Title: "Gentlemen, We Will Stand and Fight" - AshLAM '19
Post by: Mad Lord Snapcase on October 30, 2019, 02:47:02 PM
It is nearly time to travel far into the grim north for the annual meeting of the three musketeers. A meeting with Athos and Aramis and three full days of gaming. There will be copious amounts of sinew-stiffening liquor and no doubt a few pies! For the past two years the event has been held at Snapcase Hall, Much-Piddling, Deepest Devon (see DevLAM ’17 and DevLAM ’18). However, this year we are meeting in the lovely Derbyshire Dales for AshLAM ’19. This will take place at Vagabond Towers, the home of Aramis.

Vagabond is putting on an Old West game (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=120198.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=120198.0)) and Doug em4 is putting on a game of Kill Zone. My contribution has been rather easy this year. I am the proud owner of Silent Invader's beautiful 1914 scenery and figures and my game will be a small action right at the start of the battle of Le Cateau.

The following starts to set the scene for my game at AshLAM '19 entitled "Gentlemen, We Will Stand and Fight".

My apologies for the shameless plagiarism from first Antony Hope's excellent book 'Gentlemen, We Will Stand and Fight' and secondly from the Middlesex Regiment's War Diary. The uncomfortable night spent in the railwayman's tool shed was in fact the story of Captain Cunningham, commander of 'C' Company and his batman, Private McDonald. My rather silly names for characters is in no way intended to be derogatory to the men who fought that day in August 1914. As this game will take place over the Remembrance Sunday weekend it will be a poignant reminder of the horrors of the Great War.

General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien

General Alexander Heinrich Rudolph von Kluck

In the early hours of 26th August 1914, as the British Expeditionary Force (the Old Contemptibles, as they liked to refer to themselves) retreated in the aftermath of the Battle of Mons, Lieutenant General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien’s Second Corps was facing the most extreme danger. It’s 60,000 fighting troops, exhausted and scattered, were spread out to the north and west of the town of Le Cateau. BEF C-in-C Sir John French’s orders were to continue the Retreat at all costs, while von Kluck was desperate to bring the British to battle.

Sir Horace decided to stand and fight, trusting to the skill, courage and marksmanship of the men who had already proved themselves at Mons three days before, reckoning this preferable ‘than to turn our backs on the enemy in daylight’. He was outnumbered three to one, and some of his fighting battalions and field artillery batteries had only an hour or two to dig in and prepare for battle. And yet by the end of that day the men and officers of Second Corps, with only 1,200 of their own killed, had inflicted casualties on the enemy of nearly 9,000 and delivered him such a blow that the BEF was able to continue the Retreat almost unmolested for the next ten days. It has been called ‘one of the most remarkable British feats of arms of the whole war’. Yet while two brigades of infantry and two brigades of artillery were fighting for their lives on a hill by Le Cateau, only ten miles away the rest of the BEF – Haig’s First Corps – was marching steadily away from them.

In Le Cateau the 19th Brigade were having the devil of a time even before the first shots were fired. The four battalions of the 19th Brigade had come to France to man the lines of communication and they had been hastily pressed into fighting service at Mons. Now, although they came nominally under the orders of the Second Corps under General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien, like many other units they had received no orders cancelling the retreat. No one had been able to find them. They had reached Le Cateau very late and had bivouacked near the railway station. Captain Kenwood-Chef, in command of ‘C’ Company, the 1st Middlesex was fortunate in having Lance-Corporal Spankhurst as his batman and Spankhurst was a very resourceful soldier. Nothing got him down and the news from home that his wife was with child gave him an even sunnier disposition. His cheerful demeanour had been a distinct comfort to Kenwood-Chef on the long retreat from Mons. When the company had settled down in the station yard for the night, Spankhurst had taken it upon himself to find a billet for the Captain. It was no palace, merely a railwayman’s shed between the points a little way along the tracks. It was impossible to stand upright and since the hut was a dumping ground for tools it was not too easy to lie down, but Kenwood-Chef had been grateful. Spankhurst had even managed to produce a mug of hottish tea (and a dash of ration rum) when he poked his head into the shed with the unwelcome news that it was time for Kenwood-Chef to arise from his slumbers. It was a quarter to four in the grey dawn of Wednesday, 26th August and already the exhausted and sleepy Battalion was rousing reluctantly to move off before full daylight. The 1st Middlesex would be the last of the four battalions to move, for this morning they were to be the rear guard to the Brigade and, as rear guard to the Battalion itself, the men of ‘C’ Company were to be the last out of Le Cateau.

