Title: Rangers of Shadow Deep (Flewdurr’s epic quest)
Post by: grubman on October 07, 2019, 12:12:19 PM
It’s been a looooong time since I was active in the gaming community... But on my birthday, by better half got me Rangers of Shadow Deep, and I’ve been quite taken with it.  I feel creative juices that have been dormant for years bubbling to the surface.

This thread is going to be a documentation of my creative journey as a gamer, and Flewdurr’s epic quest as a Ranger!

Preparations for the first game will probably take the longest, since I have minis to paint and terrain to build...but what is a grand quest without stalwart adventurers!?

I’ve decided to paint up miniatures that have been collecting dust for years.  Honestly, I’m not a fan of most new minis, so this whole project is going to have an “old school” -ish feel to it.

Baldrick (Recruit)
Schmedley (Templar)
Flewdurr (Ranger)
Jane (Barbarian)
Rebecca (Rogue)

BALDRICK

Flewdurr:  Baldrick, wake up!  The king is sending us on a mission!  I’ve got GOLD to hire a party of brave fighters!

Baldrick:  Ow much do I get?

Flewdurr:  You get nothing, knave! Claiming to serve me is enough reward for the likes of you.

Baldrick:  What’s my job then?

Flewdurr:  You have the important role of diversion...if the rest of us need to flee.

SCHMEDLEY

Flewdurr:  It says here “Templar of Irnoch”...very impressive.

Schmedley:  Retired, actually.

Flewdurr:  Retired?

Schmedley:  Yeah, I’m actually an atheist now.

Flewdurr:  !?!?

Schmedley:  Don’t worry, the stat line is the same.  Turns out that chit isn’t divinely granted after all.

JANE

Flewdurr:  So barbarian, you want to join this quest for glory to your god and king!?

Jane:  Yeah...I’ll fight for gold.

Flewdurr:  And what is your name?

Jane:  There are those who called me Jane...of course they are all dead now.

Flewdurr:  Dead?!?

Jane:  You can still call me Jane, it’s not like it’s a bad omen or anything.

REBECCA

Flewdurr:  Um...what are your special skills?

Rebecca:  I’m all dressed in black...whadda you think, Sherlock?

Flewdurr:  You lack fashion sense?

Rebecca:  I’ve got your money pouch and gold ring in my pocket right now.

Flewdurr:  So, a petty thief...I’m not impressed!

Rebecca:  I’ve got your codpiece too.

Flewdurr:  ???....Your Hired!!

Brilliant stuff. I was out of the hobby for a good 10 years and just starting painting and playing solo ROSD too. I like the way it can be transposed to your own created world very easy and creatures subbed for others easy too. Good luck with the project!

Heh heh.

Also the name of my first D&D character 39 years ago. :)

Hope to get my first game in sometime this weekend if I get everything I’m working on complete.

So...Treasure Tokens and Clue markers.  A crafty project that make me feel like I was back in grade school art class before mother’s day :)

That is a great-looking warband!

We just picked up the game.  I have only just started reading the rules.

I am looking forward to following this thread.

Looking at the required miniatures list for the first scenarios...and since the Walking Dead just started again, we’ll need...ZOMBIES!

These are from Irregular Miniatures pirates section.  I’ve had them collecting dust for ages.  Believe it or not, when I got them, “fantasy” zombies were pretty few and far in between.

Anyway...I like the look of these, and they scratch my old school itch.

Yep, all of them.  I have a ton of Josef Ochmann sculpts, he’s one of my favorite sculptors (although I don’t love everything he did).  I got tons of his stuff when Magaminiatures was still in business.  They’ve been sitting unpainted for (Lord, probably about 15+ years now!?!).  Very happy to FINALLY have a worthy use for them, and an “excuse” to finally paint them.

Midlam and Turnkey still have some of the line, but a lot of his sculpts have sort of disappeared.

Thanks.  I like spending money as much as the next guy...but this is a hobby for me, so I like to be “crafty” whenever I can.  Sure, it’s simple to buy markers, and they might look cooler...but I can say, “look what I made!” When I pull these out.  Ridiculously simple...but still a little sense of pride. :)

Zombies look great!

Thanks, I like them.  My eyesight has gone to hell over the last decade, so I’ve simplified my “style” dramatically.  At first I was kind of “embarrassed” that my miniatures weren’t individual works of art anymore...but now I enjoy the simple charms of table ready miniatures.

