Title: Elysium Mercenary Dropship WIP Tutorial
Post by: Braz on September 30, 2019, 09:45:32 AM
Zrunelord recently reached out to get some pointers on making the mercenary dropship from Elysium. It just happens that I had planned to make one at some point and so from the back burner to front and centre.

Mine is scaled for 28mm so for 15mm scale down to 60-70%

Mostly medium weight chipboard, cereal card, bamboo skewers, 3mm hardboard and foamboard so far. As for the porousness of the materials, I will seal the whole thing in Modge-Podge before painting; works like a charm.
The model is built around a 3mm hardboard base and gives a solid foundation to mount rare-earth magnet or flight stand mount later.

My preliminary sketch. I often do several versions which I refine and clean it up when planning a model but seems I didn't or couldn't find the better versions. FYI, the scale on the sheet is 0.5 inch per square.

The 28mm templates in progress. I'm still working it out as I check my reference materials more; such as where the back wing will be placed and discovering that the door area is curved and recessed more - not sure if will do that or not.

Assembling the wing with a new template for the ribs and to set the correct angle. I am using 3mm hardboard for a rigid yet thin member. The wings were still too bendy for the wing length using other materials without making it too thick.

Where this is going. Just dry fitted
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/41/2880-240919084951-410101257.jpeg)

Looking at this pic, I realize I"m going to have to recess the door area.

Next post with more pics up shortly.
Cheers

Phase 2

Recessed the door area and curved the bottom. Decided to go with a closed body (door and rear hatch closed).

Here you can see the inside score marks so the chipboard will bend straight.  The line across the bottom indicates the limit of the bending.

The modified and new wing templates. You can see the differences with the first ones as the design progresses.  The templates  are with the doors cut out and the recessed area just indicated as it would become too flimsy otherwise. They are still evolving.

The front air intake looking things- not sure exactly what they are.
Just lots of layered alternating cardboard and chipboard.

And in place

Thanks everyone. Much appreciated.

Work on the doors and the front curved nose.

The rear ramp door
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/41/2880-300919092242-41110221.jpeg)

Doors in place. Front side armour panels added although not 100% pleased with them. Back winglets in place, again from 3mm hardboard for rigidity and strength which will get covered in card for details and more strength. The rear of the main fuselage built up and reinforced as it was quite wobbly without the foamboard bracing.

Templates for the roof top air flaps/vents and rear thrusters.

And dry-fitted the various parts to see how it is coming along overall.

A question Braz...
You're using foam as a spacer ... right? To keep it place until it hardens?

You're using foam as a spacer ... right? To keep it place until it hardens?
Z

No. Glued in place for extra support although not 100% necessary. Weight is negligible.

The side ladders templates. Gluing part in place on the lower portion and just marking the top. Using 1/4" staples for the rungs
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/41/2880-300919190142-41140325.jpeg)

The cramps in my hand...need a dremel.  :o Drilled the holes in both sides before adding the staples.

Using the popsicle/craft stick as a spacer so will all be at same depth. Using superglue to affix.

Ok Braz, support spacers.
I personally use foam board ones since it's sturdier.

Looking good.

You can also use this type of wire , saves you loads of time on ladders & fencing.

Thanks all.
@ Zrunelord. That's a great technique and foamboard would be easier to poke into but was going for a specific look on the dropship. Keep noticing changes I would make to get it closer to the original model then keep having to remind myself I am not building an exact replica. :P

Forward Engines Pods

Again a bunch of layering to create the the intakes then wrapped in strips of cardboard. Keeping in mind that cardboard has a natural direction it wants to bend when I cut out the strips.

Glued on the edge winglet and rear engine base. The foamboard is a little support I created as don't have enough hands.

Then attached to the forward wings.

Building up the engine internal support and figuring out the cowling. See the various iterations as I get closer to a shape that will fit. I added some chipboard reinforcements on one piece and will add a second layer to the cowling to stiffen it up.

Sharp sharp blades. Multiple shallow passes instead of one big cut. Care on the first cut and the subsequent passes will follow the first.  A good steel ruler.

If the curves on the doors/ramp, I drew some guide lines, then used a hole punch at each end and cut out the section in between.  I have a variety of punches - super useful.