Captain Kenwood-Chef summoned the acting commander of 1 Platoon, Colour Sergeant ‘Neddy’ Snapcase, to his tool shed. Neddy had taken over the platoon after the death of Lieutenant Strangely-Brown at Mons. The platoon was now understrength with no hope of replacements at present. The only consolation Neddy thought, as he saluted Kenwood-Chef was that he had a 4-man Vickers machine gun team, attached to his platoon. Including himself, a total of 31 men fit to fight.

“Now then, Snapcase, good man, good man. 1 Platoon have fought bravely and now I have a very important job for your lads”.

“Sah!” replied Snapcase, always a good answer when replying to an officer.

“Our orders are to be clear of the town by 05.30am this morning. It’s now 04.00am and I see no way that 1st Middlesex as rear guard will be able to quit Le Cateau until about 06.30am”.

Neddy glanced about at the chaos in the railway yard and further afield and could only agree. The RAMC boys were still trying to evacuate the last of the wounded by stretcher and ambulance. The roads were blocked by BEF General Service wagons as the other companies of the 1st Middlesex tried to leave nothing behind for the enemy. Civilian carts with panicked drivers interfered with the process and there were abandoned stores, ammunition and battalion transport everywhere.

“As you know Snapcase, ‘C’ Company are to be the rear guard to protect 1st Middlesex, I want Number 1 Platoon to be ‘C’ Company’s rear guard. You are to defend the eastern edge of Le Cateau, specifically the following buildings; L’Oeuf de Canard, the bicycle repair shop, the church, the Boulangerie de L’Eglise and of course, the vital crossroads they command. All clear so far?”

“Sah!” replied Neddy.

“Good show, Colour Sergeant. I want you to deny the enemy those buildings and the crossroads until you are sure the Brigade has cleared the town. Once you are sure the Brigade is clear, you may effect a fighting retreat and re-join ‘C’ Company as soon as possible. I want you to take Lance Corporal Spankhurst with you to act as your runner. Pip, pip.”

“Sah!” replied Neddy, as he saluted and about-faced. At the double, he ran back to 1 Platoon, closely followed by Spankhurst clutching his .303 Lee Enfield and a snap-sack with all his worldly goods.

So there we have to leave the brave lads of 1 Platoon for the moment as they assess how they will defend their sector of Le Cateau to give the rest of the battalion a chance to establish their battle lines in the open country behind Le Cateau.

My inspiration for the following is from a game put together for Partizan 2018, La Gorgue Airfield 1918. I absolutely loved not only the main game but all the superb vignettes all over the lay out. I just had to steal all these lovely ideas. If you have a look through the following three links you will see where all the original ideas came from.

The following photos are to set the scene for the game at AshLAM '19 and to show some of the confusion on that fateful August morning. Oddly enough, they will not affect the game and will move off the table as the German forces move onto the table. Just a bit of whimsy really!

Bloody Redcaps! Now there's bound to be a traffic balls-up.

In the front of the motor can be seen the most dangerous combination known to man, an officer with a map. General Sir Anthony Cecil Hogmanay Melchett, VC, KCB, DSO is trying to reach GHQ with his passengers. Not much chance of that with Private Baldrick driving.