I bought a lot of them, a few years ago. I love the style of them. I keep them for my frostgrave project ;)

Those markers are great. I mean, you could buy markers, but why spend money on things that you can pretty easily make? Plus, who doesn't want some bespoke markers? lol

Ah, Flewdurr, one of my favourite characters in literature. And as Rangers is a new passion, I think I'm going to like this thread!  :)

Your minis are looking great, and I love that you are "crafting" some of your tokens - they are very appealing! I couldn't agree more with how flexible RoSD is: personally, while I quite like the fluff (which is a rare thing for me with games), I am working on shifting the whole thing to Conan and Hyboria. The rules will need a little tweaking - heroes will be buffed-up and will have only 1-2 companions, with probably larger numbers of minion types (skeletons, etc.) to face them - but so far things are going very, very well. I've had some cracking games!

Really looking forward to following your progress...

I’ve been working at a feverish pace to make houses for the first scenario (oh...how many Warhammer houses I gave to past friends I wish I had Bach, ha ha).

I’ve got 3 done (all made of styrofoam) and decided (tired of drawing bricks and shingles for a while) that the 4th building will be a ruined chapel, and use a building I already built for a Frostgrave game that never happened...figured the village was built up around this sacred place.

Ha ha, a LOT of stuff I like isn’t to other people’s taste...as is obvious with the direction most modern miniatures have taken.  Too big, too much detail (just for detail sake...I mean, nobody wears all those ornate clothes on the battlefield or adventuring), to realistic, too dramatic of poses.  Honestly, 75% of the “new” miniatures I see come out aren’t MY cup of tea.  But, I understand, different strokes...makes the world a fun place :)

Probably not (yet).  I’m trying to get everything I “need” done si I can play this weekend on my day off.  The building are a little “tight” inside anyway, ha ha.

Fun to hear somebody else thinks this. While I do like the occasional modern mini - Bronze Age is probably my favourite these days - like you, I much prefer the older sculpts. Something has been lost. Anyway, well said!

I hope you'll post an AAR once you've had your first game. Will it be this coming weekend? You're in for a treat - it's a really fun scenario!

I will be doing an AAR (although I confess, I have no idea what that stands for)...maybe many..  I’m hoping to keep this thread going as motivation as long as I continue to play through all the scenarios.

The rest of the monsters for the first mission We’re pretty easy.  I still had 4 old Games Workshop WHQ spiders sitting around from the WFB days.  At first I was going to use those cheap plastic spiders that come out every Halloween, but after I got them, I really didn’t like the look.  I was also having issues  justifying the relatively “high” price of most the giant rat miniatures I found.  In the end, I found Reapers “vermin” line.  Not really “old school”, but nice little sculpts, dirt cheap...and they’re just spiders and rats after all.

It’s been getting cold here in the frozen tundra that is Wisconsin, home of D&D.  We had a little “heat wave” yesterday, so I decided to take advantage of it to prime some miniatures in the garage before it gets too cold.  Some of these will be used for future missions...some of them ill just want to paint over the winter months.  Anyway, spent a lot of time cleaning flash and gluing on bases last night, ha ha.  This is my second batch...I’m up to my eyeballs in unpainted miniatures (just like everyone).

So I had my first game today...spoilers, I had a great time, even though the dice were against me.

I’m going to do my first write up, but this may take a while and several posts.

Most important lesson for anyone about to read this who HASN'T yet played the game...print of some monster reference cards beforehand!  Flipping through, even for only 2 monsters is a big pain in the butt.

So here’s how horrible my heroes did...

Mission 1, The Missing, Scenario 1:  the Deserted village

So here’s what the set up ended up looking like...it looks a little barren in pictures, and much better in real life.

TURN 1

The only logical thing to do is immediately run in several different directions, splitting the party and opening up all my flanks.  The plan is for Flewdurr to pick off the zombies while Rebecca runs around and looks for clues about what happened.  Jane and Schmedly would guard Rebecca’s flanks while Baldrick...well, there was no real plan for Baldrick.

Flewders first shot of the game easily dispatches a rat...this game is easy!  Rebecca runs to the first clue marker, with zombies hot on her trail, discovers some strange tracks, and figures out “their nature”...yep, that’s the explanation.

Then the monsters just start bulldozing us.  Flewdurr gets bit by a rat, that Baldrick subsequently dispatches, while a zombie shambles into Schmedly, an attack he barely fields off.

Jane utters a battle cry and charges a zombie, only to stab through it’s dead heart for absolutely no damage (it’s not a vital spot, after all)...my dice are really stinking up the joint!

The turn ends with 4 MORE zombies coming on the board.

End of turn...

I have a feeling this might get ugly.  ::)  If it's any comfort, I've had a game or two like that, where bad dice rolls simply buried my team, the one bad thing, perhaps, with D20's - they can be swingy. Glad to hear you still have a good time, though. It's a great game! Looking forward to any future reports.

TURN 2

Flewdurr spins, launches an arrow at the zombie eyeing up Rebecca and fells the rotting thing!  Maybe this plan is working?  Meanwhile Baldrick runs to assist Jane and feverishly stabs the zombie about a dozen times and actually does 4 points of damage.

