Title: Wacky Max 1968 (Vulture Squadron Hangar)
Post by: Cat on August 04, 2019, 02:43:17 PM
I managed to hold off for a couple of years in not buying into Maximillian 1934.  I was valiantly trying a whisper campaign of suggesting to other gaming buddies that they ought to gear up for it (and not add yet another project to my bench).  Then this spring CMON released their new Wacky Races board game with lovely 1/72-ish miniatures and I could resist no longer.

Conversion work has begun on the vehicles.  Starting with the classic toon vehicles as base models, I'm going for an upgunned Wacky Max 1968 look, not the full-blown post-apoc image of the [outstanding] Wacky Raceland comic.

Also appearing will be kitbashed Tom Slick crossover vehicles.  And even more kitbashing fun for special event card appearances by Vulture Squadron; when the pigeon of omen appears, mayhem will erupt in the skies and woe betide those caught below when they try to stop that pigeon.  Having a pigeon fly over your car is more dangerous than you might think.

First off the workbench are two versions of the Buzz Wagon for Rufus Roughcut and Sawtooth.  A standard 1/4 ton model, and an extended 3/4 ton version with room for several of Sawtooth's cousins to wield a harpoon gun.

I've already seen these on the facebook, lovely stuff! Going to be a wacky race of the best sorts! I think you will find Max'34 does great for the kind of game you want.

I'm working on finishing up the Buggy class vehicles first to start running small games as work proceeds on the grand fleet for big convention games.  The theme for TotalCon next February here in Massachusetts is Saturday Morning Cartoons!
=^,^=

Next off the bench are Penelope Pitstop in the Compact Pussycat, and her twin sister Pandora Pitstop in the [unattested] Compact Ground Rattler.  Pandora, who has sibling issues, appears in the new Wacky Races (2017) series playing on Boomerang.  She also gets a bunny companion to help with the rear firing machine gun, one of the more wayward of the Flopsy Bunnies who ran away to join the Wacky Races.

1968 vintage cartoons are quite a sexist lot, so I'm stretching to bring in as many female characters as I can.  Tom Slick is a good help here: Gertie Growler, Marigold, and Sepulchra will all get to join the races this time.

Rounding out the Wacky Races' Buggy class are the Slag Brothers in the Boulder Mobile.  The Boulder Mobile Sport Coupe is the standard buggy size.  They also get an optional extended Sport Phaeton in the Jalopy class.  The Slag Brothers really wanted a flame thrower; but trying one out, they discovered that a front-firing flamethrower on a race car is not at all a good idea.  Once their hair grew back, they started work on banging out the Phaeton.  Shotguns are also useful for banging each other on the head of course.

The Boulder Mobile Sport Phaeton is still in progress.  The remnants of the middle tires will be removed after the two halves are pinned and glued together.  Both of versions will get tire upgrades.

Also on the workbench right now are the initial rough cuttings to make Tom Slick's Thunderbolt Grease Slapper and Zilly's flying machine.

When all the cutting down and bashing is done, the Thunderbolt Grease Slapper conversion will be the first of the Buggy class vehicles from Tom Slick.

Many of the planned Tom Slick vehicles will be very cut-down bashings of old Citgo promotional plastic Classic Cars.  Vulture Squadron will be relatively easy work from 1/72 WW1 planes.

Great stuff.  Used some of the characters from Wacky Races as the basis for the cars I converted for Mad Maximillian too...although I used diecast vehicles from ebay to create them.

Just finished up modelling work on both the Sport Coupe and Sport Phaeton versions of the Boulder Mobile; and the first of the spectators, the Slag Brothers' biggest fan, Captain Caveman!  I'll also add the Teen Angels to the cheering crew when I start work on the more pedestrian spectators.

The same Rock Slag figure drives either the Sport Phaeton or the Sport Coupe, different poses for Gravel Slag are fitted to each one.  Even with back-to-back seating in the Phaeton, a shotgun is still a fine over the shoulder sibling smacker.  Inside the Sport Phaeton: Rock needed a side console up front to help keep him securely seated in the driver's seat without Gravel helping to lock him in place; and with the extended rear compartment, Slag can finally have a flamethrower.

Wacky Max work has been proceeding along slowly.  Working on several other projects, and minor cold/sinus things making my eyes malfunction every other week this winter is impacting all of them, grr.

But at long last the first 4 buggy class cars, and two optional long-bed jalopies have hit the gaming table; and the Boulder Mobile doesn't use fancey-dancey caltrops like other cars might, just some pointy rocks will do just fine for the Slag Brothers:

The pointy rocks are from a bag of scenic Rock Talus.

The spikey metal ones are a mix of the largest Star Washers and Conical Rivets from Tichy Train Group.  I whittled a point on the end of each rod, doing the bulk of the carving while they were still on the sprue for ease of handling.

Finally getting back to Wacky Max after quite a hiatus.  Haven't run the game since TotalCon the month before the Pandemic hit.  Looking forward to running a couple of games at Huzzah and possibly Anime Boston next month!

Have a couple of cars on the workbench right now that will be ready shortly.

