Post by: carojon on October 28, 2019, 11:02:31 AM
After having a week of R&R on the south coast, our tour of Peninsular War battle sites headed north as we prepared to catch a boat back to 'Blighty'.

The fist stop off on the way took us to the beautiful cathedral city of Burgos, the capital of the Kingdom of Castile and former seat of the Kings of Leon, and then, Napoleon came along and turned it into his key depot along the great road from France into the Peninsula.

In 1812 Wellington was keen to secure the gains made after the Battle of Salamanca and the taking of Burgos was key to his holding a position on the Ebro as a jump off point for 1813. As events proved, it didn't quite work out that way.