Most of the zombies spend their time limping and crawling toward our heroes.  They get to them, but don’t have the time to attack.

The zombie battling Jane rolls a 20...the second time already for out villains, and just like that Jane takes a grievous 9 point wound.  She tries to fight back but misses...these must be “fast zombies”

In the other part of the village, Rebecca finds some treasure in the ruined temple.  Already SO tempted to just run off the table edge and secure the treasure!

Meanwhile Schmedly gets flanked and can’t hit the broadside of a zombie.  End turn 2...and time for a new die for the heroes...let’s try blue!

Title: Re: Rangers of Shadow Deep (Flewdurr’s epic quest)

TURN 3

Flewdurr decides to get serious, and uses frenzied attack...hits...but does absolutely no damage!  What the hell!  Stupid dice...but manages to crit on the defensive and kills one of his rotting opponent, while the other zombie slices a long gash in his side.

Meanwhile the random moving monsters seem to be strangely coordinated, converging and flanking heroes in all quarters.

Schmedly manages to kill one zombie, but just can’t fell the other, even though he does cut off one of its arms.  Rebecca runs to help the old man but is to winded to attack.

Jane kills the wounded zombie while Baldrick swings madly about with his eyes closed....so Jane just abandons Baldrick to go help Flewdurr (after all, he’s the one who pays her gold).

Apparently this shakes Baldrick who is immediately bit in the neck by a zombie and begins bleeding profusely.

Suddenly one of the buildings creaks...and collapses.  Much to Baldricks disappointment, it doesn’t even crush the zombie it falls on.

End turn 3...

Title: Re: Rangers of Shadow Deep (Flewdurr’s epic quest)
Post by: grubman on October 11, 2019, 11:47:27 PM
TURN 4

Jane slashed at the zombie attacking Flewdurr and sent it’s bloody head flying in the air as it’s body tumbled to the ground in a heap.  This allowed Flewdurr to spin around and shoot at a rat sneaking up from behind...but the sun apparently glared in his eyes and hi missed it by a mile.

Seriously...how do you miss this shot?

Schmedly is locked in a battle where he keeps landing blows, slicing off body parts, but not doing any real damage.  Even Rebecca, a professional backstabbed can’t seem to do any damage.

The zombie attacking Baldrick doesn’t seem to be having the same problem as it tears a vicious chunk out of Baldriks side...only 3 health left!  Damn you Jane for leaving me to die!

As Baldrick laments his fate, a huge rat crawls out of the recently collapsed building attracted to the smell of fresh blood.

End turn 4...

Title: Re: Rangers of Shadow Deep (Flewdurr’s epic quest)
Post by: grubman on October 12, 2019, 12:09:53 AM
TURN 5...things get uglier!

Jane yells a mighty barbarian yell and swings at the rat...but the vermin launches itself through the air, rips her throat out, and she falls to the ground clutching her bleeding wound, out of the fight.  In a fit of rage Flewdurr slices the furry thing in half with his sword.

The rat that crawled out of the collapsed building rushes up to Baldrick and bites him in the Achilles tendon...Baldrick hits the ground face first!

Schmedly decapitates one zombie only to engage another one who claws him in the groin...dropping the veteran warrior.

Rebecca starts to run away, but stumbles across the body of Aventine...the missing ranger!  Dead...but sporting a shiny magic sword.  The table edge is soooooooo close.

3 heroes down and 4 more zombies shamble onto the battlefield.

End turn 5...

TURN 6

Flewdurr is assaulted from all directions.  He wins combat with the zombie he is engaged with, and uses hand of fate to try and do some damage...but rolls a 2!?!  A rat scampers up to attack, but Flewdurr simply stomps it under his boot, leaving nothing but a bloody stain.  All this while the zombie, still chewing on a piece of Schmedly lumbers towards Flewdurr.

Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the village, Rebecca is SOOO tempted to run and secure the treasure.  With 2 turns yet to go, the battle is surely lost!

...but instead, she rushes back into the fray to help Flewdurr.

End turn 6

TURN 7

In this darkest hour, Flewdurr rolls a crit, slaying the zombie he is battling!  He takes the opportunity to flee towards Rebecca, with all the zombies hot on his tail.

As the zombie attacks Rebecca, she seriously starts to regret her decision...but that doesn’t stop her from lodging her dagger in the abominations forehead, killing it with one blow!

More zombies appear in the evening shadows as turn 7 ends...

TURN 8...OMG, we survived!

In the classic tradition on all great heroes...Flewdurr and Rebecca RUN AWAY, to live and fight another day.  They make it to the sacred ruined temple grounds where the zombies dare not tread!