In the meanwhile, here are some terrain and bits I had finished in time for the last outing.

There are laser cut turning widgets that can come bundled with the rule book (left in the photo).  Things From The Basement also makes some (right) — I really like these because the are a thinner profile.

I made Shrinky Dink speed tokens and spray painted the backs gloss white after they were shrunk.  The shooting phase goes much quicker with a token by each car so everyone doesn't have to keep asking what speed every car is at.

This terrain painting for the Barrel Canyon race is patterned after that in the "Why Oh Why Wyoming" Wacky Races episode.  A friend printed out the hills and cacti for me.  In true Hanna-Barbera style, each piece type is painted identically, and there are only 4 arrangements of cactus stands.  So as you drive along, the terrain keeps repeating.

Fortunately, I could use the pre-painted cars from the CMON boardgame on the table top for any car that I haven't yet finished my custom mod for.  That allowed me to focus more time on the terrain in the run-up to TotalCon; and now it's time to catch up on modding more cars (and adding more terrain bits).

Post by: Cat on April 27, 2022, 04:03:31 PM
Working on the first two special guest stars to join the cast, Rat & Trixie Fink.  These are Kinder Surprise hot rods that work quite well as is, they just needed a Fink style gear shift, weapons, and a replacement steering wheel (which conveniently came with the crew figures).

The Finks themselves are modified from the figure that comes with Ral Partha Europe's Green Baron Goblin Rocket Cart.  This figure had the perfect big toothy grin for the job!

R.F. gets a pintel mounted 2 cm KwK 30 from a 1/76 German scout car.  Trixie gets a rack of 6 rocket launchers on the roof of her pick-up.

First outing for them will be at Huzzah! next month.

Course markers are ready for varnishing.  Dice start rolling at Huzzah this Thursday night!

The banners are sheet styrene cemented onto a plastic tube; heated over a candle and bent into gentle furls.  Brass tube and wires for poles.

Picked up 3D printed barrels from EBay.  Went with 1/64 55 gallon drums which make nice big 85 gallon drums in 1/72.  Filled with sand and a dab of PVA for a cement filling.  85 gallons of cement weighs in at about 1700 pounds, so these should stand up reasonably well to the rigours of the race.

Thanks, after the yellow paint dried, I did the outlining and detailing with the trusty .005 Micron Art Pen.

For overall ease and speed of play, I find Max34 and Gaslands pretty comparable.  As I mentioned in the other thread, it was the turning widget with the full freedom of turning that won me over to using these rules.  As an added bonus, the widget also works superbly for checking arcs of fire too.

The mad run up prepping for Huzzah continues!

The pre-painted cars from the CMON's Wacky Races Deluxe Edition work well enough to fill in for Wacky Max while I continue upgrading unpainted versions with improved wheels, crew, and of course added guns.

Next upgrade ready to roll is Peter Perfect in the Turbo Terrific with some serious off-road capable wheels, twin front machine guns, and a pair of rear firing rockets nestled amongst the rear pipes.

I added the short pipes for a smoke generator, but may wind up using that hard point for thematic extra engine armour instead.  [ponder, ponder]

Title: Re: Wacky Max 1968 (Bulletproof Bomb & Army Surplus Special WIPs)
Post by: Cat on May 23, 2022, 12:20:50 AM
The model for the Bulletproof Bomb didn't need much modification.  Just had to remove, thin down, and glue in again the seat backs to allow room for the figures in the rear seats (the original model includes all 7 tiny gangsters sitting in the front seat as they tend to do). The mugs have spread out here to provide covering fire all around.

Also had to remove the roof until final assembly, that will be the only way to position all the figures inside after they're painted.

For the more typical figures in these cars I use 20mm figures.  For the tommy-gun toting Ant Hill Mob, 15mm Rebel Minis' gangster figures worked perfectly.

The Army Surplus Special needed some work to add more functional looking treads and wheels.  Had to lengthen the chassis — spliced on an extra hood and bit of back body from another donor model.  Made the treads as short as I could from an old Roco Sherman, and the turret is from a Roco M8 scout car.  Front wheels and back end detail panels from a 1/72 US halftrack.

I like the longer image for this, looks like a proper racing halftrack that could challenge Rommel's Rod to a drag race!

Post by: Cat on June 23, 2022, 04:42:29 AM
Vulture Squadron Hangar from Dastardly & Muttley In Their Flying Machines is done and work continues to progress on converting an Albatros D.III into Zilly's Flying Machine (started 3 years ago in the beforetimes).

The O scale Plasticville Hangar provides a fair representation of the actual building with just a little modification.  The footprint on this is notoriously tiny for O scale, but works quite nicely with stubby 1/72 Flying machines.

Comic book lettering from the 1990s provided the basis for the Comic Sans font, and that was the lettering style in use back to 1969 and earlier — this made printing out the sign super easy and historically accurate!

The watchtower came from a 1/76 Fujimi diorama kit.  Interior detailing is parts left over from aircraft that are contributing other pieces to various flying machines and some scratch-built furnishings, including a carved black telephone for the all-important calls from the General.