Hey Steders,
If you are asking about the wire used as ladders & banisters.
I get it from the Ironmongers. They stock 3 sizes and are used to make chicken coops,
song bird cages etc.

They're made of galvanised soft iron wire so can be easily clipped & bent.
Hope this helps

Do make sure to use working gloves when handling the stuff. I had some nasty run-ins with chicken wire until I figured it out, clipped ends can be dangerously sharp.

Get the wire mesh at your DIY store. Good for ship railings and with the right size you can make some chairs from them too.

You don't have more info or pics of the tools you use?

As requested. These are pretty much the tools I've used on this build so far and the ones I use most often. The black X-Acto has the freshest sharpest blade which I transfer to the other X-Actos when they get a bit dull but are still useful.  I also have another steel ruler which is quite useful to have.

More tools I have or use fairly often. A few tools not shown: wood pencil (a bit blunt for scoring cardboard) toothpicks as applicators, and needle nose pliers and jewelers saw. I do have others about but that was what was on my desk and in reach.

Here you can see the steps of making those oval windows. You turn the punch upside down and then you can see the alignment lines on the cardboard and can place exactly where you want the hole to go.

Cladding for the wings. Using the blunt pencil to score the back of the cardboard to help get a straight line and I use the ruler also when bending it back.

The wings with the left side complete and the right still uncladded. Cutting a millimeter off the trapezoid on two sides allows the flaps to be separated a bit from the main wing - no need to etch panel lines. The cladding cleans up the wing, makes a rounded front and the creates the typical wing shape. It also strengthens the wing.

@Zrunelord
That is a nifty punch.

@gamer Mac
This is the 1/2" hex punch I have which I may have ordered from ebay but you can get on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sizzix-Paper-Hexagon-Holtz-Die-cut/dp/B00OL241MQ/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Sizzix+Paper+Hexagon&qid=1570302709&sr=8-1

I also have a 1" hex punch by Fiskars but it feels like the handle is going to snap off every time I use it so I would go with another brand. There seem to be a few on Amazon.

The square I have but may be prohibitive shipping across the pond. It has imperial and metric rulings.

That looks like a drag knife.
For those that are interested check out leather crafting tools. Also called a swivel knife. With a little pratice they are excellent for accurate cutting of all types of curves.

Just did a search on Amazon, this is a lovely piece of kit. Braz those star shaped wheels would be great for embossing rivets etc. And not expensive , I paid almost that much for a special plier.

Leather working tools can be a real treasure trove. I have a few.
The stitching punches (the ones in the bottom right of your picture) I use a lot for punching regularly spaced holes in styrene sheet and other materials.
The edge bevellers (Skivers) are also great for chamfering the edge of sheets - and they are lethally sharp too!

Mind you I think I have a tool fetish as I have a garage full of wood working tools as well... (thats my other hobby)

Love how the engine was developed & & built, like a perfect jigsaw puzzle.
Off course you have to make landing gear.
You could magnetise them in order to remove them when in flight.

There are so many useful tools and punches available. Thanks all for the info.
More cool tools to acquire...sigh.
Here is another leather tool to look at.  It will emboss several different sizes on one side and does nice recess holes on the other.

I remember that too. It was painted a desert camo pattern, with a SA airforce logo on the sides.

I think it was more boxy than this one, but I remember thinking it pretty cool too.

I believe there were some police droids in the thread as well.

And this may be stretch, but I somehow associate 6milPhil with it?  ???

Not wanting to steal anyone's thunder, but I dabbled a bit with Elysium back in 2013 (Gods, has it really been six years).

Photobucket killed my pics, too, but I've attached them below for reference.

Nowhere near as good as this one is promising to be, mind, and much more of a loose interpretation/inspiration. The bot concept might be of use to some, though.

@Chris  Thanks for sharing. Those are really nice and look the part. I've also converted some of the Copplestone Terminators.

@ Grimmnar   Will do. Just pulled the rest off PB so will start posting some soon but seem to have lost some due to corruption or mis-filing. Will try to dig out the originals.

And some build pics.