VICTORY!

Well...sort of...

AFTERWORDS

I thought there would be casualties, but everyone made a full recovery free of disease.

63 XP, a sword +1 fight for next battle, and a stupid pair of boots of soft tread.

Great time!

Thanks, I enjoyed doing it.

I’ve never been a solo gamer before, and it was an interesting experience.  Who would have thought you can feel almost all the same emotions without an opponent.

Funny thing is there are defining moments when you have bad luck, or miss something by 1 or 2 points when you go, “come on!”, and are VERY tempted to cheat...I mean, only you will know, after all.  But it’s just those moments when you take the honest route (with yourself) that make the game fun and exciting.  I think if a person succumbs to those cheat temptations, it would make the whole experience pointless.

Came real close to failing at this mission, so victory, no matter how ugly, was that much sweeter. :)

I've never played a (designed as) solo wargame before, though when I was a kid I did play the odd game on my own when opponents were lacking.

The narrative of the game does appeal. I've got enough on my plate for the now though so will just have to wait for your next installment.

I'm loving the nesting trees and the cocoons.

Here’s the basic report of the second scenario...

The Infected Trees!

I’ll try not to bore you with a turn by turn report...but my second game went a lot better for Flewdurr (Ranger), Jane (Barbarian), Schmedly (Templar), Rebecca (Rogue), and Baldrick (Recruit), than the first (where all but 1 companion died).

Our heroes entered the wood fully prepared to slay spiders.

Flewdurr was hot today, rolling 2 crits, and felling many spiders from a distance with his bow.  Even when encased in a web of sticky ropes, he quickly broke free.

Jane was a pyro, slaying spiders in a mess of gore and ichor all the while torching 3 of the 4 nesting trees.

Rebecca dashed about, opening cocoons, but only finding walking dead and corpses.  Her luck failed her today, as her neck was torn open by a zombie, and she fell in a pool of her own blood.  The only survivor last scenario, she was the only casualty this one.

Schmedly fought valiantly, but was injected with venom in his first encounter with the chittering arachnids, and was moving slow, panting and gasping for breath the whole time.  He did manage to make it across the table and torch one nesting tree.

Poor Baldrick wanted to be the hero, opening cocoons, only to find terrifying zombies.  While his friends ran about doing heroic deeds and ignoring him, he was screaming like a girl and fighting for his life.  So how he managed to kill 2 zombies today slashing about madly with his eyes closed.

By turn 7, all the trees were ablaze and all the cocoons opened (mad I didn’t get to use any of the survivor miniatures I painted up), so the hero’s (carrying Rebecca) headed for the edge of the gloomy wood.  All but Flewdurr and Schmedly made it out before Schmedly noticed ANOTHER nesting tree...with treasure under it!!

Flewdurr an Schmedly made a mad dash for the treasure, but the sun went down fast and when all they could see were glowing pinprick eyes in the dark...they decided to get the heck out of there!

A successful mission!  Flewdurr advances to level 1, and now all the companions have 1 progression point. :)

Another great report.

Got all my miniatures painted up for Mission 2:  The Beacon Tower...now I have a ton of terrain to build.

First off, Schmedly decided to nurse his wounds from the last mission, while Baldrick decide to nurse an ale!  Fortunately the twin Berry brothers (Leather Berry and Dingle Berry) two archers and scouts were available for this mission, as well as their hound, Sir George.

Not crazy about the Reaper bones flesh golem...but couldn’t find an “old school” one I liked.  Took some liberties with the “skull faced” Shadow knight, am proxying my hawk for the vulture...and a 100 years war Man-at-Arms (will be painting these for “generic” soldiers).

Finally, while, ironically, I DO have a bunch of Gnoll miniatures I could use, I REALLY wanted to paint these goblins, with hobgoblins for sergeants...it’s my game, I’ll do what I want ! :)

I have found purposefully designed solo games to be quite satisfying. Way more than trying to play a multi-player game solo and take on all the roles. Assuming one can let the dice be the dice, the variety and outcomes are often quite interesting and rarely make for a truly decisive victory.

Great battle report, and I look forward to more!

Really don’t like the way that reaper flesh golem doesn’t “blend in” with the old school vibe.  So, I went back online and just couldn’t find a flesh golem I liked.

Then I recalled I had a Heroclix of Solomon Grundy that MIGHT fit the bill with a few modifications.

I like this much better.

I actually shaved off the shoelaces...but somehow you can still see them.

Now we know what Li’l Abner would look like as a zombie.  ;)

Busy week, but I did manage to get all the terrain done for my 3rd game in my “spare time”.

It’s amazing how much stuff you have to build for a single game when starting from scratch!

