Title: (UPDATE 8/12) Off world colonial family RV/Prospectors vehicle, WIP.
Post by: racm32 on July 19, 2019, 02:40:52 PM
After several good suggestions from some of you, and many more on facebook, I have started work on converting this old GI Joe sized toy into a 28mm scale off world colonial family RV/Prospectors vehicle.

What got me hooked on the idea of a family RV type vehicle was an idea to build a greenhouse in the roof:

I Started by cutting a chunk out of the top and constructing a partially recessed greenhouse. Potted plants will line the shelf on either side and a glass roof over top.

Here is my first attempt at a roof, but not sold on it yet. Just want something that looks about like this.

On the back will be a crane suspending a small ATV:

Yes; this is going to look ace! 8)

I love the entire bay you created. The ribs of the roof for it look to me a bit too thick, bit I like the idea. Perhaps you can alter the render a bit to make it thinner?

I totally agree that the ribs are to big. I just using free files for my 3d printer and haven't the skill to modify them very much yet. I have ordered some plasticard L beams which I'm confident I can shape into something a bit better scaled.

Looking good.
I have to admit it would depend on what was outside, if it was really hostile, I would want the frames to be thicker.

Progress update:

I found this lovely little ATV on Thingivers: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2422452 (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2422452) and printed it up.

The intent was to have it hooked up to the gantry on the back of the RV but I feel like it might be a bit too big now. Think I'll find something like a quad bike.

Speaking of the gantry I got some work done on it as well as a rear access, side access, and waist ports.

I actually like the size of the ATV compared to the overall RV.

For other vehicles you could consider something like this?

Thanks for the suggestion. I currently test printing some construction/mining robots and mechs as an option to hang off the back. I might print a bike to hang o  the side.
Started work on the cab. Raised the floor a tad and added a door. Floor is still a bit low so I'll add two raised seats. Not sure I'll leave any room for minis. Also printed up a bunch of consoles.
Will add some photos later.

Started a little bit of work on the cab. Using plasticard I raised the floor slightly and covered the old seats. Added a door leading inside as well. Printed up the control instruments as well as the two chairs that will go inside. Not sure what all to put on the back wall. Could just do more instruments, pipes, vents, posters... Your all's ideas would be appreciated there.

Also printed up a large construction/mining bot as a possibility to hand from the rear gantry. Since its supposed to be an RV/Prospecting rig it seemed to make sense to have some sort of deploy-able equipment. Thoughts?

Lastly I had orrigenly planned to have an external walkway leading down both sides, running from the hatches just behind the cabin all the way back. They also have roof access. Not sure how my first print test looks though. I had printed up a motor bike that could be stowed under neath one side and a retractable set of satires (not pictured) for the other. This would make the whole rig look wider and more open. Thoughts?

All looks great to me.

Depending on how you are envisioning the overall interior, I would put some communications equipment on the back wall, with maybe a third station in the cab (hard to tell if there is room) so that you have something like a command and control center for mining/salvage operations. Driver for the RV, remote pilot for your robot excavator (unmanned mining vehicle?), and a communicator/sensor operator to tie in the rest of the exterior operations.

The external walkways look good. Any consideration to doing those up at top deck height and then slinging storage container units under? I'm imagining you could even stow that bike under one of the walkways. The added bonus there is that you also get a much larger surface for figures topside. If you wanted to drop a second level of walkway below you could have a section of stair that drops to the ground like a NYC fire escape?

I really like the idea now of putting the platforms on the top level. I would have room for a second level mid way but, with railings, would not have room to place models on it. Sadly there is barley room in the cabin for the 2 chairs. I could put a com look setup behind one with the idea that the crew members could just swivel around to access it.

Been busy and construction is nearly complete. Added a platform around the top of the vehicle which drastically increase the play area. I had planned on putting it mid hull but this looked better. Additionally, now that I also added propellers, the layout makes more sense for an amphibious vehicle. I have nearly finished making the greenhouse roof though I could use your all's input again. Should I add clear plastic to the green house roof and cab windows for glass, or leave them empty?
I also plan on suspending the motorbike and other stowage underneath the platform.

Yup; windows need filling with something clear.

And is that a Space Marine bike the RV ran over? Somewhere, a chapter master is really pissed off now...  lol

When you put glazing into the roof panels make sure you put the one above the ladders into a sufficient hatch for roof access

Dont worry, I have thought of that. Someone had suggested on facebook that I use m8 glass screen protectors for the windows. I happen to have some but not sure how to cut it without it cracking since it is glass.

Maybe a tile cutter?

I actually like the area uncovered. It reminds me of something like a Logistics Escape Trunk (LET) in a submarine (sans top hatch).

You know, the typical sci-fi airlock. You need a place to stage heavy equipment without environmental suits, and then you need a way to cycle that space from "inside" to "outside." Sliding top hatch. Problem solved.  :D

Redesigned the green house roof. I could not build a convening door that fit around the ladder with the old design. The added benefit for the new design is an added shelf for more stuff. Also a higher roof means I could put some hanging plants. I'll also run a close line from the outside of the greenhouse to the railing.

Looking good. I like the idea of the rear access/escape hatch but I think it should be taller, full height; because this is the access  to the external platforms. Why would you want to have to struggle through a little hatch carrying equipment?

It's hard to see but on the deck, next to the greenhouse access, is a large hatch. Greenhouse hatch is more of a "service" access.

Well I'm actually a bit stuck. I'm all ready to start painting but I have very limited experience painting vehicles and never attempted one this size. I dont own an air-brush so its all spray paint and brush work for me. Not really sure how best to proceed.

yes and no. I had started practicing weathering techniques on some other smaller vehicles in preparation for painting. Unfortunately I got tasked with a deployment (I'm active duty US Air Force) and currently finishing up some quarantine prior to training followed by the deployment. I have been able to get some painting done while in quarantine but all large projects are on hold until early next year.
