Title: LEAD PAINTERS' LEAGUE 13 - GENERAL DISCUSSION
Post by: Captain Blood on August 28, 2019, 10:23:29 PM
Elk101 has nobly volunteered to run season 13 of the Lead Painters' League.

This is a grand old feature of this forum, and we hope plenty of members will take part (up to a maximum of 50 participants).

We are providing a one month lead in - which should give time to get three teams ready.

A team is 5 figures or models. To take part you have to send in your first three teams (well, a picture of each) for the first three rounds.

After that, you're effectively getting a further four weeks before you have to start sending in replacement teams for subsequent rounds, 4 - 10.

There are 10 rounds in total, per the original format of LPLs 1 - 11.

The league will run from 29th September, across October and November, and into the first week of December. Wrapping up well before Christmas.

All the details, rules etc are fulsomely explained on the rules thread: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=119159.0

Please use this thread for general discussion, questions, etc.

Thanks  :)

Unless I get in to one of my painting slumps again I plan to enter as well.  :)

I'm in as one of the new guys.  Nothing like Gothic Horror for the first round to take me immeadiately out of my comfort zone. :-)

Yep. Me too. I'm in, and struggling to find something in the stash that would count as gothic horror...

Good excuse for some new figures then!  lol

They would be complete orphans. I haven't gamed any 'horror' or similar, for about 10 years, and I have no intention of doing so any time soon, so a bit of a waste of my painting time unfortunately.

The theme is just for extra points and not mandatory, you can enter what you want.  :)

Yes, it's just the theme bonus you'd miss out on, there is no obligation at all to stick to the themes.

Well, I'm feeling pretty good.  I ordered some figures for the Gothic challenge yesterday, and going through my unpainted stuff this morning, I have enough to pull together six more teams.  Time to start shopping for something to fill those last three slots while my wife isn't watching.

I too ordered some more Gothic horror reinforcements.  Everything else will be coming from the lead pile.

Bravo! I do think the LPL is a wonderful thing. Great to see her sailing again. It's very hard work, but also very fulfilling. I hope everyone who is considering entering does give it a try. Go on!

Good luck, everyone!

But good luck to all participants.  :D

Well, now I have all ~10 teams figured out, and 3-4 backups from an army I need to finish. I got sidetracked from my Teutonic Lion Rampant force when the ...gentleman... who had access to non-English websites and books ...critiqued... my color choices, but we are playing LR again, so back to the grind, I say!  If I'm not feeling one of my other choices, I'll try to get them finished.

Awesome! LPL is back in the classic (best!) format! Thanks for running this, Elk101!

I've missed the last too-many LPL rounds but am going to try to get organized for this one. I have a lot of ECW figures that can act as non-themed round entries and probably enough lead mountain stuff to fill the rest in...

Great to get this up and running again.
I would love to give it a go.  The only problems is over much of that time I will be away on holiday or recovering from shoulder surgery (my dominant arm).
Still, I can at least enjoy looking at all the great entries.

Does Chthulu pass for Gothic Horror these days? Or are they separate beasts?

From the Rules thread:
I'd be fine with some Cthulhu related beasties. I played Cthulhu by Gaslight so the vibe can be very 'Gothic Horror'.

I might actually finish this time  :o

The timing works a little too perfectly for me not to involve myself. I'm in!

Making it a higher priority to source all entries from the lead pile than going all-in on the theme rounds, but will strive to get as close as I can with what I have. Fun!
Title: Re: LEAD PAINTERS' LEAGUE 13 - GENERAL DISCUSSION
Post by: Neldoreth on September 06, 2019, 05:19:25 PM
I am so tempted to jump into this... I even just bought two different 'teams' for the theme rounds... I still may not be in for this one, but if I can paint up five teams by the entry deadline, then I will be in!