I used to have scads of terrain in my WFB (3rd-6th Ed) days, but all of it is spread out among 2 game stores and several friends houses...all many miles away (don’t even know if it all still exists).

Oh well...for me it’s primarily about the entire hobby anyway 🙂.  The more crafting I get to do, the more fun I’m having, and the more value I get out of the game.  It’s always cool to see something that sort of looks like what you want form out of bits and pieces of crap you find in the garage, woods, or laying around the house.

I know what you mean mate. I do like the look of this game and would love to spend a year going through the scenarios and building everything from scratch and painting up new minis...saldy I lack the time, the storage space and the funds  :'( I will have to live through plogs like this instead  lol

There’s a vulture overhead!  Shoot it down!...

https://youtu.be/3mX8I8JWnx0

My 3rd battle!  The Bridge Guards...a close call and a nail biter!

I thought it would be a good idea to have archers making sneak attacks for this scenario, so I left Schmedly the Templar and Baldrick, a recruit, at the tavern, and hired Leatherberry and Dingleberry, two twin archers.

The plan failed, since it was hard to stay concealed long enough to make it worth while, and when the fighting started, I could have really used more muscle.

The game started off famously, with Flewdurr, Jane, Rebecca, Sir George (the hound), and the Berry brothers sneaking across the board while the goblins wandered aimlessly about bumping into each other (too many magic mushrooms?).

Once a goblin stumbled onto Flewdurr the alarm was raised and the desperate fight began.  At first, the gang was performing brilliantly, killing goblins left and right.

Then things turned sour!  Leatherberry was the first to fall.  Even though almost all the goblins were dead, one of the last was a tough little bastard who began killing off companions one by one, even though he was grievously wounded himself...and then a vulture passed by overhead, and our Flewdurr knew things were dire.

When the last of the companions fell, and Flewdurr was all alone, he made a mad dash for the unguarded treasure by the camp sight, with 2 remaining goblins close behind.

Barely getting there in time, he found a set of heavy armor (ironically, that would have to be given to Schmedley at the tavern) and a stupid book of poorly written poetry.

On the 10th turn Flewdurr dashed off the table, one turn before the vulture would have made it...the sole survivor!

Thankfully, later that night, as Flewdurr sat eating some sausage and tomatoes by his campfire, his companions all showed up...each of them making a full recovery.  Too bad Flewdurr only made enough food for 1.

Note to self:  make some wound counters with numbers on them to reduce clutter.

Yep...Flewdurr was half dead as well...fortunately he wasn’t engaged and had a clear shot (and just enough movement) to get the goods and get off the board before dying (or the vulture reaching the edge of the table...don’t know what that would have meant yet, but I'm guessing not good).

So close to failure!

If anyone cares...the project isn’t losing any impetus, just had to work my “day off” this week, so time has been limited.

The next scenario takes us into the “dungeon”, so I’ve been spending what little time I have meticulously drawing thousands of bricks.

I was going to build all the furniture from scratch, but with free time at such a premium, I ordered a Mantic Terrain Crate off of Amazon.

All in all, doubtful if I’ll be ready for a game this weekend. :(

Home Depot (USA)...about 5 minutes up the road :). All the good gaming happens overseas, but at least pink foam is common in the USA.

Do you buy it in huge sheets? I feel like every time I look I can buy 3" foam sheets in 4x8' sections, but all of that is a bit above and beyond for my needs. I haven't seen thin sheet like you have. I may not fully understand where to look, I suppose.

Da Vurm!!

So I finished my dungeon floor and walls, but I’m waiting on some dungeon terrain I ordered to play my next game.

So rather than sit around doing nothing, I took a look at what I need to get painted for the following mission...and the Burrow Worm became my focus.

I already had the D&D purple worm I used for Frostgrave, and I have another one from Alternative Armies...but I didn’t really like either.  I don’t like the size or dynamic.

So...I figured, despite my lack of sculpting skill, I might be able to do this.  So...here’s the result.  I actually really like this.  It’s what I imagined when I read the monster description.

I know, nothing spectacular, but...

OK, seriously...am I stupid?

So, I bought this “terrain crate” (and twern’t cheap!) to save time building dungeon terrain.  All I had to do was prime and paint it...

...but once I took it out, I felt weird, like it didn’t fit in, like I was taking the easy way out.  So, I whipped up some terrain out of foam and popsicle sticks (literally, and took, maybe 15 minutes).  Painted it this morning.

Yeah, proportions aren’t 100% accurate...but it made me feel warm and fuzzy.  I guess off to eBay with the terrain crate (to take another loss), and time to get to work crafting.

Is there something wrong with me?

I was in on the Terrain Crate kickstarter, so I have everything in that box.  I wouldn't be too hasty about moving it out.  There's several bits in there that won't be nearly as easy to construct yourself.