The General's French liaison officer from General Lanzerac's staff, Capitaine Bertrand le Cassercas is hitching a lift with Melchett.

He seems to be accompanied by wine and women and is no doubt (under the influence of Pernod) about to burst into song.

Thank you all for your very kind comments. Lady Godiva does seem to be very popular! She and the French chap have been sat in the back of that car unpainted for a very long time and it was a great excuse to use them.

I think you will find the 'Die Hards' a pretty tough mob to shift out of their positions. "Die hard the 57th, die hard!"

Colour Sergeant Neddy Snapcase commands 28 infantry soldiers in 1 Platoon and has a four-man Vickers machine gun team. There are also a couple of surprise events which will remain 'under-wraps' until the day. The fighting forces are the figures painted by SI and the rules are written by the same rather talented individual. Thanks, Steve.

Thanks for bringing me up to speed again, M'lud......I’m about to start serious revision of all previous info sent on the forthcoming game.

Splendid photos - I must say my avatar is appropriately suave and dashingly handsome (Von Emvier) whilst Vagabond's is appropriately sinister, cruel and cold-heated. Yours is.......reassuring  :D

The anticipation levels are cracking up to dangerous heights....

You are a lucky man as owner of Silent Invaders WW1-Board. I couldn’t play it at BLAM, but I saw it. Amazing. Wish I could come over, but twice a month is to much. Always looking for skirmish ideas for WW1. Big battles in WW1 are not very exciting...

Always looking for skirmish ideas for WW1.

Plenty of ideas for skirmish games in these very early battles like Le Cateau. The British guns were firing over open sights next to the infantry. There are quite a few cavalry skirmishes when entering villages on reconnaissance. The battle of Landrecies has plenty to offer, as well.

I'm not sure you should have posted this decidedly scary picture on a public forum it's bound to give people of a nervous disposition a nasty fright,  and could be the cause of cow's milk turning sour,  a blight of pumpkin scabies, and a plague of  worzel worms..

It was an excellent game, the scenery was amazing and  the side I was on won inspite of a pair of dodgy, commanders, what more could you ask from a game. Well apart from 3 grey beards taking selfies.

I don't remember the space ship over  Neddy Snapcases head taking part in the game but I suppose all will be revealed when the AAR arrives.

The game was fought using the original rules for BLAM 2015 written by Silent Invader. This required the players to plot their opening dispositions on paper before the game commenced. Once dispositions were plotted the Germans would start on the eastern edge of the board, the British would start occupying the three town tiles to the west.

The German commanders (von Emvier and von Vagabund) were handed their sealed orders by a mounted Uhlan direct from General von Kluck.

The German commanders were given time to discuss their orders and plan their dispositions. During this time, I set up the column of wounded, refugees and stragglers to add a bit of atmosphere and to highlight the confusion of the retreat from Mons.

Here are some random images taken on the day. This post will feature the wounded column and the objectives for the three players. Then I will make another post with the actual game photos and an account of the action as I remember it through a haze of senility and alcohol.

At 06:00am the Germans begin to shell Le Cateau.

British Objectives (played by myself in the guise of Colour Sergeant Neddy Snapcase)

·   The British forces are in hasty defence of the eastern edge of Le Cateau.
·   Colour Sergeant Neddy Snapcase’s force is a reduced platoon of the Middlesex Regiment which is acting as rearguard to allow other units to clear the town.
·   Support is provided by a single Vickers MG team and a Belgian Minerva armoured car. Also, a British spotter plane is operating in the area.
·   All of the British forces are well-trained and highly motivated.
·   Le Cateau must be defended until the end of turn 7.
·   The Minerva armoured car commanded by 1.eme Lieutenant Charles Henkart will appear at the start of turn 5 in a position determined by the roll of a D6.
·   The spotter plane flown by Lord Flashheart will crash at the start of turn 3 in a position determined by the roll of a D6.

