I've never been a huge fan of Ancients, I've always thought of it as "Dudes in cotton stabbing each other" but with the release of SPQR its given me an incentive to give it a go. I'm reading a bit of Mary Beards SPQR to try and learn some more about Ancient Rome since I'm only aware of what my basic education taught me
Anyway. Atm I've got some Ceasarian Romans, some Imperial Romans and some Gauls.

Heres the Ceasarian Romans. Painted quickly with contrast paints I think they look good enough for what they are. I'm a bit annoyed I messed up assembly so I can't get an actual "Optio".

That is a great book.
I also recommend Adrian Goldsworthy for a more Military view of things.

The...Optio(?) of my Warband, the Warlord Resin model. Fairly nice if a bit of a pain to paint.

Nicely done. I think he is of a higher rank than Optio. The Optio was second in command of a Century. The ribbons across his torso, I think, mark his as a tribune or higher rank. Also sword worn on left puts him as a Centurion or higher. The rank and file wore the gladius on the right.

Hi Jet engine, I like the look of the figures, thinking of trying this myself, what colours did you use for the Chain mail and Bronze?

The skin colour on these look more like Nubians . The Numidians were the Berber population of Numidia (present-day Algeria and in a smaller part of Tunisia). I recommend you use a more Mediterranean skin colour than Sudanese.

Chainmail is army painter gunmetal with a liberal splash of army painter dark tone, whilst the Bronze is also Army painter

Second the recommendation. Many of them are lighter-skinned than south Europeans (though of course a nomad or soldier does pick up a suntan; but even Celts would be darkened in that case). Measured against European standards, Berbers look very close to home - more like Sicilians than Nigerians.

Finished up my Republicans with a second hero, a Consul on horse. A Gripping Beast mini, I attempted to follow the image on the packet but it's not the best result.