In any case, I'm looking forward to the amazing work that everyone else will be producing for the contest, it's always amazing to watch it come together! Thanks to the organizers for putting in the effort to get it going again.

thanks

You should have received an email as of this morning. It was an email address set up specifically for the LPL and when I tried to check it to see if there were any entries, it had been locked for security! All sorted now though (I hope!). Apologies about that.

I too would like to ask if you have received my entries, and if so: if the first one fits the theme enough to count or not.
Thank you!

Oh, was everyone supposed to have received an email this morning then? As I didn't either, but assumed the reference to it above was only if one had already submitted teams.

As it is I did get the confirmation that my photos were in ok, so assume cyberspace is working as it should do!

Just sent my first 3 entries, and have another full round plus 5 minis for 3 different other rounds painted so it's looking good, also just noticed we get an extra week after round 4, which is good, was hoping to get a bit more paining done today, but Japanese class started again last week and I pretty much spend all day doing homework, just hoping I can juggle both in the next few weeks

My starters are in (and retrieved from spam city).  One totally new team and two really old new teams rescued from the back of the paining table. Now to get in gear preparing the rest!  My plan is to paint nothing newer than 2017 this LPL.

I'm hoping to make the deadline.  Only 1 of the 5 figures I ordered for the first round have arrived in the mail. :-(  I'm going to start working on a backup team, though they won't meet the theme.  Finished one team the other day, and another today.  Looking forward to participating!

I think the time between the announcement and the starting deadline was a bit shorter this year than previous years, about a month, while LPL 11 and 12 had about a month and a half, LPL10 had more than 2 months, I was lucky I didn't have to order anything for round 1, because I definitely would have been in trouble otherwise

3 Rounds sent -Usual stress and bad photography last night

Onward now paint brush to the fore if I want to get the figures I want to include in some sets and get all the sets done

Decisions decisions as to what will look best with a plain background - probably turn out to be the figures I've used in first 3 rounds

Either way, I'm excited to see what other LAFers do this year! It will be awesome no doubt :D

Oh, my photos are crap.  The goal is to participate - I have no illusions that I can be a competitor with say, Cap'n Blood, Matthias, Michi, or Benbow.  I can, however, meet a goal, and be a finisher.

Same goal for me - paint more new teams while enjoying the magnificent teams that Cap'n Blood, Matthias, Michi, Benbow and others post.  Maybe the Prof will return this year with his excellent crowd scenes?

Pretty much my approach too  :D
However having participated in the last few LPLs it's certainly inspired me to start trying to assemble more terrain, background, and 'stuff' for my projects rather than just figures, which can only be a good thing.

But I don't see the point posting pics that are bad. Anyway I managed to take some serviceable photos in daylight, though the sky is cloudy, so not much better...

Don't be ridiculous Ogrob

3 of my 15 miniatures were little wet during photo session and one was very wet because I had to retouch the wash to any details be visible in the photo  lol o_o :o

Oh, I have no illusions about winning or even placing high  lol, I just want to be in it at least once  :)
But I don't see the point posting pics that are bad. Anyway I managed to take some serviceable photos in daylight, though the sky is cloudy, so not much better...
Entries sent in for the first three rounds. Now I have three weeks to finish the next two.

I'm just not a photographer, so they are always a struggle.

This is my third, and I had 1 drop halfway through, so we'll see how it goes!

Unfortunately, I had to skip this one too. :? Maybe the preparation period after the announcement was slightly shorter this time? Admittedly some hints were dropped already in advance. However, I had one major event last weekend, which required a fair amount of preparation and I just couldn't find the time and attention for two large tasks simultaneously. That left only this week for a possible LPL sprint, but that just didn't happen. Nothing prepared in advance and other activities take about three full evenings per week right now. And a trip abroad will steal a couple of weeks in their entirety later this autumn. All in all, it would have been hopeless. Maybe technically possible but absolutely no fun nor healthy. The rules and themes were perfectly fine, though, so I definitely won't blame the league, only my own schedules.

