Today I played through a one shot of Marvels RPG. I was not a fan of the rules but feel like I'd really enjoy a set of rules that lets you play as a custom or Marvel/DC hero against minions and villains in a more tradition table top style (less RPG). Would love any suggestions you all have.

I have searched a bit myself. There is Knight Model Batman (older DC and Marvel) and Monolith's Batman, Marvel Crisis Protocol is coming later this year and there is the grandaddy of Supes skirmish games Heroclix. I was looking for a Frostgrave type game - bring your own minis - since I did not care for KM rules and Heroclix has a TON to remember and constantly changing during the game and the whole collectable aspect. I have a bunch of old Heroclix and they are cheap so a bring your own mini type game is perfect for me - I finally found Super Mission Force (or the older Super Force) and it looks exactly like what I wanted! I can use my Heroclix and get more, create the characters and go nuts.

Thanks, Cusm! I hope it scratches the itch. It does for me, but I am biased of course. ;D

Super System 1st, 2nd, 3rd or even 4th edition should give you the game you are looking for.
I have a review of 4th Edition here:

I also have a couple of battle reports here:

and

Hopefully this helps!
