Title: Suggestions to convert undead roman legionaries
Post by: Gabbi on October 14, 2019, 11:40:01 AM
I'd like to convert a few undead roman legionaries for Broken Legions. Looking for suggestions.

Here's a pic from the article introducing them:

Author says models are Citadel, Mantic and Warlord. I'm familiar with Citadel and Mantic ranges, much less with Warlord's. What kit would be best to get for the purpose?

Also, looking for suggestions to replace roman legionarie heads with skulls inside the helmets.

Interestingly enough I am putting together some test figures and just about to start a similar project for "Broken Legions - Cthulhu Campaigns" and the Lost IX Legion.

I have:
Zvezda Cursed Legion (1 x Box of infantry)
Mantic zombies
Mantic Ghouls
Mantic Skeletons
Warlord Early Imperial Romans
Warlord Early Imperial Roman Veterans (10 "free" figures from a wargames mag)
Lots of spare bits.

The Warlord Veteran Roman shields are very handy as they are bashed about and there are wounded heads etc.  From the picture the bodies are a mix of Roman legionaries and veterans, ghouls and zombies with armour, weapons, helmets, shields and details from the veterans and other Roman sets.

I'll post the results later on.

Very interesting project! 8)

Might I suggest looking at the Warlord (former Wargames Factory) and/or Wargames Atlantic skeletons too? those are not sculpted heroically, so would probably go together with Warlord legionaries much better. Also, splicing the smaller skellie heads into spare roman helmets will most likely yield much better results.

The Mantic undead are great too btw, but more limited in their conversion options. The ghoul and zombie 'ranges' each only contain 2 miniatures, and the skellies, whilst awesome, are difficult to convert as they're all done up in 15th century(ish) armour.

And aren't the Svezda miniatures more 1/72 scale?

I'm looking forward to see what you come up with though! :)

Thanks for commenting and suggestions.
I'm still gathering ideas and material. It's not a project that will hit my work desk anytime soon, I think.

No the Cursed Legion models are 25 to 28mm figures. Each one has about a dozen bits.

Minifigs @ Caliver make two poses of undead legionaires if that's useful.
