Just dug up an old box from the cellar and recognized some weird gunk sticking to the side of the cans.
Has anyone experienced this? Is this stuff still usable?

I've never had the issue with Army Painter cans, but I once had a can of Citadel spray varnish leak at the bottom - a good part of the varnish had puddled around it and the propellant was gone. It looked similar to the one labelled "Anti Shine Matt Varnish", so I'd suspect they sprung a leak and the propellant forced out the acrylic paint.
Bit strange, though, that it happened to four different ones at the same time. Maybe a defective production batch of cans.
It's one of the reasons I only use the Grey Primer these days and go through them rather quickly (2 to 3 a year), and switched to brush-on varnish completely (except for some terrain applications).

I have had this happen to one of my oldest army painter cans as well, no clue why.
-
Had this once, but with a no name varnish. I don’t think you can use these anymore.
-
Thanks everyone. According to the print on the bottom these cans are from 2013, so I probably will dump them altogether before they ruin some minis.

It's the reason I stopped using Army Painter sprays, because the propellant leaked out and although I could feel a good 1/3 of the paint or varnish still sloshing around, it wouldn't come out. I don't know if this is still an issue or not.

Dito ... had this happen to all my Army Painter cans. Guess they stood around idle way too long. Switched to AK Interactive spray cans .. no issues there so far.

Why is it the expensive "high quality" hobby paints don't last but the cheap stuff goes on and on and on. I have 20 year old craft paint still useable and cheapy rattle can primer perhaps ten years old with no problems. And my storage areas can exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit in the summertime!

Branding.
They are not necessarily 'better paints' just because you pay more. You are often paying for the name on the can. But the can and indeed the contents can be identical to other non-branded or 'lesser' branded paints.
As an example - how many factories make spray paint in say the UK? I'd reckon maybe 3? (not checked) and yet i could probably name a dozen brands of spray paint in the UK.
So most of those brands are being made in the same factories. In fact you can see the similarities in things like can size and shape between brands.
A branded paint has a higher mark up because they are often advertised to a smaller market - how many people buy anything branded citadel because that's all they know or see?
SOME branded products are more expensive because the branded product is produced by a third party specialist, but the brand owner pays the supplier a premium NOT to sell the recipe to other wholesalers/retailers. I believe this is what GW now do with their paints since they left the comapny made the originals who then sold the rights to Coat D'Arms. That premium payment is of course passed on to you as the consumer. So in effect you are paying a premium for the brand TO PREVENT you from buying the same thing cheaper elsewhere!

Yup that's why I have stopped using them too

I've owned a ton of AP cans, and have it happen on occasion, though the few I've had have been a yellow (goopy propellant?) that comes out of the base of the can. However my collection is between 5-6 years old. I have maybe 20+ cans, and have had three or so do this. They were useable during the leak, but you could feel pressure was decreasing.
-
I didnt have that kind of a leak, but many times i realised that the propellant gas was gone while there was still a good amount of paint in the can.
All these were solved when i bought an airbrush. Then i got another, and another lol. But still the amount of money i saved on cans pretty much covers the cost of a decent airbrush.

I'm curious, I know the one that leaked for me was stored outside when it might have been freezing. How about you guys?
-
The ones I've had leak have definitely spent time in the garage - which here means freezing up to 110-120 degrees F. So it's possibly a consideration. I mean, it can't help, lol.

Mine were stored in in extra room within the apartment. So no freezing there.
