Title: Fantasy swashbuckling project in 1/72 scale (baroque zombies)
Post by: M.P. on August 11, 2019, 01:50:32 AM
I'm working on a fantasy-historical project set in the 17th century Prague during the reign of Rudolph II. Think of it as a more "historical" version of Mordheim (and maybe Malifaux), which draws most of its inspiration from Andrzej Sapkowski's hussite trilogy and Hammer's folk horror movies.

I'm planning few factions like cabbalists, alchemists, Matthias' spies (future emperor), utracvists, diabolists etc. (historical minis for this project are in other thread: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=116677.0 )
Apart from human factions there'll be few non-human ones like werewolves, frogmen, beastmen.

Now I'd like to show you my frogmen

Thank you :).

They are from Spellcrow's Argatoria 10mm Line.

Very cool project. Great idea using smaller scale miniatures for diminutive frogmen.

Have you seen the game Anno Domini 1666? It is set in Vienna in 1666, but could still at a minimum provide lots of great miniatures for your project when it hits retail. It also includes fantasy elements like alchemy, etc.

Thank you :).

I do know AD1666, I'm waiting for my kickstarter pledge :). I cannot source minis from that game because my project is in1/72 scale :).  Also my project is set in the early 17th century, which in terms of fashion differed much from the latter half.

I have never been scared by cultists.  This one certainly looks 'armless enough.

In a meanatime I've started working on my dark Young from reaper bones. Unfortunately the cast has some serious issues with mouldlines and misalignment of moulds during casting, which will take a lot of time to resculpt parts of tentacles and body.

I've done that one about four times now for various customers.  The tentacle mold lines are easy to remove with a hobby knife, most of the gaps on assembly are trivial to fill with putty.  The leg moldlines are harder to clean, and (as you can see in his image) Reaper thought its was a good idea to stick their name and copyright right on one of the thighs - he's already puttied it over.  But at $8 for a fig that barely fits on a 120mm base, it's worth the minor effort involved.

Title: Re: Fantasy stuff for my XVIIth century swashbuckling project
Post by: Hobgoblin on March 20, 2020, 12:23:47 PM
Yes - though I'm on a bit of a hiatus at the moment. I picked up some 1/72 gladiators and nomads in Italy in February, but haven't done much more than wash them as yet.

My primary use for 1/72 is to have portable stuff to take on work trips and other jaunts that can be rolled into gaming weekends with some old friends. Obviously, there aren't going to be any of those for a while, so I'm concentrating mainly on 28mm for now, for games with the kids.

But I will be getting back into 1/72 before too long. It's my preferred scale for RPGs and "unit-based" skirmishes, and I have lots of cavalry that I want to get painted up for Dragon Rampant, etc.

Devil with a pitchfork, whip, kriegsmesser etc. I'm struggling with the temptation to add to the project the Hell as depicted by Bosch and Aligheri for some dungeoncrawl experience :).

What a great project. I love projects which are slightly off the cuff and show utmost dedication by the painter/sculptor. Of course it helps that I'm very fond of 17th century gaming. :D

Out of all these sculpts for some reason the Dwarf leader has got to be my favourite. The way the detailling is done and the overall style just looks great. Of course the folk horror objective marker is a great piece in itself.

Great stuff; keep us updated!

Here's most of my minis for this project (except cthulhu mythos stuff and toadlings). I've decided I'll stick to the "historically accurate" fantastic creatures (so devils, golem, basilisk, drowned ones, stillborn ghosts etc.).

Amazing miniature!

He reminds me of a suit of armour in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Museum - really brutal and functional-looking, especially the helmet:

Still no idea how to depict Grogu.

A Caesar 1/72 goblin might be a starting point.

I want him to be hmm... historically accurate (at least a bit). I was thinking about searching for a genetic/metabolic disorder, which might give a similar look (for example my renaissance Chewbacca will suffer from hypertrychosis - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertrichosis).

A Caesar 1/72 goblin might be a starting point.

I recently got a 3d printed not-Grogu with my order from Perikles.be
It’s a 3d printer service that sells very good prints. The Grogu would also be small enough for 20mm and you could mod him with your magnificent green stuff skills.

Into what, you ask?

Well to stay tru to your setting, a race of wizards fighting oppression would ring a bell with the Jews. But you already have them and it’s impossible to model a specific kid.

That’s why I would make him a little demon child, something like Hellboy...with horns maybe. That way the inquisition would have a reason to get him.

And, thank you, yes. This is the way!

Really like the beastmen, but also really interesting to see the terrain pieces you‘ve been working upon.

Have you got an end goal in mind, or are you following your muse on this one?

Thank you for your kind words  :). I always have problem with terrain - I need to paint it :p. Another thing is I am a very slow at terrain creation, because I like to have a well researched stuff in terms of historical accuracy, so I am working now from the beginning on my n-iteration of Prague façades.

As for the goals and when do I end my projects. Minis for my prague project are finished, they just need some paintjob. The ottoman stuff is for a spin-off project set in the early XVIIth century Cairo for which I'm currently finishing warbands (Ottoman, Arab, Mameluke and Persian) and some civilians. At least I've got my terrains for Cairo ready :).

All my projects are set in the early XVIIth century so I can pretty easily justify any additions :).

Well, I'm saving some money to commission moulds for my eastern European  minis (mainly polish/ruthenian/moldavian/transylvanian nobility/peasantry/burghers) and publish a narrative-driven swashbuckling game (rules are in Polish, but I'm slowly working on an abridged english version with Prague as a setting; 1-10 minis, usually 3-4, 40cmx40cm board for most of the scenarios). I'm working on this project since 2013 and probably it will take another year or so to be finished.

When I make mythological beasts for this project I'm trying to stick to the contemporary depictions of any given monster.

In this case I only have got this:

Yeah, that's the illustration I thought you were working off, which doesn't give you a huge amount of detail! A wendigo illustration might give you some better anatomical guidelines, onto which you can sculpt the unique details of that fella. Looks very heraldic doesn't it?
