Title: A piece of cheap cactus terrain
Post by: princeman on August 30, 2019, 10:28:42 PM
Today I put together a piece of terrain for my western games. Last week I found some artificial plants on clearance at Michael's for 80% off. Materials used - bottom of a pot topper (Michael's $5), 2 plastic cactus plants (Michael's $1 each), an old CD (free). Tools were a hot glue gun, wire cutters, duct tape and my Dremel.

Nice piece. I've been crafting from found materials myself lately. Yours is better.

She will love them when she sees them,
They will lose her if they follow,
And she only means to please them,
And her heart is full and hollow
Like a cactus tree,
And she's so busy being free.

As a stand alone, looks good.  Next to figures, looks kind of huge.  But if you are happy, that works.  Yes, there were huge cacti, the saguaro in particular.  I just don't think they looked quite like that.  Of course, I have a few over-scale cacti I expect to use in my games so who am I to talk!  :D

Thanks guys. As for the size I am working on the #2 piece by cutting them down to a more believable height.

Here is my second piece.

As someone who worked in the Sonoran desert, they don't look particularly accurate, but they look completely fine for Old West gaming, and even the first one is fine size-wise (the design is obviously off, but the size is completely fine).  Well within the confines of usefulness :D

A lot of Old West tables actually lack heavily in the greenery department, so I'm glad to see some pop up.

Round two is a vast improvement - especially in the height department in my opinion.  Yes, cacti could get quite tall but that first piece defies a certain believability whereas the second piece works great.  Good job.  Now you just need a score and two more.

Thanks for the comments! I am much happier with the second one too. I will probably rework the first one. Have enough material to make about 4 more pieces for a total of six.

Damn, my keyboard has a key or two that stick and if I do not spell check and review spacing this happens. Anyone know how to correct this in the title?
Elbows - how could I improve the composition?
Thanks,
Greg

Princeman, just use the modify button and I think that will allow you to change the title.  No worries, happens not only to the best of us but the rest of us, too.

Thanks Hal! I wish you could have been at Little Wars to see / play in my Magnificent Seven game. Plays very close to the movie, the original one with Yule Brenner. Fun time for young and old.
Take care, Greg

Pretty sure I have some of those plastic plants that you used for the smaller variety on the first piece. I had purchased them for use in Jungle bases, but cut up individually like that, they make rather convincing shrubs.  Nice work!
