM
The Battle of Falkirk Muir 1746. Fought on 17 January 1746 between the British Government Army led by Lt. General Henry Hawley and the Jacobite Army of The Bonnie Prince. Not the Bloodiest Battle but interesting to me due to the types of Units fielded, some of the actions that took place and also the chance that you can change the result by gaming it.

I have started my project using orbats for the Battle and the first regiment i have started painting is that of Clan MacDonald of Keppoch. Being a McDonald myself I'm always fascinated by the Gallant death of Keppoch and Culloden and have visited his stone on many occasions. Most of the Regiments that I'm building for this project can also be used for doing Culloden if i ever feel the need.

Too many. My aim is to get a game with them all on the table. I do have a few guys who would probably get involved by supporting the project with units.

Have you had a look at Reb.&Pats?
For the 'smaller stuff' I like the Black Powder variant of
Fistful Of Lead. Great for those skirmishes with just a few figures
but some nice scenery.

They are gorgeous as well mate. The main reason i did this range was because i wanted chunky figures for the period. I'm loving painting them just now and should be finished this week. The Dragoon is my fave of them all.

I had hoped to have completed the command stand of the MacDonald Clanrandald chaps this weekend but an illness bug seen to the end of that. Here are some pictures of the Royal Ecossais I completed.

The Regiment was formed a single Battalion by John Drummond of Perth on 1st August 1744. Their organisation was based on that of the Irish Regiments already in French service.

Small detachments of the Regiment were present at the Battle of Inverurie 23rd December 1745 and the Battle of Falkrik 17th February 1746, positioned in the Centre of the 2nd Line. They had roughly 100 men at Falkirk and the rest of the regiment remained at the Siege of Stirling Castle where along with the Irish Regiments they suffered many casualties.

They took part in the sieges of Fort Augustus and Fort William during March 1745. Culloden was the first time the entire battalion fought as one. During the campaign, they had suffered many casualties due to disease but were still able to muster 350 men at Culloden. They were not involved in the disastrous Highland charge Scotland but did cover the retreat of the Highland right wing.

Clan MacDonald of Clanranald

The Clan was present at Glenfinnan when the Prince raised his standard. The Princes first landed in Clanranald island of Eriskay. The Old Clan Chief Ranald was not fit to meet the Prince, so the meeting passed to his brother Alasdair MacDonald of Boisdale. Boisdale was cautious to support the Rising and told the Prince, “you had better go back and go home – and get ready more men, more ammunition, more money and more food”. To which the Prince replied, “I have come home, Boisdale”.

The Prince better support from the Young Clanranald Son, Ranald and he raised his men and were present at Glenfinnan. The clan was part of the Rising from the start to the finish and paid dearly for it with many of them dying or being transported.

At Falkirk, they were 350 strong and I have made them similar Keppoch’s with 3 bases and 18 figures. The Clan is being led by a Claymore wield young Colonel that I have designated at the Young Ranald using his Fathers Claymore used in the previous Risings. The Clan standard is tattered from the campaign and fighting.

Ranald was severely wounded at Culloden but managed to escape.

Been far too long since i updated this. With Kickstarters and my wife having a baby it's been on the back burner but I'm picking it up again. Managed to complete my Bonnie Prince for the battlefield and I have done him with two members of his Lifeguard. I used to of the command figures from the Royal Ecossais as they uniform was pretty much the same.

Nearly finished another base for my last MacDonald Regiment and then i might start a Regiment of the Government troops to break it up a little.
