Title: What figures suit 1930’s Japanese?
Post by: Tim Haslam on September 20, 2019, 03:30:03 PM
I’ve got a Chinese Warlord army I use for Bolt Action.
I was wondering what Japanese figures suit the invasion of China?
In bolt action you can field quite a large cavalry retinue. So suggestions for cavalry too, please?
Tsuba perhaps?

There's no cavalry, but Bob Murch's Pulp Figures includes a category for Japanese Naval Infantry:

IiRC Brigade games and/or Company B do some Japanese that might be suitable again Naval troops as well. They also do the Crossley armoured car with the twin MG.

EDIT: Yes it is Company B Naval Bgde

I've been trying to find 1930's Japanese for a while, and the pickings are pretty slim. As mentioned there are the Pulp Figures naval infantry.  You can also find tanks from Trenchworx and Company B.  There was a company called Turncoat Games that was making cavalry, but I'm not sure if they are trading anymore.  You could use the Copplestone Chinese as Manchukuo allies. Otherwise, I ended up just having to use the Warlord Japanese figures.

What section is the naval brigade under? I looked for a while and all I was able to find were the rail handcart which comes with an infantry squad (many sitting, of course), and some paratroops.

Short answer is none really.

Longer answer. It rather depends on when you are talking about. Company B did a rather unattractive range of Japanese Army troops in M98 uniforms and SNLF troops that would be suitable for later (post 1938) fighting in China. I’ve found the SNLF but can’t find the Army figures. IIRC there may have been some in M90 uniforms suitable for the early invasion of China. Of course Pulp also do SNLF or rather IJN landing parties for this period.

For anything pre-1930, it’s up to you. You are looking at the uniform with stand collar, pantaloons and puttees and peaked caps. The Copplestone Chinese are probably closest but the equipment is wrong. Another route, one I actually started and gave up, is a never released but none the less available range of 28mm Chinese from Eureka. Only a couple of useable poses but with the addition of plastic pouches and equipment from the Warlord Japanese plastic boxes and a little green stuff for peaked caps, you can come up with a fair proxy. A lot of work, very expensive and pose limited, which is why I gave up.

IIRC there was an article on WG’s site showing how to make greatcoated Japanese using their Japanese and Soviet boxes. You would still need to make your own headwear.

Unfortunately  Company  B website won't  allow me to link to a page but itis near the end of the infantry section.

Again all their troops are lumped in together no way to go straight to Japanese.

Love those Pulp figures.
Thanks for the input guys.
I was just thinking about a force to take on my Chinese army.
The Pulp figures are different to the Warlord ones which is what I was after.
Sadly very lacking in equipment and choice though.  :(

Are you referring to the SNLF troops? They're the only other ones I could find.

Yup SNLF would go well with the Crossley in a 1930's Shanghai force

Hard to judge the quality of the castings from the photos but I think they might.
Also the guns are dirt cheap  :-*

I was poking around the Brigade Games webstore and came across these intriguing entries:

http://brigadegames.3dcartstores.com/BG-2WWJ001-Japanese-Allied-Manuchukoan-Cavalry-Command-2_p_4857.html

http://brigadegames.3dcartstores.com/BG-2WWJ002-Japanese-Allied-Manuchukoan-Cavalry-Troopers-3_p_4858.html

They claim to be "Japanese Allied Manchukuoan Cavalry"  Regrettably, there are no photos, so I have no idea if they are any good.  Or if they can even stand in for Japanese!  On the same page, BG also has a big selection of WWII Mongolian infantry and cavalry.  Again, no photos :(  But one more option for you to consider.

I have to say I would not buy them either - other brigade games stuff yes but not that range

Agreed... Yesterday I saw pics from the range, and they seemed 15mm miniatures instead of 28mm :S

My choice would be the Pulp SNF figures, plus a Crossley armoured car. If you want to give them artillery support, the Pulp British or US naval deck crew with head changes (British WW2 helmets) would probably fit in nicely.

after reading this thread I decided to place an order for some of the Reiver castings the service was excellent and the shipping quite reasonable to Canada. the figures are good but not in the same league as Copplestone or Pulp fiig.s The main problem being the lack of facial detail, also the rifles seem a bit on the short side, size wise they match up with Pulp and Copplestone fine.Hopefully I'll have them finished soon and I'll try to get some pic.s up

Funny I was looking at their site yesterday and thinking of getting a couple of Jap guns and a mortar.
Don't suppose you ordered any of the guns?