Of course, after LPL 11 (2½ years ago?) I promised to prepare some buffer in advance, perfectly aware of the fact that it has never happened, nor will happen this time either. lol (And it didn't. :-I )

I'll try to vote and comment, though. I know from experience that getting even a tiny bit of feedback can be highly motivating and give a reason for the months of borderline insane slaving. :)

Also, I forgot to post my top tips again. (Another thing I promised to do, yet failed as well.) Anyway, the very short version is "minis first". That is, if in doubt or forced to make compromises, always spend your time on the minis themselves and ensure that they can be seen.

Spending half of the week on terrain, leaving no time to paint the faces or to fix random slips? Often a bad idea. A deep layout which might feel epic but puts half of the minis out of focus? A bad idea. Such a busy/wide/deep scene that it's hard to spot the minis? (Too small in the photo, not enough contrast, background louder than the minis...) Another bad idea. I've made each and every one of those mistakes so I speak from experience. Some top finishers manage to deliver the whole package with bells and whistles, feeding the myth that this is a scene building contest, but most likely their painting game is already top notch, and they somehow manage to build a sweet scene on top of that. If you can't do both, spend your effort on the minis and keep the rest simple. The scene may be a tie-breaker, but very rarely will it save a half-bothered team. (A damn good story may buy you extra votes even if the team isn't exactly top notch, but it's a rare sight and hard to pull off.)

Also try to reserve a few hours for photography and basic editing alone. I've failed there too - time for just one shoot and then noticing in the editor that the minis are blocking each other, lighting is all wrong, no good focus can be achieved, hair/grass/dust has managed to slip in and so on. Sometimes it turned out just fine by sheer luck, sometimes it definitely didn't. People simply won't vote for something they cannot see. Harsh but true. As a rule of thumb, the entry is only as strong as its weakest link, and photography is one of those links. Not even the best paint job will save you if the photo is a blur or almost black. It's a skill that anyone can learn, often by trial and error, but it takes its time. Reserve time for two tries and learn something every week. :)

That's all. Let's see if I finally manage to clean up my painting table and get something done as sort of "shadow entries". Right now I feel lazy, useless and guilty. ::) Good luck to everyone who actually made it.

There are some great entries.  I feel both completely outclassed, and totally inspired at the same time!  Hopefully this means that I'll not only clean up some of my backlog of miniatures, but I'll force myself to work on my painting skills some more.  I think I had at least one "I need to learn how to do that" moment in each photo that I looked at.

Off to my painting cave to work on entry four....

Lots of good advice there, Dolmot.

I was wondering if you were going to make it - it's a shame you're not in the hunt, but please don't feel lazy, useless and guilty lol

While in essence I agree with Dolmot's tips (I don't think there is much to argue with there) it's also my experience that a well-thought out scene can give you the edge against someone whose painting level is not too different to your own. Obviously, I don't think average paint-jobs are ever going to beat top-notch ones, but I think a good appealing scene can get your nose in front against a painter who is roughly at your level. In fact making such scenes is my favourite part of participating in the LPL (it sure ain't all the painting!), and seeing them is my favourite part of following it. I even think I managed to hoodwink the voting public on a few occasions last time and squeeze myself past better-painted figures with that method.

I guess there's no accounting for taste. Anyway, glad to see the old girl back again. Good luck, everyone!

In any case, looking forward to an amazing LPL this year, good luck everyone!

Hm...you can choose to see a difference between these two if you really want to. I won't try to give numeric values to "a tie", "not too different", "roughly at your level" and "well-thought out scene", nor go into hyperboles here. I think you get the main point anyway. :)

OK, I'll give you some numeric values after all. If the entry (as in "the team") is only 80% ready, just keep polishing that and try to figure out a simple backup setting. If it's 90% ready and you still have free time, start considering something fancy but still finish the team too. (However, I won't try to tell what "80%" exactly means. lol ) Minis first.

