Been working on a set of Genpei War skirmish rules based on TFL's WW2 air combat rules, 'Bag The Hun.' It's not quite as crazy as it seems.
Honest.

Really interesting read and I'd be interested to see a copy of the rules when you're done with them! That Friday book along with Conlan's 'State of War'' are big reasons why this period through the Nanboku-chō is my favourite period of Japanese history.
I started work on a set of small-scale skirmish rules for the Heian period years ago, based mostly on Mordheim but I wanted a mounted archery system similar to what you describe here - didn't get too far because none of my gaming buddies had any interest in the period, and at the time there weren't a lot of suitable minis available either.

Interesting read, it seems to work well for the period. Good stuff! :)

The early 'samurai' period has been poorly served by rules. In fact, I can't think of any that are specifically for Heian/Kamakura warfare. I think that might be because of the widespread perception that battles in the early period mainly consisted of mounted duels which would be difficult to write rules for. Rules in line with modern historical analysis of the period should be much easier, particularly with Friday and Conlan's works. But I guess the early period will never have the same popularity as the Sengoku Jidai.

Interesting ideas you have with 'Bad the Hun'.
Sounds fun, you could use the rules for Plains Indian Wars in the US.

Any news as to when the rules your will be available?

Hi, Any update? We are still keen to play this game ;)

I'll tidy it up and make it available by the end of the year., hopefully. Got sidetracked into other stuff recently :)

We are all looking forward to seeing and playing these rules.
Thanks for the update.

The draft rules are now available for download from my 'blog. Hopefully they're comprehensible even without some knowledge of 'Bag The Hun,' but just a warning that they might not be!

Downloaded! Thank you!

Very interesting! You're right on the conservative front, I'd never have thought to look at the opportunity of a cross over! Thanks for the download. :)

Thread resurrection!
I've been revisiting this venture into the Genpei War. I wanted to try and develop the rules a bit more, so I got some more Westwind figures and a hex cloth from Tiny Wargames and pushed some figures around.

That looks really interesting are you going to make those cards available on your websit?
-
I might include them in a 'V2' of the rules. The game uses a lot of markers, so the cards are a useful place to store them. It's the usual thing however, in that the markers are much easier to remember if they're by the figure. I'll do some more cards with permanent abilities on them eventually.
-
I make cards for Ronin, however, i put a picture of the actual figure on the card. I also have a name on the figure and and the card also help. i then keep any counters on the cards.

Very nice. I do think having attractive paraphernalia adds to a game. I do a similar thing for Test of Honour, putting a photo of the figure on the ToH card. For WoHaB the figures look too similar to use photos, so I used number counters on the cards linked to small numbers on the figure bases.

Apologies for being late to the thread. That is a really interesting and inspiring idea, I am a fan of seeing rules for their mechanics or systems they use and fitting them to my setting. Thank you for posting,

It's been quite interesting. It started out more as a thought experiment than anything else, being more or less a direct port of 'Bag the Hun,' but I'm going to gradually develop it as more of a game in its own right.

16-a-side game last night. I've made some modifications to the rules, so the poor horses aren't getting hit quite as much as they used to. Still likely to have been some fairly steep vets' bills after this game. There were 2 instances of friendly fire where players declared shots against figures they thought were enemies....

Brilliant stuff (and built in fog of war…… priceless when it happens on the tabletop). This just looks great fun.

Hi, Can you list the changes that you have made to the game?
Thanks

It was a fun game. The most effective thing on the table was a bush which unhorsed two of the Taira. A strict 'no takebacks' rule creates lots of (usually hilarious) player errors.
Main changes so far are a different combat results table, additional abilities for bushi and horses, and a morale system. I'll eventually get the changes written up and put on the blog, but it might be a while yet.

Another game, another two 'friendly fire' incidents.....
