Title: How to Start in Pulp gaming
Post by: crancko on March 13, 2007, 02:49:48 PM
Hello

Just interested in how to start in pulp gaming. I love skirmish games tipically WWII or modern games. I own the Gloire rules and love it.

Now I want to get more involved in Pulp era and my questions are:

- What minis to buy? I am interested in Indiana Jones and Set servants scenarios? Or Museum in El Cairo scenarios or similar....

- What rules are best suitable for this?
- Where to get scenarios for these situations?

thanks in advanced.

Clearly you are a person with sophisticated tastes!  :D

Gloire is based on ".45 Adventures" and so I would recommend you go with that, since it will be the easiest transition for you. It also has a WW2 supplement called "Amazing War Stories" which will give you lots of ideas for games as well.

As far as miniatures go, you have lots of choices. The Chaos in Cairo miniatures are one option, but don't forget to check out Copplestone as well, Pulp Figures, and Brigade Games' "Ends of the Earth" lines.

Good luck!

And don't forget the new Artizin figures. Late comers to pulp, but really nice stuff. Rattrap has some really nice figures too.

What I'm doing, is getting a couple of starting "factions" so I can start gaming as soon as possible, and then I'll see if I want to expand from there. I have the Artizan Sky Pirates (great miniatures, and I've always loved the idea of sky pirates!) and I'm currently shopping around for some good robots to oppose them.

This is in contrast to what I'm doing with Gloire, where I basically aim to get a bit of everything so I can game pretty much any scenario I like.

as for rules my choices would be:
- .45 adventure (if you liked Gloire you must love this game as well)
- Chain Reaction 2 (you'll see the most cinematic gunfights here :) )
- maybe We Can Be Heroes - but I haven't played it for quite some time  so I may be wrong...

as for minis, I've always liked Copplestone's stuff, but the other manufacturers also have very good stuff in their ranges.

I think the easiest way to get involved in pulp gaming is to sell your soul to Rich Johnson. And I believe there's a PDF Soul Contract you can download from the Rattrap website.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! My quest is for world domination. There can't be lots of us.

Copplestone has some great minis to represent Indy and Rick O'Connell from the mummy movies, as well as loads of character types perfect for what you want to do.

Servants of set could be had from Old Glory's Chaos in Cairo minis, though some of their characters aren't that good in my opinion.

Mine aim is to dominate those wishing to dominate the world...from the shadows and through sinister and mystical dealings

I know you all want world domination and I'm willing to parcel out fiefdoms to those who support me, but I will not tolerate pretenders to my throne.

And if you're doing a "Mummy" game, you have to grab some of Conquest's Pygmy Zombies so you can recreate the scene from the second movie.

I do agree with getting some of Copplestone's figures. And Brigade as just released some Arab diggers so you can do the Raiders scene where they dig up the Well of Souls.

World Domination? You guys think small.

I'll settle for no less than Universal Domination.

Then I'll give each of you a miserable little planet.

Definitely pick up '.45 Adventure' and 'Amazing War Stories' if you like Gloire. However I'd recommend still using Gloire's excellent melee system for .45 as it's much more cinematic.

Pulp figure companies I can recommend are:

www.artizandesigns.com - Excellent DAK figures for your Indiana Jones Germans, as well as of course their newer 'Thrilling' line.

www.copplestonecastings.com - Excellent Pulp Hero figures and dames too.

www.obeliskminiatures.com - Great desert raider Zombies and North African wildlife.

And for terrain look no further than:

www.hirstarts.com - in particular their line of Egyptian 28mm molds.

Hope that helps!

@operator5: fiefdoms you say? being not ready to dominate the world by myself yet, I'll be satisfied to become a slightl higher-ranking minion

@tabletop: while I think the melee system in Gloire is excellent, the system from .45 should be good enough for pulp-era adventures.

but yes, the melee system in Gloire is better...