Also, the wooden pieces you have as your example will paint up just as quick as the stuff you made - why not try that and see how it looks to you?  If nothing else, it'll add variety and quantity to the amount of furnishing terrain you have!

Already listed on eBay...just not my style I guess.

I also finished all my terrain, and did the next scenario, if anyone cares.  The battle report was on Facebook...where the adventure will continue.  :)

Not going to continue posting the adventure here?

Wasn’t planning on it.  Don’t want to sound like an attention whore, but I’ve been away from the hobby for several years and it’s pretty exciting to get back into it again.  I seem to remember the forums being a bit more active (or maybe I used to do cooler stuff), and taking all the time to write up an actual ,play and post a ton of pictures, only to get one or two comments isn’t very gratifying compared to how excited I am to share (although I do appreciate everyone’s comments and compliments).

I’ve never really done Facebook much before, but I can post there (which is actually faster, since I don’t have to host pics and do all the cut and paste) and almost instantly have multiple comments and conversations, and all those “likes” to at least know more than 1 or 2 people are actually enjoying what I’m doing.  Plus, since it’s specific to that game, there is a lot of sharing and bouncing around ideas.

Although posting in forums is such a hassle compared to Instagram or Facebook, it will be there for a longer time. The Facebook layout makes it hard to keep track of everything, and anything older than a week will get lost eventually.
Great work on the dungeon, btw. Must have been tedious all that brick drawing, though in the end it really pays off.

There’s also all the gate keeping of FB. You have to join FB, then you have to join the specific group. Plus, deal with the ads, ‘sponsored’ and ‘suggested’ posts. A bunch of noise. And this is before mentioning a madman collecting and selling your data.

Forums like this are free for all to see and fairly noise free.

Though it’s true there’s no dopamine hits from ‘likes’. Plus, FB is very easy to post pics to, for sure.

I wish there were some middle ground. The ease and direct interaction of FB, but without all the cruft.

Tor Varden, Lower Level...

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.  Our heroes entered the tower at a disadvantage when our thief, Rebecca, failed to pick the tower door lock and Schmedly smashed it with his shoulder.

The first room exposed a Goblin Shaman conducting a horrible experiment, stitching body parts together.  All the goblins were quickly dispatched, but not before the Shaman killed Rebecca with one monstrous blow. (Disappointed I didn’t get to use my converted Solomon Grundy flesh golem).

Next the party moved to the Armory, where blows were exchanged with more snot nosed goblins.  Baldrick, the recruit, dramatically killed a goblin with one critical blow in revenge for Rebecca.  Why these goblins had fairy dust, we may never know.

Finally our stalwart gang enters a room where a Hobgobling sgt. and more grubby goblins are busy torturing a priest, a princess, and a soldier.  The first thing the hobgoblin does is slit the throats of the soldier.  A massive battle takes place, and amidst all the splattering of blood, Baldrick falls with a gaping wound in his belly...but at lest the other two prisoners are rescued, as well as a badly abused dog.

So, the fearless adventurers prepare to ascend the stairs, only 3 in number (and two of those wounded).  Flewdurr our Ranger, Jane the Barbarian, and Schmedly the Templar barely take time to bind their wounds before continuing.  Fortunately Rebecca and Baldrick will live to fight another day.

Tor Varden:  The Upper Level...SWEET VICTORY!

Leaving a grievously wounded Rebecca and Baldrick downstairs, Flewdurr, Schmedley, and Jane surmount the cold stone steps to emerge from a trap door on a most grisly scene...

At first, our heroes chose stealth (staying out of sight from all but 1 archer).  But,  soon enough they were discovered, and the fearsome Shadow Knight swooped in.  Our steadfast Ranger Flewdurr drew first blood, before it became a dog-pile of slashing blades!

Even poisoned, from the foul air, out heroes took down the demonic entity.  Jane, who seemed strangely resilient to the poison cleaned up the rest of the rabble, while Flewdurr and Schmedley tried to keep up and guard her flanks.

An accurate shot from Flewdurr’s elvish bow, strung with magic harp strings, and the last invader of Tor Varden fell to the stone floor with an arrow shaft between his eyes.

After unchaining the prisoner, there were many pats on backs and passing of the wineskin!

Victory was theirs....this time!

The Broken Stairs...not the cakewalk I thought!

As our hero’s descended the twisted and cracked stairway, they made quick and uneventful progress.  The few giant flies that attempted to waylay them were quickly dispatched with well placed arrows or sword hacks.

Flewdurr and Jane both made it to the bottom of the stair first.  Jane was unscathed , but Flewdurr had an embarrassing stumble near the bottom that bruised his ego more than his body.