The good old "band photo" brick wall saved me countless times. It's a scene, alright, and no issues whatsoever with depth, weird shadows or being too busy. That one I could shoot and edit in 30 minutes, in comparison to the hours of work that an elaborate scene and its shooting would take, all things considered. (Sometimes doubled when the first version just didn't work out, no matter what, and had to be scrapped.) If you're lucky enough to have something passable that can be re-used, that's a solid plan B too.

My worst scheduling ever was spending a full week cleaning and undercoating a pile of terrain bits, which never made it to any entries because I didn't have any time to actually paint them. ::) "Do or do not. But do not faff." -Yoda

I have an end of year tradition of painting up the various figures and scenery bits that were intended for LPL scenes but didn't get finished in time to include. No primed figures enter the new year!

It's never too early to start for next year and it drives you on to get more figures painted - 7 rounds are usually open and 3 have special bonuses available but you don't have to get the bonus.

Getting an error page whenever I vote right now. The site says I'm trying to vote on either a poll that doesn't exist, or a poll that I've already voted on.

But it isn't a huge problem, because despite what the message says, when I look at the page afterwards it actually has accepted my vote. It's just lying telling me it hasn't. Not a big deal, but I thought I ought to tell somebody about it.

Edit: Well, whatever it was, it seems to have gone. It's working as normal again now.

About a quarter of the final round 10 entries are in so far, but there's plenty of time to finish those paintjobs. As usual, if anyone is struggling with time, drop me a pm or email.

Good luck LPLers!

Round 10 has been sent over, undoubtedly the most figures I've ever put in a round.  Still a shame about my photographic skills.

And so the painting element has come to an end for this year but back onto all those projects I'm still part way through

Big thanks to Steve

My final entry is in as well.  A very productive LPL for me as I doubled my painted output for the year including some units I started last year.

Thanks again for running it Steve!  I appreciate all the inspiring work posted by everyone else as well.  Definitely helped keep me motivated seeing all the new teams.

OK, the LPL13 final round is now up. There's a great selection of entries within the overall 'Americas' theme. Despite the range of entries it's weird how some of the pairs have been thrown up by the spreadsheet.

Thank you to all the painters in this year's LPL and all those who voted. There's only ever a relatively small number of the membership actually vote in these things, but it is appreciated.

Well done to everyone for sticking with what is usually about 3 months of painting and photography.

Cheers!

Thank you again for having made it possible, Elk! I'm very happy to have joined in and made it all the way through without skipping a week. Funny how just buckling down and getting paint on some of the lead mountain can give such a boost in hobby engagement. I feel invincible! Maybe I'll do a "paint two for every one I buy" thing in the coming year :O

Even in last place, I'm very happy that I took part.  I got a ton painted compared to what I usually manage to finish, and I'm happy with the majority of them.  Hopefully the challenge will continue again next year.  I definitely would like to take part in another.

Big thanks to the organizer, and big thanks to the competitors.  It was awesome to see the variety of entries and the amazing skills of the folks on this forum.

Hey, everyone picked up a win in the tournament and the points are pretty tight throughout. The LPL is hard work so just entering and finishing is an achievement.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but I've left the final round polls open till Sunday morning. I'll shut them down then and tally the final points before announcing the results.

Likewise big thanks to Elk for running it.

Was glad it went ahead again, and hopefully there will be a League 14 too, always helps me get painting done and this year has got me out of a bit of morass with my ongoing projects, my C16th project is back up to full steam again, and every year the great photos of great figures is a bit more inspiration for me.

The LPL is always inspirational to me even when I can't participate.  Glad this year I was able too as I really cleared out the backlog on the painting table.  My only problem with the LPL is all the cool figures I didn't know I needed until I saw them are here.  ;D

I used it to finish some current projects (Star Wars Legion) and clean up some old figures who had never been finished (the Grenadier Headless Horseman and the last group of Pulp Figures Rocket Troopers).  Some of these had been languishing for decades. The Horseman was one of my first ever purchases through a mail-order catalog in 1980-something.  o_o