Built up the undercarriage. There is a piece of mdf/hardboard inside to make a super steady mount for  a magnet and/or drilling a hole for mounting on a flight stand.
Will figure out  a way to attach the landing gear too.

Looking at reference pics for something else and ended up having to do some surgery on the back wings.

Building up the wing pylons with multiple layers of cardboard on chipboard. The flaps are to ensure it is well connected and stays vertical.

Definitely.

Cladding for the rear tail assembly. This greatly strengthens the chipboard.

More cladding for the rear wings.

More rear wing structure. Parts, assembly and assembled.

Rear wing cladded, assembled and detailed. Needs a bit of greenstuff work.

Tail assembly and cladding. First iteration of the wings at the top; modified as needed once got to this phase of the build.   Made one from spare foamed pvc as a trial which likely will be used for a crashed ship.

Finally starting to assemble the various parts which has to be done in a certain order. Wings first then front roof, then tail and finally rear thruster/vent assembly.   I also managed to lose one of the pylon thrusters...no idea where it went. Going to have to build a new one but have the templates. Afterwards the roof and nose detailing...woohoo!

The crashed Bugatti. I would so make this differently today.   Have another pack of the Copplestone terminators waiting to be converted.

I use whatever I have at hand.

Thanks all.

One question, what kind of card are you using, looks like cereal box type.
I use whatever I have at hand.
Z

I mainly use cardboard from tissue boxes which is fairly thin, easy to cut and bends easily. All manufacturers are about the same so no specific brand. As soon as I realized this was my preferred cardboard, I started hoarding them. Yes in addition to the lead pile I have a cardboard one.  :D Tissue cardboard is about 1/3 the thickness of the chipboard I use which is Grafix medium weight chipboard.
https://www.amazon.ca/Grafix-CB81125-Chipboard-11-Inch-Natural/dp/B00161W6L8/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Grafix+CB81125+Medium+Weight+Chipboard+Sheets&qid=1571041704&sr=8-1 (https://www.amazon.ca/Grafix-CB81125-Chipboard-11-Inch-Natural/dp/B00161W6L8/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Grafix+CB81125+Medium+Weight+Chipboard+Sheets&qid=1571041704&sr=8-1)
It is also easy to use paper punches with it and the cuts can be very detailed/fine. One side has a smooth finish, the other regular cardboard. The main limitation of the tissue cardboard is the size which tops out at 12x22cm (4.5x8.5") for the biggest pieces.

I also use cardboard from cereal boxes which is twice the thickness of the tissue boxes and 2/3 that of the chipboard so in between that of the tissue and chipboard.Cereal cardboard can vary a lot between companies.
And I also use illustration board (the same as picture mat board?) with the smooth plate finish although the toothed finish is sometimes useful for a textured finish. And for very thin/fine work card stock (110lb -199g/m2)  which is just really very thick cover paper.
I like the consistency of knowing the properties of the cardboard I use otherwise I use what is available or needed for the job.

Speaking about cardboard, here is a teaser pic.

And back to the mercenary dropship, starting to detail the front

Chipboard?! I never heard of it, see you learn something  everyday, I've  been using  cereal  boxes all this time! Now I can build stuff and cut back on my weight.  lol Plus save money do you really know how much one box of cereal  goes for these days!

Thanks  :D

Thanks for the detailed explanation & the links Braz.
You have a cardboard pile? What a coincidence, i have one also 😁

Must point out that chipboard for me is something like particle board for you , i.e. synthetic wood.
The good thing is that when you get stuff like you showed us , it's like building out of plastic card, where the scale model's dimensions are more precise .

I also use mounting board, like that used for picture frames.

That's a good one Warmonkey  :D :D

Keep it up

@Warmonkey    lol  so true!

Re:chipboard. If ordering beware of the different thicknesses. The medium weight is good for structural builds, the lighter weigh is more like thin notepad backer to tissue box flimsy.

And now proceeding to the forward and roof detailing.  Lots of varied pieces of hardware.
The two nose sensors.

And the sensors mouunted. Also the wip of forward lights, smoke dispensers, radar domes, air intake and mystery sensor.
\
There is a caged sensor for which the cardboard cage I made was too flimsy...polystyrene to the rescue.

Some antennas and other sensors.
