Title: 15mm Gruntz project log (Terrain and Models)
Post by: stavrous on October 14, 2019, 04:58:05 PM
Just creating a little spot to show off some of my 15mm stuff.  First up is a huge picture dump of some 3D terrain tiles that I found online and made changes to suit my needs(re scaling, correcting, creating new pieces).

I usually just print a piece here and there, then threw them in a box.  But when the box filled up it was time to start painting.  My paint scheme is simple since I had a few things in mind.

1. Quick - need to use an airbrush to do the painting with little brushwork.
2. Uniform - as tiles change the paint scheme needs to remain easy to duplicate.
3. Simple - not overdoing the color is hard to do, but accents will be picked up by special tiles.
4. Terrain - is meant to be nice but not an attention grabber.  2-3' rule applies here.
5. No washes - since these tiles are 3D printed I am not filling print lines.
6. Details - pick out just enough without going overboard.

Part 3 the details.

Since I now have the bulk of the tiles completed, I can begin working on some specialty tiles.  First, one I wanted to work on was some computer/command rooms.  Years ago, I picked up some terminals from Khurshan miniatures just for this purpose.  Now is the time to use them!

Laying out the a couple times and I found that my basing system should work for most of the tiles.

Smaller computer rooms

Perfect height and spacing

Don’t worry that flashing will be cleaned up

Walls are not attached

All three computer rooms together

Decided on painting the terminals white to give a clean appearance[b/]

A little cleaning up to do but not to bad

I thought maybe I was the only one who couldn't see it.

Hope you get it figured out Stavrous! Sounds like it would be a great project to check out.

Stavrous,

I find that i have to upload files here, on LA, and then I have the best results linking to them. I'm still not seeing anything, and I've had similar problems with Amazon and Google images. Images pop up but seem to have some expiration date for how long the link stays active. It is a pain.

Hopefully they are working now, posted them on imgur and for some reason not all of the pictures are working correctly on my end now.  Stupid tech.

I can see the pics, looks very good. May I ask what 3D printer you have and how easy it was to learn to use? I've never used one but I am getting more tempted to get one, and yours looks like it can do some good sized prints. Ty.

I’m currently using a couple ender 3’s from crealty. It’s a good entry level printer for the money. I have been using 3D printers for over 30 years now so I have a bit of experience. I also currently manage a Penn State campus library maker space and have access to resin printers and other equipment. So some of the stuff is made at work from time to time.

Fun table. That seems like a good fit for 3d printing.

That's a lot of xenos. Game over man...

How are you doing the red planet look? Pigments?

Not pigments, I am using "Basics" cheap paint.  Once dry a wash of sephia and drybrush of desert yellow.  Simple but effective.

I have the next week off for thanksgiving so there should be some more progress on this project.  This first picture just about sums me up after Halloween this year.

Best part about 3D printed terrain, you can just chuck it in a box for storage.

Worse part about 3D printing, when you get a spool that is messed up.

The hunt begins!

Found some new files on Thingiverse that I re-scaled for my project.

I do get a lot of questions about my 3D printing.  For terrain for the most part I get away with FDM printing but things I need detail printed its SLA printing.  How good of quality can you get.  Well have a look.

As you can see you can get some nice prints but only if you have a good file to work with.  As I said before the University I work at is extremely supportive of my maker-space.  This year I secured funding for a new vacuum former, Form 3XL(when it ships), and a plastic injection machine.  This is in addition to the 8 3D printers we already have along with our laser cutter, and other goodies.  Yes the students use these more than I do.  It helps that my maker-space is free to use and is for personal use as well.

I especially love the computer/electronics equipment.

The red walls and flooring together remind me of the decor of a Chinese restaurant.

Same here WM.
Will have to get one also & learn new skills.
You should look up the new Antenocities KS.
I backed it.
Loads of superb models.

Thanks everyone for the compliments.  No pictures today but a quick progress update.

Working on some new 3D files to add in some new variety to the tiles.  I also made some changes to my printing setup yesterday which took the better part of the whole day coding.  But now I have everything setup the way I wanted when I bought my second printer.

@ Zunelord - I backed the Effret(or whatever) KS for digital files.  While he makes some nice stuff I have found over the years that Antenocities is all over the place and have worried they will close up shop.  I believe that there are still people awaiting physical models from the kickstarter and those were suppose to be delivered awhile ago.  Even my digital files were delayed which made no sense at all.

After a little hiatus this project has been resurrected back to life.  Since November things were running smoothly on it with painting and printing until the end of December.  My wife of 18 years decided she no longer wanted to be a wife or mother and left our kids and I to be with her new boyfriend.  So for the second time in my life I became a single father raising kids all on my own.  Had a heart attack in January when more information came out and have since really busted my butt taking care of things.  Now comes the long arduous task of rebuilding from the ashes and making the best of the situation.  Last month I was able to finally start working on hobby projects and this board was one of them.

Great work Stavrous, thanks for sharing.
And the best thing is that it's super pack-able & can easily be carried from place to place ( or stacked on top
of a wardrobe  ;) :D :D)

Yes Antenocities had big problems with having to move their workshop's location and during CV19 !!! ...
but seem to be settling now . I had to change my 15mm models to stl's and did get them eventually.
Still have to get a 3D printer, though.

I am truly sorry you went through all you did, & as Cook said may you find solace in the hobby.

Again thanks for sharing
Keep it up

Your work on the terrain boards are great and pack away very well too! I still need to look into getting a 3D printer as well there is so much great stuff out there that it is killing me!

Wow, very sorry to hear about that.

I was a single parent for most of my son's life, so I can relate a bit.  Hope your situation improves.

I love your designs,  They are very neat!

Love your computer room section especially.  That'd be perfect for SHADO HQ.

Any chance you'd be willing to sell some of the computers in 15mm/18mm scale, and/or possibly re-scaling them to 25mm/28mm scale?

If so, I'd be interested in some, in both scales.

@ Mako, the computers are actually from Khurshan and part of his range.  Maybe check with him to see what he can do.

The kids and I played our first game but did not take any pictures.  Next game will be this week so we will make sure you snap some and post up some battle reports.