German Objectives (played by Doug em4 as Oberleutnant Willi von Emvier and Vagabond as Oberleutnant Helmut von Vagabund)

·   The German forces are advancing from the east and need to pass through the town of Le Cateau to take advantage of its road network.
·   Oberleutnant Willi von Emvier and Oberleutnant Helmut von Vagabund, your force is 1 and 2 Zug, 26th (1st Magdeburg) Infanterie Regiment "Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau".
·   You are supported by one Maxim Maschinengewehr Team each.
·   All of the German forces are well-trained and highly motivated.
·   Enter in force, each of the three town tiles by the end of turn 7.
·   The Maxim teams will appear at the start of turn 2 in a position determined by the roll of a D6.
·   An enemy spotter plane is operating in the area and in the event that it is brought down the pilot is to be captured for interrogation.

The next post will feature the game photos and the AAR.

To be continued…

This write-up is promising to be as good as the game - and that’s saying something....!

Poor old Speckled Jim but, looking on the bright side, he’ll come in handy if rations are in short supply on the retreat - pigeon casserole, mmm....!

Looking forward to seeing the rest of this AAR. It was a spectacular game and I expect nothing less in the report :D

After dispositions were mapped the German commanders needed to decide how they would conduct their advance. They could advance in column which would mean they would advance much faster or they could spread out in open order. Open order would result in less casualties but would mean a slower advance to target. Oberleutnants von Emvier and von Vagabund were given time to decide this over some bottles of beer I had bought at the Black Sheep brewery at Masham whilst on holiday. This was an important conference as in the game they would only be able to talk to each other if their character figures were within 6” of each other on the board.

Meanwhile, I as the British was allowed to put barricades up across the roads and building fronts.

Having built the barricades, I managed to drag the Germans away from their cosy fireside chat and figures were placed on the board. The German players were not allowed to view the British dispositions from anywhere except their end of the board. They were unsure as to the number of machine guns the British had. Oberleutnant von Vagabund produced some 1:1 scale binoculars to view the British positions.

Now was the time for the German commanders to put their cunning plan into action. They had elected to advance ‘en colonne’ in the Napoleonic fashion. The early days of the Great War more often resembled the wars that had gone before, rather than the war that was to come. Cavalry roamed the battlefields and guns were bought into action by teams of horses and limbers. The overall British commander of II Corps, Smith-Dorrien had survived the slaughter at Isandlwana and fought bravely as a junior officer in the Second Boer War.

The two sections under von Emvier advanced, one in the fields to the south and the other directly up the cobbled road leading to the disputed crossroads.

The two sections under von Vagabund form a column together and take a more northerly route through the open fields.

The section advancing up the cobbled road start to take casualties from the Vickers. British casualties are light at this point as only the front two ranks of each column can fire. With an understrength platoon though, the Die-Hards cannot afford to take any casualties in their desperate defence.

Out of focus (as he often is) von Emvier can be seen here leading from the rear. He assured us that this is the correct military tactic and who were we to argue?

The German advance continues relentlessly and the more northerly column is surprised to find very limited fire coming from the Boucherie. This is due to that British section being out of contact with their Sergeant and throwing some very poor dice to activate with a corporal in charge.

At the start of Turn 2 the Maxim gun teams arrive on the eastern edge of the board on random tiles. They begin to advance to catch up with the fast-moving columns.

Although the Vickers continues to fire directly into the advancing German infantry, the rate of fire is halved as two of the Vickers crew are killed.

The Germans are now very close to the British barricades and it looks like they may have to storm these barriers with the bayonet. More portentous events will unfold in the next post as the 26th Magdeburg charge with cold steel.

To be continued…

I do have to say in fairness, the three players have pooled their photos on a shared drive and I have used photos from each player.

In order not to keep Marine0846 waiting too long, I am about to post the next part. A little bit of a digression from the main game but it added a lot to the overall game.

Thanks.   :)

There were some special events planned and the arrival of the Maxim teams in Turn 2 was featured in the last post. At the start of turn 3 there was another event planned.

