Title: Goodbye Stuart Asquith
Post by: flags_of_war on November 04, 2019, 11:23:56 AM
I'm truly saddened to hear about the passing Stuart Asquith last night. He is a legend of the hobby and his books will be read by others for many more years to come. He was a frequent customer of mine and he was always very helpful when talking with him. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Rest Easy Stuart, you will be missed by many within the Hobby  :'( :'(

Ah, what a pity. He was a wargaming legend of old. I remember buying his 'Battle' magazine (short-lived, but the was the editor) when I was a kid back in the 1970's, so he's been a leading light in the world of wargaming for a very long time. Bless him.

RIP , Mr. Asquith. I never met him but I bought Battle magazine religiously. I’ve always enjoyed his articles in other publications, a great contributor.

A sad lose indeed, it was his articles in Military Modelling back in the 80s that really got me into wargaming.

So sorry to hear this news.
I corresponded with Stuart recently and was able to tell him how he'd been an inspiration to me through his articles and publications. A very nice guy.

That is really sad news indeed. I grew up with his books and magazine articles in the late 70th and early 80th . He will be missed dearly. Rest in peace!

RIP, a great influence on the hobby and a genuinely nice man.

I had the pleasure of periodically gaming with him a few years back, he was a true gentleman.

Just adding to this. I came across him in the 70s through articles in Military Modelling, (IIRC).

I think in this time when we all have internet access, email etc. and clubs and vendors are a few clicks away, it's easy to underestimate just how crucial things like Battle, and Practical Wargamer were to building the hobby. Especially if you lived outside of London or a major city, there were no conventions, shops were for railway or military modellers first and foremost, and magazines were the lifeline for many of us.

I occasionally have the privilege of playing with Charles S. Grant, and he has written a very fine eulogy for Stuart, published by Henry Hyde on his Battlegames site. It's worth a read, and it's also a sobering thought that we are now losing that second generation of notables from the hobby.

Future notables have big shoes to fill.

oh gosh, 'virtual' condolences to his friends and family.

Oddly, didn't know he was the editor of 'Battle' magazine, but well remember his Observation Post articles in MM, taking over from Terry Wise iirc.

I know I'm a bit late but just saw this. I read his stuff as a kid and some of his books since. Always liked his style.

Damn, none of us are getting younger

RIP