Schmedly was even more unlucky than usual (perhaps an atheist Templar IS a bane after all).  First he inhaled some toxic fumes belched up from the swamps below, and he fell behind.  Then he found a putrid corpse to examine, then he was poisoned by a fly bite, finally to slip and fall to his “death” at the bottom of the chasm.  He should really start praying again!

Baldrick was ordered to grab the treasure, and against her better judgement Rebecca backtracked to help him in case he was attacked by giant flies.  Unfortunately, shortly after securing the treasure, they heard a rumbling...and both were crushed in an avalanche, and the treasure was buried under tons of debris.

What started as a walk in the park ended with only two survivors.  Time to nurse our wounds before the next scenario.

Yeah, I liked it a lot better...felt if fit in better with the other stuff I built, plus I got more satisfaction out of it.

Ironically, I built it all in a “day”, which was less time than I spent “waiting” for the stuff I didn’t use to arrive on the mail.

Well, it’s mostly carved styrofoam, so I can’t prime or seal it...so that saves time :). That and I like making my terrain look “sloppy” and unrefined.  Not sure why, I just like it that way...and the bonus is it’s faster too.

This came in the mail today...so I’m just not even going to crack it open until I’ve played ALL the Rangers scenarios.

If I understand correctly, you're making all this terrain as needed per each upcoming scenario? if so....wow! hopefully, you'll be able to re-use a lot of it.

What are your thoughts on solo-gaming with this system on the whole now that you're several adventures in? And is that Frostgrave book more solo gaming?

:D Doh! I thought that last scenario sounded like it was going too well at the start there...I hope they have more luck in the swamp.

Yes I am making it as needed..painting miniatures as needed as well (fortunately I have a huge neglected collection).  Part of the reason it isn’t as “realistic” looking as it could be is that I’m making everything with storage in mind.  Everything breaks down, is primarily styrofoam, and doesn’t have delicate pieces...so I’m throwing it all in 3 plastic bins (the buildings are currently on a shelf until I get another bin).

I’m actually enjoying it.  A lot of people seem to be in a big hurry to get to the table with whatever they have, but for me it’s about the HOBBY primarily, and the GAME secondary.

I’m really enjoying the solo games, and I think the system is very good at it.  It’s not so harsh that you constantly feel beaten down and want to cheat, but it’s challenging (and random) enough that you never know what might happen.

Of course, the mechanic that really gives it traction is the (simple) monster activation sequence.  The game designer in me can’t help but think this would work well with ANY game system.  After this grand undertaking is open, I plan to try using it with my Heroquest board game and a couple old school Basic D&D scenarios.

Yeah, I was pretty much 3/4 of the way down the stairs and I’m like, “I built all this terrain for this!?!”...and then things got super fun.  Still, I think a bigger “swarm” of flies on the table at the start would have made it a bit more challenging/tense.

SWAMPLAND...kinda disappointing 😞

Our heroes came to the bottom of the broken stair fo find a putrid pool of deep water surrounded by a swampland.  Soft moans on the wind foreshadowed the horrors within.

Not only did Jane and Schmedley cough and gag on the foul air, but they nearly drown in the stinking water...but thankfully made it to the waters shore not too worse for the wear.

Flewdurr and Baldrick swam more gracefully to shore, and Flewduff even managed to fell a rotting zombie with a well placed arrow shaft as he emerged.

Meanwhile, Rebecca simply walked across the water, thanks to her miraculous boots and secured a pouch full of gold coins before being attacked by a zombie she quickly dispatched without suffering a scratch.  Another of the walking dead rose from the depths of the swamp, but now Jane was close by and another decapitated corpse was added to the bog.

After that it was a race...or rather, a slogging, squishy, slow march through the swamp.  Although a few flies pursued them from the stair, and another zombie appeared from the dark waters, our heroes all handily escaped with thier lives, fairly unscathed.

Commentary...I admit, I’m a little disappointed that this adventure was so easy, and quickly over (6 fast turns).  It took me a while to figure out how to put together the table and build the terrain...so once it all came together, I was ready for a dramatic quest...oh well, still fun, just not dramatic or memorable.  Who would think that everything going “right” would make for a “bad” session, ha ha.

Several people on Facebook have suggested trying it in “hard mode”, and another made the interesting suggestion of playing all the adventures in reverse order when done (the journey back to town).

Just finished playing The Last Stand (report coming soon-ish), but first...

All the scratch built terrain I’ve made for this game in the last month and a half...and I’m only through the first 3 missions, ha ha...Truly an awesome game for taking advantage of the BEST aspects of the hobby of wargaming. 🙂

The picture doesn’t do the sheer volume justice IMHO

Me as well...I guess if one does it will make for a more dramatic tale, but not sure if I would ever be able to use the mini for anyone else.