At GHQ there were great concerns over the location of I Corps under the command of Sir Douglas Haig. Staff officers at GHQ were assuming that Haig would support Smith-Dorrien and his II Corps in the coming stand at Le Cateau. Instead, the only sketchy information which GHQ had received, indicated that Haig was drawing further away from II Corps instead of coming to assist.

Major Robert Brooke-Popham, commander of No. 3 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps was tasked with finding Haig’s location.
No. 3 Squadron were equipped with single-seater Sopwith Tabloids which were being used as scout planes. Major Brooke-Popham immediately sought out his most daring pilot, the Lord Flashheart and tasked him with locating the missing I Corps.

Sopwith Tabloid

The Lord Flashheart

Flashheart’s mechanic, one James McCudden had the Tabloid ready and Flashy took to the skies. His search began in the skies over Le Cateau and Flashy intended to widen his circle of search until he located the missing Corps. Unfortunately, it was not to be. A stray rifle bullet (probably fired by the 26th Magdeburg down below) ruptured the fuel line of the Tabloid which rapidly began to run out of ‘juice’.

The game required the plane to crash in the centre of a tile determined on a roll of a D6. I was fervently hoping that it would crash directly onto some German infantry. However, my dice rolling being what it was, Flashy came down fairly well and pranged his kite in the fields outside Le Cateau.

The Lord Flashheart scrambled out of the Tabloid cockpit and saw how close the approaching German column was. He readied his revolver and prepared to sell himself dearly.

The German commanders would score more victory points at game end by taking the pilot prisoner rather than killing him and this is what they did.

Lord Flashheart was surrounded by German soldiers and was forced to surrender.

Flashy was escorted to the rear to take no further part in the battle.

As this was taking place, the decimated section which had advanced up the cobbled road was reaching the British barricades. The next post will feature the vicious hand-to-hand fighting over the barricades and will show how the valiant ‘Die Hards’ fought a rearguard action worthy of their regiment’s name.

(It is true that a scout plane was sent by GHQ to look for Haig on the morning of the battle of Le Cateau. James McCudden was a mechanic and later observer in No. 3 Squadron until he trained as a pilot in 1916. He went on to achieve 57 aerial victories).

To be continued…

More fun, cool side story.
Poor Flashy, the war just started
and he is put out of action, captured. :o
He will probably in up seducing the General's wife. ;)
Or a "Great Escape?" lol

PS, who makes that great looking figure you used for Flashy?

I'm not sure if this report is conveying the panache and daring do spirit of the German commanders, one leading from the rear and the other from the centre of a huge column of infantry, but no matter, I'm sure you will come to it.

In true French Napoleonic fashion we came on in the same old way, would we finish in the same old way?

Cracking job so far. :-*

You came on in the same old way but we were unable to beat you in the same old way, this time. Hard pounding, gentlemen.

Lon, I know Flashy had drained his second hip flask so you are probably right!   ;)

I think this one is most likely Marine0846! Followed by an escape out of the window, sans trousers when the General arrives home unexpectedly!

The decimated section of 1 Zug reaches the barricade at the crossroads. These would have been a 19 man section at the beginning of the attack and it looks like about 8 have made it to the town. They had the hardest job as they were advancing directly in the line of fire of the Vickers team. By this time however, the Vickers was only being manned by two of the team and thus the rate of fire had been halved.

It was time for the cold steel. The British had the advantage of fighting from behind cover but the Germans in most places were able to put 2 men onto 1, which made it difficult for the British to survive as they had to win two fights. I am very sad to report that it was here that Colour Sergeant Neddy Snapcase and Lance Corporal Spankhurst went to glory, refusing to give an inch of ground as a ‘Die Hard’ should.

No. 1 Section of the ‘Die Hards’ was under the command of Corporal Bunter and had spent three turns in a row not firing at the advancing German column led by Oberleutnant von Vagabund.