I improved/pimped a big amount of heroscape tiles (paint, weathering, flock), I plan to use it to "terraform" the terrain, and then add "classic" scenery on it, of course ;)

This is so far very interesting take, with scenery modelling, talk on figure aesthetics, funny fantasy personalities and scenarios that give positive vibes of old school 1970s D&D modules. Like what I always wanted Advanced Heroquest to be, after gaming through the original Heroquest. I don't even play this RoSD game but am already picking up inspiration for my own games of D&D/Warhammer/whatever - please continue! :-*

The Last Stand...OMG!

Before I write a very brief and vague synopsis...I just want to make some general commentary.

First...AWESOME scenario.  Wave after wave of nail biting attacks.  Just when you think it’s over for the heroes, a few descent rolls save your bacon...only for the next wave of attackers to rush on.

Total chaos from table edge to table edge.  I’ve enjoyed playing solo, but this scenario REALLY made me wish I had played with a group, both to handle the chaos and to share in the mayhem.

So...the scenario started with the burrow worm in the center on the house.  So Baldrick rushed in to protect the civilians and was killed on the very first combat roll of the game!

Flewdurr spent the entire battle outside the house, shooting approaching monsters (even taking down a troll with missiles) and engaging any that got close in hand to hand...surviving the battle at about half his health.  He even managed to secure a treasure on the last turn.

Schmedley fought heroically...but true to form, he bit the big one about half way through the scenario.

Rebecca rushed to grab the treasure, but as usual, her heroic side got the best of her, and she fell trying to protect the civilians from the horde of goblins that kept appearing.

Old reliable Jane made it through the entire confrontation (the 6th one she survived), jumping from one fray to another.  She was the hero responsible for keeping most the civilians alive.

The fighting men all fought bravely, but the odds were stacked against them, and they all perished (two from the same troll). Even the civilians got in lots of licks with their daggers...except the rat-catcher, who spent all but the last 2 turns staring out the same window, and never even made an attack roll.

Lots and lots of fun, and Flewdurr advanced to 4th level. :)

Hey Grubman,
Love this thread, so much inspiring terrain with the entertaining reports being the cherry on top. I'm really glad you don't post on FB exclusively, reading a whole, coherent thread is much for pleasant than the clutter of FB posts to me.
Sounds like a very exciting last stand your guys made. I played the all the core book missions with my wife and most of them ended without casualties on our side. I feel like having more than one ranger makes the game a lot easier and the extra companions you get don't make up for it. That being said, I'm not complaining too much, the scenarios are still a blast, just enough narrative to keep you interested while being vague enough not to hinder your own imagination.
I am looking forward to seeing more of your terrain and gaming.

There are further adventures coming.  I’ve got all the terrain built from scratch and almost all the miniatures for Blood Moon painted, but I ordered a single miniature for it and the order was screwed up...so it’s been 4 weeks of waiting.  In that time I also painted all the miniatures for the Burning Light missions.

I’ve been posting all the terrain and minis as they are finished on Facebook.

Also Pre-ordered the deluxe version of the game and have been perusing the PDF.

What’s even more “funny” is that I gave my sister about 200 miniatures I had that I wasn’t going to paint so I wouldn’t have to sell them on eBay...and that doesn’t include the 150 or so I AM already selling on eBay.

I’m trying to only keep stuff I’m going to paint/use.

BLOOD MOON...Where be the monsters!?

The moon was full, the lake was placid, and the horrors from the dark side...were pretty darn wimpy!

In classic dungeon delver tradition, the party split up immediately.  Flewdurr led the right wing, Jane led the left wing, and Rebecca said screw it and swam right up the middle.

All the monsters were quickly dealt with under a volley of arrows, with a couple flies being easily dispatched in a single round of combat.  The bloodthirsty adventurers eagerly awaited more...but hardly any showed their ugly faces, and when they did, they were immediately pincussioned with good rolls (including a crit).

Covin, who had eaten all the rations turned out to be a Werewolf, and was summarily hacked to bits.  When the second werewolf appeared, there was a dogpile...er...wolf pile on him, and he was pushing up daisies before he could tear out any throats.

...and those annoying crotchety old men and bratty welps appeared just in time to give the stalwart heroes some XP.

The “good guys” didn’t take a SINGLE point of damage the entire mission. 😮

I have mixed feelings.  I really enjoyed the prep for the game, loved the idea, had fun playing...but never felt tense or challenged.

I did roll VERY good the entire game.  I didn’t lose one combat roll (although I did have 1 tie).  On the Facebook page, people have reported having a hard time with the scenario.

I haven’t lost a scenario yet, but there have been a couple real nail biters.  Who would have thought a game would be MORE fun when things go wrong, ha ha.  I think I’m going to replay this one in the future, and I expect the results may be very different.