The other section of 1 Zug on the German left flank had arrived at Le Cateau relatively unscathed. Flashheart had been hustled to the rear at point of bayonet and Oberleutnant von Emvier can be seen here brandishing the family sword and ordering his men into the attack.

Helmut von Vagabund’s double column now split into two sections, one attacking the centre and the other heading to the Boucherie on the German right flank to see why no fire was coming from there!

My dice throwing suddenly took a turn for the better and the British were able to do very well at the hand-to-hand fighting but the odds were just too great. If a ‘Die Hard’ won a fight, then two more Germans would move into position immediately.

One by one, the valiant defenders were picked off by the advancing Magdeburg infantry.

Now the jubilant survivors of 1 Zug were into the town. Here we see the remaining five survivors, three more having gone down in the bitter bayonet fighting at the barricades.

The German soldiers now concentrate on mopping up the last remaining resistance from the Middlesex rearguard.

Just when they thought it was all over, a Belgian Minerva armoured car, commanded by 1.eme Lieutenant Charles Henkart appears from the town. Once again, a special event at the commencement of turn 5 and its location determined at random by a D6.

The Belgians open up with Hotchkiss MG but it looks to their eyes as if it is too little, too late. As the Minerva begins to engage the German soldiers, they can see that the rearguard have died to a man, buying vital time for their comrades to retire from the town and take up their positions ready for the day’s epic events to unfold.

The Minerva bursts through the barricades and turns north on the disputed road, firing the Hotchkiss as they drive.

1.eme Lieutenant Henkart decides that discretion is the better part of valour and decides to make a hasty exit from the town. A section of von Vagabund’s men is blocking the road but with great Belgian verve, Chaffeur Hergé drives straight through them, running two of them down as they leave the town of Le Cateau.

There, unfortunately for the British, the game came to an end. The British needed to defend the town until turn 7 but by turn 5, most of the rearguard were dead and the Minerva was unable to turn back the triumphant advance of the 26th Magdeburg. The scoring looked like this at the end.

All 32 of the Middlesex Regiment were killed. The 26th Magdeburg took 26 casualties. Lord Flashheart became a PoW but I’m sure he will escape shortly!

So, all in all I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Silent Invader’s scenery, rules, figures, Sopwith and Minerva really made it a visually delightful game. My friends, Doug and John made the game a pleasure to play. A fantastic weekend hosted by John and I am looking forward to seeing their game reports. I have absolutely no shame in reposting the photo of the Three Musketeers at the end of my game. Thanks, gentlemen!

It was a great game to be a part of. Old Snapcase and Vagabond are top chaps (don’t tell ‘em I said so). Superb scenery and figures, engaging scenario and plenty of jollity. Don’t get many opportunities to play WW1 either which made it specially enjoyable.

Thanks to my fellow participants for a splendid gaming weekend.

Lieutenant Charles Henkart has been reported to the local Belgium Police and there is an arrest warrant out for a hit and run incident in Le Cateau on the 26th Aug 1914, in addition he was not displaying a number plate or an L plate to show he was a novice driver, I expect him to serve time in Chokey.

How the Henkart failed to see my men from 2 Zug, 26th (1st Magdeburg) Infanterie Regiment 'Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau' I don't understand, they were making enough noise, firing their guns and shouting Tommy go home, he was either drunk or it was a deliberate act of unprovoked violence, either way it's a very serious offence.   o_o

Well what can I say about the game, when Doug and I were invited to advance over open ground into the teeth of machine gun and rifle fire from entrenched infantry and to do it promptly, it didn't sound too enticing a prospect, but the privilege of playing on this gorgeous terrain outweighed the negatives.
As it turned out we were lucky in that the scenario called for us to be contesting every part of the town by turn 7, otherwise I don't think either of us would have attacked as boldly as we did but in retrospect that was probably the only way. Pluck and dash.

An excellent game played with a couple of top blokes.
Cheers
